Stelvio is insane, every bit of its reputation is well deserved. I did it in august while touring with panniers, on my birthday! It got to 35⁰ but if you get out of Prato before noon, you'll gain altitude as the heat build so it balances out, and there are plenty of water fountains to fill bottles all the way up. I didnt mind the traffic, the gradient and hairpins keep all the cars pretty slow so it felt ok. I descended to Bormio, and i didnt enjoy that because there are so many single lane tunnels so you have to stop and queue at the red lights. Definitely a bucket list climb.
Impressive. A real accomplishment. Fitness is easy. Plan and then set your goal. Work until you achieve it. Plus, never compromise on equipment. People thinks it’s outrageous to spend thousands on a bike but I’d rather spend it on a bike that keeps me fit then something that doesn’t. Very dramatic and risky ride. Views were tremendous. I couldn’t do it. Thank you for another excellent ride chronicle.
Thank you very much for your nice comment and thoughts! It was a special ride for me since I had heard so much about it beforehand. This constant gradient is in my opinion, what makes it hard… there are no “flat” sections in between in which you can catch your breath. The only option is to take a break. A light weight bike helps for sure getting up there 😀
I was there in 2018 with my motorbike. But this year I am going to try this with my bulls harrier. We will stay at Franzenshöhe. First we will ride down and than it will go up again...wish you all the best.
thank you for the video, going for a bikepacking trip up to Stelvio from Prato in just one week's time :) what's your lowest gear btw? and what time you went? road seems a bit busy
Sounds like a good plan :) Regarding the gear: I have a 50-34 in the front and 11-30 cassette in the back. I started around 9am on August 15th - it was a Monday, but it was a holiday in Italy, Switzerland, Austria. I think this is why it was a bit busy. If you go in one week, you will be there for Stelvio Bike Day (Sept 3rd): www.parconazionale-stelvio.it/en/experiences/cycling-and-mountain-biking/stelvio-bike-day.html So then it will be very busy - with cyclists only 😉
the Stelvio is amazing! …but it is NOT the second longest pass in the Alps - it is the second highest (after Iseran); there are some longer passes (in fact much longer…), but they are not as high
…and thank God it’s not constantly between 9 and 11 % - that would be horrible… there are a few passages of 11 %, but mostly it’s between 7 and 8 %, averaging at 7.5 % for the 25 km
We did not rent the bikes. We could bring our own bikes (we had a trailer for it on the car). Unfortunately, I don’t know if there are bike rentals close-by.
I'm gonna put Stelvio Pass in my bucket list too. Can't wait for your new video.
Excellent video. I dream of climbing Stelvio in 2024. This is one of my goals. Greetings from Poland 😀
Thank you!! 😊 you have a good plan to climb Stelvio. I hope it works out for you this year 😀

super nice - until you see what you have to suffer - thank you - let me enjoy on YT ;-)
Dear Zygfryd, thank you 😊 I am glad you enjoyed the video.
meglio farlo in occasione di eventi in cui la strada è chiusa alle auto...o se no, in un giorno infrasettimanale...
Si! Stelvio Bike Day 🚲🚲🚲
