- Rolling Thunder 2 (ローリングサンダー2 Rōringu Sandā Tsū) is a run and gun arcade game developed and released by Namco for the Namco System 2 hardware in 1990. The game is the sequel to 1986's Rolling Thunder, retaining the same gameplay of its predecessor but adding cooperative gameplay for two players and improved graphics.
Unlike the original, which was based in 1968, Rolling Thunder 2 features a more contemporary setting to go along with its more futuristic design, as well as an optionally playable female character. A port for the Mega Drive/Genesis was released in 1991. Both the Mega Drive port and the original arcade game were released for the Wii Virtual Console on December 4, 2007 and October 27, 2009 respectively.
This is an emulated arcade version using M.A.M.E.

Gotta love the video-game logic here (and in the first game) - your character can leap up a story to a platform above them, but somehow can't jump over a stack of two boxes in front of them, lol.

That final boss is the single worst payoff to a video game I have ever seen.
The bad guys remind me of the Spectra henchmen from Battle of The Planets.

Always wondered why the Maskers sound like the vulture enemies from Donkey Kong Country when you shoot them.
The graphics look better than the first one, but the gameplay doesn't look as smooth.
It's a far better experience than the first game, and jumping over bullets is a bit easier than the first game. Environments are also much more varied than the original game.

Interesting to see a lot is borrowed from the TV-Series "V" in the 3rd stage. Both initial synth backing tune (not the melody on top) and also the design of the bad guys and airships.
Yeah the first game has stacked up tyres for cover, which is a lot like V the final battle

I had this game on sega. It was difficult but a fun game. Unfortunately I only got to level 2 on that version. The robot boss kicked my ass every time.

I'd like to longplay review this game, but on my SNES Classic I can't get the cheats going and it will reset you like a console game. Fairly uncommon for an arcade shooter to not let you press on with another credit.
Yeah the game is hard enough on arcade let alone limited credits in the console port. They sure were brutal on the kids back then but it made us what we are. Not sure what 'SNES classic' is but you can use savestates on emulators such as zsnes.
This was never on SNES either that or you hacked your console to play arcade games
Infinite lives also used on the last stage as well, went from 0 lives remaining, died, stayed at 0 lives remaining. Yes, I know the end bit gets very hard, but might want to add that to the video description.

Never played the Genesis version myself but this arcade version is pretty tough!
I'll say the arcade's final boss is surely easier. On the Genesis version, the final boss' pattern is totally different- it's not all about just spamming out 30 bullets for the win. Actually a challenge there.
@@JudgmentStorm Nah dude the thing is that it's super easy if you've got the ammo to spare, hellishly difficult if you don't. Keeping enough ammo for the boss is really hard and requires you to plan out every action throughout the level, often running and hiding from enemies instead of killing them just to save some ammo. Megadrive version lacks this hardcore fun ammo management though.
Quack Stack i have the Genesis version on my Virtual Console section on my Win U(from Wii area). The only problem I have is that when you die, you get penalized with more enemies coming in on your next life.
Bats are spammed in its version of the pyramid interior so that at least is much harder

The last boss is ridiculously easy, they should have made it more challenging, but in any case the game is fun

Good observation. While the arcade version has better graphics, the Mega Drive version has better music and feels smoother.
@@PlasticCogLiquid 3 more stages added, plus between stage briefings to catch you up on what is going on, and why Leila and Albatross are doing what they are doing. My only gripe, some of the music was removed, and some songs reused for some stages.

This game really didn't seem to have a point to me. There needed to be more to it other than just a bunch of henchmen and a single boss.
Play the Genesis version if you want more, 3 stages and an actual story. No extra bosses needed, Gimdo sent enough henchmen after you to last a life time.

Depending upon your mame version you can go into the main menu (tab-key) during a game, select cheat menu and configure to your desire. Make sure you have enabled the cheat menu through your mame.ini. If cheats are still not available after doing this you may need some additional file(s) in your mame directory which enable cheats which you can google. hope this helps
I know, my point is that you cheated the last level putting infinite bullets. Very disappointing
Then you should have said that to begin with instead of saying 'how to cheat' which makes no sense. 'Very disappointing'? Personally I loathe using cheats and never use them in my private gaming. But many arcade games are extremely difficult to complete and a cheat is used only to present the entire playthrough for the viewer. Also I'm not going to waste my time doing a hundred takes/runs to make a unnatural 1cc perfect longplay (like other channels).
Last level has that difficult. Everyone can end it with infinite ammo. If you don't want to "waste your time" then don't play a game that is too hard for you.

Not as classic as first one. Gunplay doesn't feel as good as rolling thunder 1. Also the music is too peaceful and funky, doesn't match with the game well.
I agree but I think this games music is far better. I really like the tone it sets. If I remember correctly RL1 just loops the same track on most, if not all stages. But the track is unforgettable. thanks for watrching
RedSevenNine i agree that the music itself is good, but it doesn't match with the game's atmosphere. RT1 have only 2 tracks but they matched with the game fine.
