You Sir are an expert not only in fly tying but demonstrating your skills. I will encourage every young person I know who is learning this art to pay attention to you. You're a great teacher and a hugh contribution to this amazing art from. Thank you
Thank you so much for the awesome tip! I have been tying flies my whole life and I have been trying to figure out a better way to make realistic wings. Now I can start making better flies, thanks to you, much respect to you
WoW ... such a GREAT tutorial, you make it so understandable and well explained not just how, but why. The BAT fly ... brought tears to my eyes ! Just BEAUTIFUL! Thank you, and I'm new to tying. I don't want to do crappie flies and jigs. Youu give me the confidence and knowledge I need. thank you again, Nick in Redfield Arkansas, USA (new sub)
Make more! Please.. Why did you stop man? This was by far one of the best videos I've seen on flyg tying on UA-cam.. Make more! You'd be huge in no time I'm sure! Make the next one a complete mayfly origami fly. Like the one you did when you tied the whole caddis. I've filled my box with your caddis version. I want to make a whole row of your version of mayfly origami flies too. But I need to see just how you make it. Thanks in advance!
Thank you! It's Whiting Coq de Leon capes, not saddles. I haven't tried saddles but that could work too. You can use any feather but I think CDL is optimal due to the long fibers and thin but strong stem.
James can you tell me exactly what I should be purchasing for origami wings. The packages I've been getting the feathers are very short and I am thinking I need to buy a full saddle. I plan on making plenty of them once I get started but I need advice as to what I should be buying. Thanks
Hello. I just discovered your channel and I think it's an excellent wing technique for fly tying. I'll try to make some flies with your technique. Thank you very much for the good explanation. Greetings.
Thank you so much, i have been trying to get to grips with the Wally wing all day. So many downsides to it. Right size, type and quill thickness. Then the lock on all that material, this upsets almost everything. Upsets me when the split goes wrong. This can be done off the fly, made in pairs, and locked in and posed as you wish. Tomorrow is a new wing design day.
Those are just standard tweezers from a supermarket. You can use a dubbing needle instead and squeeze the stem between your thumb and the needle to get a soft bend to the stem. The cone is a nozzle for silicone tubes. Should be available in most hardware shops. Just cut it. The point opening is about 3mm.
Very good demonstration, I might try it on my Daddies, but the big question no one has asked, do they inspire more takes than the the common Sedge patterns? Very well tied flies.
Thanks! Well, that’s a good question. Probably not. But I don’t know how to properly compare it. The fly that’s on my leader is the one being taken and I often use origami wings so they work. But so does an elk hair caddis. I guess it’s up to the one who is fishing and what type of flies he/she likes to fish. And the right recipe varies all the time. That’s the beauty of fly fishing :)
Good answer. My answer would be shorter- Who cares? This just looks like fun to tie, it's certainly unique and I have no doubt that it will catch plenty of fish. For me tying is half the fun of the whole f-f experience. For me it's yoga for the fingers and the mind; no need to rush. Thanks, James, for sharing that technique; not everyone would.
I don't know which fly you mean since this is just explaining the origami technique. I can fold and tie in a wing in about a minute if I'm not too picky about every fiber being absolutely perfect. But I like perfect so I often spend a few minutes on each wing.
That depends on the position of the wings, how big/thick the are etc. But I'm mostly using them as caddis wings (like on the Fax Caddis or larger variants) and in that position I've never had a problem with it no matter the size.
Is it allowed to use such wings? Only joking, never seen anthing so natural. They started selling different tools for fixing wings in the 70s, but your flies James are just ingenious! / Hi from another Stockholmer :)
Hi James, I was trying out one of your origami wings but the hackles I have aren't wide enough for great results...Are you using cock saddle feathers? If so, where can I buy the half and half capes that you have? I saw something similar on the Taimen website.. Do you remember exactly which capes you have.
@@consuelo1441 I mainly use Coq de Leon capes. But I guess saddles are ok too. The combo pack that I've got is called "CDL Versa pack" and has 4 half necks.
@@onceandaway Thanks for the reply James. I have some similar coq de Leon feathers on their way... I have seen a few origami wing videos from different people but it is your video which has inspired me to see their potential... My attempts with smaller feathers (until the broader ones arrive) have improved and I like the results. Just for your information, I've heard tell that a British fly tier called Terry Ruaan was tying the Jens Pilgaard origami wing even earlier, way back in the early 90´s. He called it the ´improved wonder wing´.. The only difference was (as I understand) that Terry Ruaan tied the wing straight on to the hook as you do.
Your instruction skills not to mention your skill level is second to none.
Thank you so much!

Thanks! No, I'm sorry. The wing technique is the same as I already showed and the whole fly is a display fly so not for mass production anyway.
