Eric Clapton's Stolen Beano Guitar - Who has it?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- Joe Bonamassa says he knows where Beano is. Baxter and Jonathan talk about other lost or stolen guitars and if collectors have a responsibility to return them to the owners. The boys also go down the road with Peter Frampton's famous 3 pickup Les Paul Custom.
Even if Eric got it back it's very likely he would Auction it & donate the money to Crossroads, as he's done with the majority of his famous vintage Electrics. Crossroads is obviously something very dear to Eric & it's a noble cause so God bless him for doing it!
With others guitars yeah. But no with Beano
If Eric got it back I would hope he would put down the damn strats for a while. Jesus Christ
I want to know where the Beano comic book is!
Anyone that steals a musician’s instrument should be horse whipped.
I say force them to play the guitar through 2 Marshall Major full stacks with everything on 10.
Then they'll never hear another note again🤣
...twice
Ritchie Blackmore doesn’t see why this is a punishment.
@@wrenchhead4378 ...and then pissed on.
A stolen guitar, a stolen anything, remains the property of the owner it was stolen from. Buying a stolen guitar doesn’t make you the owner. When someone rebuys something it’s a combination of goodness of their heart and a PR consideration. When someone like Bonamassa finds out a guitar is stolen and returns it to the rightful owner that’s his legal responsibility. When you do pawnshop purchases (I do this sometimes) you have to be prepared for losing the money if its a stolen instrument. Life’s like that.
Agreed. No matter who has that guitar in his possession now, it remains Clapton's guitar.
Correct. This concept that, "I didn't know it was stolen, so it's okay for me to keep it." is bull.
Different laws in different countries. The laws we have here in the US are not the same in the UK. The guitar was stolen in the UK. I agree with the thoughts, guitar thieves are scoundrels and I would want my guitar back. Be legal claims that it is your forever, no questions asked, is not true. Look up the story on Craig Chquico's Les Paul. It is very convoluted and in the end... the lawyers were the only winners in the whole affair.
@@jppagetoo Joe Bonamassa bought Craig Chaquico’s Les Paul after it was sold to a guitar collector named Harry Kemppainen who had no idea that he bought a stolen guitar.
Joe fervently says that the “lawyers worked it out!”

(around the 25-minute, mark)
Why wouldn’t Joe call out who has it? It’s stolen! At the very least call Eric and tell him.
When Robert trujillo found out the whereabouts of Jacos bass he bought it and donated it to his family.
I want to see clapton play his les paul again so bad.
I believe that there are like 200 50's undiscovered LP bursts laying around somewhere...
200 59 bursts unnacounted for.. doesn't necessarily mean they're lying around anywhere.. they weren't always valuable and there was a big phase of bands smashing up instruments.
@@bombercountyblues 1950's Not 59's...
I personally know of three that have discretely belonged to the same players for over 45 years.
In other news, I need a bigger closet, but I figure my retirement plan’s going to be OK.
Yes , I know of a 54/55 that's sitting in the case collecting dust ...in perfect condition, & old old strings ...
373379. This is the serial number on a 3 bolt 70's strat, mocha finish, that was stolen from me. It still hurts to this day. If anyone out there reading this has it, I want it back, please, no questions asked.
I've grown to really like Casino Guitars channel.
Yup. Likeable guys.
i agree rock on

@@matthewking8944 They're not in Georgia.
I love these guys.
Obviously, the East Coast collector JoBo seems to imply might be Dirk Ziff who has 300 odd bursts he is on the East Coast as one the real wealthy Aluminati think JoBo's Lawyers probably advised him to stop right there say nothing more. I imagine Dirk Ziff bought it unknowingly as nobody was doing the forensic analysis that is done on stuff like burst patterns etc. Either that or it's locked in a Vault by some private investor in Japan. Seemingly Ed Kings Red eye was stolen at gun point then some years later it ended up in Dirks collection. so the guy is not super fussy on provenance or when you are scooping up that many it matters far less.
Ziff has it.
I wonder if he has Bloomfield's burst too.
It might be a bit unfair to call Dirk out on this but East Coast collector his name popped straight in my head and as far as I know, JB has dodged the question ever since, not sure he just said it for PR purposes as he is an as serious collector of this stuff as it gets. Seemingly it took some work for to get Ed Kings guitar back. All that said I don't really think at this point Clapton is that bothered he might knock out a few tunes on it if he put it up for auction but I genuinely think he has moved on a long time ago. For all that the guitar community would like to see them reunited one more time. Me personally I much prefer Clapton playing a guitar with Humbuckers despite the fact he likes Strats more. I watched some footage a while back of him playing live with a 335/345 and that sound suits his blues mode far better than his boosted fattened up Strat. just my preference.
Dirk is a dirtbag billionaire, he has dealt in stolen gear before and simply doesn’t care, he has money and he knows the cops are not coming to his home in Florida to collect a guitar or two.
This guy is a trust fund hack. His dad built a media empire which he sold because his brat children told him they didn’t want to continue the family business. “Just give us the f’n money”, is a direct quote from a close family worker whom overheard the sons yelling at their dad. That quote was Dirk.
Ernie Boch Jr. is another trust fund hack that buys vintage Gibson's so he can impress Slash when he hires him for 10k to attend his parties...
Great stories. ive been a BP fan since the beginning. Met him once. He was very nice and gracious. Love these guitar stories! Hope Beano is found!
Coincidentally my bedroom as a teenager was also a Cream Rehearsal Room.
Besides all the great stories of the artist and guitars the other story worth exploring is implied in the "Go Your Own Way" sitting on the pool table learning Frampton Comes Alive album - right there, that sets you apart from the crowd. Follow the crowd or go your own way is the pressure for each generation. My go your own way musical moment came in Grade 8, our teacher wanted students to select a musical composition for studying lyrics as poetry and story. He encouraged us to bring in the albums we listen to at home and we'd listen in class. Only two students brought in Albums, me and someone else. The class favorite by at least 99% was the other person's album Saturday Night by the Bay City Rollers. The teacher let me play my selection which was Elderberry Wine by Bernie Taupin and Elton John. I was way outside the box of being cool to the class and I took a lot of mockery because of it. I discovered the song on the" Don't Shoot Me I am only the Piano Player" album and rhythmically and musically the song had a story to tell. Looking back perhaps I was the cool kid for not following the crowd. I am sure looking back spending time studying Frampton was time well spent and you didn't really miss anything for not following the crowd.
Then there's James Jamerson's Precision Bass "Funk Machine", another musically and historically significant instrument that was stolen and never recovered.
Douche move by Bonamassa. He probably knows where it is because he was looking at buying it.
If anybody, in this day, has knowledge of where every known burst is, and the money to obtain them, it’s Bonamassa!
Yes..Bonamassa is everyone's favorite guitarist but he should just bring it out and play it.
I know exactly where the Beano guitar is not, in my collection! LOL 8) A few years ago my local vintage shop acquired a 1954 LesPaul from a gentleman's estate in Buffalo NY. ( I'm between KBUF and KROC) It was in almost unplayed condition, and included 2 cases,, original chipboard and fine leather bag that was mint! It was a gold top. Also included a catalog, the original receipt, strap, and all other documentation. They had it for sale for $36k That was just too much for me at the time. After 6 months they had a sale, and reduced it to $28k. While I was trying to sell my pickup truck to buy it, it was sold. I had mixed emotions about that, but I still have my pickup and I'm happy about that anyway. (it was worth much more). A friend of mine also has a '64 Strat, and '64 black face deluxe. Original owner of both. I've been working on him for years. 8) I only wish I had everything I've bought and sold since 1968. 8-| LOL --gary
I’m a total straight up rocker but when it comes to country music and chicken pickin’ NOBODY plays a Fender Tele like Brad Paisley
Brent Mason and Johnny Hiland
Come on guys ... just admit it, the BEANO guitar is in the back room at Casino Guitars
Such an important instruments being stolen from their artists, is not only crime against the artist, but also a crime against the World's musical heritage. The connection between an artist and his instrument can be very special, very rare, and sometimes it happens that no replacement can be found that inspired the artist to create the same songs as the stolen instrument. In this case, by stealing the Beano Les Paul, who knows how many more great songs were in that guitar that Eric would have realized, and that goes even now. I am sure if Eric got it back, he would be drawn to create with it, and who knows what amazing songs would result from that reunification. Whoever has it (if you know it's Clapton's) should return it to him just for that fact alone. You are impacting all our musical heritage when you keep a such an instrument from the artist who has a special creative connection to it.
No, the rosewood strat was found and sat in the songbirds museum. I’ve played it and it was Heavy.
They kinda kept it on the down low that they had it and when Irv let me play it I got a picture with it. he told me not to post it online at the time but, since the closing I’ve obviously posted it online. 😂
@@tilerballard5315 Back in the late 90’s I played the rosewood Tele that Elvis owned at a guitar show in Nashville. That thing had to be every bit of 12-13 lbs.
There's a video of Conan O'Brien and Dani Harrison, and he remarks about how heavy it is...
I think that's why I have always been a "pawnshop guitar " guy my whole life! the life of these instruments is fascinating
Me too! Man, when I think of the guitars I seen at pawn shops I thought were too expensive back in the day, if I had only known i.e. a
59 les paul in a downtown pawnshop in 1977, priced if i remember right it was $1000 -$1200, I thought that was outrageous!!
With Joe Bonamassa sitting on the info about Beano,it's kind of a shame.Nobody gets to see it,play it,or record with it.The guy who owns it can't even brag about it publicly
. Aside from the fact ,it would be great to hear Clapton record with it again.
I have an unusual guitar. It was built by my brother when he worked at Fender, it is a Coronado Wildwood with Stratocaster neck. It is around 1964 vintage and has had locking tuners and an E335 Tailpiece installed since its creation. It is very beautiful with and figured with streaks of blue and yellow ingrained in the wood. It sounds wonderful. It is very playable is quite light weight. Do you think it has value?
What about Paul McCartneys 61 Hofner 500/1 that is still missing?
Although the statute of limitations is out on the theft and Clapton doesn’t have a legal claim on the guitar because of that (In the USA at least) I don’t believe the guitar will come out of hiding until Clapton dies. Because they could still attempt to sue to get it back and the current owner would still have to pay to fight the case. Even though he’d win. Joe Bonamassa said he saw it in someone’s collection and that it is a 59. Not a 60 as many thought it was. I absolutely believe Joe is telling the truth and he knows exactly what he’s talking about.
It's probably in the vault of Norm's Rare Guitars.
Why not? Everything else is.
@@ronaldwilson9525
Not everything else. Norm doesn’t really care about “player’s grade vintage” he only wants the perfect examples.
One weekend my buddy and I stayed at his grandmothers house in WV. Saturday night we began to snoop around and found hidden in a closet an old Gibson and Martin. No idea the models, just know they were very old and needed some TLC. Both still played great, just the strings looked to be about 40 years old.
I have this unsettling feeling that if it ever turned up, it would by common consent be found to be a dog. Eric was Eric, he’s been better placed than anyone else to identify and then play a Les Paul as good or better than his first one. He clearly just moved on. I love guitar, but this is becoming like a Cargo Cult.
I think you’re right. Guys like Clapton and Gilmour played guitar on some famous music, but to them it’s probably just “ a guitar I played”. I read an interview with Jimmy Page and he barely remembers what he played on famous songs and most of them were borrowed or stuff laying around the studio. These guys could go into a music store, take a guitar off the wall and noodle around, and it would automatically be worth double.
I recently heard that Randy Bachman found the guitar he used on his most known songs. It’s fascinating how it was found. I don’t think he has it yet. It’s in Japan.
These are some great stories. Thanks guyz. Friends of mine help find Jerry Cantrell's stolen guitar that was given to Jerry from EVH.
If you guys want to do a follow up there are really cool stories surrounding Page’s Black Beauty LP custom and Joe Perry’s ‘59.
When I was around 14, I got myself a brand new Strat ('82, still have it). Took it to my weekly guitar lesson. My teacher looked at it and said "You need to learn something by somebody who knows how to play that guitar" (i.e. a Strat). "Pick one, Hendrix or Clapton". I chose Clapton, and he selected "Stepin' Out" off Beano. I bought the Bluesbreakers CD (was my 2nd CD, still have it) It wasn't till years later I realized that actually it was a Les Paul Clapton used on it :/
He also had me do "Lay Down Sally" so I did get some Strat action too...
I have the beano burst, it was left to me by a late relative! i play it everyday, its the most resonant guitar in the world! What an amazing instrument lol
"There's no rockstar violin players back then" (Nikolai Pagonini wants to know your location)
Paganini considered the guitar to be his first instrument, and composed his music on the guitar.
Jaco's "Bass of Doom!" Do you know that story? Pretty cool. With that being said.... if anyone comes across an 84 Hohnor Jack Bass with a missing battery box cover IT'S MINE! And I want it back!
There also was another bass Jaco had at the time in NYC that was stolen and hasn't been seen again.
It a special Les Paul alone for surviving a plane crash, usually just falling over will take one out.
What about Slash ending up with Joe Perry's long lost LP and finally selling it back to him?
I think he actually gave it back to Joe perry as a birthday present...and I think its the tobacco burst les paul in the November rain video
That's a great story they should included.
The Minnesota Burst, a 59 les Paul that was discovered in Montevideo MN was living unbeknownst to me, about 2 hours from my house in the frozen winter wasteland known as St. Paul
I’m a Paisley fan for sure. His playing is great!!!
A lot of conjecture about Beano but the skinny is that it's a '59 and still definitely 'lost' and was stolen back in '66, those are the facts that we know for sure. As to whoever might have it, well, that will always be a moot point until it actually turns up...........if ever.
Sad thing is, creeps have been stealing notable guitars since the beginning. I remember reading that Buddy Holly had two of his Strat's stolen back in the '50's. (They're both still out there) Sir Paul had his violin bass stolen back in the 60's, same for George, had his first 12 string Ric swiped in the '60's. As Jiminy Cricket would say, "let your conscience be your guide" !
Yeah, it amazes me how many famous musicians have had their instruments swiped over the years...It can't be THAT easy...makes you think that most of the thefts are inside jobs...There's a recent interview that Joe B does with Terry Reid and Terry discusses how his LP was stolen (leaving behind the empty case) from the Filmore East dressing room while he was on stage - he makes a good case for it being an inside job...
The JB/TR interview is here ua-cam.com/video/UARwCgYuNGc/v-deo.html
It's a great interview - I love Terry Reid - but if you don't want to check out the entire thing the discussion around his stolen LP (given to him by Graham Nash) begins at around the 40 minute mark)...
@@trentc7329 Wow ! Thanks for that. Looking at that gentleman's guitar in Australia, and pictures of Buddy playing his guitar, makes it compelling to think it could possibly be Buddy's '54? Plus, I don't think people were faking "vintage" guitars back in the '70's I watched the video and the guitar sounds great ! Cheers
@@BizarrePudding Thank you. That was an awesome interview. Had to watch the whole thing :-) I agree totally with you. Most are inside jobs. I guess the answer, is to never let your "magic guitar" out of your side, even if it has to lay on stage, in sight, while you play #2 :-) Terry is awesome, and still playing !
I remember reading that article about Joe knowing where the guitar was. I remember thinking dude fess up!
Also agree with you 100% on the one owner vintage guitars. I love the story. I recently was able to buy in a 1964 one owner Fender jazz bass and a 1968 one owner Gibson ES125. These belong to a husband and wife folk duo from the 70s. And the wife was selling some of the gear unfortunately because her husband had passed away earlier this year. She still told me she kept a few bases, but she definitely was tearing up as the transaction was going on.
Beano is in Joes collection, that's why he wont say where it is.😂
Paisley is a GREAT guitar player... i don’t really like his music, but his chops are tight...
Ed Kings 59 LP was stolen at gun point by home intruder here in NJ . It was recovered after a collector tried to sell it at a major guitar auction . Interesting story . Red Eye ....Beanos friend haha
Joe has it. it was a Marshall JTM45 2 x 12 combo. 2nd one came from Andy summers. lol
Would be great to see another video on stolen and missing guitars, and how to protect your own.
One cheap way is to hide a "Tile" (usually for things like wallets, keys, pets) in the instrument and case. They hide nicely in electrics under a chamber cover, like the trem cover, and some will even fit in the pickup routing. They don't affect tone or add interference. It's budget Lojacking. Insurance is a good idea, too
Stradivarius wood wasn't from a flash freeze, but entire colder than normal years, like the "Little Ice Age" 1650-1715, and trees grown above certain height above sea level where it's always cold, as it makes the wood dense. A flash freeze isn't going to do that.
I've been strongly considering putting a tile in one of the F holes of my 335.
@@shawnmcvey7789 Sounds like a plan. Maybe use some velcro so you can get it to stay in place, hide it on the back of the top, and retrieve it when you need to?
I saw a rosewood strat at songbirds guitar museum in Chattanooga when it was still open and they had claimed it was the one made for Hendrix. They also had the very first telecaster prototype
I'M sure there's no malice from Joe Banamasa...If anything Joe wants to see Clapton get it back.
If that was the case Eric would already have it back, fact is Joe is quite happy to keep the guitar owners identity a secret because it may compromise Joe's access to yet more vintage instruments and in doing so inflating the prices. People say oh well he's just a custodian, he's a greedy pig that just never can have enough.
He's part of the problem Just the Gibson CEO and Mark agnesi, they all perpetuate the myth of the 59 fuelling inflation in the second hand vintage market and assisting the Gibson custom shop as the only place mere mortals can get close to a 50s spec Gibson.
50 years later and Gibson still can't replicate a factory 50s spec instrument unless your prepared to pay over the odds.
My channel helped Jerry Cantrell get his EBMM back which was a gift from Van Halen.
I thought there was still one more part to the Frampton Les Paul story: wasn't it in the 2018(?) flood in Nashville? No damage per se, but dampness got into it, or at least I thought I heard that in a Frampton interview somewhere?
God Bless!
I’m pretty sure whoever new Cream at that rehearsal still knows Clapton now.
The story of George Harrison's "lucy" is nuts, from purchase, refinish, repurchase by Clapton, gifting to Harrison, theft, and return. Well documented by Norman Harris who was involved.
Also are George's original J160E and Paul's original Hofner 500/1 dubbed "cavern" that are still missing.
Like Bonamassa's story there's one that Paul's bass is in Toronto. George's Gibson J160E (listed as Lennon's) was found in LA and sold at auction a couple of years ago. I think the owner of the Colts has it now. George's family has the other J160E.
Wasn’t Paganini basically a “rock star” violinist?
From about 1800-1834, so much later than Stradivari’s time. But yes, rock star for sure!!!
Bonamassa admitted he was joking.
It's either still in the UK or it was stripped for parts. If it was outside the UK, there would be no reason to keep it hidden. UK law only applies in the UK, US law only applies in the US etc.
There's no Statute Of Limitation' in the UK, so if it appears, in the UK, the guy holding it gets arrested.
Also, Clapton has said he knows where it is, and has said he knows it's still in London.
Likelihood is, it was stolen either because he owed someone money for drugs, or one of 'The Firms' was trying to shake him down.
Gary Moore's No 1 Les Paul is alleged to be the one stolen from Ronnie Montrose.
Also The Jimmy Page Les Paul Custom. Vintage Guitar Magazine has an article.
Bonamassa will announce the supposed Beano guitar once it's in his collection. Until then Joe will continue to charge outlandish ticket prices to his shows until he has enough $$$ for the payoff.
@CasinoGuitars It is in NY State on Long Island.
Keith Richards' Dan Armstrong (the clear lucite one with the skulls) was stolen in the 70's and it's never surfaced. Ron Wood had a custom Zematis that was stolen and it's vanished too.
There IS a video of Billy Corgan getting back the stolen Strat that played on Gish.
"The Guitar Illuminati" 🤣 I have to admit it that gave me a good laugh! 👍
Yeah beside stockpiling instruments the people you have mentioned have systematically pushed up the price to the stupid level we have today to bump their investment. Anyone buying 30% of the available market is just a speculator.
Tyler Bryant's pink Strat is a cool story too...
WOWWWW WE CAN HONESTLY SAY! THAT IF CLAPTON DIDNT DO BEANO, WITH THE LP, BLOOMFEILD, GREEN,AND MANY MORE WOULDVE NEVER USED THIS GUITAR, SO GIBSON OWES CLAPTON, AND WE WOULD NEVER BE OBSESSED WITH THIS SOUND! WOW!
We all know the guitar is hiding in Baxter's hair.
Peter didn’t buy it back. The bloke was enough of a decent gent to simply give it to him. 😊
Back in the late 80’s Marc Bolins Les paul was still being disputed in ownership by the insurance company. His girlfriend at the time of his death, had walked with it and passed it to a friend it ended up being passed between collectors.
I was offered to travel to Newcastle to see it with a collector and played it, the guy didn’t take it.
I think Joe Bonamassa (him again!) owns it now...
Its probably in a secret collection, it might stay hidden because it was stolen ! But it would be great to hear its voice again someday ... Hope that day Eric will be still alive :(
The one guy already said it in this video it's with"The guitar Illuminati"😁
I prefer to refer it as barrowed...
When that guitar was stolen there was no vintage market...
That guitar and Clapton CREATED the vintage guitar market.
It’s not a guitarist’s guitar, but I read that Freddie Mercury’s white Fender Telecaster is missing. Someone, somewhere has that.
Technically the fool guitar could be considered stolen as well.
I heard that the guitar was still in London and Clapton was aware of its whereabouts
Who was it that wanted a pink paisley Tele but couldn’t find one so he got an old black Tele to refinish and when they started sanding it back it was actually pink paisley underneath?
That was Brad Paisley. Bill Crook was the one who was doing the refinish for him. Brad bought the guitar from Chicago Music Exchange for a very good price because it had been refinished.
Love your videos! Thank you 🙏!!!
Slash and Joe Perry have a guitar story.
Peter green said that claptons les Paul was way better than his greenie les pail
Buddy Holly's stolen '55 Strat has never turned up either
John Fogerty gave his ACME Rickenbacker away when CCR was unfolding. 40 years later he found it at Norms guitars. And his wife had to BUY it back for him.
Well, that's different. It wasn't stolen, he gave it away. Thus he gave away the rights to it. It's a shame, though. Hope Ol' Norm gave her a good deal.
Ask Richard Friedman about the Beano.
Coolest though fictional story is The Magic Strat from Ghost In The Attics: More "White Whale" Guitars in Deke Dickerson's The Strat In The Attic 2....check it out....and it is fictional....really....and no urban legend either....
great tale of a guitar supposedly played by Buddy Holly....Dick Dale....Jimi Hendrix....Rory Gallagher....Clapton....Ritchie Blackmore....SRV....Billy Gibbons....a 1958 Fender Stratocaster....THE MAGIC STRAT....
It was obviously Dennis the Menace who stole it.
You guys familiar w the Ronnie Montrose Burst that was stolen and he alleged Gary Moore had? @15:00 Um Paganini brothers!
Anyone know any good local guitar shops in south jersey?
I think Clapton still collects Vintage acoustics whenever he wants a new electric guitar he just gets the fender master builders to build him one
Martin builds him plenty of new acoustics, too.
The guy that have that guitar surely paid a lot of money for it or he is waiting EC to pass away to put it to auction. It's very probable that guy doesn't wan't to give it back to Clapton because he will lose a hella lot of money. Eric will not give him nothing or at least not even close to what he paid for that guitar. He also maybe saw the opportunity to secure that find and decided not to let it go. Maybe is Joe himself, who knows...
Tell Eric! I hope Joe B has.
Google the artist’s management & anyone can get in touch, at least to the agent...

Dirk ziff has the beanos
You can't even prove the original Beano LP is genuine. Clapton hasn't touched it since 1966.
Do collectors have a responsibilty to return stolen guitars? What a stupid question! It is stolen property and all stolen prperty is the property of the original owner only. I am astonished that Bonamassa hasn't turned in the owner (?) of this stolen guitar. I have no respect whatsoever for anyone who would knowlingly permit this to go unreported.
