    Again, I see no advantage to trading a 240 for the M10. The 240 produces fantastic images. I have printed jpeg images at 13x19 size with no image editing and the quality is superb. If I had an M8 or M9 I might be tempted to get the M10. Kep up the good reviews. I am looking forward for the next one.

    Honestly between the two, I would think they are the same camera. Difference is the major price! Most people look AT the picture, not pixel peeping the noise of a picture. Thanks for this comparison, that’s very impressive for the 240. I remember shooting 6400 speed film on a film camera and the amount of grain was massive. The 6400 on the M camera already looks leagues better

      Totally agreed. I'm just now seeing this video way after the fact... and I find performance to be essentially identical. As a day shooter only, this video is just permission to save $4000.

    This is a refreshing take on image quality. I have a M240 where I’ve experienced some frustrating challenges with ISO settings above 1600. With night photography in particular, I see ‘worms’ in my RAW files that can’t be corrected in post processing. Naturally I began to consider ‘upgrading’ to an M10. However, your video highlighted a few key points related to lenses. I am using a version 3 50mm Summicron which might be a factor in not being able to successfully photograph at night. Instead of jumping straight towards a camera upgrade, it might be wise for me to experiment with a few modern 50mm lenses first. If my image quality issue is resolved, upgrading my lens would be a more sensible (and less expensive) decision.
    Thank you for your excellent tips!

      I would make the argument that any M rangefinder would make you a better photographer if you're moving from an SL or Q. rangefinder experience is completely different and will change the way you approach any subject you want to photograph.

    Got my M240 for about 6 months now. Still under learning how to get an accurate focusing, as I was only using af focusing system during last 10 years. As I can see that the image is great if I had the accurate focus with my M240. This is a camera which let you enjoy shooting.

    Thanks for the great analysis. After looking at a ton of photographs, I too came to the conclusion that the difference was in the lenses and not in the different bodies. I have owned the M240 for a while now and will be keeping it (as well as my money) for a while. If I buy anything, it would be better lenses, as that's what makes the difference most of the time.

  • @ThorDyrden

    As I understand the "two stop advantage" statement of some reviewers - they probably refer to noise-level.
    So the test should be:
    - keep the aperture the same (so also dof is constant)
    - have the 240 at ISO 100 and expose correct (so e.g. with 1/100s)
    - have the M10 set to ISO 400 and expose correct (so in our example then with 1/400s - which is 2 stops less light)
    The resulting images from a noise-level/IQ should be comparable... probably the test should also be done for ISO 400 vs. 1600 and 800 vs. 3200 to see a difference - I assume ISO 400 is no challange for any of the modern sensors.

    • @ThorDyrden
      @ThorDyrden 7 років тому +2

      OK - should have watched to 10:09, before commenting. Agree, that the noise-advantage at least is a combination of sensor and image-processing (if not processing only)... still at high ISOs a better sensor should also deliver more conrast and dynamic-range, which is hard to regain in processing... though also hard to compare.

    A very fair and logical review. Thank You. I don't use Leica gear as tools. They are toys to enjoy. Definitely don't need them. My tools are the good old Nikon gear - they provide me with an income stream to buy the toys I desired. Top of my "toy" wish list is the Hasselblad 907x so I can use it with my 503x and old CF lenses. Leica is a master in marketing "Special Edition" cameras; people are happy to pay more to buy them. The key is exclusivity and nothing to do with taking better photos. I usually buy my Leica gear from many of my "Leica Collector" friends who buy Leica to keep and not to take photos. Hence, I ended up with "Special Edition" Leica bodies not by choice but they are the only stocks my friends had. For those who want to take photos with Leica gear, we should encourage the Leica collectors to buy the latest with their deep pockets. Don't forget they are the providers of the secondary market.

    Like you stated, whether you like a particular camera or lens is very subjective. I just received my new M10, having upgraded from the M9. I feel that the images from the M10 are definitely sharper over those from the M9. Maybe it's due to the higher pixel count from the M10? Colour is definitely different, not sure how to define it. I love the newer options that the M10 has over the M9, like peak focussing, which is a definite benefit over the M9. Also the "extra stops" available in low light. EVF and LV both are a benefit over the M9. All of these features make it a winner for me. The LCD screen is larger, the optical viewfinder and the frame lines are brighter, M10 has gps/wifi with the EVF, the buffer speed is faster for the M10.
    Now if I had owned the M240, it may not make sense to upgrade. I actually looked at the M240 before I bought the M10, and I did not like the feel of holding the camera in my hands, even as much as the M9. It's too bulky for me. I also am not interested in the video feature of the M240. I could have bought the M262, or the M-D, but the M10 has features that I liked that the previous series of models did not have. Still, the M9 is still a great camera too, and I will keep it as a back up.

    I think you raise a great point. Seems like gear acquisition syndrome (GAS) is quite common these days. Just because a new camera comes out doesn't mean that your "old" camera will stop taking pictures! I think that's a point that goes beyond just cameras and can apply to most modern technology that we use every day (do we really need a new iPhone every year?) Thanks as always for a great video.

    • @LeicaReview
      @LeicaReview  7 років тому

      Thank you for recognising and pointing out "GAS" Gear Acquisition Syndrome that has been a driving factor in today's consumption society. Pros used to use a lens or a camera for years even decades. Now, lens companies are driven to deliver more products and entice consumers to purchase them.

    Hello. I think this is my first comment on your channel. First just to make it clear, I'm not a professional photographer. I just enjoy photography and I know my way a bit with cameras. I still have an Olympus OM4-T camera with some lenses I purchased in 1986. I've owned a couple of film cameras and my first digital camera was the Canon EOS 7d 1st generation. I currently own a Sony A77m2 with a couple of lenses and I enjoy it.
    I've read lots of reviews on the Leica cameras on UA-cam and as always: many love them; others don't. Personally, I've never held a Leica camera in my hands. But what I've heard from many is that they a well built and have lasting value. Many professionals swear by them, other folks think they are pretentious; that you'd have to be crazy to buy a camera that can easily set you back around 12 thousand dollars.
    In my view a camera is just a tool and the computer inside it is a moron. It's the photographer's brain that will produce the magic by telling the camera what to do.
    True: camera technology these days is wonderful, and the things you can do with todays technology is outstanding. Instant gratification as one might say as opposed to the days of film which obligated you to wait for the results. But no matter how great sensors have become, good photographic tecnique should always prevail. Even more now that these sensors can offer you so much flexibility. Who ever thought of ISO's going into the millions!
    Personally I feel you should purchase what makes you feel good and if it falls in your budget. But then again, this is my humble opinion. I could be wrong.

    • @LeicaReview
      @LeicaReview  7 років тому +1

      Thank You Jose.. You have highlighted something very important. Everyone should purchase a camera that falls within their budget and that t's the photographer's brain that will produce the magic by telling the camera what to do. Much appreciate your comments.

    I like your philosophy about over consumption and that most modern day cameras lack character. I agree and have a Leica M240 for that special quality in a digital camera. I found your comparison between the 240 and the M10 too general though. The main difference in the 2 stop advantage will be in low light, but you shot in full sunlight so we can't see any noise. Its a bit silly then saying they are 'identical'! I can even see during daylight that the M240 has warmer reds and the M10 is a tad cooler in its highlights. A bit more accuracy in your review would help us! Thanks,

    Fantastic review and the best advice. Ozyilmaz, there is no difference as far as the human eye can see. Yes photographs have character, yet people today spend hours and hours editing. M (type 240) will produce images the same as the M10. It is produces better monochromatic images as the colour contrast filters are in the settings
    I also have an M10P the super quiet shutter and the touch screen and wifi Bluetooth conductivity.
    This features help with day to day assignments. I used both the M(240) and M10P when the job calls for it. Great video!

    Maybe this is just me being a little bias since ill be purchasing an M240 within the next couple of weeks but to me the greater half of images shown look better coming from the M240 over the m10. With that said if money wasn't the deciding factor i would buy the M10 over the m240 as I'm sure most if not all would. The re-design of the digital Leica is the definition of beautiful. The M10 is pure beauty, the new iso dial tho such a minor cosmetic change has made waves, and a big splash! The m240 is a fantastic camera and since so its very hard to make major improvements on an already amazing platform. Higher Iso capabilities and iso dial. Image quality is fantastic, was fantastic and will always be fantastic for years to come.

  • @ebreckpo6563

    Sensor technology hasn't changed much in the last years. I would say an evolution not revolution. The processing algorithms in the camera is getting better and the processing software is getting more powerful.
    I purchased last year a used Leica M-P (typ240) and I am very happy with it. Combined with good optics this camera is capable of taking excellent photographs even in challenging lighting conditions.
    Recently I got the opportunity to purchase an M9 body with a recent sensor replacement (serviced jan 2017 by Leitz). Although a different sensor technology I was very surprised with the quality of the files in good lighting conditions. At base ISO I cannot see much difference between M9 and M240 files. In adverse lighting conditions the M240 has an advantage.
    The M10 (although I haven't used it yet) will probably shoot decent pictures at iso6400 as the m240 shoots decent pictures at iso 3200. The M9 can go up to only iso 1250-1600. We gain 2 stops of sensitivity in 8 years...
    Unless a new sensor technology comes up we are at the limit of the current (CMOS) technology.
    Perhaps in a near future we will be able to shoot a sporting event lit by moonlight....
    Meanwhile instead of moving to the M10 now I am more inclined to purchase some nice glass and going out taking photographs with the equipment I have.
    Thank you for this comparative review and looking forward to your next review.

      I played with the M10 at the local Leica store and asked everyone there what was new about the new sensor. Everyone said that it was a bit better at low light, but no one could tell me anything else besides that. Nothing. Leica won't say either, or who makes it, or whatever. As a buyer, is that not enough to give someone some pause with their money?

    • @ebreckpo6563
      @ebreckpo6563 7 років тому

      Leica M8 and M9 sensor are Kodak CCD sensors, Leica M(240) is a CMOS sensor from Cmosis a Belgan company from Antwerp. The M10 sensor is apparently a sensor from an Israelian company with some links to Panasonic... The processing is done by the Maestro (II) processor. Looked recently at a Thorsten Von Overgaard video about the M10. He was not euphoric about it. He liked the external iso dial. He will take the M10 to Cuba and Mexico and make it work. The best thing is to find an opportunity to test the camera and look for yourself.

  • @ronitsingh85
    @ronitsingh85 7 років тому +3

    Leica have stressed that noise performance is better, we should all know that this is in low light conditions where the sensor is more sensitive and will bring out details and highlights for things that are underexposed say for example in high contrast situations. Also in low light conditions you should be able to bump up the ISO up more, more than the 240 and still get cleaner images without much grain. I am certain after the many yrs sensors have improved, extraction of information from the sensor, algorithm and that that good stuff, We are always advancing in technology, its not surprising that the M10 should not have these, look at Sony, they are able to offer such leaps in sensor tech at almost the same cost, that it becomes irrelevant to think - 'its too good to be true', If it were me, I would go for the M10, simply because its more of a truer M camera, I love the slim shape and the ISO dial. I am glad that space is used. Pricewise and longer battery life makes the 240 more attractive. But don't think the M10 has the same performance as the 240, you will get same results with an iPhone even in good daylight condition.

      Alain Badan I own the M10-P now and don’t plan to get the M10-R, since I already have the M10, 24 MP is still good and has good enough detail but for sure 24 MP does not do justice to the amazing lens resolution of the M line of lenses. I think 36+ MP will bring out majority of the details M lenses are able to resolve when you zoom into the images. For someone shooting up close and at fully open, you will not have much detail anyway! Most of it will be blurred out background, for someone shooting landscape and street, you may need more MP :-)

      @@ronitsingh85 I go in your direction, I have the Sony 7R4 with the 135 1.8 GM and the 24 1.4 GM, it's incredible what a high definition sensor can give as a result with a good lens. With digital camera we now know how sharp these vintage lenses really are. In the time of film you really don’t see much detail that these lenses were capable of producing.
      Leica does an amazing job at producing those images, I will say that all their line up of point and shoot even produces some of the best images I have ever seen. My first Leica was the Leica T. I was blown by it’s image quality and low light performance. It’s 16mp for a reason, this ensues that at that time it had the low light performance of a full frame sensor. Very pleasing grainy images in low light. Leica Q is a great camera, I love its looks and if you are fine using the 28 lens than you have a bargin right there! Even at full retail price it’s considered a steal if you compare it to buying just a Leica m 28 mm lens. One thing with M bodies is that it uses less power if you are not using live view or EVF. With other mirrorless the sensor is always sampling and relying live view consuming quite a bit of power. I also have the Leica M edition 60, body has no screen at the back, I love using it! Even better battery life

    Fantastic review, streight point of view, totally agree about consumption criticism.
    However, do you think that is worth buying M240 in 2019? I am asking that because this camera is many years old now which means that is impossible to find it used with low shutter count. Is it worth spending around 2.500 dollars for camera that can suddenly stop working and we all know that repairing Leica can cost hell of a lot.

    Great video, especially the last part in my honest opinion... I would like to add... There is too much competition, and everything has to be a competition nowadays... Everywhere... People are obsessed with competition so people keep buying the latest gear, so they can keep up with "their" competition.

    Image quality in my case is not main reason to upgrade. The new viewfinder (I wear glasses) and the wifi is an step ahead. I do not de the point of the iso will is faster to change iso in my mp240. I do not like my camera's thickness . It does not look like a leica camera. I can afford it and soon I will move to an m10 in silver not in black as I have today. Im bores of street photography so I do not need to worried about been invisible ;)

    12:20,13:45 - Hard to beat IBIS (EG: Olympus) for the value it provides, and a low noise Sensor for the Image quality. Anything that can be fixed in Post will be, by people not making money from their time.
    When Time=Money neither is wasted by paying the money, even for a small increment. Professionals who do Post cost both while proper Equipment and Technique in the first place saves all the way down the line.
    Professionals can afford a matching Set of Lenses that cost as much as a House. Amateurs are usually stuck with a hodgepodge of differing Glass that makes Videos that look like a Frat House Production (and not at a Film School).
    I'm not too much a Fan of the Secret Sauce some Cameras of years past had as they'd crush the Blacks but more recently it's come a long way.
    It's because of improvements to the Sensor, propped up by IBIS that we've gained several Stops (not all Aperture, split with Shutter Speed) with some IBIS/Lens IS Combos generating more than 5 Stops (of Shutter vs. Blur).
    Sadly, Glass has always been expensive (save for the mass produced popular sizes) and is cheaper to correct in Post as it holds it's character (in Primes).
    Straight lines are nice but the character of a Lens is difficult if not impossible to fix (match) in Post; it is for that reason the cost should be born.
    Really enjoy your Videos,
    Rob

    Hi Oz, if there is no difference in Colors & IQ as seen from some of the images at Base-ISO, between M-Typ240 & M10, except Software (High-ISO) improvement, then, it means we are buying M10 for its lighter weight, form-factor (slimmer or thinner body), & ISO Dial, which could be acceptable for some people, and unacceptable for others (won't even count the lack of video as i am not a video guy). In case of two images of the Bridge, i am seeing no difference, but in images of the Harbor, there seems to be a difference of either color or brightness or contrast, but you said there's no difference (of tonality/gradations). Though I am not sure as i am not good at Chromatology (color science) and so would like to know from you Oz. Also if you could say whether M10 is a good buy for a first time Leica prospective buyer ? Plus, what lens to choose is a difficult proposition. Noctilux & 35 FLE blocks the VF. Hence small lenses like 35 Cron, and 50 Zeiss C Sonnar f/1.5 and 28 Elmarit would be better suited.
    Another issue is that even if we want to buy M10, there would be a waiting period of at least 6 months due to high demand. I am a Canon 6D + 24-70 user.
    Thanks, Regards.

      Hello Chirag, thank you for your comments. Firstly, images may vary because light changes from moment to moment. But I wanted to shoot it in practical circumstances rather than controlled lighting situations in a studio. The point of the video is to show that there are no significant differences in image quality in decent lighting conditions. To answer your question, if you have no concerns about budget Leica M10 is a camera to buy whether you are a first time prospective buyer or not. I prefer to use a CCD sensor although the ISO performance is not as great as CMOS sensors because they render a unique quality in images that can't be duplicated with newer sensors. If CMOS sensors are the choice then I would go with Leica M240. I would buy Sony A9 (you can watch my review on Camera Review) because it is the next step in ISO performance technology, plus you can use Leica lenses on them.

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 7 років тому +1

      Thanks a great deal for the ultra-helpful answer that clarifies a lot of things for me now moving forwards. Yes i will watch closely the Sony A9 that was just announced. My all time dream camera would be Leica M9-P White Limited Edition (CCD, 50 pieces), 2nd would be M8.2 (white limited edition), and lastly, Panda Edition M-P (white limited of 60 pieces), but that are sold out, and in any case way too expensive for my pockets. I would see if budget permits me to buy M240 or M10 (for film-like smaller body) in the times to come. Leica Glass marries well with Leica body, but would try it on Sony A9 and compare to arrive at a final decision.
      Best Regards.

    I get your main point- it's not about the camera, don't be tempted to upgrade for a small improvement...invest in lens over bodies... But you seek to demonstrate it in a disingenuous way. Trying to deceive the viewer is not correct.
    And I love how you imply that Leica is Lying about the all new sensor. That all they did was use the M240 sensor and update the software to reduce low light noise. HA! You can't seriously believe that yourself, I hope! Leica is lying. I love it.

      Where on earth He said it do not have newer sensor o.O He actually said that M10 how lower noise than M240 and emphasized that it's daylight test.
      About software(including firmware) bulk of noise is decreased that way.
      Example of such feature in RED cameras(they now have best sensors and firmware on market)

      Vasilis Velopoulos That lens is one of the best allrounder lenses in the world. I used it also on an M6. I traded this body in for an M10P
      And it feels good, much like working with the M6, ergonomically but now with all the digital advances. Important detail: the M6 is AT ALL TIMES READY TO SHOOT😉💎 I sometimes miss that in the M10P cause after some time it falls 'asleep' and does'nt react pressing the release button. VERY ANNOYING!!

    Ich kann deinem Vergleich nicht folgen!! Wenn du sagst eine Kamera ist ein Werkzeug, kann ist die M10 das weit aus bessere Werkzeug im Vergleich zur M40 oder M246!!1 Als ehemaliger Besitzer Beider Modelle kann ich sagen, dass die M10 in der Bedienung, in der Haptik, in der Menüführung, im Live View Betrieb der 240er und der 246er weit überlegen sind! Viel größerer Sucher, größerer Austrtspupille, fast verzögerungsfreie Ausslösungen im Lifeviewbetrieb!! Übersichtlichere Menüführung! Besserer Autoiso! Bessere Objektiverkennung!! Und ganz eindeutig bessere Dynamik oberhalb von ISO 1600!!! Ich habe mich sowohl von der M240 als auch von der M 246 zu Gunsten der M10 getrennt! Ich fotografiere mit ihr nun schon fast 3 Monate und kann nur sagen, dass es noch nie zuvor eine bessere M gegeben hat als die M10!!! Liebe Grüße, Florian

      Leica 18-56 is a very slow lens.. Very impractical for today's day and age. It can only be used during day light or when the lighting conditions are good. Plus, you will be sacrificing the bokeh which makes the photographs no different than Iphone shots.
