    Do you think that maybe the plastic coating in the back of the blank is to do what you are doing with the duct tape? To protect the back from scratches when stamping? Just my mind thinking a little. Lol

      Brittaney Hall yes! It’s mainly to protect during the shipping and cutting processes, but it works great to leave it on instead of using the tape. I just show the tape instead in the videos, because not all blanks will come with the pvc coating on the back. :) thanks for the question!

    On the video going out of focus, just a little photography tip (prof photographer here), record a little farther out and you could always edit/crop the video in closer when your done if you want viewers to see up close. Farther out can avoid from the lens to go in and out if focus to find which area to be trying to find the focal point and will cover the whole area

    Thank you! I'm glad you mentioned you are shaky. My hands tend to shake when I get nervous or concentrate to hard, gave me a bit of reassurance that I can do this.

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  4 роки тому +1

      Jessica Renee It makes things tricky, doesn’t it? Just brace your stamp well with your hand. And over time, you won’t feel nervous any more and you just won’t have to concentrate hard because you’ll gain muscle memory. It takes a lot of practice, so it’s important to be okay with your stuff looking like crap for a while. You can use the messed up pieces for more practice, by doing more stamping in the empty spaces.

    I haven't even started metal stamping yet, but I've watched both your videos and a company's videos who use all the name brand metal stamping supplies. But I have to say, Kate, I love the way you use items that are not necessarily brand name and come out with the same results as someone who uses all the big name gadgets with the most popular metal stamping brand. I like to save money so if I can save money, all the better! I tried to get the stubby hammer at Harbor Freight last night but they were out because they are on sale right now. But I found someone on marketplace selling about $110 worth of the name brand stuff for only $30 so I'm picking that up today. So I'm hoping to make my first bracelet this weekend. Thanks!

    • @makeitkate3240

      N I Q O L E I’ve been asked this a few times, but sometimes blanks don’t come with a plastic backing. I removed it to show what happens if your blank doesn’t have that plastic on it. You can leave the plastic on, instead of taping your bench block if you want.

      @@makeitkate3240 I pulled my block out this afternoon and turns out I ended up covering mine with tape when I'd done my stamping a couple years ago. You're the first youtuber I've seen that does it; I just had painter's tape tho, I will def use duct tape now! One thing I did was tape a piece of painter's tape facing up so it would help keep blanks in place. I still used 1 piece at the bottom to help line the stamps up with but the face up piece helps a lot!

    Hi Kate! Thanks for your tutorials.. I love them so much.. I need your advise though. Are you very conscious of materials that tarnish? Do you always buy the high end ones that you use for your projects or give to people?? I'm making for Xmas gifts for my hubby's family and I don't wanna give them something that turns black lol..

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  4 роки тому +1

      I almost always use aluminum. It’s relatively inexpensive, it doesn’t tarnish, and the finished product looks really nice. Aluminum is what I use for gifts, items I’ve sold, donations for auctions, etc. I haven’t personally used sterling or other high end metals. I also sometimes use copper and brass. Those WILL tarnish though, and will turn some people’s skin green.
      Go with aluminum! 😉

    Hi, I'm new to stamping and this video was very helpful in how to set up and use the tools. I just wanted to ask how to stamp on blank connectors for macrame, these connectors are already curved. Do I straighten it, stamp it then use the bending pliers? Thanks

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  4 роки тому +1

      Samantha Winner Hi! I’m not familiar at all with macrame. When I did a search to figure out what those connectors are, it looks to mi like you’re talking about those stainless steel rings? If that’s right, this technique won’t work with that. You’ll need to make sure that you buy stamps that are specifically made for stamping on stainless steel. These tools wouldn’t work for bending and straightening metal that’s so hard, though. And you wouldn’t be able to stamp on something with such a rounded surface - it would need to be a flat surface (like a table top instead of a pool noodle, if that makes sense). My bed suggestions would be to get creative about what you’d be using as a connector, or stamp other items that you could attach TO the connector.

    • @samanthawinner2213
      @samanthawinner2213 4 роки тому

      @@makeitkate3240 Hi there, the connectors aren't rings, they are flat narrow pieces around 1.5" long with holes at each end for the knotting to attach to. They come with a slight curve to sit on the wrist but then obviously I can't stamp onto it. I thought maybe I could flatten, stamp then recurve with the bending pliers. Just a thought. Thanks for your advice though, will be useful for other projects :-)

    Great tutorial! What are the chances that the bracelet blank will scratch and wear with use? Just curious how durable they are in the long term. Also, I've seen a lot of people use the bracelet bending bar versus the pliers. Which is better in your opinion? Or are they both equally effective?

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  4 роки тому

      downtoawhisper The blanks will definitely scratch and show signs of wear. Most metals that you stamp on will do that. Aluminum is one of the softest metals, so it will scuff up faster than maybe brass would. I’d say that both tools are very effective. Neither is very expensive, so it can’t hurt to have both in your toolbox. ;)

    Hi Kate. New to stamping here. Have a question after my first attempt. Does all hand stamped blanks show the stamp coming through on the back side? I stamped a blank with an initial, and it shows on the back side of the blank. Am I doing something wrong, or is the blank possibly too thin a gauge? Using a 2# brass hammer and a steel bench block on a butcher block table. The blank is silver plate brass and looks to be 24 gauge. Thanks.

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  5 років тому

      Hi there! The stamping will almost always show through, but I would say that 24 gauge is way too thin. The problem with a blank that thin, is the metal will also begin to warp and bubble really badly as you stamp. :(

      They have different gauges for stamping blanks. Most should be between 18-22

    Is there a place to get longer blanks? I made some bracelets today, but they are too snug on my wrist for the desired effect.

      Kim Lyne yes, try Jasper’s Supply Shop on Etsy. If you don’t see the longer size listed, send him a message and he’ll cut it for you.

    Can you tell me the brand and name of the letter stamps on the breathe necklace?

      That font is called “fish fingers.” I got those stamps used, so I’m not sure who the manufacturer/brand is. But you can find them online by googling “fish fingers metal stamp font.”

    Do you ever use Q-tips & rubbing alcohol to clean up your blanks? If not, it's there a reason you don't?

      My top favorite is a sharpie oil based paint pen. Second favorite is a plain old sharpie.

      Hi there. I know it’s the worst thing to hear, but there’s no quick fix. You just have to keep practicing.

      Me too for sure. These tools are what I suggest for someone who wants to try stamping without much $$ investment. I talk about tools that are more ideal in other videos.

    What is your bench block sitting on?

    • @makeitkate3240
      @makeitkate3240  5 років тому

      It's a rubber bench block that this particular bench block came with. You can get them at the craft store or on Amazon. They help to deaden the sound and absorb some of the blow from your hammer.

    Helpful video. However the background music was extremely distractingand nerve-wracking.

    Your information rocks, but the music doesn't. You don't need it. In fact, it is an annoyance and gets in the way of understanding what you are saying. Keep in mind that we can't read your lips during the video, which we normally can do if watching any other kind of video. I find the music so annoying and intrusive, that I often don't finish watching videos that use it. Or I turn off the sound and turn on the closed captioning.
