- "Restoring a Forgotten Gem: Matchbox Electric Trolley Bus"
This shabby little red electric trolley bus had been overlooked countless times during my search for a new restoration project. Honestly, it didn’t catch my eye-I’ve seen and worked on plenty of bus-related models, and this one didn’t seem all that special. But pressed for time, I decided it might make for a quick and simple project.
Little did I know, as I dug into the restoration, this unassuming toy began to reveal its charm. I discovered not only the model's unique details but also the fascinating history behind these machines. By the time I was finished, I realized how much I had grown to appreciate it.
Now, this quirky little trolley bus stands out as one of the cutest and most endearing models in my collection. Its charm, beauty, and distinctive character make it an absolute treasure. I’m so glad I took the time to bring it back to life! Marty.

Ha! My OXO cube box design. Marty - what a coincidence! So pleased. Lovely bus, of course.
YeeeeeHawwwwww! I just got home from work, sitting back with a large Vanilla Milkshake, on this very VERY warm evening here, and now I have a MMM video to enjoy, along with my milkshake!
Wow, a shout-out from Marty to You.😮
Haha I just got to the employee lot at work for a quick MMM before going in!
@@allanadam4553 Last Q: Marty the best beer sit n drink you ever had?
Lucky!! I wanna shake!!
Lovely model, looks so great?
And never in a million years did I think I would see Vegeta in an Aussie kitchen cabinet.
Marty, you have NO idea how glad I am that you're back on track. I like your Videos to calm down from the day. you make me so "happy with that"! :D greetings from Germany!
My grandpa, mum’s dad, used to be a trolley bus conductor. As well as selling tickets, he also had to hop off at the intersections to disengage the pantograph from one powered line, and engage it with the next one.
Great restoration on the trolley bus, Marty , you've done a great job , just don't let Kevin try connect to the power lines, you know it will end in disaster 🚎⚡️💥😳
Yeah. Look what he did with the crane
Good tot see that the electricity is repared after Kevin tried tot move the crane.😂😂😂
I had one as a kid, and always found it dull. Since it was a hand me down, I never saw it with decals. What a difference!! It really pops!!
In my youth I travelled on the local trolley buses. If the road bent sharply left or right, the cables would off the wires. The trolley would come to a standstill and the driver would get out and pull out from under the bus a huge length of wood with a hook at the end. The hook would manouvre the cables back on to the wires and then we would continue on the journey.
Hi Marty, trolley buses were always flat fronted without a grille. They also carried a long bamboo pole in what looked like an exhaust pipe. This pole was for hooking the electric connectors back to the electric lines. They frequently came off when turning a corner. The driver would get out and get the pole and, reconnect to the electric lines.
I found your channel in 2020 and love to see your work! I also love reading your newspaper headlines! 😂
Marty, Here in the old U S of A we have a cleaning product by the name of SOS pads. They are steel wool impregnated with soap. If you can find such an animal in your neck of the woods it would clean off that rust and corrosion in the flick of a lambs tail. Your job in making a plain-jane London tram pop must make a ex-Londoner misty eyed with nostalgia. 🤠🚞
Marty, you have NO idea how glad I am that you're back. Cheers from Canada, mate!
I enjoy zooming in on the newspaper 📰 and reading some of the articles. 😊 10:35
Hi Marty, I must admit this is a Matchbox model I was not aware of, Thank you for the information on this model and a very nice restore. Also that is why I never let my decals soak in the water. I prefer to get them wet and then place them on a hard surface, usually my cutting mat. Then just wait a few minutes for the decal to separate from the backing paper and apply the decal to the model. Glad to see you back making Matchbox restore videos, I've enjoyed all of your restore videos and look forward to your next video. Cheers, Rich S.
be a bit smokey today from the fires in the Grampians & the little desert fires that are going today certainly is up here at Minyip!
Hi Glenn, I'm just down the road in Wal Wal!
Hi Marty, this video took me back down memory lane. Trolleys use to run along the Edgware Road through Burnt Oak where I lived. They were dismantled at Colindale bus depot & were a great source of entertainment for us young lads. I loved that Peardrax drink! Also OXO cubes were packed in tins approximately 6”x 4” x 3” & my dad stored all his nails, screws & miscellaneous hardware in them! Dad was very organised with everything in its place. Yours is a great channel, many thanks😊
Thanks for your support, I'm so glad that I help people remember the goodtimes they had a kids.
Loved your diversion into the world of OXO! Check out the history of the OXO building on the Thames in London, fascinating!
Just turned 6.30pm here in the good old UK. Just about to have my tea and watch Marty rescue a bus.
Thank you Marty.
I love this model. I got mine in 1959 or 1960. I got it from my dad's cousin who married an Englishman and regularly brought me some Matchbox models from England when I was a kid. Mine has black electric poles and crimped axles. I believe that the wheels are made of metal.
Your videos are great entertainment.
Btw, I guess that Kevin has not yet passed his electric vehicles driving license...
Greetings from Canada, Marty! Metallurgy 101. To differentiate between metal and non-metal, touch the item to your cheek or lip. Metal feels cold to the touch. Cheers!
Thanks for the tip, I'll try that next time!
What a neat little model! I’ve seen OXO cubes here in the US, but I don’t recall using them. What I do have is OXO silicone tongs which I use with non-stick cookware. FWIW, there’s a chain of convenience stores in Mexico called OXXO. Think 7-Eleven or similar.
Another fantastic restoration Marty, the bus looks amazing ❤.
Great job, Marty!
I've never seen this casting before, or heard of Peardrax - but I have found a supplier in London so I'm going to try and get some!
Wonderful restoration, and a fine result. Painting the Pantograph on top of the bus black looks so much better than in the bodycolor. Greetings from Germany to Down Under.
I remember Peardrax from when I was a kid, it was probably my all time favourite drink and I was gutted when they stopped making it over here, I'd love to get hold of it again
Peardrax was a UK product - You also had Cydrax. Cydrax was an alcohol free cider from the 60's and used to come in a big brown glass bottle with a stone stopper - And Peardrax was a similar drink made out of Pears. Very delicious, the taste of my childhood. [edit - OK I watched video to the end]
I gota tell ya I'm impressed with the model but the 9 month old ninja is pretty impressive also. You do a great job with paint booth headlines. I never miss the top stories.
Hi Marty, nice save on that decal. Hey, you love it when you get viewer suggestions for paint removal, right? 😜 I was thinking of a couple of things and thought I'd run them by you. Have you ever tried media blasting? you can get a kit fairly cheap these days. Then there's washing soda. I use this one myself for various removal jobs. If you stir a couple of big spoonfuls of washing soda (sodium carbonate) into some nearly boiling water with a little soap, you get a good stain remover / mild paint remover. Just drop whatever you're cleaning into the mix while hot and leave it until it's cold, or for a couple of days - whichever serves.
Great model Marty.
My dad would buy a bottle of Peardrax ( or Cidrax) for us kids to go with Sunday dinner, my brother got the job of pouring 3 glasses and my sister and I would get to choose which glass we got before him which ensured he made sure they were all equal 😆🇨🇦
Cute cat, cute trolly, and real nice restore job!
Great as always Marty, and a big MEOW! to Smudge (14:00).
Miaow* (its an Aussie cat, so uses English spelling not American) :)
Great job, as always. Nice to have you back.
My routine for delicate decals: I use a little saucer, putting just a small amount of water into the indentation in the middle. Then I dip the decal into the water just for a second or two. After that I lay it down on the dry edge area of the saucer, just letting it soak through. This ensures that the decal can't swim off the paper so you can slide it onto the model how you showed it with the destination signs.
Great tip!
@@MartysMatchboxMakeovers I was just learning from bad experience... 🙂 The dipping and soaking time depends on the decal paper. It must be wet enough to soak the paper completely and if the decal fully loosens then you go. Too soon and the decal may rip, so be patient...
That turned out very nice indeed! The decals do make all the difference, as you said. Fortunately, Kevin didn't get a chance to wreak havoc with it after you finished the restoration 😆
I had your decal problem with the decals separating in the water. I now dip the decal in the water then place it on the worktop. It slows the soak and doesn't float off.
Sadly, I'm old enough to remember trolley buses.
I had to rob my spares box for some models zi got last week very very cheap off Ebay. Say Hi to the cat from me, and will Julie know you borrowed her toothbrush? Use Kevin’s lol. Glad you are back mate, we missed your makeovers, as so many have stopped doing your videos.
Awesome job Marty!!!!
Hi Marty. I live in central London and although I am not old enough to have seen the trolley buses in working action I have seen one when I was a kid at the London Transport museum when it was in Clapham. I was a kid at the time but I do remember it because it had six wheels. I have seen all of the London bus types since the early 70's so its nice to see an old one in Australia. Those figures look like they are figuring out how to squeeze into the bus. Nice video. Regards.
I part own two full size trolleybuses, Wonderful machines.
Hey Marty....good job...loviing the videos....Cheers Mate.
Hi Marty!
I’ve been watching your videos almost since the very beginning of your UA-cam journey. I love seeing how you transform what seems destined for the trash into little masterpieces. The bus you saved today is a perfect example of that!
However, what really caught my attention today, to the point of writing to you, was the presence of your cat. If I could send you a photo of my own cat, I’m sure you’d have the same reaction as me: How can two cats, one in Australia and one in Canada, look so disturbingly alike?
Hi Marty really enjoy your make overs . Yes I can remember pear deax in a can & bottle . Had a fizzy carbonated sweet pear taste. Do miss it . Keep cool Marty. Winter here in the UK. All the best Brian.
Simple but I think one of your better models. Keep Buildin.
Another top-shelf makeover, Marty. Well done!
G'day again Marty, once more job well done Mate, when I was a Kid back in the UK Mum would boil an OXO Cube and fill a Mug with Diced Bread and then add the hot OXO it was nice on a Freezing Day, we to have had hot weather over here ,a Town up north of here had 49.5 C last week, cheers! Armadale West Aust.
Nice work on the Bus, I think Kevin still Ows you for all that Red Paint He'd wasted accouple videos back.
Beautiful work Marty! I agree that the decals really make the bus more interesting. Thanks for sharing this.
Nice job, Marty! Have you ever used Microsol or Microset on your decals? One helps you have more time to move the decal around, and the other helps the decals flatten and adhere to the model's surface better. They come in bottles, are fairly inexpensive, and last for years. I've been using them forever, and they work well.
I need to do a video showing the evolution (or decline) of Marty's thumbnail over the years 🤣
Great having you back, Marty. Looking forward to watching this in full with a cuppa later.
🤣🤣
Commented the wrong ... Sorry!
Those thumbs have always fascinated me.
Nicely done Marty, that's a lovely little model. Looking forward to your next video. Best wishes. Peter.
A beautiful London trolleybus, I did not know this model yet.
I still have a No 56 type, I found it under the fence of the garden.
Here in the Netherlands it is winter, but that does not mean much anymore, it is more spring.
Great video, Marty. Regarding the rear lights, the outer two are actually reflectors and the two tail lights are above the number plate. (Remember that in the 50s and earlier the lighting regulations were no where near as stringent as they are now.)
Good to know Arthur thankyou for the information, Marty.
Either I have just not seen recent videos or it has been a while since you posted, but glad to see you back. This makes me happy.
Nice model! The face of the bus looks actually pretty cute once it's finished.
Excellent restoration, Marty! And it's so nice to have you back.
Such a small world. I think way back you referenced Basingstoke and Cliddesden Road? I lived on that road...
That was great. I enjoyed that makeover. Nice work as usual.
Awesome bus . Great work.
Very cool 😎
Always a perfect restoration.
Mike
Thank you Marty for all your beautiful videos about restoring matchbox models, which we love forever. As i was a kid, i was so thankful when i received a matchbox model as a gift from my parents or my friends, the best time of my life. Thank you Marty that you remember the best times! Best wishes from Germany Günter
I’m not going to risk attempting to refurbish mine, although it’s in better nick than yours was before you started. One thing I noticed, though, was that mine has the headlamps painted silver. I owned the bus from new so it isn’t an ‘aftermarket’ addition. Brilliant job you’ve done.
Beautiful job as always! Loved the OXO divertimento. 😂
Next time you are here mate, there are s a brilliant trolleybus museum at Carlton Coalville near Lowestoft, and they have an ex London W1 tri axle trolleybus there you can ride on, plus vintage tramd
A cup of oxo on a cold winters day. Yum. Basically beef broth.
Top hole refurb........ with a few nail biting moments to add tension 😁
Perfect 👍🏻👏🏻👌🏻
I used Avery sticky paper so I didn‘t have to buy decals. Turned out very well. A shame I can‘t attach pictures but thanks for all your work, mate.
Cheers from Germany!
I put my name on my tools too. Thanks for another brilliant video Mr Hubgard!
You’re spoiling us again Marty keep them coming 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Always happy to see another MMM video! That "Hub Guard Tool" is a great idea. 😎👍
We here in the American Southeast just had a week of frigidly cold temps, down into the low 20s F. We even had snow here in North Florida for the first time since 1977! I had an outside water pipe freeze and burst, had to pay $625 to a plumber to get it fixed. I hope we go another 48 years til the next snow day. 😮
Thanks for another great video mate. That would have to be the easiest job you ever did. Have a good one 👍🇦🇺
Great job 👍🏻
I agree the decals really make it.
I’m happy too!
I have one of these … it’s in a wee little bit better condition. But not by much…. Another great video Marty!
Nine month old gets his black belt? Impressive. I am lucky if I can find my belt when I get dressed in the morning.
Loved the OXO side track. I used to steal a cube from my mom's cupboard and shave off small pieces to suck on as a kid.
when i was a kid i would get 25 cents a week allowance. i would take my 2 bits and head down to the town hobby shop and buy a matchbox car. you restore the cars i bought as a child. often i'm welled up watching you, recalling those days. thank you for that.
Great to hear i'm having an effect! - I also had a part of my brain re-ignited when I started to take a renewed interest in these cars that I had as a kid! - So many memories returned!
@@MartysMatchboxMakeovers thank you marty.
Nicely restored marty, it's great that you met up with one of your subscribers. Nice oxo cube 👍
Just beautiful, Thanks for sharing your talent and expertise with us!
You're very welcome - Glad you enjoyed it!
That turned out great. I think the OXO cube is shaped like an X to reference the X in OXO.
Great video mate, love these Matchbox models from the late 50's early 60's. Keep up the good work and keep out of the heat!
Looks sharp!
Thanks for sharing 🇨🇦
Terrific job, I just happen to be working on this exact model. Lots of helpful tips. Thank you so much
Thank you Marty for making my monday a truly fun day
Great start to the week. A makeover with my cup of tea. I agree that the bus does look great after the decals and the gloss black trolley arm
Nicely done.
Similar situation to the drink:
The only place you can get Breda, The Royal Dutch Lager original recipe and best in most peoples opion is in the bailiwick of Guernsey. The dutch producers gave Randall's of guernsey the only non dutch company a licence to produce Breda. Then the dutch brewers stopped producing breda, so Guernsey was the only place you could get it. In the last few years, they've started producing Breda in holland again, but to a completely different recipe, dutch people even prefer the Guernsey version because of it being th original, and prefer it in blind taste tests between the two. The funny thing is, there's nothing stopping Breda being produced to the original recipe in Holland
I have that bus, and it needs a makeover, my parents used to ride on the real bus before we came to Canada. thank you for this bit of nostalgia.
So happy to see you back on the hobby bench and making videos. That trolley bus made a fine addition to your collection. Was not sure it was recoverable, but as usual you did your magic and BAAM, there she was in all her MMM beauty .Thank you for posting this one along with all the other make overs you have done.David from Texas ,USA.
lol I just love the “piss off” sign on the wall. 😂
I had this exact model - in the same state! - when I was about 4 years old. I was always told it had been my brother's and handed down to me. But the dates don't add up. He was born in 1946, and would have been 12 when this came out (1958). I can't believe a 12 year old would have played with a Matchbox toy to the extent that it was in such bad condition! I suspect my Mum got it from somewhere/someone else and passed it off! 😂 I'm old enough to have witnessed trolley buses operating in Maidstone, Kent when I was about 6 years old (1967). Think they stopped running the same year. It was fascinating to see the network of overhead cables in a town centre allowing them to operate. Apparently the network extended for up to six miles radiating out from the town centre. Who says EV's are new - at least you didn't have to plug these in for hours to recharge them. Just raise the contact arms to the cable and away you went.
Another fantastic restoration as always 😁
Nice surprise for a Monday morning in the UK. Excellent work
Getting himself back into a grove. Well done as always❤️✌️
Awesome job! ...Great to see you again getting busy!🙃
My favorite Matchbox vehicle of all time and thanks for sharing your restoration of it!
Loved this one as I have about 7 or 8 of them.
nice work Marty,
Hi Marty, once again greetings from Cape Town South Africa. I love your videos after a long day of work. Keep up with the good work and kind regards.
This was one of your less involved models, but doesn't make it an easy one! The decals seem to want to derail you. Really enjoy seeing you work! Happy days from Michigan, USA!!
Another fine job. Lovin' the Oxo box diversion, too.
Thank you for reviving London's transport splendor! Greetings from the troĺley city of Arnhem😊
Fantastic restoration, well done 👏. Really love red scale model buses.
