GREAT job filming this! Finally a youtube cameraman that knows HOW to film! Who doesnt stop filming the SECOND something happens. You were in grave personal danger, on your back, and you still turned the camera to catch the crash!! You deserve an award from youtube for this video. Best Stunt Cameraman
I've seen a lot of bad things happen in aviation, and you, sir, deserve an award for that video! Somehow, after nearly being killed, you still managed to get the majority of the crash on film!
Now that we are getting recommended these random aviation videos, I am constantly seeing AFP in the comments of almost all of them. Edit: the plane did touch the fence, GroundPound69
It's amazing how clear of people the grass by the parking lot was that day. Usually, there are 20 or 30 people there filming takeoffs on the East-West Water Runway, right where the Beaver came down. Nice duck and roll of the cameraman too! You caught everything! Great job!
Aircraft appeared overloaded for takeoff distance. Float planes have to come up on "step" (like a boat comes up on plane) before you can safely lift. This pilot showed poor judgement in his takeoff attempt.
The fact that the plane is heading straight for the camera, rather than the channel, it look to me like the pilot thought he would have some fun buzzing the camera, but didn't count on the winds changing. Doh!
man is that extremely close, you are lucky twice.1st.the plane didn't hit you and 2nd ,you caught it on camera...awesome job to pan towards the actual crash. thumbs up to you my friend.
if I'm correct, there is two lakes connected by a small canal. since he was departing from the eastern lake to the west, why didn't he turn into the canal for more takeoff room.
he could have had a longer take off run by not turning left, My guess is he saw the camera and wanted to give the guy some great footage of the beaver lifting off and low passing him. Beavers are not highly powered and he did not have enough, Airspeed.
I just have to tip my hat to the guy filming. I'm a pilot and photographer. It takes a lot of composure to avoid being hit then get the camera right back on subject. Nice work!! Glad everyone is ok. The best mistakes are the ones you walk away from and learn from.
I'm led to wonder about the experience this pilot had. Just before the camera man ducked you a can see a wind sock that is quite limp showing maybe a 5 knot crosswind. I wonder if the pilot could have taxied around a bit to the viewers right and tried a takeoff more into the wind. I also wonder if the weight and balance was correct.
Wow....amazing video, your lucky he did not chop you up with the prop! A real shame though, that was a really nice plane. Thanks for posting and glad you did not get hurt. You are a KOOL camera man!
There is seemingly more water ahead if the pilot steers correctly. I guess you know about the wind. It appeared from view that because the plane was headed for land, the pilot pulled up and stalled out, and started to spin left. Did the wind cause the plane to skid heavily across the water to the left, from power up?
Do enlighten me as to what "rule of thumb" is used by bush pilots to see if they have enough room left to get airborne when taking off? What's the answer on this one?
The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures. Reported wind at the airport approximately 3 minutes after the accident was from 020 degrees magnetic at 3 knots, with no recorded gusts.
Well listening to the recording of the tower communication, it seemed as if he was taking off. They did tell him not to delay due to approaching taffic, so I am not sure if he was in a rush to line up and get out, or if it was a takeoff gone bad from the get go.
cherrypoots, FYI I've spent many years commercially fishing in Alaska and had the opportunity to fly with monguse39 on many many occasions. His experience in single engine land and see planes in all kinds of weather, conditions and aircraft. is beyond that which most people could ever hope to accomplish in a life time. His assessment of this accident is no doubt spot on. And your comment re: beavers taking off in 35knt crosswind? Why do you think not? Is 35knt xwind too much?
Some reports in the news claim it was a wind gust changing its direction. I think instead the pilot was unable to put the floats on its steps. You can clearly see that he is ploughing through the water and therefore cannot gain speed.
Is there a post crash follow up video at all? MAN! that was crazy. Nice footage by the way. Love the quality of this camera. Any special settings with it to get this quality or is it just the stock default point and shoot settings?
I think you have the wrong blog. Who said anything about landings? The subject at hand is an aircraft taking off at slow speed in a crosswind. The crumpled up aircraft at the end says it all.....unless you have a better explanation.
@Castorero1 If you look up the tail number, apparently this wreck was caused by a cross-wind that the pilot could not correct for with just rudder input. I don't really buy that, and I'm not sure why he wouldn't chop throttle when he went that far off "center-line" either. Big time pilot error if you ask me.
I am with you F4C ! It looked like a takeoff attempt to me. Where did you fly the F4c? I was at Alconbury, England from 1966-1969 and that is what we flew. I was in the 32TRS.
The airplane veered to the left toward a steep bank, and the pilot was unable to correct the deviation with the rudder. He did not feel that he could reduce power as he would slam into the bank. The airplane lifted off, but the float collided with the top of the bank. The airplane cart wheeled about 160 degrees to the left before coming to rest on its right side. It sustained substantial damage to the wings, fuselage, and floats.
Although I don’t know the full facts to this incident. I am a low time private pilot myself and still learning every day. One thing I am going to say is that engine noise didn’t sound right at all! Despite that, hope the pilot was okay! we all make mistakes! pilots are not superhumans there is that element of pilot error at some of each pilot career! All you can do Live and Learn 👌🏾 #Aviationislife
holy cow. that is amazing footage. i was like 'um that plane is coming right at you'. i don't know what the rotation speed is for a sea plane but it looked pretty slow...but it is coming straight at the camera so you can't tell. there was a crosswind though (per wind sock) but not terrible. Very happy no one was hurt... made me cringe when i read there were 2 kids onboard.
how can you possibly tell his power was not set correctly? and also he didnt have full flap because full flap on those things looks like 90 degrees with 15 degrees ont he ailerons. and power doesnt give you ya control. airspeed does.
This video is 15 years old!!!!!! What a quality
Sony for you😅

Cameraman never dies. Seriously though, most videos end with the person pointing it at the ground and he finished it well!
UNBELEIVABLE. Your one brave soul to stay in there that long. Great video, and notice that the plane didnt even touch that fence lol.
Airforce proud before he was famous?
Now that we are getting recommended these random aviation videos, I am constantly seeing AFP in the comments of almost all of them.
Edit: the plane did touch the fence, GroundPound69
It did hit the fence, watch it again, you can see the fence falling just as he gets it back in view ....
How's your vision these days?
Thanks for getting up so fast so we could see the crash!

They don't call those things de Haviltake-offs, they call them de Havillands for a reason.

Wow ! Great video ! You stood your ground to get the video longer than I would have and I run into fires for a living !
Great filming under the circumstances !!
The DHC-2 is such a great plane...it almost hurts to see (and hear) that thing crunch. Glad to hear noone was injured/killed.
He had NO airspeed...................ridiculously pilot error.
What's more, he had plenty of lake left to get it up to a decent speed.
I thought he was taxiing! The engine sounds like its at half throttle. Wow!
"I am going to yank this aircraft off the water and force it to fly!"
I’d say he had no waterspeed.
Ridiculous Pilot ,error. Big time!
Glad you and everyone else are okay. Really fantastic footage! Nice work.
Cameraman couldn't get out of the way fast enough due to giant balls dragging on the ground.
A cameraman could survive the judgement day
Cameraman never dies!
Thank you for turning to get the actual crash. Excellent filming.
What the hell was that?! Talk about bad airmanship, judgement etc. etc... Pull his ticket!!!
props to the cameraman to keep filming the crash !!!!! one of the only videos ive seen that shows the whole crash basicly
So, ah........why? And a slight right turn, looks like a mile of water available? Disclaimer: I've NEVER flown a Beaver.
Holy Crap. That's some damn good filming! Glad everyone was safe!
he pulled it into the air and stalled
As we say in the fire service, "Never lose your head over a piece of tail" Glad no one got hurt!
That's a lousy way to get a nice old bird on land.
It’s amazing that this footage exists

Tip: Next time check wind direction. Just spot the waves and spot the wind vane at 0:52
if I'm correct, there is two lakes connected by a small canal. since he was departing from the eastern lake to the west, why didn't he turn into the canal for more takeoff room.
I really cant tell...But looks like a little too much flap? Doesnt look like a tail wind from the wind sock? What did NTSB say?
the video quality is amazing
Wow. First video of an accident I've seen is 1080p. Props man. Also you've got balls dude.
Wow! thank god that nobody was injured.
I think that is the best quality of a plane crash video ever!!! :D

Was that Harrison Ford?
Amazing! best vid ive seen up to yet! How lucky it didnt end up any worse! Great vid, thanks for sharing. Greeting's from Cyprus!!!
The recorder was incredible close to injury, luckily those on board survived the crash.
I'm late to the party..but was this the original camera man never dies!!!? What a crazy video.
Great video! Wonder why the pilot didn't continue down the lake rather than try to take off without enough speed?
Thank goodness everyone was safe. how windy was it that day?

@wingnutz999 wow, I didn't know you worked for the NTSB or was there...
Why didn't he keep it going on the water on the ravine that you can see at the end alongside where it made contact.
I wonder if the engine had bad compression or if it was just too heavy.. These usually take off quicker than that.
Wow, excellent filming! What was this pilot doing??
Excellent video and I'm happy everyone made it out alive and ok!
I cant find the NTSB report for this :/

hmm shall i use the whole 3 mile lake or just this strip?
what model camcorder did you use to record the video???
Talk about incompetence. The pilot, not the cameraman. Great job filming this 😅
You say the wind kicked up but the foliage in the shot isn't moving. He was going to buzz you and blew it.
how can you possibly tell his power was not set correctly? and also he didnt have full flap because full flap on those things looks like 90 degrees with 15 degrees ont he ailerons. and power doesnt give you ya control. airspeed does.
Surely it wasn't just a shift in the wind that caused the crash...? Was it overloaded? (That, or an under-revving engine is what it looks like.)
What camera did you use for this? It's VERY clear.
why try to take off on the shortest part of the lake?
What did they determine the cause?
@ .41 secs. the wind cone has no wind. I'm just guessing.
Very awesome camera work, diving for cover, still managed to get camera around to catch the crashing plane..... Wow, that's as close as it gets.
Yes I agree, he is head stright toward the bank with the wind from his right side. there was no correction made for the wind untill he left the water
Awesome High Def footage!
