Wow, I had forgotten how many of those early 90's PSAs were directed at kids. No wonder I was so terrified that when I went to high school I was just gonna be bombarded with people trying to get me to try drugs. Of course, when I actually got to high school I only ever had one person ask if I wanted to smoke pot, and when I said no she was like, "Okay cool, I'll see ya later."

Than I walked home yelling profanities and racial slurs at passing school buses.

I've never had someone tell me they're trying to stop, not dealers anyway. Another friend did quit because I could physically see change in him (he was on pretty bad drugs, not weed), but the dealers I've met have pretty much just been cool with my choice not to use what they're selling, but they let me know that if I change my mind then they're there

For any none Americans: Anti-drug commercials here have a history of being cringe-worthy. Because they try to be hip and 'cool with the kids' (god I feel old) while trying to spread their message at the same time. So they always end up being terrible and an unintended joke. Only the more recent ones that are serious and show the real effects of drugs actually work...

Smoking marijuana gets such a bad rep when smoking tobacco is worse
in my opinion tobacco is basically a legal drug but as someone that has lost a family member to smoking it sickens me to know the terrible truth that they can't make tobacco illegal to smoke.

I remember that Above The Influence ad running on TV when I was in college. Just like the Irish in this video, my dorm roommates made LOTS of blow-up doll jokes!

I am not taking the piss when I post this, but there's nothing I find funnier or appreciate more than the Irish sense of humour coupled with their equally unique expressions. And as sad as it may sound, watching so many of these videos has truly been good craic! Cheers to each of you!

When those above the influence commercials came out someone started an under the influence clothing brand and just about everyone I grew up with in east county San Diego had one of those arrows pointing downwards stickers slapped on their dirt bike

It's a very poor character flaw that stems from pride and the denial of seeing that yes, what the country was doing was wrong at that time and that they fell victim to it before, also. Those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it's mistakes in the future. Instead of being mature adults and realizing the opportunity to reflect and correct past mistakes they act like victims that were backed into a corner by others. For some reason I really like the job safety PSAs. The ones where they say stuff like "In 5 minutes my wife is going to get a call that there's been an accident" then they blow up, or fall off a skyscraper that's under construction, or something like that.

Oh my god, when I was coming up they used to show them, especially the pot ones, in the middle of the night, about the time the munchies kicked in. Half of them were about the food metaphor. They didn't make you scared of pot, they made you really, really want fried eggs.
Very small children even thought they were hilarious.
Now I really want to see them react to the PSAs today. The ones where they have victims of drunk driving or people who got cancer from smoking speak. Or the last text commercials.

I've never actually seen the "This is your brain on drugs" PSA before, though I've heard it referenced innumerable times. I mostly remember anti-smoking adds. There were a couple that aired on Nick featuring a girl/guy who saw a hot guy/girl, made eye contact, headed over to make an introduction, then the guy/girl pulled out a cigarette and the girl/guy made a face as the guy/girl turned into a chimp/fish. If that makes sense.

I love the Pee Wee Herman part. That was hilarious. And the sad part about it is I remember that damn commercial. I'm 41 yrs old and God just to look at that clip is hilarious. I remember the other ones too. God time goes by to fast.

The ads got a lot better when they realized what actually motivated kids and gave up on weird metaphors that fell flat. Telling kids not to do stuff just makes them want it, telling them it will mess up their skin works. The truth ads are pretty good now.
The smoking commercials now a-days are pretty good though. Very creative.

The 70's, 80's and 90's PSA's for drugs were hilarious because they were created to appeal to kids rather than scare them. Today they go for disgust and shock value because those PSA's are more effective at keeping people away from drugs and cigarettes

As an American in high school I know some people who have been doing drugs since they were 12. Drugs are definitely a problem here
