By 1984, after releasing eight studio albums, the Scorpions struck gold with one of the most iconic mainstream metal songs of the decade. The band's signature sound, driven by Rudolf Schenker’s catchy rhythm riffs, truly shined in “Rock You Like a Hurricane.” This song’s unforgettable intro riff has become a staple in rock music. With Matthias Jabs’ melodic leads and Klaus Meine’s charmingly quirky lyrics, the Scorpions earned their place as megastars. Addressing the debate over how a rocking hurricane should sound, Schenker noted that the double-meaning lyrics add a unique, "sexual hurricane" twist. Dive into the story behind this legendary track and see why it remains a metal anthem!

You should really listen to 'Still Loving You'. I know you guys like great vocalists, and in that song, you can really hear how talented and strong his voice is. Edited to add: Still Loving You is also just a very beautiful and kinda sad song. I recommend reading the lyrics before or as you're listening. It's very heartfelt, and the way he sings, it sounds like it's coming right out of his soul. It's one of my all-time favorites. I have had it on my playlist since the 80s. haha

Scorpions is the longest running German hard rock band and they have culminated a massive worldwide audience. They spent a decade struggling before success came and they were arena ready by 1978 when they took on the world.
Formed by Rudolf Schenker (guitar) in Hanover, (West) Germany in 1965... Scorpions were originally a beat rock combo band and were huge fans of British rock in the 60's... They made the decision to sing in English because they wanted a wider appeal... Rudolf became friends w/ another local singer Klaus Meine, a short fellow w/ a powerful voice... Rudolf had a teen brother Michael Schenker who was an exceptional lead guitarist at 14 and recommended him for Klaus' band Mushrooms... By 1970, Klaus' band broke up... Scorpions were changing their sound and Rudolf suggested that Klaus Meine (vocals) and brother Michael Schenker (lead guitar) join ... The band was getting into the psychedelic 'space rock' music of Jimi Hendrix Experience, Cream, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, etc... and Scorpions recorded their debut album 'Lonesome Crow' in 1972 in that style of music. They opened for a UK rock band U.F.O. and Michael Schenker accepted an offer to join the band and left Scorpions in 1973... he became a guitar legend in his own right w/ his career in U.F.O. and Michael Schenker Group (M.S.G.)
After the breakup of the original Scorpions, Klaus and Rudolf were not ready to give in... They teamed up w/ Ulrich Roth (lead guitar, now Uli Jon Roth) and Francis Buccholz (bass) and reformed Scorpions in 1974... releasing their 2nd album 'Fly to the Rainbow'... w/ a heavier rock sound... Scorpions released more studio albums like 'In trance' (1975)... 'Virgin Killer' (1976) and 'Taken by force' (1977)... but lacked label support and proper management in those years and were only able to tour in Europe as they evolved musically... They were known for their early hits like - "Speedy's coming" ... 'In trance' ... 'Sails of Charon' ... "We'll burn the sky"... 🔥🔥
Herman Rarebell (drums) joined Scorpions in 1977 and the band acquired new management and had a gold record ('Taken by force') in Japan by 1978 and did their first tour there to huge audiences... a live album 'Tokyo Tapes' was recorded in Japan and released in 1978 as guitarist Ulrich Roth left the band... lead guitarist Michael Schenker briefly rejoined Scorpions in 1978 after falling out w/ U.F.O. but left shortly after... Matthias Jabs (lead guitar) joined Scorpions in 1979.
In '79, Scorpions had a new label and toured the USA for the first time for the album 'Lovedrive'... it sold gold (half million copies) in the US as Scorpions transformed into an arena rock band and scored a platinum record 'Animal magnetism' in 1980.
However, Klaus Meine required surgery on his vocal chords in 1981 and took a year to recover... Scorpions loyally refused to replace him and waited while Klaus recuperated... He was finally able to sing again and recorded the album 'Blackout' in 1982 - it became another platinum success... 'Love at first sting' (1984) became Scorpions' biggest selling album at 3x platinum w/ 'Rock you like a hurricane'... and the hit ballad "Still lovin' you"... Scorpions appealed to both the men for their hard rock songs and women for their tender ballads... Their massive world tour in 1984/'85 was captured on their live album 'World wide live' in 1985.
Scorpions returned in 1988 w/ 'Savage amusement' and played Russia (then USSR) for the first time in '88 and again on the Moscow Peace Festival in '89... Klaus Meine saw the changes and was inspired by the tour of Russia to write the ballad 'Wind of Change'... which became one of their biggest hits from their album 'Crazy world' in 1990, which sold 2x platinum in the US.
Some of Scorpions' biggest hits from that era - 'No one like you' ... 'The Zoo' ... 'Holiday' ... 'Is there anybody there' ... 'Rhythm of love'... 'Tease me, please me' ... 'Believe in love' ... 'Arizona' ... 'Make it real'... 'Under the same Sun'... 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Longtime bassist Francis Buccholz left Scorpions and was replaced by Ralph Rieckerman (bass) in 1993 for the album 'Face the heat'... Longtime drummer Herman Rarebell left the band in 1995 before Scorpions recorded the 'Pure instinct' album in 1996... James Kottak (drums) from the US joined Scorpions in 1997... but the 90's grunge/ alternative rock scene had decimated Scorpions' popularity and they struggled to sell records in that decade... They even released a pop-influenced album 'Eye II Eye' in 1999... In 2000, they recorded an album of their classic songs w/ a symphony orchestra as 'Moment of glory'.
In 2004, Pawel Maciwoda (bass) joined Scorpions for the album 'Unbreakable' ... and the band saw their popularity rise again by 2010 w/ the albums 'Humanity Hour 1' (2007) and 'Sting of the tail' (2010)... Scorpions considered a 'farewell tour'... but their rising popularity worldwide prompted them to reconsider... However, after recording the album 'Return to forever' in 2015, longtime drummer James Kottak was fired due to his alcohol abuse... Mikkey Dee (drums) joined in 2016; he had been Motorhead's drummer since 1992 until the band ended in 2015.
James Kottak passed away in early 2024 (R.I.P)
Scorpions carried on touring and their latest record 'Rock believer' was released in 2022.

Best early scorpions IMO (1970's) are We'll Burn The Sky and Sails Of Charon. Both with guitar player Uli Roth who dated Jimi Hendrix's ex girlfriend. He is considered the originator of classical influenced metal guitar soloing. Charon has been covered by about a hundred metal bands due to its guitar work. The first song I mentioned is a greay ballad amd was written with the woman mentioned. Roth quit in 1978 because he did not like the more commercial direction they were going.

First of all, Richie Blackmore is the founder of neoclassical rock and metal, and it all started with HIM!!! Jon Roth left because he couldn't give them anything as a guitarist, first of all, he's mediocre and a CHEAP FAKE for Hendrix, he hindered the development of the band, and only the completely UNIQUE AND OUTSTANDING MATTHIAS JABS came and changed the situation and the course of the entire Scorpions history forever!!! Forget about Sails of Charon,it's garbage!!! Matthias, author and performer of the most technically difficult solos in the history of Scorpions(and the most melodic, besides)!!! Many famous guitarists(including Hammett,Sambora,Schenker Jr)...They can't play HIS solos when they play Scorpions songs because they all don't have HIS SKILL!!! Matthias is one of the most technical guitarists in the TOP 10 in the world!!! So,it's good that Jon Roth is gone, the Scorpions don't need a "low-grade Hendrix", otherwise they wouldn't have become what they have become!!! With Roth, they would have continued to play in clubs for some time and then would have broken up and sunk into oblivion!!!

The video is kinda goofy but most '80's videos were, great song though, Scorpions went through a few phases until they found the perfect formula at just the right time for their brand of rock; their original lead guitarist, Uli John Roth, is a superb player, considered one of the progressive guitar greats, worth checking out his own solo music outside of the Scorpions.

The Scorpions remind me of Krokus. I might be the only one who thinks that. Check out Screaming In The Night by Krokus.

The Scorpions were a bit like the BeeGees in they tried all kinds of things over the years before they found something that brought them into fame.

MTV played this video into the ground back when it came out for at least two years it seemed. Good tune, not my favorite Scorpions at all though.
