    I remember seeing 4449 when it sat in Oaks Park as a child. After being moved to the BN Roundhouse my Grandfather and I walked across the rail yard and was granted permission to look at the work being done on the engine & tender. I remember being in awe at how large the engine was. The whole area is now high rise apartments & condos. Thanks for the great documentary.

    Its crazy to think that if it wasn't for a guy oiling the rods and bearing when it was picked. Sp4449 would probably have been scrapped 😢

    SP 4449 has had an impressive operation history since it was restored back to operation during the mid-1970s for the American Freedom Train tour. The BNSF rr black/ silver paint scheme of 2000-2001 was a decent reflection of the scheme worn by SP steam engines back during their final years of operation during the 1950's.

    This has always been my favorite train. Especially growing up. A few years ago. I came to find out that my grandfather was a conductor on the 4449 many years ago. Back when it was on the main passenger lines. Never met my grandfather. Passed away before I was born. I hope I can go on one of these excursions. It would be the closest I would ever get to being around my grandfather.

    4449 is like any other "Northern" class locomotive, like UP 844 and N&W 611. What makes 4449 so different is the wonderful stream lined features and the bright orange, sliver and red orange coloring, typical of the :Day light" passenger trains. This made 4449 the most beautiful and easily recognized steam locomotive in the world.
    It is wonderful that this locomotive,4449, 611, 844, and 4014 are preserved, maintained, and operated. ;-)

      There is always a chance. A lot said that 4449 coming to Michigan would be impossible. The real issue today is the Union Pacific won't allow 4449 to run on their tracks. BNSF is the only railroad that allows the engine. Which is a real shame because 4449 running to Sacramento, Redding Trestle, and Los Angeles over the SP Route was amazing. But, there is always hope for a change...

    Amazing how a full-sized replica was used in the crash scene. It looks so real that it looks like the real one crashed. Movie magic am I right? It still gets confused thinking it's the real locomotive and not a replica mock-up

    I love this documentary, Train Guru. Aside from the criticism I offered in another comment, I just want to say that I really, really like what you've done here.
    I got to see the legendary 4014 come to my hometown so I know the feeling of seeing such a legend, in the steel flesh, as it were.
    Just out of curiosity, why won't U.P. let 4449 run on Union Pacific trackage any more? She'd be a good companion to their SP Heritage Engine, UP 1996.

    • @TrainGuru
      @TrainGuru  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the compliments. In regards to 4449, UP does not allow any steam locomotives that don't carry their logo to run on their trackage. It is why engines like SSW 819 are on display, and not riding the rails, and why C&NW 1385 cannot run on the mainline, and only on museum trackage.

      Back when I started recording. I realized right around the 1989 Era that I had forgotten that piece of information. I had about 5-6 days until May 20th hit. That is why I didn't go back and rerecord. In addition, the voice recording would've sounded different if I would've tried to just add it in to save time. I also left out the Cantara Loop Excursions in 1991.

      The SP was more relaxed with steam locomotives on their system. Unlike the UP, they had the a car on the train to power the passenger cars instead of a diesel. They also only used diesel locomotives to help an engine up or down a mountain or hill.
