Something else that was mentioned is that due to CSX adopting PSR, one of the ways they cut costs was starting the practice of furloughing a bunch of their employees, INCLUDING THE DRUG AND ALCHOHOL TESTERS. So not only did the engineer himself fail to show up to the scheduled tests, but there were also less testers available to handle him and all the other engineers and conductors on the railroad!!
oh wow, that would, in fact do it...
It sounds like it was something of a perfect storm. It always seems like companies cut costs to save money, and it’s always in the wrong departments.
Oh no…it’s the consequences of their own actions!
@@leightonmoreland Youte right-you shouldn’t drink and railroad-even if you are hauling literal garbage in Ohio
I keep saying it: PSR is just the worst ideas of the bad old days of the 60s repackaged.
The engineer was drunk enough after six hours that had he been here in Sweden he would have gone to prison for up to three years.
0.08% is illegal to drive in most states... He was so far beyond pickled that I would have to call him a salted fish.
4:31 The little "Boing" at the end of the crash description sells it. 😂
This reminds me of some of the stories I've been told by old New Haven guys about five man crews and the only one sober enough to prop the engineer up to leave the yard at the beginning of the shift was the junior member. Because he wasn't an alcoholic yet.
That is entirely believeable for the NH
America back then common
Reminds me of similar stories about the Delaware & Hudson.
What do you mean “yet?”
I enjoy the Railroad Accident Comedic Review Board format.
It's essentially Well There's Your Problem but short and railroad-focused
@@robertbalazslorincz8218 I didn't want to say that, since it's not a derivative work - but the vibes are very similar.
Fewer slides here, though.
"It's an engineering podcast. With limes."
As a current resident of Ohio all of these things you said were painfully true also you cant leave... the roads are either closed because of construction or ice.
I left twice and was pulled back
Horay for cheap housing in crappy places!
0.4% blood alcohol content is considered the "lethal" limit, but some people can go above that. For example, one guy in Lithuania was caught driving a car with 0.84% alcohol level. Yeah, double the lethal limit.
I think you mean legal?
@@jlwalker2965 No, the legal limit here is 0.04%, so the guy was 20 times over it.
0.4% is the LD50 (AFAIK), it means that there is 50% chance you will die when you drink that much alcohol. However, different people have different tolerances, someone may die from less alcohol and someone can drink double that and still be conscious and somewhat able to drive a car.
if they're living after doing something like that, neither Jesus or Satan want them. Sound very untrue, but people survive wicked crazy things still.
I always found that peak train operating performance is when you're around .1% BAC per mile of train behind you
I went and read about this collision on the NTSB's website. What makes things worse for the engineer is that in post-wreck testing not only did they find a high blood alcohol level but they also found marijuana in his blood, but were not able to conclude as to whether or not marijuana contributed much to the accident. So not only was the engineer drunk but he was probably stoned off his rocker, too. Nah, if he didn't get suspended for a while he definitely got fired after the accident.
Oh, good lord.
When some fellows from the Highway Patrol walk you off the job….he will never work in a safety sensitive environment for the rest of his career, or shambles thereof….when he gets out.

Did you notice how 20 gets unintentionally Limed at 2:38? She's probably over there thinking "What the hell did I do?!"
Layton has slotted PERFECTLY into the Gary Brannan slot in this game.
I can't decide if Brett is Chris or Matt
@@Brok3nC4rrot Brett is Chris and jimmy is matt
@@WolfInOverdrive-tz4im Hate to play into the "I am X person in the X" type stuff... but when you're right, you're right.
I live on the internet/Presenter: Hyce = Tom Scott
Tall bearded lumberjack type: Brett = Chris
Potential aspy "I bought a trainset/ice cream machine type": Jimmy = Matt (and me fwiw).
The older dad-jokes guy with glasses, probably married, a hoody, a flat cap because yorkshire: Layton = Gary
oh, I can already tell this is going to be a good season if Jimmy is around the whole thing. the puns are real and worth it.
Finally! The second season! *Air compressor blast sounds*
Hot damn, I knew this would be amazing and yet it is even more amazing. I love this this, yes to all of this. Really hope this can be a live show some day.
We can dream.... here's hoping!
The 3/4 idiots videos are the best things on this entire channel.
I can’t speak for other railroads, but today (2024) on NS, restricted mode does not in any way prevent you going pat a stop signal.
I love this format, by the way!
Oh that brings back memories. The east bound train crew was from my terminal.
I can only imagine east bound train's engineer and Conductor collectively going "fuck." When the noticed that West bound train wasn't stopping.
The engineer wasn't drunk, the engineer was hyce 😂
Glad to see this has returned, can’t wait for more
My only comment to this is, it is too short!
But don't take this too harshly, because I would probably say it is too short even if it was 5 hours or even 5 days long...
Yup, I am definitely in love with 3/4 of an idiot show, just remember to switch PTC to NTC (Negative Train Control) if it gives you problems! :D
I cannot begin to say what was the best, that you guys made a new 3/4 of an idiot or the beginning, Jimmy from the cooc video is there and he's AMAZING and hilarious puns in the beginning or just Brett with his SHEEEEEEP XD
Love your show, dudes, I usually rewatch an episode on lunch break. Never not puts a smile on my face, can’t wait for more
Hi Mark great video man glad this series and back and I’m glad you guys got Jimmy on. Look forward to seeing more of this soon!
These are great! Never stop these, informative and humorous
Y'all share 3 braincells but 2 of em are on fireup duty.
First time watching an episode of 3/4 Idiots and i'm already in love!
At the grande we don’t think PTC is a safety feature we call it die like a man
we die like men here.....in a mangled flaming heap at the bottom of a curve just like General Palmer intended
@@leightonmoreland Air brakes should have prevented this
Wow, imagine walking in on these guys lmao. Keep up the great work, you guys are awesome :)
That was fantastic! Can’t wait to see more (Also apparently 1/2 pint bottles still fit in overall bib pockets )
YAY JIMMY'S WITH THE 3/4 IDIOTS!!! Loved it, thank you!!
This collision works with the Swiss cheese accident model, but ye gads the cheese-hole of that drunk engineer.... And I grew up in New Jersey and lived in Ohio for a few years. Every statement is spot on including the buckeye comment - although I highly recommend the candy also called a buckeye.
20 and 491 are sitting there like "These idiots and their *insert Huber 6 chime here* LIMES!!!!"
3/4 idiot show makes me laugh every time I watch an episode. Hyce keep it up
Love the format looking forward to what to what lies ahead
I have lived in Ohio for 16 years, and I can confirm that this state is pretty boring, except for Northern and Southern Ohio. Those areas are nice. However, it isn't boring when it comes to trains, as we're a pretty big crossroads state, with a lot of good and well-known railfanning spots. But, the traffic, especially in Marion, is often hit or miss.
Oh yeah.
It is good to see you guys back in the Roundhouse.
You guys did a good job of making this entertaining
I never knew that I needed a railroad themed Citation Needed in my life, but now I do lol.
2:38 THE 20 GOT LIMED
SO FUNNY
This is great lol. I enjoyed the first season, but I can tell this is gonna be good. I also have a feeling that you're gonna need even more limes
Ok, this is the first episode I ever saw of this and it is mad fun. Off to watching the apparent first season I go.
That was fun to watch .. you guys were hilarious.
Thank you
Thank you for another episode of this glorious show
Is that the moment where we as fans step in, write fanfictions and then ask for a video of them reading said fanfictions? 😂
This is the first time i have seen someone else do this format, i love thos vetsion as well
This was a hoot to listen to and watch! Love it
Came back to this episode, gotta love the good ol' Airplane references. :)
God. Great job as always guys, this was hilarious… LIMES!!!!!
Layton cracking the Airplane! jokes right off the bat tells me we’re off to a flying start…
MYSTERY CITRUS!
Limes
🍋
Control Point Springs, I know that location very well. I spent many hours driving conductors around Carey, OH putting together stone trains. It was a fun job but the pay was bad(non-railroad employee, 3rd party contractor). I watched a SD40-2 partially derail at a grain solo switching job. Frozen switches suck!
Yay! My current fave series on youtube is back!!!!!
Hey, Alabama ain't that bad sir! But jokes aside, glad to see this come back, always fun to watch.
PTC restricted mode will still allow you do anything you want to this day. The only change they did was make restricted mode complain if you moved too long in restricted mode.
CSX (crash, smash, explode) "How tomorrow will end"
I live in Ohio. Your collective impression of our state is spot on
🤣🤣🤣 I can't stop laughing!!!
Ok the word play on CSX reminds me of when i was still a conventional highway flagger. I am a D.O.T/S.E.O crash and cone truck operator for freeways/expressways but we flagged for a utility company called henkels and McCoy and the running joke was they were called crinkles and destroys. They used to be notorious for not useing stabilizer pads and the outriggers would crinkle roads. and the work they did would need to be fixed soon after installed or they would destroy stuff as they rushed working. Lol they are an excellent professional group that do great work nowadays but years ago, fuggin crinkle and destroy.
"Cool whip" "Cool Huhwhip" "Cool Whip!" "Cool Huhwhip!"
Probably didn't think anyone would catch that one!
Boy i love this format!! Please keep it up .... and don't be shy to steal from tom scott and his ppl a bit! ;)
You got the same spirit.... ;)
This just makes me want to see you on a Well There's Your Problem episode...
5:25 There's the joke I was looking for lol
You just gained another subscriber my good sir!
This is probably the video of the 3/4 show with the most funny moments lol
Finally! Keep the 3/4 and idiot coming my lad!
this was funny can't wait for episode 2
Brett: a wetland with a mouse lol
Oops, sorry I mean Leighton
Love it Hyce! Shout outs to Leighton, Brett, and Jimmy!
Also, Pixel gang!
Yup! Pixel 6 Pro here.
@@Hyce777 ayyyyy same! I knew you were a true man of culture and this is just further proof lmao 🤣
I see grandma moved a whole 3 stalls, and keep the content coming!
Thanks! Here’s some money for more paper and writing utensils
Thank you :)
You guys are very funny, lovely video 👍🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 keep up the good fun-puns 🤣😆😂🚂
Beautiful lol 😂 I definitely learn something
16:22 thats gotta be the funniest imitation Brett has done
Man do I love 3 quarters of one idiot. And this like game thing
Jimmy From the Cog looks like Bandicam Gary Brannan
Great Airplane references. :)
HYCE, HYCE, HYCE! You have to go to DollyWood and see their epic post war steam trains. There just amazing. If you do go rent a cabin though because then you get the experience. Anyway please consider this idea for a video I think lots of people would love to see a reaction from you seeing them.
I have been eagerly waiting. I suppose I had to wait six extra days. The extra wait was worth it.
Edit. I probably missed it because I had forgot to subscribe before 😉
Another smashing success.
I remember when a steam locomotive's engineer killed many on board due to being intoxicated and carelessly went way over the speed limit and ran his train off the tracks at a sharp curve. He was charged with manslaughter. The locomotive was either repaired or scrapped.
Oh heavens, this season is gonna be crazy
6:22 OH S*** - I think I might have seen the locomotive dashcam footage from that crash! The train on the mainline track was still rolling slowly forward as the other train was starting to head onto the siding!
Carrying on the legacy of The Technical Difficulties, absolutely based.
4:42 Brett activated his inner child mode😅
you know the video is good when you immediately start it over again. (Also, somebody keep a count of how many times Jimmy gets Limed)
Also-Also--on your comment about "the train can't swim out of Ohio." the car ferry SS Marquette & Bessemer No. 2 would like to disagree with you. Or it would, if we ever figure out where the heck it vanished to in 1909.
lmao
Yes it’s back and all of you are so funny
This has "that 70s show" style vibe.
for this one a 6 pack would have been a good comedic prize :P
As an Ohioan, I loved all the Ohio slander! Great for laughs
Just ordered my ES&D mug so I can enjoy my coffee like a man of action...those actions might just get me piss tested though.
Opening the show with Airplane! quotes. Nice.
Y'all are hilarious!
so wierd question about ptc on the big boy, can the big boy just not turn on restricred mode? or would the diesel just apply brakes to keep it in under 10 mph?
Hey I'm from New Jersey... and they are totally right. It sucks here, though up north isn't bad.
At train heading west and a train heading east ?
Nobody told me there would be math involved
as a native ohioan all roads lead to columbus. there is no escape.
I'd absolutely love to see a collab between 3/4 of an idiot and Technical Difficulties.
Or perhaps the Fat Electrician. He would have fun.
Hyce, I see the bottom car on your shirt is moving towards us VERY fast, while the top car is moving away from us VERY fast
Leyton kept mentioning animals. Lol. Fun off the cuff fact did you know that the live stock car was patented by a Mr Zadok Street in if i remeber correctly 1870, he submitted 2 designs.i beleave 1 was the livestock and the other was the more enclosed poultry car which well the cargo is still live stock. But Live stock cars were used all the way until early 1980s out lived the caboose by a few years. They no longer transport animals in bulk by rail anymore no need cattle drive from texas north to transcontinental to ship east to be killed when there are so many slaughter across the nation now its cheaper to use trucks and ship by rail in refer cars as steak and milk. .
Oh god Eric shapeshifted
Well it looks like Drunk engineer also forgot the tender of 346!😂
The next time that you do citation needed you should do East Broad Top railroad number 18 or the Strasburg railroad 475 and the excavator at Paradise Pa.
Why didn't PTC prevent this crash (my guess? Super train had something go wrong mechanically and blew up. ((Before seeing story)))
Edit: Oh it's two trains. New guess is picked a switch in a crossover.
Double edit: I still say Layton was right. It was PSR. Profit over safety.
Triple edit: wow. I was way off. Dude was hammered!
