This album is my personal fav. If you dig this far out sound check out "Viscera Eyes" or "Day of the Baphomets", both off this record.
The fan favorite album (other than Deloused) is Francis the Mute. Please check out the first track "Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus".
Glad you're digging the Volta. I feel like they're a standout band of this century for sure.

paula Bedlam is a great album too, but since it doesn't have Jon Theodore, it could never measure up to their previous stuff for me. It's such a different feel overall, in the production too - you can hardly even hear Ikey anymore. But to each their own, of course!

Mars Volta is pretty damned original. I can only handle in small doses. Unless I'm lifting at the gym. The lyrics are poetic as hell
I was obsessed with them for a good 2 years though, the guitarist has solo stuff too, He's a talent. The singer is uniquely gifted - that shrill voice and the WRITING man, the writing.

Amputechture is the pride of my record collection. I tended to ignore it when I was younger but it's become the quintessential volta album to me. It just has all the elements I enjoy about this great band, glad I got to see them live at least once.
The poor bass player Juan is an absolute monster, he recently had a bike accident though and it looks like he's having to learn to walk again. Really sad, he was in the band racer x back in the day too. GREAT bass player

Yeah when I first heard the album, I had a hard time listening to it, but now 10 years later I'm finding more and more to love about it. The lyrics are especially potent in this album for some reason, maybe because it's all about religion which just seems like the perfect subject for a TMV album. Vermicide is the real standout for me, but Tetragrammaton and Day of the Baphomets come in close to the top.

Glad more people are listening to Volta. Volta has been my go to band since they first hit the scene. The balance between order and chaos is beautiful with every album that bears their name. Keep it going. You really can’t go wrong with an album or song. Cassandra Gemini Is probably the best ear food you could ever jam in there. Frances the mute (song) is a great one. For something a different you may try zed and two naughts or soothsayer. Goliath is a song that you would march into war with armed with only swords. Have fun. They’re all fantastic.

The guitarist and sole composer Omar Rodriguez Lopez is Puertorican so you were close with thinking of Cuba, but not quite there :)
His musical hero is Larry Harlow, a salsa pianist legend, so it's pretty clear there is a lot of Latin American music in his vibes, indeed.

  • @jimmybrunson2553
    @jimmybrunson2553 4 роки тому +3

learning this song by ear was a BITCH, glad you picked up on the crimson vibes, omar loves his chromatics and dissonance much like fripp. omar rodriguez lopez is the sole and only composer in mars volta, he is much like frank zappa, total genius - if you have any interest in his solo material i highly recommend asco que (the song had a longer title but youll find it with those two words, short and punchy progressive psychedelic much heavier on his latin roots)
oh another tidbit - john frusciante plays all the guitars here, omar would play the songs live but preferred to use session musicians for the recordings because he can judge the performances more objectively

  • @antoniomaraspin

I suggest you to try At The Drive-In - "Quarantined" or "Non-zero Possibility" (the avant/post-hardcore group singer-founder Cedric Bixler-Zavala and the guitarist-cofounder Omar Rodriguez-Lopez came from). Their style as ATDI was the embryo of The Mars Volta music...
p.s. latino vibes are pretty common in The Mars Volta music, probably because they’re from New Mexico...

Hopelessly unique. Love that! The Mars Volta are special. Six albums that transcend and inspire... evolve and transform from stanza-to-stanza, song-to-song and album-to-album. There are so many great songs. I’m sure you will be steered to the second album, Frances the Mute and back to their debut, Deloused in the Comatorium. But I will go against the grain and recommend either Metatron or Cassavettes.
Keep bringing the Mars reax... I’ll bring friends.

The 2 main guys of the band, Omar and Cedric, are Latinos. Born and raised in El Paso TX, so they had a lot of exposure to Latin music. Very unique style and none of their songs sound the same. If you do one more Mars Volta track, please do Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of) from their first record. I think it's one of their absolute finest tracks. It funnels their trademark chaos into imo one of their most accessible songs and the dynamics of the song are just begging for good sound systems/headphones. Keep up the good work Mr Wolfe

I remember an interview where Cedric made mention of a story out of South America (Brazil?) in reference to this song, where a Sister of the Catholic church had epileptic seizures during a sermon and the clergy had her confined. Later lashing her to a horizontal cross and had 'exorcisms' performed on her. A couple days later they shoved a rag in her mouth to stifle the screams. She died shorty after.

3:16 Texan. They're from El Paso (if you follow American politics, in the recent Democratic party primary, Beto O'Rourke is actually an acquaintance. He played bass in a band with the lead singer of TMV back in the 80's). But they're way into Latin jazz and it shows up as a major influence on their sound, _especially_ on this album. This is one of the albums where they do go into Spanish-language lyrics, as well, on a few songs. "Asilos Magdalena" is... special.

I liked how in other videos you compared TMV to modern art rock. Omar is actually more of an artist than a musician. He has no classical training, and has said that people only see him as a musician because that's his public persona. He makes a lot of visual art. He also has more side projects than I can list here. One in particular, done with cedric and zach hill is very much "abstract art" I don't advise reviewing it on your channel, however you should give it a listen on your own time. Warren oats and Half Kleptos are the most listenable tracks imo,. Its not noise, its just very....avent garde.
