Lee Chang-dong really is the goat. I remember him talking about making a Samurai film in Japan (during Poetry's press run). I hope he ends up directing something like that one day. It would be cool to see a period piece through his eyes.
Hmm, a samurai film would be quite different from anything he's done, but it's certainly something to look forward to. As someone who knows very little about South Korean history and culture but is obsessed with Peppermint Candy, probably the closest Lee has come to a period film, I have derived great satisfaction from trying to identify the songs sung throughout the film. I think they help make those pre-1999 sections more atmospheric.

Ppl tend to blame market and capitalism so easily without knowing how they operate. Market is the portrait of people, and the participants. It is an absence of self-blaming in the era of distributed, segregated, and unconsciously shared small pieces of sin. We may be just unconscious about holding them.
