I’ve been watching A LOT of videos lately, trying to decide which SD pickups to get. This has helped me decide on the 59 for bridge and neck. So good to see them clean and driven, as well as split. Great video, thank you
I heard a comment about the '59 set that's proven to be true. You can get a lot of good tones out of this set. I've seen very good slide players say this about the '59 combo and even players you'd guess used much more exotic after market pickups that cost much more.
Hi Trent. Had 59's in my 60's conversion LP and kept he 59' in the neck which is very Clapton Cream sounding but replaced the bridge with a SD custom shop A4 magnet Humbucker that sounds awesome and a great combination!
Best review 👌. Everyone only plays with lots of gain and never clean. They sound awesome clean and overdrive. I am going to install in my xaviere XV500. Let me ask you, does upgrading the wiring really make that big a difference?. The stock wiring is quality, but am considering going all out and upgrade to original spec 50's les paul wiring with these pickups.
Yes this was the best demo video you could put together !! The problem with most demo videos I run into is guys are always in drop D and that droning sustain -everything runs into each other can't differentiate tones. I have a 59 neck position in a Charvel and it's just heavenly tones you get. I'm thinking about dropping these in a les Paul That's what brought me here!! That ax is sweet! 👍
After seeing this video, I want to buy this 59 bridge pickup to put in my Les Paul. Seems there is more than one version of the 59? There is the SH-1 (1 conductor), and the SH-1 (4 conductor), and the SH-16. I’m assuming this is not the 16, and the 4 conductor is for coil splitting? Thanks for this fantastic video!
I mean TBH who’s saying the original PAFs didn’t have that “bite”, there’s no non-record recordings of an original 50s Gibson because instruments have shown to change in terms of sound and feel after a long period of time let alone almost 70 years
If you fret the first and sixth strings at the 22nd fret I have the neck pickup about and 1/8th inch below the first and sixth strings while fretting them at the 22nd fret.
The bobbins were picked at random from a bin. The vendor for the black bobbins ran out of black and had to substitute white for a short time. Since covers were going on the pickups, no thought was given to bobbin color.. and white bobbins were used right along with black... and they were pulled at random... either coil could be black or white. I have no idea where you got the "black coil on the screw side only on zebra PAF's" ?! This is a myth and a wives tale.
I read somewhere that the bridge duncan '59 is based on the pickup that duncan custom built for page in his #1 LP (not the 'whole lotta humbucker), have you heard this?
I have a 59(with split) in the neck position paired with a JB model, great pickup. Guitar is a Mayones Setius with Floyd. I compared them with the 59 Dimarzio pickups in my 1975 Les Paul and there is no audible difference really.
Hi there, sounds great! Do you know if those model pickups can be installed in an evh Wolfgang guitar where the current Wolfgang pickups are somehow mounted directly to the body? Thanks!
You would have to check out the size of the 59's against the guitar to see if they are small enough to fit. Also if the size is correct you will need to mod the Duncans by rounding off the mounting feet and drilling out the mounting holes to accept the larger wood screws to direct mount this pickup. :)
holy crap man i have the same amp, blackstar ht5r, i really like the sounds you get with the full on humbucker mode, i have an epi les paul standard plus top pro which has epiphone probuckers and i actually really like them and find them to suit vintage sounds very well, i was thinking if it would be worth it upgrading to the Duncan 59s, the probuckers are alnico 2 thouh
I really like the Duncans in this Les Paul, that said, if you really like the sound of your pickups then you might want to just keep them :), If you do chose to swap pickups these Duncans are a great choice.

Wow, the 59 sounds incredible in the neck position, both in full humbucking mode and coil tapped. Which of the two coils is activated when you coil-tap the neck?
That is a great question. By using the phase switch with the coil tap I can get either of the coils. ( the Cream or the Black bobbin). In this video you are hearing the Black Neck coil when in single coil mode. Great to hear that you liked the sounds :) Trent
