  • UGA was the first to play Choker, aka Dies Iraes , this tune over a decade ago. Many schools try to imitate, but UGA marching band has made it their own. Usually played on 3rd down, you can now hear this tune when the opponent is in the 20 yard line or during big games this is becoming their signature tune.

Dies irae is Latin for “Day Of Wrath” 😮 it’s definitely the hardest song in the country. Sends chills down my spine

Duck fan here, by far this 3rd down song is what I'm most jealous of. Just absolutely sinister.

When you’re the visiting team and hear this on every third down. You start getting goosebumps

0:18 I love when the band gets to drag the fanfare out and the baritones/sousaphones get to play the extended part. It adds a sense of drama and intensity to the upcoming play.

We first played that in ~2000 (+/- a year). The Imperial March is a relatively recent addition.

Yes, 2000 was the first time I heard it, 10=07-2000 against Tennessee to be exact. When I first heard it, I was like they are playing that song from Sleeping With The Enemy.

The Imperial March came about in 2017, when some of the members of those sections starting doing it as a joke, not sanctioned. Then in 2018 the directors decided they liked it so we kept it, been that way ever since when we played longer Choker.

The best part is how they’re able to hold the last note until the ref starts the game clock. Seems like it was a good 40 seconds this past weekend against South Carolina

Yes, they used Dies Iraes in The
Shining and Sleeping with the Enemy. Probably more movies as well.

The Dies Irae melody is used in tons of horror stuff and yes they added a bit of Imperial March at the end

Well it predates both of those by quite a lot actually. Dies Irae is a Latin hymn dating back to at LEAST the 13th century or likely even earlier. It was really further popularized by Giussepe Verdi in his Manzoni Requiem. Since then, it has been used countless times in Movies and songs to reference death. Nightmare Before Christmas, The Lion King, Home Alone, The Lord of the Rings, The Shining, and many other films have utilized it. I don't think it's in Imperial March, but the band added some at the end lol. Also worth mentioning that Star Wars actually does have a brief usage of Dies Irae though when Luke's uncle and aunt died in The New Hope.
