Tim this is a friggin masterclass yet again. Love the unique decision you made with the A & B cam placements. Def breaks the traditional interview barrier and im here for it! haha keep pumping out the gold my man. Much love 🙏
I thought it was interesting that you talk about how clutch tethering your audio recorder’s aux output directly to your camera was. I was taught to always shoot like this if possible. This is the way to go when using dual system audio in general if possible, as you get a backup and in my experience you get perfect syncing as well, no drift Baby. Zero realistic downsides IMO , you can even use a wireless go or something to tether if you need wireless. I bring direct boxes to convert 3.5m to xlr and back if needed
I always love watching these BTS breakdowns. There's always something to learn. What was the reasoning for having both camera angles so similar rather than shooting wider and just cropping in sections for the edit? Other than a backup camera and memory cards
A few reasons… I always do my best to avoid cropping in post. It’s always best to film things in camera the way you want. I think the angles actually very different. The tighter angle compresses the background so much more and you wouldn’t achieve this by cropping. I wanted the b cam to be more than a backup angle. It feels different within the story. A cam is more intimate and b cam is more laid back and informational in the story. Great question! Hope that helps 👍
@@timothy_films I guess I was meaning more of having the second camera off axis a little more for that kind of variety instead of both of them being more head on
@@tbeiber09 ok makes sense! I’m not a big fan of mixing center frame direct to camera and then off camera angle. Pretty disjointing to me. I also wanted something unique and different and not the same old traditional look. 🤘
Wow the image from those BM cams looks amazing. Love the composition and shot selection. Please do more breakdowns… these are really valuable. New subscriber!
Nice ,I dont often do my own audio , but for sit-down interviews I have been doing it more lately . I would always worry about concealed lavs and clothes noise , even with a sound recordist !, but I see that with a well placed and good quality shotgun on a boom , you don't need the lav . Just get it right with the boom , to 2 tracks ,different levels . Fx9 has very decent pre amps , better than many of the cheaper ext audio recorders , and just record in Camera , with the bonus of zero TC drift :)
Great video. Straight to the point. Teaching rather than self promoting. Thanks. By the way, what is the name of that incredible C-stand and the 4X4 super bounce + diffuser?
Sound blanket is a nice touch, do you often shotgun mic and lav for backup? 99% of the time I find myself using lav audio and the boom is the backup personally.
I’m always using the boom as my main source for interviews. It’s a higher quality mic and the lavs are hidden by clothes which obstructs sound a little. That’s why the lav is my backup. There’s no right or wrong, just my preference.
Great interview breakdown! Definitely subscribing. As a beginner it is great to see you are able to use that 300d for that key light. I got a Nanlite Forza 300 on the way, but been worried it might not be enough with everyone using 600d or even 1200 for booklight. By the way, did you use a warmer color temperature for that 600x with spotlight lighting up the center left background?
Glad it was helpful! I definitely use the 600 and 1200 for certain setups. Every situation is different. I can't remember exactly what temp we used for the backlight, but I believe it was a little warm.
I’m planning on doing a whole color grading breakdown but the simple version is I used Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro and 4K which have incredible colors and graded with Kodak 2383 in Davinci. Tweaked the colors from there 🤘
Another welcome breakdown but am wondering about catchlight or eye light? Can see you are a fan of top down and or side light but for that extra connection especially when the tones if the shot and face are quite muted and its facing the camera then some eye light would probably have added something. Just a thought. Thx
@@timothy_filmsanother question if you don't mind. How did you set up that safety channel? I have a zoom h4n pro and was wondering if we could do the same thing.
@@snead1 I used the Zoom H6 which has a 1/8 Line Out port. I was able to run that to the camera. I'm not sure about the h4n. Check to see if it has a line out that can be gain adjusted.
Love the A and B cam angles. I’ve never been a huge fan of the off to the side cam B angle when it’s a one sided interview. Just looks like the subject is talking to nobody lol
@@timothy_films Thanks! How would you handle this type of documentary style interview if you were on your own. What would you cut? Keep? Gear differences.
@@CreativeIsolation I would honestly try to do as much of it as I could which means more pre production to make sure everything is dialed and getting to set earlier to set up. I would’ve probably not done that background light and haze just because we had to constantly monitor and fan out the haze. It’s definitely hard to watch cameras, monitor audio and conduct the interview by yourself.
That facetime/teleprompter idea is money!!!!
Yeah I saw a friend do it once and it’s the best solution I’ve found for this style 🙌
@@timothy_films The Eyedirect autocue is great too. So long as your camera isn't set up right beside a wall, you're golden.
Amazing! What would be cool is if next time, you show what everything looked like before you did the lighting setup and after!
