Great video! And since everyone here shares my gear addiction, wanted to share I was able snag my white whale guitar this week. I found a Custom Shop Les Paul Class 5 locally and it is literally the guitar of my dreams. Perfect in every sense of what I’ve always wanted in a Les Paul. So I did some trading and brought her home.

I've been jamming with my friend Rod for the past few weeks. He's got Marshall amps and I have become fascinated with the sound. The P-90 SG sounds like heaven through a Marshall, now I get it! Thanks so much for your deep dive. CHEERS Colin, see you next week!

FUN! The half of it is the fun you have seeing what your gear can do, bum notes that come up when playing clean like this are a great learning tool as you quickly realize where your technique needs work for any player no matter what level you are in a way that playing dirty doesn't. But that is also half the point of playing, having fun, trying to emulate the great players is a motivator, especially when you get it right. The tones your getting are just great and do sound like the great blues men of times past. Very desired sound for blues.

I don’t think I’ve hit a like button quicker. A Les Paul and a Bluesbreaker is something I’ve adored since the beginning of my playing life. I liked it so much I had a local tech build me a clone and that amp has been with me since 2007 and it’s been on the road and on loads of recordings and live gigs. I’ll never part with it. Cheers!

I bought that album in the summer of 84 I think maybe earlier learned alot from it and it showed me who Otis Rush was . Turns out Otis was miles head of slow hand as vocalist guitarist and songwriter. Now I'm trying to get Otis's earth shattering Fender strat through a fender verb 1958 tone . Thanks Eric😊

These have a great sound. Mine is a 2002 too!!! 😲 I've found with those old Marshalls diming everything the dialling back the bass works best for that kind of sound. Only works when the amp is at max volume though. Diming the presence, treble and mids gets you as much gain as possible. Dialling back the bass stops some of the flub. Great sound though and love the video! 👌👌

I found the same thing, those old Marshalls are very special if your lucky enough to try one, I was lucky enough to own an Australian built version from the 70s, we had no Marshalls in the stores back then so a lot of stuff was built locally. The amp I had was an ADI VT50 which is very similar to a sound city where they basically built there own version of a Marshall because of import restrictions.

Interesting enjoyed this the original had a pair of KT66 valves in the finals which would make a difference. When this was recorded pre desk the signal was run through a valve compressor and post was run through Decca Studio's plate reverb which was partially on the roof and the basement. I had a bluesbreaker which I called the balls breaker due to its weight but was too loud to get that sound on a gig I think the mini Bluesbreaker 18-watt 1974 was a more practical option to get the bluesbreaker tone without damage to your lugs. Thanks for the video it brings back memories

I have a Marshall 1962HW Bluesbreaker. It is my favorite amp that I’ve ever used in my life. Of course, one of the main things I did was to get as close to the Beano tone as possible when I got it. The modern pcb board Bluesbreakers don’t use the same power tubes as the originals. The 1962HW does use the KT66 valves and it makes a huge difference! Another important factor is that Clapton plugged into the Normal channel. He did not plug into the bright channel or jump the channels. Cranking the amp is obviously important. I use a Fryette Power Station 2 always for attenuation and because it has an effects loop. The Beano tone isn’t my personal tone. I jump the channels and plug into both high impedance jacks with a split guitar cable. But it’s awesome to be able to get that Beano tone with just a few knob tweaks and by plugging into the darker channel. You’ve gotta change your EQ settings quite a bit to use that channel but those tones are in there. Thanks for the awesome video!

I have a 1991 reissue Bluesbreaker, it’s my everyday at home amp. I’m fortunate, I live way out in the country and my neighbors are not close at all. And happily my wife doesn’t mind either, I love to just crank it! I have a PA speaker with Bluetooth. I love to go on UA-cam and find backing tracks, I crank the volume on the PA speaker, and crank the Bluesbreaker, it’s almost too loud to be in the room without ear protection. So what I love to do, it just sit right outside the room with the door cracked. Not too loud then. And sounds huge! Those 2x12’s just screaming. I love to jump the 2 channels. Set both of them around 3/4 the way up and your in heaven. The Bluesbreaker has always been my dream rig. I saved my Pennie’s and drove over to Dave’s Killer Vintage in Dallas and picked it up. At the time, he had two. So I was lucky I could sit and play both of them, till I picked my favorite. Best amp ever. If you get a chance to own one, go for it. Best sounding amp I’ve got!

Thanks for this, there aren’t a lot of YT videos with extended playing examples of what a BB actually sounds like. Clapton’s had the Alnico speakers and you can really hear them stressing on the album - big mids push and cone cry as the frequency and dynamic range cave in. It sounds great on the record, but IME Bluesbreakers show their full capabilities best with the greenbacks.

Actually Eric had been recording with Jimmy Page in Mike Vernon's flat (can you imagine it). Mike produced the Bluesbreaker /Beano album (and the Peter Green one and Mick Taylors several...
They knew what they were doing, knew Eric had to play loud ("well, I turn the amp up until it starts to sound good, mate).
The secret to recording loud guitar then (and now) was to have a mic array. Starting close mic'ed then room and then Mike's spciality which was a corner loaded mic. This in studio 2 was placed in the opposite corner to Eric's mic - it had long boom which was mounted vertically and aimed into the actual corner. If this is not meaning much, I can try again.
what is really amazing is how Eric improved his technique since living the Yardbirds (Mike use to sub for Keith Relf with the Yardbirds. Keith suffered badly from asthma..
    Loved your "Steppin' Out"!!!!
    Best, Pete.
PS I think the secret to Eric's success was his Vibrato, Hammer ons, Pull offs and Legato. There a good clip on You Tube of the Bluesbreakers playing live at the Flamingo in Wardour Street. Worth searching for. P.

If you check out his autobiography he used the bridge position and volume and tone cranked to 10 on the guitar if I remember right from what I read with the mic a distance away from the amp and if you look on the back of the vinyl you see a picture of the setup but least 3-6 feet away from the amp. But otherwise what you are doing is great and sounds great🤘🏻🎸🤘🏻. Also now thinking about it while watching he had the bass on the amp cranked to 10 as well😂 but regardless you should check out his autobiography it’s really worth the read and details he gives.

I used to get a pretty giood approximation of Clapton’s Cream-era tone in the late ‘60s with a cranked ‘67 Fender Bandmaster amp and a ‘67 Gibson SG Standard. Neck pickup with voluma on 10, tone on 0. I didn’t use the bridge pickup with that amp setting, (volume at 9, bright switch on, treble at 10, bass at 5), as it was bright enough to kill the hearing of anyone within earshot. But that neck pickup with the tone rolled off worked great! And with all the Clapton licks I’d stolen, er, learned, I became known at school as Eric Junior, and it wasn’t always a compliment!

Yes the TMDR for my clean and slightly clipped tones for P90s, single coils and the odd humbucker,m. Ny pedalboard covers overdrive/distortion.
The Boss Katana for acoustics and overdrive/distortion tones without a pedalboard.
THE TMDR tone was there as advertised,m. The tone that I'd been missing for so long...
My Strat into DR knockd me out.
Before, my '59 Narrow Panel Bassman had been my tone for...ever.
All those years, the DR eluded me. My Bassman and pedalboard was ALL I needed/wanted.
But as soon as I finally plugged into the DR....GOODBYE TWEED and hello blackface❤😉👍👍
The tones I'd been missing for all that time of chasing distortion and the amps known for it.
Remembering the 1st time plugging my strat into the TMDR was like..."where have you've been all my life" moment🤣👍👍
      Been satisfied ever since😎👍
And it sounds just as good when dialing up the volume, unlike many amps where your rushing to turn it down for whatever reason.
      Know what I mean?
The DR sounds beautiful and stays that way as it is turned up. It's good for the ears, not hurting the ears.
Hard to explain except to say the neighborhood doesn't complain about the DR being too loud😉
It's a sound that the body invites in when it hears it.😃
By the way...the Revstar RSS02T is my new #1 guitar without a vibrato.
A real precision instrument that covers alot of ground very nicely.😉👍
Keep on doing what you are doing so well Colin👍👍

That Beano album Clapton tone and playing has been my inspiration for about 10 years now. I try to get that aggressive but not too distorted sound through a Boss Katana head with greenback speakers. One observation; as with Clayton’s sound on Beano, AC/DC tone is a lot less distorted than you would imagine. So many modern players have way too much fuzz (and reverb) imho, which takes the edge off the hard power! Another thought: I regard Clapton as an Apollonian guitarist while Hendrix is Dionysian. That edge of feedback that Clapton gets is the edge of wild chaos. Hendrix goes beyond those bounds. Thanks for your video 🙏👋

In addition to his amp being cranked for the recording, Clapton was also a very aggressive player. He has commented that he no longer plays or sounds like he did in 1966 because during his Bluesbreakers days he was aggressive, angry, arrogant and egotistical. One, most notably former band members, could argue that he still possesses some of those traits, though if he does they seldom translate to his playing. That said, put a 335 in his hands and his playing jumps a few notches in terms of aggressiveness and his tone comes alive.

With Mayall, Clapton used a Dallas Rangemaster treble booster because the Les Paul sounds dark through the Bluesbresker!

@@theguitaristas It's never been proven. I'm one of those guitarists who can "hear it!" Then, again, the sound engineer could have been boosting the treble during solos. I guess it's just a belief that I continue to hold simply because I always have!

    • @MrCherryJuice
      @MrCherryJuice 8 місяців тому

As noted, there is uncertainty re: the Rangemaster, though photos from the recording session don't show one. Also worth noting that EC was a very aggressive player, which would have influenced his sound dramatically.
BTW, the engineer, Gus Dudgeon, was one of London's finest, going on to record majors including Elton John, so once he figured out how to accommodate Clapton's demand to record at full volume - another sonic factor - he would surely have made the effort to nail a sutiable tone.

  • @balijukka9963
    @balijukka9963 11 місяців тому

You got the breakup and response as in the Beano, but your tone is a bit darker. Could be that you did not play loud enough. Could be the guitar. Those old bursts have that mid resonance that makes them brighter but not too trebly. That also helps to get that feedback and sustain easily. When you tried to get that note ring and sustain, there was clearly too much "strato like" treble and bottom. Thre was a reason Clapton wanted to play loud. Pushing the power amp AND the speaker rolls of both top and bottom as well as it compresses and distorts. Also those early Marshalls were all different. Clapton once said that the best ones had that sag and bloom, but not all.
Or mic, the mic placement,.... endless.
Anyway that sound after the nerdy bit was just gorgeus. IMHO beats the Beano sound. Leaning towards greeny.
