Is Vanlife BETTER without heat???

- After 8 winters (mostly in Canada) living in a van without heat before installing a diesel heater, then having heat for a couple winters before now being without heat once again I've been reminded of some of the amazing benefits of life without heat and decided to discuss this topic as I settle into a beautiful west coast destination where I will spend the rest of the month.

I’m Amanda and Frank is my co-pilot. We have lived in a van for 10+ years. I am a photographer and forager. We enjoy hiking, camping, paddle boarding, climbing and being outside as much as we can. We have countless stories and lessons to share and are always trying to learn new skills and improve in many aspects of life. Thank you for coming along.
#solofemalevanlife #vanlife #wintervanlife
I’m a 73 yo full-time van dweller and love the cold nights and have never used my heater during the night but do like the option of having heat during the day. I have found that I don’t require very much heat as my body seems to adapt to the seasons. One thing I do love is my good, old-fashioned hot water bottle which keeps my feet toasty all night. Keep on being you! Hugs to you and Frank.
I lived in the Highlands of Scotland when I was young . One winter we got use to sleeping in woollen hats and woke to ice on the inside of the single pane windows and frost on the carpet. Hmm I'm all for a little heat nowadays lol.
Bern there, done that in a different place, lol! 😂😂
How cute when Frank peaked out from under the sleeping bag!! Beautiful camping spot!! Gorgeous waves! Cool surfing shots! Frank jumping down to get the big log! Takes grit to go without heat 100% of the time. All the best to you and Frank!
Nope.... ✌️ Don't think so.... ✌️ When no heat you just become one of the critters...... 🥰🥰🥰👃
Avoid mold at all costs. It is not something to fool around with. I know how it can cause so many bizarre symptoms and destroy one’s body.
Your health is the most important thing.
I enjoy your videos & Frank’s cuteness!
Totally agree with this.
Just some advice so maybe you benefit from my personal experience: It makes sense to buy the new fuel line in a purpose built kit. A purpose built kit can be had for around $15.00 US and will contain new gear clamps and the pieces of neoprene hose you will need to transition the new fuel line to the pump, filter, fuel tank and heater connections. Anyway, good luck and give Franklin an ear and tummy rub for me.
Beautiful intro, that camping spot looks perfect. Blessings to you and Frank. I did van life in the PNW with no heat source other than the stock heater. Taught my German shepherd the command, " snuggle in", we never froze. ❤ love your videos
Oh I should have mentioned one of the BIG down sides to having heat is less Frank snuggles 🤦🏻♀️
I lived two winters in MO. Without heat I got used to it, but that was 30 years ago. I would die now and my arthritis goes crazy. Be safe and ❤ to you and Frank.
@@annethompson4886
Yes, I agree 100% here. With advanced arthritis being in the picture significantly in the van, keeping the air, dry, mold free… goes beyond creature comforts. It’s just a matter of health both physical and mental.
@@annethompson4886🙋♀️🙋♀️
My great grandma used to put river stones, I think flat, round ones on the fire stove, about the size of a cantaloupe, flat, heat em up all evening and then when she went to bed she would wrap in a brown bag or flour sack and put in her bed under the blankets. You might be able to do the same on nights you have an outdoor fire. Have two or three comfy ones in your van and bring em out on those occasions.
Aww Frankie looked so happy out on the beach with all them sticks . Melts my heart ❤️. Thanks for sharing him with me Amanda. Stay Safe Always God Bless Ya'll. Mucho Love from your friend in Michigan Tam ❤️ ♥️ 💕 💗
Thanks Tammy, he’s having a blast here. The next video will be extremely heartwarming as Frank gets his splint and wrap off and can go in the water again.
Aww I can't wait . Safe Travels Always... ❤❤
Hey Amanda, you brought up some cons about not having heat that I would’ve never thought of. You have adapted so well to your van life and living without heat that you can do it but not everybody could but I’m happy for you and i’m happy you got your heater fixed Frank is such a happy boy. You guys always make my day. Thanks for sharing. I always look forward to you guys next video you guys be safe out there and stay warm.🇺🇸♥️🙏🫶👍🐾🏔️🚐🇨🇦
I like your lights
Thank you 🙏🏼
Great video. All the best to everyone.
Yes, I've tried going without heat...in my house. Inflation made our heating costs jump higher as well as other things like food. It may have been easier if we didn't have polar vortex and winter storms. So what I discovered is that my bottled water froze, some of my canned goods froze and my water pipes started springing leaks. ugh.... and worst of all, I ended up catching pneumonia and almost died last winter. I had to use a little heat but I keep it down pretty cool in the house and only heat a couple rooms now. And even still, my power bill was scary this month so I'll be relieved when winter is done this year!!
Are in the UK? @true
What I loved best about this video was the macro and the micro: Walkabouts in a Coastal Temperate Rainforest and Moisture Management in Truck.
Hello from British Columbia Canada ❤🎉
Hello from also in BC 🌊☀️
@@tidelinetoalpine my youngest daughter is in Tof
I couldn’t handle being cold so I’m impressed that you can find pros and cons with no heat. You are definitely a strong woman. Frank is looking adorable as usual. Hope you do get your heater going just incase. ❤❤
No heat is very painful if you have arthritis (I do) but I love sleeping with the windows open in the winter. A down blanket and beanie keep me warm enough..
Somebody with a furry disposition ( mentioning no names) is starting to feel much better and wants to get up and play around!
If your under 50 you can withstand going without heat but I found as you get older you reallyyy need heat on where ever you are!!! Glad you got heater somewhat fixed!!!Glad to see Frank is doing well!! Stay warm--lol😂😂
HBD 🎉 BDAY buddy!! (A little belated) Hope you had an awesome day being celebrated and loved 🤗
Now i know how dogs get their bark !
Once I got lithium batteries, I had to get heat to keep them warm enough to charge in cold weather. I like the heat too, truth be told.
It makes me happy to know you'll have heat. Thank you for tackling the project. 😊
I actually really like cold weather (I enjoy seasons, etc.). And I agree with all your reflections. I think if it were me, I'd just turn it on everyday maybe once in the morning to dry the air from the night, and again in the evening to do the same; maybe when watching a film, reading, etc. in the evening, that's when I'd have it on, and obviously - especially - when it rains, and the moisture content is higher, etc. I learned a lot listening to you about the maintenance of these things, and how some methods of heat are better for high moisture areas than others. If we ever do our van build (on our wish list), then I'll be sure to get the high-moisture-heating system, this way, we'll be ready for all eventualities. IMO, you live in one of the most beautiful areas of our planet... so many times after I watch your vlogs I wish I'd been born in BC/Canadian. I grew up in Seattle, and used to visit BC growing up too, and I think BC has an edge. :) I hope Canadians don't destroy all they have with excessive building in the cancerous institution called: growth for the sake of growth... I digress. Hugs to you and Frank! xo
@tidelinetoalpine - I enjoy nature sounds (rain, wind in trees, waves, birds) and fans take up a lot of auditory space! During extreme heat waves I get overstimulated by box fans running day & night.
I have moved my clothes to ziploc bags, presidents choice big box. No heat.
Hi Amanda,
When its cold overnight..like Im talking Ontario cold.. I plug my 12v electric blanket in to my Bluetti 500w power bank to prewarm my bed....its toasty and quiet and literally takes very little power. It also helps wearing a hoodie to bed. You are lucky to have Frank to warm you up...i bet he keeps you warm and cozy. I hear its actually healthier to sleep in cool temps with a window cracked open. Im such a light sleeper that the sounds of a heater going on and off would keep me up at night. I admire your grit and long life experience living in your van....you gave me ideas I hadnt thought of before.
Wendy
Hi Amanda 👋
My heater made the same sounds for about a month before it finally quit. It’s been a couple weeks now with no heat. I’m in the Nanaimo area and the temperatures have been pretty good.
Safe travels and adventures to you and Frank 👋😊🚐
I got worried but, I trust you know what best for you and Frank. I try to keep my heat down and cool. Once in a while I blast the heat till I'm somewhat warm and I cover with blankets a lot. Keep warm the way that makes you happy.❤❤❤❤
I’m usually pretty cold at my cabin cuz it’s not insulated and it’s very expensive to heat it. $600/month to not freeze. Two room cabin. With a washer and dryer in a separate building where the hot water heater also lives. I need to get undepressed so I can get myself moving.
Beautiful beach shots! I don't have heating in my van. I live in Portugal so not too cold. I go to bed early and when it's really nippy I have a hot water bottle (which my dog loves!). I agree about everything you say. It's the damp. -When it's raining it gets gloomy and damp inside. I don't have a fridge either. I use a wee wicker picnick basket on the floor. works very well. It's the summer heat that's much harder to deal with. No escape from 40'C!
At 72 I don’t want to be cold but when I was your age I could have done it!
Hi Frank! You are too cute!😊
There’s no log too stout, for Frank to chew it out 😝 What a great guy! Hey, Amanda @tidelinetoalpine, you used to skateboard, didn’t you? Do you think you’ll give surfing a go? 🏄♀️
Being content is right. Thank you for all nuggets of your wisdom, Bye for now😊
You woukd be most impressed with how much heat a few tea lights or candles or even an antique kerosene lantern can throw off.
YES! BUT open a window a tich. You dont want CO2 poisoning
Amanda and Frank so happy..,,
Sounds like the fan hitting the casing and please get the white nylon line much better line.
Did give you a little help so your windows don't have to be scraped or defrosted on the inside get you some Rain-X auntie condensation and fog, your windows won't fog up nor will the ice up on the inside this way you can just get up when it's time to go you won't have to deal with that I have been doing it that way for years well since the 80s LOL you and Franky stay safe
i like how you said you hang out with the doors open when you dont use heater. its so true, in a house too.
Hi Amanda, your most definitely a very strong young woman. I admire your strength. Not many can survive as you do and it's admirable. I've been living in my SUV and a somewhat camperized cargo van on and off since June of last year. I kept the van basic. No plumbing..no heat source. I like things simple because it's makes me feel stronger and more confident in my own abilities to survive with less. Great video and may you always be blessed.
Making me homesick! Tofino is one of the most beautiful places on earth. And your photography does it justice. Thank you❤️🥰
The Great Canadian Beaver strikes again! Yes, Frankie you give the crows a what for and call them out their names!!❤
7:36 He is sooo dang cute!
Also I am so impressed by your technological n mechanical skills!
sounds better No ticking sound
I am glad to watch those people in the frigid Pacific wet suit, no suit, dry suit 😉better me watching them staying dry and warm. I hate being cold. Adore Frank. ❤❤❤
Crisco candle stove? If the van's insulated, should work. Can boil water fotea, boil eggs, soup, etc. Need a vent for CO, and an air intake.
Frankie was so eager to help you with the heater fix 😄. Another beautiful vid in the wilds. Stay true, stay you ✌️.
Cheers,Danny.

Some see nature all ridicule and deformity, and by these I shall not regulate my propositions. And some see no nature at all. But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself." -William Blake.
Thank you for sharing your journey ✌️💞🤟
Good for you. I’d rather have heat than food 😂🤣when I’m warm, I’m happy ❤
Seems like one of those small wood stoves would be the best. :)
I do get ice inside the van lol. Winter almost over. 50 mph winds but 40 at night
Omg, beautiful scenery. I'd much rather be colder than warmer. BUT, lol, if it's too cold, yuck. 😊
All great points Amanda! Love your middle way...💚💜💚💜love to you both 🥰
Thanks Dana 💜✨
Thank you for sharing your wonderful life with us.
What beautiful morning shots❤
Ahhhhhhh......Tofino! Readying my van in snowy/melty/icy Alberta! Love to you and Frank.💜💙 p.s. I had a propane heater in my 4-season truck camper and i hated it...the fan kept me awake at night.
I really liked your location and the scenes were amazing 🎉
As far as heat or no heat, I think your pro’s are same as mine for no heat. When I was traveling long distances, I would run the heater longer to build up the temperature inside my rig. Especially when it was negative temps, I would have heat only to keep me warm and not let the water freeze. Of course, plenty of layers of clothing and added insulation inside to keep the heat in place and keep the cold 🥶 out.
Summer has the opposite affect of too much heat and being limited to how much you can take off or sweat through before heat exhaustion. Thanks for your advice and sharing your videos.😊
As usual, fabulous photography , Amanda!
Good discussion. Lovely scenes. Frank is looking better. Thanks for sharing
I think it’s important that there’s always the option to choose warmth when necessary. Also I really don’t like the thought of mould appearing inside Truck. That really wouldn’t be good for yours and Frank’s health. So yep, keep the heat source for necessities if nothing else. 🔥😊
5:20 Not even once in my life (Australian here) had I considered that a beach could freeze!!! LOLOL! 🤣
Your van is great. Im really learning a lot with your videos. Thank you. Take care.
Was that a, woof? It was! He is saving his very best woofs for cats…
Do you at least have an electric blanket or small space electric heater that you can plug into a backup battery for emergencies? Beautiful ocean views. I can't imagine how cold that water was for those surfers. I love my comfort creatures, but I like sleeping in a cool room. You bring up some good points about the pros and cons of living without heat.
I’m in a S&B in Texas so my situation is very different but I am in the top of Texas where we do get winters and I haven’t had heat in 21.5 years. It isn’t always comfortable but we value blankets.
Frank is so adorable, he wants to be outside and enjoy seeing the world. And have a good chew on some wood. 😅 Good boy. 😍
I live in North Germany. We have a camper van that is a professionally insyalled van, it isnt a home build. My partner is German. I am frim the South of the world and come from a warm country.
There is no way that we could live in our camper and not have the heater on in winter. We would freeze. It is very unpleasant and I can't sleep when I'm freezing.
Sometimes, when I had to get up early to go to school to learn German, I had to have a blanket around me because it takes a while for the vehicle heater to start warming the front of the van, and it gets freezing.
We have a diesel heater that pushes warm air through vents throughout the vehicle.
Because you live in a very cold climate and you live in tour vehicle permanently no matter how you justify it, I do think that you should fix your heater by a professional as soon as you can.
I'm not sure if finances are a concern.
To be happily comfortable and dry you need to be warm. And all the other important things like everything getting dry, etc.
You might not have enough diesel in the tank and it is sucking air.
As soon as you can, I vote getting your heater sorted out.
The area you ate in now looks lively with the beach and surfers. Enjoy and hugs to you and Frank. 🤗💖
@janine yes agree totally 👌
That sound from the heater feels to me like your fan is rubbing against the housing. BTW, I saw you on the road going in to Tofino couple days ago. I recognized that green van at a distance. Great looking rig. Best.
Hey awesome! I hope you had a great time in Tofino.
Cold kills🥶 please get your heater fixed professionally 👍🙏
That's a stick and a half Frank !
I so appreciate what you said about living without heat helps you feel stronger and more resilient. I like bundling up when I'm cold and do not like any kind of blowing warm air because it erases the sounds of quiet happenings and dries out my eyes and nose .
I'm quite curious about your built in cold sink and wonder if you have a video on that. Love seeing how you and Frank are living it up! Thanks for another fun video.
Crows.....!! Whole another "discussion"..... 🤣🤣🤣 BTW..... They know all !! That's going on..... 🥰🥰🥰👍👍✌️🇨🇦
I love Crows
Sounds great. ❤
21:38 Sounds like the circulation fan is scrubbing against the housing. Mine did that. Had to wedge a piece of wood under the fan end.
We always think we need far more than we do. Great perspective!
I vote for heat. However, I don't like being dependent on climate control 24/7. I can practice going without a/c rather than heat. 😍 Snuggles to Frank.
Good information! thanks!
Frank still got the sticks terified
how do you power your heater?
Beautiful! All of it
It's wonderful to see Frank getting around so well!
I get what you say about getting warm by being active. When I lived in Michigan, we had heat but at 72 degrees, siiting around still felt chilly. I would go outside and start shoveling snow and get hot! I always felt better afterwards. My cheeks would get red....good circulation. I hope you get your heater fixed Amanda.❤❤ Frank is so cute!❤❤❤
Great video Amanda!
Great video! Moisture is a big issue here in Humboldt County, California. Even in the houses- mold- huge issue.
I got a tiny 200 watt Lasko ceramic heater that plugs into my bluetti EB3A testing out my set up this week - our temps are getting to freezing at night this week.👍🏼
thanks..
Never leave a diesel heater unattended. I personally know a person that lost their sprinter and dog when their heater caught on fire while they were away from it.😢😢
I love sleeping out in the cold in my tent, bivvi or hammock. I'm super thankful that i now have the right gear to do it. Im never cold even though we've had snow and hail here still, spring is just arriving. My hammock has been hanging out in the backyard (and tarp, underquilt, sleeping bag) for about a week now. I'd sleep in it every night except I would miss snuggling into my partner. Its good to have such problems :)
Franky boy is living on pure love! ❤
Bless you and precious Frank - Kim from New Zealand ♥
Thanks!
Thank you 🙏🏼 I hope you’re having a great week.
I've noticed the animals always try to put on extra weight before winter. Especially the black bears and raccoons. And they have thick, warm furry coats. So maybe if people were to gain some weight and use extra blankets we might be able to get through winter without heat. But some of us would not make it bc we aren't hardy enough or young and strong, etc. I thought I'd be fine but it almost killed me lol.
I finally did it I got the AG1 and through your channel so there ya go girlie let’s see how wonderful this is. It does taste like chalky grass 😩 but I gotta do it.
I love the simple day in the life kind-of videos. I've learned so much watching them. I've got a woodstove in my "bouse" and have used it daily all winter, and it's been such a benefit. From cooking to heating to drying to company at times. They do take work, but i can't imagine not having it.
I totally understand the being better adapted to cold living in cold, but it's been great to come in to heat after freezing outside 😊. Great discussion, and it's so cool how people can live and be comfortable in so many different ways. Thanks for the video 😊
Hello Amanda, nice to see you and Frank having a good time. Nice that you can fix the heater yourself. The quality of the audio is really nice. Have an amazing time on the beacht!
I'm always surprised that you became a heater user after how long you went without it. Also, I was surprised to see how much my body adjusted to the cold when i had an extended time using "blankets only". I used a hot water bottle and hand warmers on the really cold nights and wow. Sometimes I would be too hot!
I never camped in Alaska with heat. Worked around the weather and you would all be amazed how well your body can adjustvwith the right gear.
I love visiting your UA-cam site before I go to sleep, it so positive! Thank you for making your videos. It’s very inspiring to watch your travels. It’s kind of depressing knowing I have to go to work tomorrow morning. I’d love to chat sometime about finding a way to start traveling, and getting a van if my own someday. Goodnight from Portland, Oregon
Beautiful spot! Frank looks so happy chilling and chewing on sticks. We also have a chariot for our senior dog and it has been an amazing way to take him places.
❤❤ Frank ❤❤
Heat is good! And…you can turn it off!
Hello Amanda I'm glad you and Frank are doing well, he is so sweet I would just like to make the comment that I worked in the cold in the Midwest outside for 20 some years I have arthritis and move to Florida where I'm doing much better I would say that for Frank's health and his arthritis you should keep the heat on as he is a senior like me Good luck in all you do much love.
