Thank you for posting this. I came upon a family far out of auto club ranger who had just gotten a flat out can of gunk couldn’t patch. It was time for a spare. Then the hatch wouldn’t open which meant no access to the spare. Their Jack also failed. A comedy of errors that left them stranded. We used a found tent stake to wedge the opening a tiny bit to drop the hook on a ratchet strap down the gap. The hook met the wire. It wouldn’t release from the bottom but pulled the wire out the window gap and we were able to then manually pull the wire which released the latch. What a save, thanks to your vid!!
I second this. Just did it on your suggestion and even the ends of the paint handle are perfectly curved for this job. My door handle still works but I think my problem is the latch at the bottom needed living. Left the paint handle in the glove box just in case.

my little brother has this exact car and his trunk latch is broken. Not a huge problem but he just had a brake light go out and has to open the trunk to change the bulb, this video is a life saver :)

When you said, "All you have to do is grab the moving part of that latch with the hook," I was thinking how much better it might be if you added on just a small illustration. You could hold the latch mechanism in your hand and demonstrate where the hook will grab it and pull.

It works!! at the beginning I didn't know where put the little hook but I see the moving part when I tried to open and I pulled hard and it opened. The bad thing is that I need to make this process every time I want open the door 😓, But thanks!
I was able to open my liftgate but only during evening hours. I suspect the cable expanded during daylight due to sunlight exposure. In the evening, the cable contracted. Anyway, I just replaced the latch and the actuator as well. What a PIA. My knuckles are scraped, and I've got bruised wrists. Now I've got to replace the lower ball joints and struts.
Great video... no breaks on disassembly! $5 FIX : I took mine all apart and took a look at the broken plastic piece... took some CRAZY GLUE and a popsicle sticks to reenforce The broken plastic... sprinkled the wet CRAZY GLUE with baking soda and let every dry ! It still looked like it needed reenforcement so I took some epoxy stick I had in stock and coated everything ! Two hours later everything dry & put back together and better than NEW! Poor design on the original part thats for sure!
When the window is rolled down, which side of the window do you stick the hook wire down into? In between the window and outside of the rear hatch? Or in between the window and interior trim panel?
In between the window and the outside of the rear hatch. You don't even need to use a light. As long as you know how the mechanism works, you can move the rod around and feel it catch. Then pull up on the rod while pulling on the handle.
We have a 2001 version have yet to try this, husband was hoping to see you close the back after the video to see if there were any other issues. Or if it gets stuck again
My rear hatch window just stopped...I can hear power to it actually but it stopped moving..I checked all the tiny fuses but maybe its a cb...or it may be the motor? Do a vlog about this please

It wouldnt be 500 dollars but I expect nothing less from this entitled generation that wants everything done free and quickly. It will be 1hr labor for diagnosis and the replacement part if needed. Which is way less than 500, you might be able to afford it along with your 42 cups of star bucks this month alone.

Sooooooooo this helps you open the door. So what is your long term solution? Doing this every time? You’ll eventually have to pull the panel off to fix the latch or cable or whatever. My rear window won’t go down and can’t open the rear liftgate either. I was able to finagle the door open a couple times but now it completely won’t open. I’m thinking the latch isn’t busted but not sure. Going to tear it apart this weekend I guess. Mine’s an 04 with 108k
If the exterior handle simply flops up and down with no resistance, then it is broken. A piece of plastic the size of my fingernail actually breaks loose. The aftermarket replacement handle you get from Toyota will break again in a few months, so I would find one elsewhere. Mine is 2003 with 130k miles.

I have a theory -- please someone tell me if I'm full of it -- that the reason these latches and convoluted cable latch assemblies fail is because of water and dirt and salt and crud that get down inside the innards of the rear hatch and corrode everything. Well, wouldn't a simple solution be to permanently seal, and disable, the roll-down window on the hatch? Isn't that the chief way the water and crud get down inside the hatch, since a roll-down window cannot be sealed as tightly as a fixed window (much like a windshield)? Why do you really need a roll-down window there, anyway, as long as the hatch itself opens and closes as it should? I suspect some kind of good silicone sealer would keep out just about all that crud? Or am I not thinking of something?
Interesting theory. But I think the weak link is the original material that breaks. The replacement part that I bought via Amazon was a stronger metal a the place where the previous one had broken. I bet all the after-market replacements are not made of the cheap plastic that Toyota sells.

I had to climb into the back and then disassemble the interior panels of the back door, and Take pictures to help you remember how to put it back together. Then I was able to grip the cable with long pliers, and pull it enough to push the door open. Remember first to unlock all doors.
There's a big different. The clips is under the door where it meet the bumper. You need to have the door open to unclip them. At least it is in my Highlander.

You can make the rod from a paint bucket handle. A coat hanger is not stiff enough; but the paint bail is perfect.

The problem is, well known by all Sequoia owners, is that the rear hatch, window and rear wiper often all stop working.

Interesting, never heard the baking soda thing. Have to try that out.
There is a good aftermarket part that is made of metal vs. plastic. Bought it on ebay ~$20 new. Works much better than OEM.

Please update us...what was the remedy for the window? My guess is a broken window regulator, which is a cable-pulley assembly.
Take a screwdriver for Cotter pins it's got the curve in it you could go up in there and catch the inner mechanism and open the door I've done it.

My problem turned out to be a very dirty sticky latch. I sprayed some penetrating fluid up under and, voila, it opened no problem...

Just done mine takes me almost 2hr & replaced the hatch alone, it takes a bit of patient.

this may work in some cases but the problem can be the lock itself is seized and this method won't open it

You still have to remove the paneling to install the part lol

Now my latch broke and previous owner replaced it before me . Arghhh
Still have to take the door apart to install the that latch assembly they gave you.
But now he doesn't have to sit in the back of the vehicle to take the door apart. 100 times easier with it open
