This old video came up on my feed, and anyone interested who doesn't already should watch Kurtis at Cutting Edge Engineering Australia, whose first weekly video was posted a few months after this one. He rebuilds heavy equipment hydraulic cylinders, among many other things. They are welded just like the pipsqueak in this video, and are routinely repaired. He marks gland alignment using a unique pattern, and always measures the length with a tape. When rewelding on a rotating stand, he uses a rotary spring loaded ground connection welded to the workpiece. There's a video on how to make that.

At 24:40, I was like, "WTF?!? everything just went 90 degrees out of phase!" But then I watched a little longer and realized that I'm not the only one who sometimes trusts my memory more than my documentation. That's one of the things I like about you - you don't try to hide the fact that no matter how good you are at what you do, you're not immune to brain farts. It provides aid and comfort to the rest of us that are pretty damn good at what we do, too, and still make some hellacious brain farts on occasion.
ONLY for those that dont know.....He is holding the cup of the TIG welder over the weld after he is done to keep the gas flowing on the weld as it cools so it will not pull in oxygen . If he didnt do this, the weld could bubble and pop alittle, allowing for pin holes. This is not only a water tight weld, its a pressure tight weld

Funny thing about that "throw away vs. repair" question--I was just watching a video from "The Post-Apocalyptic Inventor" prior to watching yours, and that's something he preaches about all the time. We used to fix things instead of throwing them away and buying replacements. Good on you for sharing the techniques necessary to do so for these hydraulic cylinders. Makes me consider attempting a repair on the crappy old hydraulic jack I've got kicking around my shop that gave up the ghost after 30 years. I'm sure it's the same type of issue.
Thanks Adam, I fixed one too after seeing your video! I’m 74 and had a welding & repair shop back in the 80s. A friend of mine has an old Winabago with these welded cylinders. One was leaking fluid out. I have access to a shop, lathe etc. I told him could try... it’s junk anyway 😄! That was October, he said by April would be nice. Anyway your video came out !!! I was going to feel my way through it like you did, but seeing it done really helped! This one was easier than Fernando’s. After I ground the bracket off I was able to use the 3 jaw and put a bullnose live center in a 1” pipe threaded hole in the end cap. I probably should have been using the steady rest 😬.. I will next time, nothing bad happened, but It could have!!! I replaced the seals; $30 and tiged it back together, no filler on the root and capped it off ok (shaky old guy with a 3.5 lens) My friend was surprised and happy!! He is going to tell his RV service center where these things can be fixed! Oh No! 😬 I figure it would take me 4 or 5 hours like you said. A new one like this was over $1000 plus shipping. I had no problem with heat transfer up the cylinder, just wrapped a wet rag around it.
I thoroughly enjoy watching your videos. I have zero experience or knowledge with what you're doing by find it fascinating to watch and to follow your explanations. You clearly have a talent both as a machinist as well as a teacher!
Nice post. All aspects of the project from diagnosis, disassembly, cleaning and repair including welding! I feel for your step dad Fernando. I own a ‘96 diesel pusher and try to keep up with the maintenance, repairs and dumb engineering from the manufacturer! Throw away parts is what makes the RV shops lots of money especially when the RV is away from home and broke down. They hold you ransom! Great to see others fixing stuff like I do. PRE-buying a whole new set of seals, etc for the rest of the cylinders on an RV??? VERY smart...it's not IF they're gonna fail... When raising our jacks, we heard a gawd-awful screeching sound from the pump area of my Class A a couple years ago and all I could think of was all the metal going thru the entire hydraulic circuit! Turns out, it was just the pump - it's actually an outboard's lift motor and the local marina quoted me $280+shipping+tax +++ . Amazon delivered it to my door in 2-days for $73! Took me about an hour and a half to install (and, I'm slow). Made us Happy Campers (literally!) again! Thanks Adam!

Came across your cylinder repair video thank goodness after searching for one like it forever…. Glad I found it and glad you made it. I was trying to help my neighbor with his motorhome stabilizer jacks and suspected that I had to cut them open… your video confirmed my thoughts and paved the way for what to expect… the cylinders I worked did not have anti rotation. I did stick weld to finish after initial tig root weld on the 1st one… i tig welded fully the rest of them seems i had more control especially bridging the gaps that were left after grinding the plate off. So far it took me 49.5 hrs doing this after hours at work. I did evolve towards the end to working another cylinder between cooling of the welds. The ones i worked on are priced at over 1200$ each 4 total. Love to send ya my pics if you wanna see. Thanks again for the video!!
Robert, I have a similar job to do with a lift cylinder on a lawn tractor. But all I have is a flux core welder. Do you think it's possible to weld it back together with a flux core welder?

@@Abom79 This is how I'm teaching myself to TIG. I shake like a leaf so only having one hand to concentrate on not shaking makes a big difference. Once I get that down I'll work on holding the wire and dipping, etc. I really like the clarity of the welding shots you are getting!
I loved watching the TIG welding. I've done a little stick and wire feed work but never do very well. Having grown up brazing and soldering copper refrigeration pipe, TIG looks like something I could do well.

A very ood repair. I did this this summer on my Winnebago Sightseer RV. Just the front oned. I didn't pull the ram out, just cut off the nose end, replaced the seal & wiper and re-welded it together. Yours was a nice repair and now you are in the RV leveler business!

As an RV repair shop I can tell you first hand that it would be an economical repair....especially in an area such as mine. Cost, exchange and freight make replacement cylinders expensive here. That being said I rarely see the older type like that...generally it the newer small diameter cylinders. Looks like a great job buddy.. :)
I applaud the fact that you repaired it. We throw too much away. People like you inspire me to attempt to repair what I used to send to the landfill. It feels good to fix things. Best wishes for a prosperous and happy 2020.
throwaway parts is whats wrong with RVs. I've owned several and every single one had common issues and it was all due to poor design or workmanship. I have went to the RV place and bought a replacement part that also failed in the same way after one season and still ended up just fixing the ting myself. Personally I would rather fix it myself or have someone I trust to fix it and make it a onetime repair. If you seen the welds that Adam cut out compared to the ones he laid down plus with the seals that I could only imagine are much better quality. I'd take a repaired part over new any day. A filter or camera setup so we could properly view your welding technique would be REALLY nice.. I feel like it could take your videos to an even higher level. Especially if it were both a regular camera recording with a picture-in-picture style of smaller frame with the filtered setup synced up. Just a thought. Because those of us that dont TIG weld would really like to see how you're working the puddle and filler rod.

I swear this makes me wish I was 19 again and working in a hydraulic shop again. But I was not thinking and picked up a jack that was too heavy to be lifted by one person. But seeing this brings a lot of great memories back.
Luckily he has you as a friend to help rebuild that. Being it’s non-serviceable had he taken it to a shop that he would have to pay for the repair, the cost would have been more than it is to just replace it. Sad we live in such a throw away society. Things like that should be repairable. Great video and great work.

Nice job! Looks similar to modern Atlas Hydraulic Jacks except it's missing the top plug. The cylinders value is right around $1000 so it's well worth fixing. RV's are usually just an assembly of third party pieces. - You know allot of people in the RV industry have know idea this is possible.
This guy has balls, I would never have dreamed of cutting that oring seat. I would have left it just where it was. Way too risky for someone like me. This guy is an apex machinist.

Dammed nice work. well done. I rebuilt a hoist cylinder for my dump that was old an raggedy. It was quite a job getting it apart. And found pitting inside. So we filled in the pits with JB weld and put all new seals in it. We had to cut the back off too like you did. It was quite a learning experience. Thanks again!

Piston itself is 90deg offset as to what it was before! :/ Hope that won't matter ( Since it can't spin due to the square rod inside... ) As a former machinist, i love to have found your video's man! Love all the actual hand labour that goes into it as opposed to the CNC stuff of today.
I only have experience with hand crank levelers on a Rv; When I keyed up this video, I imagined that cylinder was off some piece of heavy equipment. Obviously made that way to foster jack sales rather than repairs. Mom is lucky to have a very talented son!
Nice job. It’s not just about economics. Sometimes it’s just better not to throw things out. Your welds look great but your could test them with compressed air and a bit of soapy water on the out side. Even just 20psi is enough. We used to do preliminary test on welded cylinders this way.
Mistakes happen, it just depends upon how they are handled. Being a master craftsman is all about making sure the work is done right, it doesn't mean you are perfect.

piston hole is 90 degrees off but might still work, I don't know if the RV uses feet on the ends of the piston or not. Maybe the feet could just be rotated?
You can't put a price on family. Ain't none of my business, but it doesn't seem like you've got family banging down your door asking favors all the time either. I just enjoyed watching your chill welding technique, laying that filler rod down along that seam and walking that torch over it like a cake decorator lays an "e" border.

Take your time with it. You don't have anything to lose and a repaired jack and knowledge to be gained.

I thought his ground was some sort of heat sink at first to control the welding heat dissipation. I need to find some copper like that.

It's fine, the hole is only there to fix the "foot" to the rod.

Center punch and put a couple indexing dots... saves a lot of time and mistakes. Nice welds!!!! Oh and THANK YOU for not a bunch of crappy music with it!!! By the way, it's part TWO, SNS 285 was part 1 :D

Nice job! Looks similar to modern Atlas Hydraulic Jacks except it's missing the top plug. The cylinders value is right around $1000 so it's well worth fixing. RV's are usually just an assembly of third party pieces.

Very nice welding. Even my FIL who was a welder in the '60's and welded some of the fuel tanks for NASA said it would do.

Dammed nice work. well done. I rebuilt a hoist cylinder for my dump that was old an raggedy. It was quite a job getting it apart. And found pitting inside. So we filled in the pits with JB weld and put all new seals in it. We had to cut the back off too like you did. It was quite a learning experience. Thanks again!

Piston itself is 90deg offset as to what it was before! :/ Hope that won't matter ( Since it can't spin due to the square rod inside... )

I only have experience with hand crank levelers on a Rv; When I keyed up this video, I imagined that cylinder was off some piece of heavy equipment. Obviously made that way to foster jack sales rather than repairs. Mom is lucky to have a very talented son!

It’s not just about economics. Sometimes it’s just better not to throw things out.
Your welds look great but your could test them with compressed air and a bit of soapy water on the out side.
Even just 20psi is enough. We used to do preliminary test on welded cylinders this way.
That bag of fresh seals brought a smile to my face.

Mistakes happen, it just depends upon how they are handled.
Being a master craftsman is all about making sure the work is done right, it doesn't mean you are perfect.
That camera while welding was pretty cool. I’m impressed the camera didn’t freak out with the sudden flash of light
it is amazing how much weight they expect the welds holding the cylinder to the bracket to hold.
Looks like this cylinder will easily brake holder if on full power

piston hole is 90 degrees off but might still work, I don't know if the RV uses feet on the ends of the piston or not. Maybe the feet could just be rotated?
You can't put a price on family. Ain't none of my business, but it doesn't seem like you've got family banging down your door asking favors all the time either. I just enjoyed watching your chill welding technique, laying that filler rod down along that seam and walking that torch over it like a cake decorator lays an "e" border.
