- Is the Steam Deck worth buying? In this video, we'll share our review of the new handheld console from Valve. While it has some amazing features, there are also some downsides that you should consider before making a purchase. Watch this video to see if the Steam Deck is the right choice for you.
So I paid $2,000 to get the steam deck early and after 1 month of use with the mobile handheld pc, I gotta say I am impressed but underwhelmed. A very opposite response from one another; with that said.. Don't let the smile in the thumbnail fool you, I am severely annoyed by this product. The steam deck is unfinished and incomplete. The Steam OS is great, but Linux SUCKS. Why would they ever use linux for the OS when they could have used windows? A complete flop when it comes to compatibility for games and accessories. The fact that the battery life gets even worse if you choose to run windows is a joke. Speaking of the battery, Valve says its rated for 2-8 hours which is a HUGE difference and most games I try.. i can't even get 2 hours out of this device. A majority of games aren't even compatible even with SteamOS. So if you want to play Halo Infinite or Destiny or Call of Duty Warzone.. YOU WASTED YOUR MONEY. I sure hope updates come out during the next few months that will give us more value for our steam deck. Steam Deck has so many flaws in its own system, but it has a lot of potential that I believe can be fixed in software updates over the next year. I would say currently the steam deck is not worth purchasing unless you are buying it for emulation. Maybe the steam deck will build its reason to be bought as time goes on.

I'm just confused. You paid a scalper $2000 to buy a piece of gear to do things that it wasn't intend to do and play games that aren't currently supported, and then complain that it is giving you issues?
i paid $2k to make a very highly anticipated video as soon as possible. my q3 pre order is still on the way. i made a video to test games I WANTED to play. and news flash.. if the hardware should be able to run a game from 2015 just fine and cant currently.. then its not worth it for a lot of people (like me) who primarily play call of duty. what things did i do that it wasn't intended for??? lmao besides play games not CURRENTLY supported?

@@BeyondtheBox1 then plays games you WANTED to, on devices which support them. There is such things liuke System Requirements, you check them for games you WANTED to play and buy according hardware. Unsupported hardware is unsupported by game, why you have to so hard time to understand that? Deck have custom APU, custom system and list of verified games, call of duty don't support that mix, what's wrong with you?

See, but the actual price for the premium steam deck is like $600-750 USD if my memory serves me right.
He definitely bought this from a third party rather than from the actual store, most likely because it is out of stock.
@@totomac3600 Each tier has the same specs, the difference is more storage and if you go for the highest one you get the anti glare screen which is nice but should not be a deciding factor if you wanna get it.

@@Saiputera you realize anything 30 fps and above is considered very good for a handheld, right? That’s on you for having insane expectations and not doing your research. When you have a screen that’s 1280x800, it’d be dumb to expect a super high framerate. Just sounds like you didn’t do your research man… everyone else knew what to expect and what they were getting
If you try to get games to run on the Deck that aren't on Steam and Verified or at least playable, then you would obviously need to do quiet a bit of tinkering, it is to be expected. You had unrealistic expectations about the device. And you should have used Steam Input to get the Controls to work properly.
Saw the list of installed games, most of em marked as "unsupported" and he's more surprised when BF2042 didnt work in comparison to the 2 that somehow worked?
It sure is a shame that dislikes are hidden now.

While I don't love the review because I think you miss the point of what the Steam Deck is really designed to do, I do think it's an accurate representation of what a primarily AAA FPS gamer is going to think of the deck. For me, where the deck really shines is being able to play almost every indie game on Steam, RPGs, and emulation. If you're coming in expecting competitive FPS games to work well, you're going to be disappointed. Those players should stick with mouse and keyboard.

@@Saiputera no issue here. Are you talking about docked for resolutions higher than 720p? You might wanna temper your expectations because it's an entire computer, monitor, inputs and battery in a form factor smaller than most graphics cards alone...

Check if you are using Gamepad controls instead of emulated mouse.
If the game detects a mouse, It disable auto-aim.
Linus tech tips has problems in Horizon zero down because of auto-aim being disabled.
SteamDeck dosn't sucks but console gamers aiming skills does.
First person shooters are always going to suck on consoles, they were made for keyboard and mouse, playing them on a console is just crippling yourself 🤪

Have Steam Deck for one month I use gyro to aim on FPS and it works OK. Battlefield 1 works great on deck. Changing compatibility settings to proton experimental sometimes helps to run games, specially from GOG and Epic. I set my deck to 9 wats to get more battery life and it helps with fan noise as well.
I like to play games with Spotify playing in background, it's also possible to listen to YT and other stuff as well - try this on the Switch :D
Also retro gaming is a big thing on deck.

You can change the way gyro is activated like instead of the touch or toggle on the thumb stick option you can have it toggle on with a tap of one of the touch pads that seems to work better imo.
I want to play the old thief games on the steam deck. Well I guess I have to wait until it's verified oh, because right now at this stage it's no bueno.

I mean if you just go for the lower value product and don't but from scalpers, getting yourself a £350 portable pc handheld and just buy a £60 sd card for like 512gb or something and you have a product of INSANE value that can not be beat, most tripleA games you can probably get an hour and a half before turning on FSR or putting on a 30 frame cap which should at least get you to 2 hours and a bit which isn't ideal but if you just run lower power games (like the switch does) you'd get much more battery life of 4hours at least
Exactly it's the same I do with my laptop to keep it running cool. Just limit ur fps to 30 I don't know why this is so hard or unpleasant. If ur going full handheld PC u should expect such limitations to be borderline needed.

You can config the controller sticks to work like every other controller on marked. I dont know the problem with "it is bad to play fps with it". If you dont wanna use gyro. You must load a simple controller config, wich makes all mouse and keyboard functions on the deck to only controller functions on the game you playing. Then you will have aim assist back too.

Some of the gripes are unnecessary but there are quite a few that have some valid suggestions as to what the viewers would like to see. If you're making videos only for yourself, that's one thing, but clearly your goal is to garner subs. 20k is your goal at the moment. Hastily dismissing potential subs that think some additions could make the video more worth watching is just baffling.

Totally agree. I got mines a fortnight ago and it just irritates the hell out of me. Lucky if its been used for more than 2 hours(my mood goes into freefall everytime i switch it on) . Most games are just not developed with a small screen in mind resulting in tiny everything. Most games are just not developed for anything other than mouse and keyboard. Many games are just not developed for Steam Deck full stop and won't work at all. Considering just selling the thing, it's a total mood killer.

It’s probably not a good idea to only rely on a handheld controller based console for competitive online FPS games.
So you're entire channel is about unboxing and talking about tech and you couldn't even bother yourself to research the details of the Steam Deck before making this video, and claiming you've had it for weeks? On top of that you tell your viewers, who came here to hear you specifically, to go look it up themselves? Which is what they did when they found you? Lord, how do you have 15k subs is beyond me.

I appreciate your perspective, but I wish you went into a little more detail as to what you think made it more difficult to control. I'm in the queue to get one and I'm super excited to get my hands on it. I'm mostly planning on using it to allow me to get away from my desk, and for when I'm away from home. It seems like it's pretty rough around the edges right now and personally I'm fine with a bit of tinkering but hopefully they manage to fix most of the issues before my order comes up.
This is copied and pasted from a comment I made but I think it applies: "And you played games that A. The Deck doesn't advertise as supported, and B. The Deck really isn't built for, competitive FPS games. And you didn't even properly tweak some of those games to work good on the Deck." Basically, he could've tweaked it to be better, not that it's not good, I think a combination of him jankily getting the games to work (Like I said, they aren't officially supported) causing input latency, and him being bad at the game, caused it.
But NOT tweaking it to be better, and thus giving a more negative outlook, drives attention towards his video and gives him more views and thus money, and with UA-camrs like this, that's all that matters. Because owning up to a bad video and learning from it just isn't of interest when he can make the same amount of money and put in less effort.

How are you playing at max settings? I've had to put almost every game down to medium settings and cap frame rate at 30 frames just to get a somewhat smooth experience. Also, the input latency is pretty terrible. The deck is not a good option for fps where milliseconds of timing make the difference

It's hard to control because u are using those rubber tall sticks , use it normally and u can use the track pad to aim or lower sensitivity on joysticks

There's honestly no excuse with the amount of control and customization you get with gyro, the sticks and the track pads. I've been murking ppl in Splitgate with gyro controls and the sticks, feels great.

Checking compatibility using Deck verified and ProtonDB would have saved several hours of cocking about here I suspect. Or just ignoring the non Deck verified part of the Store.

@@BeyondtheBox1 games may or may not work it's a complete toin coss. There can be several issues. If you're technically competent understand WINE and proton tricks or now how to hook up a custom version of Proton for that game then you can potentially fix that. However at no point in the video did you come off as currently having the research or competency level required to not get hugely frustrated and be wasting your time. Hence here be dragons.
If you do have the competency to do all the fiddling around then describing what was needed would be a lot more helpful.

You could use Proton-GE (Protonup via Discover in Desktop-Mode) to get the video issues solved (Black screen with sound)

Proton GE is a custom version of protron by "Glorious Eggroll", a redhat employee. It has often more up-to-date wine and DXVK versions included (the backbones of Proton) and additional fixes included.

@@BeyondtheBox1 No, Warzone uses it's own anti cheat system and Activision hasn't shown any interest in making it Proton compatible. So I wouldn't hold my breath on compatibility with that specific game.
@@jarnobot I highly can recommend proton-ge it really fixes a ton of issues in unsupported games, basically it is try proton first, then if you have issues to to proton-ge normally stepping up to proton-ge fixes the issues, especially if they are video related.

I'm not interested in the Switch OLED or Lite. I'm not the biggest Nintendo fan although I love playing GC games. Switch has outdated specs from 2015. Why get it now? What if Switch 2 is backwards compatible? Might be out in 2 years.
You can play switch and GameCube on the deck.

You OBVIOUSLY have not looked into the deck. Warzone doesn't load due to a anti cheat issue. You clearly should have taken a bigger interest into the device and looked at things before you purchased it. Like I said in another comment the deck isnt meant for fps but just takes some getting used to.

I would just play the games that run well and are intended to be played at this point in time. I am doing research, I may buy one. Being a hardcore shooter I knew this wouldn’t be the best for FPS’s but I figured it may be good at the other games in my arsenal. Eventually I think they will make some FPS better on the deck. If I do get it I am just going to enjoy what it can do and play the games it supports. Your video was helpful in what not to do lol.
I only play fps as clearly shown in the video. So this doesn’t do me much good but for others yeah it will be great. But Lego Star Wars is awesome on it.

First person shooters in general are difficult on controllers unless you use the gyro.
The gyro was super fucked up and doing every direction but what I was asking for when I played mw2. That’s the only fps I got to actually test.
From what I heard, gyros will take some time getting used to. Portal was recommended as the first game to play with gyro, since you can take your time focusing just on gyro, instead of worrying what the enemy will do.
Kinda like trainer bikes where you can just focus on balancing, instead of bicycle where you get to focus on both balancing and cycling.
@@BeyondtheBox1 try setting the gyro so it functions with thumb on stick insted of on the pad.
@@BeyondtheBox1 You were probably using joystick mouse instead of mouse for the gyroscope. Right thumbstick sucks in terms of speed and accuracy.

You simply have to learn to set up and use gyro aiming. Simple as that! For a few years now, I have played all my fps-games with the ps4 controller and the steam gyro feature, without any auto-aiming enabled. Nowadays I would never ever buy (or play) an fps game if it doesn't include or can't be tweaked to support gyro aiming. When you learn to set it up with the smallest possible dead zones and learn to hold the controller stable with rather high gyro sensitivity, then it becomes more or less like aiming a real gun, and for me, it absolutely beats out my mouse aiming skills all the time.
Oh yes. This is very much the dude bro review of the steam deck. Everything from shoving out exorbitant amounts of cash for a moderately priced item, to the selection of games, and finally of course, the lakers t shirt. This is a good review to watch alongside others, especially if you’re trying to buy this for FPS games. Not what the main intention of this device was.
Does it not have a HDmi port 🤔
No, there's only a USB-c port. There's an add-on dock sold separately (and not yet available) that has an HDMI port, display port, Ethernet and a few USB ports plus charging. The Deck comes with a charger that plugs directly in to the USB-c port.
It will also work with third party docks, of course.
It would be nice to have more built-in I/O but they had to cut somewhere to get to the Deck's pretty extraordinary pricing.

While I do think the video overall was very clean and very well done, I do think some of your criticisms were a bit out-of-touch (first person shooter on a mobile console was not gonna be good on even the best hardware) also I feel you should really keep in mind that games on a mobile platform (not to mention linux) is touchy at best when it comes to many AAA games. So expecting the bar to be as high as you say for such early hardware is a bit unfair to be blunt. Now if this was 3rd generation or even 2nd generation software then I'd agree but come on, harping on a products inabilities given it's a "early adopter" product kinda comes off as a bit overvaluing. It's a $400 portable pc, and pretty crazy to say the least.
The hardest part is the controls for fps games. I think the system is great otherwise. Just needs to add compatibility for more games

Steam deck for cod🤔 Im more excited about playing jrpg’s and rpg’s on it. Stuff like dragon quest 11, person 4 golden, fallout 3,4, new vegas, also really wanna try elden ring and the witcher 3. I have about 700 games in my steam library and it keeps getting bigger because of humble bundle. Also been playing tiny tina’s wonderland on epic wish it would get on steam. Do you normally play on pc or consoles because i fill the steam decks joysticks shouldn’t fill that much different than using a controller. I had to get some binbok joycons to make my switch more comfortable to play and the vita’s sticks were too small. Hopefully i will find out soon enough I got my email today and payed for it. I got the 256gb model didn’t get the 512 because i wanna use a screen protector and it would nullify the 512’s screen. (I think) Also just ordered a pack of screen protectors and a Samsung 512gb micro sd card for it. I think I’ll be fine with 768gb’s of storage it’s just something to tinker with for me. I got my desktop 5950x 3080ti if i wanna push graphics and framerate. I’ll probably run 30fps most of the time to save battery. But I do have a 15in gaming laptop and I could never play multiplayer competitive games on it (I sucked) so maybe the small screen and the controls are making you worse than normal on cod.

Ive had the same experience with fps games. I really wanted to play halo infinite on my deck but it's impossible to aim. I love the concept but the reality is the steam deck isn't what i'd hoped.
Steam deck isn't complete yet I was gonna buy too but I'll wait for more upgrades

Man u should definitely review the Aya Neo, right out of the box I haven't had an issue with game compatibility or any issues at all. Battery is gonna be a pain on all of these handheld PCs. I have used mine for work and for gaming and I love it. U gotta try and review it if u can. I have the 2021 pro the amd 4800 model but now they have the next model out which is like an amd 5800 I believe.
id 100% put one of those USB C Magnet connectors to it.

Previous handheld systems (GPD Xplayer) are not optimized for competitive shooters like COD. The sticks on none of them give you the precise movements. The SD seems to have the same problem. These devices aren't made for this genre.
Isn't the gyro and touchpads supposed to bridge the gap (somewhat) between other handhelds/traditional controllers and keyboard and mouse?
Like not quite as good as keyboard and mouse but a lot better than traditional controller sticks. I haven't got my Deck yet so I don't know first hand but I've read stuff along those lines.
@@dralberthofmann that’s the idea but I think there’s not enough decks out for enough people to really test the pads out. I don’t have mine yet either but if it’s anything like the pad on the steam controller, I don’t think it’s that great. Generally the sticks on anything but Xbox and PlayStation controllers seem just not able to give the level of control needed.

So, MSRP is $600 but he paid $2000 to get it early, but when he got it he didn't bother to even open it for "a week or two" because he's busy. can someone please explain this logic to me? Seems like he wasted $1400 on absolutely nothing
FPS sucks on this thing. I tried it for a week and the controls are god awful. I love the specs and what it has to offers but controls is very important to me, otherwise it ruins the experience. I sold my 256gb for $975 so I guess after fees and shipping, I made about $150 for trying it out. Wait until Steam Deck 2. The joystick positions are so far from the edge and does not feel good.
You're the only person I heard complain about this specific issue nobody else has that's kind of odd as far as the $2,000 price tag somebody's lost their mind this thing cost on average of less than $500

Currently the steam deck is meant for tinkerers, not for a wide audience, but its interesting to see the opinion of a casual gamer. The steam deck still has a relatively long way to go to appeal to masses but its on great tracks
He plays fps multiplayer games. He was hoping to do that as well as he can on pc. This will never be the case. His expectations were very flawed. He also didn't use steam deck verified games and instead just complained it didn't work..
Most the recent comments say they dislike the review. I absolutely agree. If you read this before watching, save yourself the time and go watch another one. Absolute waste of time, expecting things it never said it could do and if you want a 19 hour tutorial into every hole on the console, your in the right place. I think the games that aren't working are because of anti-cheat which is still work-in-progress in the Deck.

Some people are really excited for this thing. We preach all day about “don’t support scalpers” and such, but when it comes down to it you’d buy it too if you could, even at an inflated price. That extra money spent is well worth it if you’re, what, playing at least a YEAR before “after q3” actually comes?
No, I do not pay 2 to 3 times the price, while I definitely could. I will use that money for a decent laptop instead (after my old one will retire that is) and I wait until I get my order confirmation for Quarter 2.

COD on PC at least the older CODs (bo2 and below) were horrible ports, even if you are playing on windows controller support was ass and it just felt clunky, nothing like on console. Running it on linux with a controller is just asking for trouble. If activation and treyarch made proper ports the first time then it wouldn't be like this

I feel like a lot of issues you claim to have would have been fixed if you took the time to research more. I've seen a number of the games you're unable to launch run on other videos with very minor tweaks. Not knowing how to set up back buttons, properly use gyro etc. It doesn't seem like you're well informed about this product at all, and there are fixes for almost every complaint you've had in this review.
Valve should just block stupid users from playing games that are not playable. Draconian - yes, but you can't cure stupidity.

I guess the main issue here is we have a lot of console people entering the Linux space and none seem to want to take the initiative to actually learn anything. If it doesn't work on the first click it obviously must be broken.
And complaints about shooter games being unplayable is just a personal issue. Tweak the controls, use gyro or the touch pad until you find a more responsive control input. Putting a joystick extension on top of a thumb stick and completely ruining its capacitive function just shows how little this guy actually bothered to learn about the hardware.

Playing fast paced fps competitive online games is not good with analog dood! 🤦🏼♂️ Its made for mouse, you can change the sensitivity as you like, but the end of the days, mouse is the most accurate.
you can come close if you are good with the trackpads and gyro aim but at the end of the day, mouse users still have an advantage of lets say 10% over those controls. With sticks you are in the 50% disadvantage area, hence console makers shun to open shooters to pc players in a mixed environment, the controller players would constantly lose.
