I think we should be expecting memory prices to crash in the coming weeks and months. Between Newegg trying to dump excess inventory, Microcenter literally giving away DDR5 memory with an AM5 build, and Micron cutting capital investment by 50% due to deteriorating demand, all signs point to a massive glut of supply coming in the immediate future.
There is also the downturn in the PC market generally to consider. Cheap DDR5 atm is more than likely bad DDR5 memory as mentioned above.DDR5 will remain significantly higher than DDR4 for the time being, they will always be able to sell DDR5, demand for DDR4 will slowly start to dry up and that is when DDr4 will become more expensive. Has happened with every version of memory to date.
i love that the tech tubers have gotten to the point where manufacturers reach out to them to give us both good and bad news, appreciate your work makes part buying so much less stressful

After Newegg knowingly threw their customers under the bus due to shady tax schemes, I quit them cold turkey. I dont even care that it got worked out where the consumers (in my state at least) were NOT on the hook, just knowing that Newegg would treat its customers with such disregard put me off them completely.
@@jamesconley6919 from what I gathered on Google it sounds like people were hit with tax bills well after purchasing from new egg. Not sure if this is the same one he's talking about
@@seegee9 There is no shady tax scheme from Newegg. People were committing tax fraud by not reporting their untaxed/out of state purchases on their tax returns like they're supposed to, and then it caught up with them and the states came back looking for the unpaid taxes. People blamed Newegg for this instead of taking personal responsibility for their own tax fraud. There's a lot of problems with Newegg, but taxes are not one of them.
Note @5:30: I recently had a friend who needed an upgrade of their cpu/MB. I was surprised to find that micro center actually sells their cpu/MB combos on amazon, as can be seen. It's basically the same deal as just going to the store, except you can get it shipped for free from amazon. So Newegg is in deep trouble lol...
@@Watchfulfox I second that. If you don’t have a micro center near you, then I do feel sorry for you. It’s a brick and mortar store with employees that actually understand some of the hardware they’re selling. At minimum, they’d know to put ddr5 in an am5 build lol.
I really appreciate Fractal's willingness to get ahead of and make it easy for people to get problems fixed. I wish other companies knew that customer service and transparency was a value add.
@n n It doesn't matter if it came from the factory like that. They're still improvised explosives devices because they're meant to be power supplies, but instead of being power supplies, they explode.
Thanks to this video I just created my support ticket with fractal for my lumen cooler. Never would have known about this issue if it wasn't for the great work you guys do keeping people up to date on issues like these. Keep up the great work, its appreciated greatly.

I so love these news updates, put em at the background when im at work, you guys cover news that would take me hours to read/watch on each piece alone. Cant wait for the undervolts on the Ryzen 7's, i wonder if motherboard manufactureres gonna impliment this into the bios just as auto-OC is baked in now. And wow.. 23:06 they previous announced this announcement, and now to reannounce the announcement of that announcement because it has more things to announce.
I swore off BadEgg, have stuck to my guns, and have not regretted it. It wasn't just the RMA nightmare and their shallow corporate response, it's everything lately. Their customer service has stunk like a sulfur-laden rotten egg for years.
I hope the Eco mode content makes the cut! It seems like the most relevant consumer-end information for adressing the heat concerns with the 7000 series. I'm very interested to see how it fares in your tests, how it affects the need for higher-end coolers and thus the value proposition.
I'd love to see the performance and efficiency difference between Eco Mode and a good undervolt. You can typically push a lot less voltage than stock and still be perfectly stable. My 9750HK laptop ran at 80% voltage, and my new 6980HS machine runs at 90% voltage.
I gave up on Newegg a long time ago. The saddest thing is that they used to be an amazing company before they got bought out. Something something ... live long enough to see yourself become the villain ...
The key mistake people make with companies. Their identity, brand etcetera don't matter, the people running it are really the company. The brand is just a smoke screen. Buy outs are just bait and switch, sometimes it's good, more often it's bad.
NewEgg is the new Frys. I loved Frys at first, but then they started doing things like restocking broken return items, and after a while they lost my trust. Same thing happened with NewEgg. I've made one purchase with them in the last 10 years, and that was just because the part I needed wasn't available anywhere else.
Jesus for real. I remember building my first rig back in '08, all my parts came from Newegg. As far as I can tell, they were a decent enough company to work with then. That certainly doesn't seem to be the case anymore.
@@sirius4k Not really. They were just a good store to buy computer components from. But the point is more like if they had gone out of business instead of becoming what they are now, they'd be remembered fondly.
@@zackakai5173 I never bought anything from me egg, back in the beginning I just went to Fry's Electronics and got what I needed right then. I wouldn't have had the patience to wait for shipping then like I do now. I still have boxes of components I haven't yet opened that I bought 'just in case'.
I recently bought, among other things, an AMD EPYC CPU. It came installed in the chip carrier upside down and in the wrong orientation. Glad I caught that before I bent pins or fried components. I contacted them so they could fix it before another customer had a problem. They clearly didn't care, but they did offer me a $25 discount on my next purchase! I'm totally going to use that the next time I buy a $1K CPU from them! So stoked. I also posted a review so that other customers could be warned -- the review hasn't been posted and seems to have disappeared entirely. That's odd. So yeah, I'm done with them.
I appreciate fractals transparency. I have the torrent and they were swift in fixing that cases issue a year ago. It's alright to make a mistake, it's how you handle it.
I believe that you're wording that incorrectly. I don't believe that it's okay to make any mistake. Because that mistake that you're okay with can cost you your freedom, your life, your job, etc. Artesian Builds made that one mistake that cost the company to go belly up their employees losing their jobs, and customers losing their money. Was that mistake okay?
@@spankbuda7466 in this context, we are talking about a mistake in manufacturing design that was unable to be predicted to someone putting an entire company belly up? Lol what?
@@franknberries7639 Artisan didn't predicted any of what happened either from their mistake(s) that according to you is alright. But since didn't like that Artisan example, was it alright for NZXT or Gigabyte to make their mistakes with their H1 cases and PSU's fire hazards? These manufacturers pay for R&D on their products before releasing their products out to the public to keep issues like this from happening. Do mistakes happen? Of course! Is it alright to make mistakes? No! Manufacturers purposely try and find ways to cut cost when producing their products. These types of manufacturing "mistakes" are avoidable!
@@spankbuda7466 If mistakes are not ok, then I would urge you to delete your account because you've made two comments now that are mistakes. Imagine being so binary, so unable to understand nuance that you are unable to differentiate between R&D/Manufacturing unknowns and the choices of a narcissistic, greedy asshole who ran his company into the ground long before he made a fatal flaw on a stream. Imagine. You also completely missed Franknberries point that its more about how a company responds, not that they made a mistake to begin with. You also really didn't pay attention to the Artesian Builds information because they didn't go under due to 1 mistake. It was a comedy of errors that had started long before and that was the last piece that broke the company. But someone with your ineptitude and inability to understand nuance, that sounds about right. At no point was Frank saying making mistakes ok but rather how you respond to them.

I really wanted to believe that Newegg would get better since Steve's first confrontation with them months ago, but it just doesn't seem like they are going to shape up. It is unfortunate, I used to love them and use them all the time. I have stopped buying anything from Newegg. I mean they are only hurting themselves.

I wish AIO manufacturers would use automotive grade, waterless coolant in their AIOs. Evans is an excellent brand. Its thermal expansion is less than that of water, prevents corrosion and has a ten year service life in industrial applications and doesn't boil till over 300°F. Yeah, it has a yellowish color but, AIOs have solid hoses, you won't see it.
GN is now at the reach where their voice of reason can bring a company like Fractal to heel like a dog at the first sign of an issue. Wow that’s great that they listen to consumers and respect us enough to be forward, but this wouldn’t ever happen without a powerful consumer focused outlet like GN. Great work everyone involved in making this possible for a better PC industry.
I hope they release that pump-block combo for AMD socket (probably AM5) cause thats pretty cool, as either for SFF builds or for a more AIO-style custom loop
I really enjoyed this content Steve - it is so nice to have some new material to go over - as it's been kind of stale tech wise lately . I am sure you are thinking like I use to think before I retired . There just aren't enough hours in the day were my thoughts ...
When I built my computer years ago with Ryzen 2000 series, I got a CPU motherboard bundle at Memory Express. I saw it was the prior generation MB and I had read some of those needed a BIOS update for Ryzen 2000. I asked the employee about it (as I didn't want to deal with that) and he basically said "we aren't idiots, we wouldn't sell you a bundle of they wouldn't work together".
@@Kepe Basically most of the time a regular PC build can follow the rule of "If it fits it sits" if the product or cable fits nicely, it's probably meant to go there. If it doesn't and it's loose or wobbly or too big...it doesn't...Power supply ratings are the one place that doesn't hold true...you still have to figure that out, fortunately there are tons of calculators out there for that.
Good on Fractal Design for leaping into action to sort out this issue right away. Also, I hadn't seen or heard about these Lumen AIO's before now. I think I might buy one once they get them squared away.
When I bought my 3070 back during the craziness I got it via newegg combo where they lovingly bundled it with the infamous exploding PSU which I still have sitting over here as a paper weight in its box. They really don't care, they just want their money.
I remember using Newegg back in the early 2000s after switching over from Tigerdirect for most purchases. It honestly makes me sad to see how far they've fallen.
@gmu_alum08 At this point after the interview they MUST know that Steve is going over them with a magnifying glass, so I'll put my money on them simply not caring anymore.
I had a great deal through Newegg recently when GPU prices bottomed out....got an EVGA (i know!!) 3090...for lower than anywhere else online after weeks of searching and waiting. Arrived from America to the UK in 3 days. Free postage. No extra charges. Incredible!
My Fractal Designs Lumen 280 AIO did the same thing. When first installed on my I7-11700F in a Fractal Designs Focus G, temps rarely got 10c above ambient even with a slightly less than optimal install. However, I started getting thermal throttling to 800 mHz and CPU temps of 100c after about 6 months. The radiator didn't even warm up, but the hoses sure did. Lucky for me, I was able to find someone local with a LNIB Scythe Fuma 2 for a whopping $25 as I had nothing else handy. 😎 Keep your boxes, all of them! I cannot RMI mine as I lost the box during a recent move.
For Ryzen 7000, I know there's IPC gains, but it seems like AMD mostly just made a chip that could handle more watts, which doesn't really interest me. I really want to see how 7000 does against 5000 if they have the latter's TDP ranges for associated classes of chips. I hope that is something that is covered when you do the next Ryzen 7000 review. Like how much is the 7900x really better than the 5900x if both are at 105W TDP?
Newegg isn't all bad. They had a thing where if you use zippay (spread out your bill over 4 payments with no fee or interest) you could save 15% up to $100 on select items. I put in a 7950x and put in the code...didn't work. I added one of the select items, put in the code again and it worked. Then I removed the item and kept the 7950x. It worked. So I got my 7950x showing up today for $599 instead of $699.
Exactly why i have not spent a dime with Newegg in years now. I will continue my boycott of such shady subpar services and products. Thank you Steve. you're a literal life and money saver in this pc world
after years of not ordering from newegg i bit the bullet and bought ONE set of ram that I needed quickly....package was never delivered and Newegg would never have done anything about it until I complained. BINGO! To be a UA-camr you have to create your own news, or even EXTEND new stories. I can understand this from both sides. I think back to the 2000's when I can remember not many problems to think of. But, no UA-cam back then. Did my 9700Pro using floppy drive power connector really have power issues? because of my Q-Tec 550w PSU............haha.. fuck knows, it all worked.
Did you know the average salary of a recent college graduate is the same today as 1991? Did you know that boomers could pay off their school debt with 3 months worth of wages? And their house in 2 years? Just saying.
Regarding corsairs PSU, that is extremely interesting if their high-end type 4 PSU are rated for 225 or 300W output. Assuming better connectors and thicker adapter cabling (AWG16, or even 14 needed?). That would be useful info for extreme overclocking my 2-connector 3090. :)
I assume you have a founder edition 3090, that uses nvidia's proprietary 12pin connector. Corsair's new cable is the 16 pin (12 for power, 4 for data) PCIe Gen5 cable (aka 12VHPWR). These two connectors most likely aren't compatible with each other.
I'm on the same boat with Newegg. All of my hardware came from them got my first few builds. I won't even consider them anymore unless is something I literally can't find anywhere else.
The ATX 3 information came from a Jayz 2cents video where he commented that ATX 3.0 power supplies have an additional 12v HVPWR power plug on the side of the cable. The HVPWR plug apparently communicates the power supply's capabilities to the 40XX card and the card can send its power requirement data to the ATX 3.0 supply. An ATX 2.0 power supply could be adapted to fit that, but would not pass the data back and forth between the power supply and video card, which I presume could result in undervolting the card or overstressing the supply (at least the way he put it). ua-cam.com/video/K6FiGEAp928/v-deo.html
Good summary. There wasn’t really any misinformation presented. It seems GamersNexus just hasn’t gotten around to covering this yet as they been focused on all the new launch reviews. Hopefully things settle and they can dig into this with more detail.
Ive been a vintage and new system builder for about 5 years (professionally, much longer personally), Newegg I used later in the game and about 4 years ago found better pricing than ebay and amazon sometimes. Now I just go to Ebay.
I'm not sure if they still do it or not, but Tiger Direct used to literally just give away their overstock. It would be marked down to free for a while, you would just pay shipping if you could use it. They didn't need to make a questionable combo to get rid of oldish hardware. It might be wise for Newegg to do the same at this point; at least the hardware will be going somewhere where it's usable.
With the weird AMD heat spreader, do you think we might see 3d cold plates with fingers to increase the contact patch, and do you think that could make any actual difference, seeing how effective delidding was?
@@ShinyPeeko I am inclined to assume the same, but I think it’s still something worth testing. It’s not just the metal, but also the silicon of the CPU and MOBO that are also experiencing heat; I am completely unaware of their characteristics when heated. Perhaps there could be a minuscule, yet significant deformation that allows the mounting points of the MOBO the bend slightly upward, resulting in less pressure holding the cooler down.
Steve, thank you for redirecting the offrtacking about newegg deals to mountains. I would be devastated to have youtube suggest me to watch videos about water mountains again.
If anybody is tracking the Arctic replacement kit status thing, I had one of the affected coolers and they did get me a replacement kit after submitting the request. It took a bit longer than I expected, but I live... let's say out of the way and the thing did show up, so no worries there. Replacement was as described, although one of the screws taller screws that they send to replace the shorter profile ones required a lot more pressure than the rest. The cooler now works as expected. And yes, there was gunk in the fins and degradation in the gasket despite the cooler being fairly new. It wasn't affecting performance too much, I got maybe 4-5 C back at best, but it would have gotten worse over time, I'm sure.
@@RezzaNL I did contact them on the provided customer service email and they told me the turnaround time was about two weeks and confirmed when they were gonna ship mine. I did not get an automated shipping confirmation, though. They just used ordinary mail, as far as I can tell. I'd definitely recommend poking them. It is possible my thing went in the mail when I asked instead of being on a set delay. They did get back to me immediately when asked, though. And they were really nice about it, too.
I'm not really looking to upgrade my GPU since I already have an RTX 3090 but AMD's MCM GPU design gets me excited on what performance and features it can offer. 😁
I think the power supply issue isn't that the older power supplies wouldn't be compatible with the 40 series (they are with the adapter) but that the adapter used does not evenly distribute the power between the 3 ends of the adapter. Jay did a video on it detailing it more.
I'm actually excited about EKs pump-block combo unit, I'll be getting an AM5 model once it releases even though I already have a Barrow for AM4. I've been very happy with the Barrow and would still recommend it (it'll be a lot cheaper than EK's counterpart, I don't doubt), but it does have a few flaws. The ports are located on the top rather than on the side, so in a small form factor case you basically must use 90 degree fittings, and even with low-profile ones it becomes quite tall (not compared to normal coolers, but still too tall to be convenient in SFF). The internal reservoir is also very small, which makes the process of filling a loop very tedious. I basically have to screw a second reservoir onto the block and then fill through that, because otherwise the pump will just drain the internal reservoir immediately. Once the loop is full the second reservoir can be easily removed since the block does have two inlets (I use the second one for a thermometer), but it's still a hassle and really awkward in a cramped SFF case. EK's block is much bigger, but because it has inlets and outlets on the side as well as on the top, not needing 90 degree fittings makes it much lower profile in practice. It also looks to have about two or three times the reservoir volume of the Barrow block, which should make filling a loop much more convenient. I'm a bit disappointed they didn't use the extra footprint to fit a D5 pump though. I like to use quick disconnects to hook up an external radiator, but DDC doesn't really have the pressure to handle that.
I like your sentiment on Newegg. You are pointing out problems in their business in hopes they will turn their ship around before it goes over a waterfall. I am with you in my nostalgia of building fantastic systems with them way back in the day.

It's almost like the executives from New egg only met with you as damage control, and they don't actually care
This. They really don't care. It's infuriating tbh.
Thank god am I right. Save some money.
You think ddr5 will be at 8000 in 1 year?
The memory they are giving away is like Walmart brand cheapo DDR5. I wouldn't put it in the same room as my system let alone installed in it.
Man. My first box build was all NewEgg purchased. Scary how bad they have gotten.
Quantitative tightening by the FED will also force prices down over the coming months.

After Newegg knowingly threw their customers under the bus due to shady tax schemes, I quit them cold turkey.

@@seegee9 There is no shady tax scheme from Newegg. People were committing tax fraud by not reporting their untaxed/out of state purchases on their tax returns like they're supposed to, and then it caught up with them and the states came back looking for the unpaid taxes.
Newegg embodies the saying, ‘You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain…’.
Jesus for real. I remember building my first rig back in '08, all my parts came from Newegg. As far as I can tell, they were a decent enough company to work with then. That certainly doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

Nice job calling out Newegg, sadly they're more and more shady each day.

I got something for you…
