- Is it weird that I have eight locomotives running through my house? Would your wife let you get away with this at your house?
Clearly, not everyone can get away with filling their house up with G-scale model trains. One room full of HO-scale trains, or a garage full of them, wouldn't be out of the question for a lot of families. I think my wife is a little more tolerant than most would be when it comes to putting up with living in a house full of trains!
To be completely honest, though, what you see in this video only existed for four straight days. I wouldn't want to live like this all the time! After I'm done playing with the trains for a few days, I put them all away and our house is back to normal for a while. Until the next time I want to play with them!
In the video, I show you all eight of my locomotives in action... including ones manufactured by LGB, Bachmann, Piko, and MTH. Both steam trains and diesel locomotives are featured, from railroads such as Santa Fe, Amtrak, and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway.
Thomas & Friends trains include Thomas, Annie, Clarabel, and Percy pulling the troublesome trucks.

I'm impressed you've managed to run all 8 trains at the same time without a collision.
If you were to see an overhead diagram of how I set up that layout, you'd see that there are a lot of loops that are separate from each other so that many of the trains do not share a track with any of the others. In a few cases, there are two trains sharing one loop but what I do for those is make a really big loop and create a lot of separation between the trains... then match their speeds so that neither catch up to the other.

I love the fact that you have so many model steam trains. Steam engines are my favorite type. I have a question for the other viewers. What type of train is YOUR favorite?
I like Percy with the Troublesome Trucks, the Amtrak passenger train, Thomas the Tank Engine with Annie and Clarabel, the Santa Fe Super Chief, the North Pole Express, the Porter, the Piko Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe steam locomotive, and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railway ALCO diesel locomotive. That makes 8 G scale model trains in the collection so far.
I see the HO scale caboose in this video on a straight piece of HO scale track.
You compare that to the G scale model trains and the Lionel S scale John Deere battery operated toy train set that does NOT come with a remote control.

Has anyone else ever ridden on a passenger train in real life? And if so, how many times? Where, as in on what railroad? This applies not only to US railroads, but railroads around the world.
I've ridden on Deutsche Bahn, the German railroad. From what I remember, the service was excellent, the train was very clean, and the sights were fantastic. I would really recommend taking a Deutsche Bahn for anyone who is visiting Germany. The ICE (Inter City Express) is probably the best passenger experience they offer. It's like Amtrak but way better.
Did you know that there are also model trains that are smaller in scale than Ho? The most common is known as N scale.

G-scale track is about $7 per foot. Thomas goes for about $200, not including any rail cars you want to pull behind him. You will also need a train control system to provide power to the rails and to control the trains. You could easily spend $600 USD or more just to get started, and it will make you want to expand with more trains and more track later. So, do this if you have some money saved up.

Wow,fantastic..!!!...How long does it take to set the tracks up,and how long do they stay up?...You must have a very understanding family,I know my wife would love them,but go nuts at the same time.....Wonderful layouts though..!!
A layout like that takes me about a day to set up. The next day I shoot the video. Sometimes I leave it up for one extra day, just to have fun with it without cameras rolling. But by the next day, it's time to take it down and put it all away.

Not very often anymore. The older I get, the more uncomfortable it is to bend down to set up the tracks. I think I've only set up the trains four times this year.
Next, you should buy Emily, James, and Gordon
Percy and Thomas are the only ones available with DCC control systems in DCC, at least at this time. If I were to add others to my collection, they would have to run on a separate analog power set of tracks, and I wouldn't be able to individually control each locomotive as I can with DCC.
Jim Zimmerlin you can buy the DCC sound module for Toby, Emily, and James but you’ll have to install it Manually , also you should try to buy some thomas rolling stock so the engines can have variety to pull instead of pulling the same thing over and over
Hiren Patel and Gordon isn’t even announced yet it was only shown on the DCC module description

Zero. I use LGB-brand track, and I take good care of it. I've even run tracks all the way over to my neighbor's house.

No, that was something we did to fill the void after the passing of our Cocker Spaniel, Morgan, and before we moved to our new house in Washington where we'd be able to have another Cocker join our family.
There was about a two year period at the end of our time in California where we knew it was the wrong time to add another dog to our family permanently, but we still wanted to have a dog around. So, fostering litters of puppies for our local humane society was the perfect solution to our problem until we finally were able to make our move to our big new house in Washington.

Great video, Jim. How much is your LGB full 6 car SantaFe SuperChief set worth? I know that the driving unit is $900 as you have said before.
It's been years since I bought that set... and my memory on the pricing is a little fuzzy. The way I remember it was about $900 for the "A" unit and about $600 for the un-powered "B" unit... and then about $300 each for the passenger cars. So, I'd estimate about $2700 for the six pieces together.
LGB is producing a new version of it for 2020. They're using a more expensive process for the silver metal parts, which is forcing the retail price up even more. I'm glad I got one when I did. I don't need two, so I'll leave it to other G-scale collectors to snap up the limited quantities of the new version!

There are G-scale sets you can buy that include some track... but what you see here is a large collection that was all purchased individually, a little bit at a time.

Unfortunately, the company that makes the Thomas and Friends trains in G-scale (Bachmann) only makes Percy and Thomas with the digital control circuitry that is compatible with my train control equipment. James only works with analog-controlled systems, and would not work on my layout. Sorry!

A fun thing about model trains is that it really doesn't matter! There's no right or wrong way to arrange the trains. It's just about having fun.

I'm not sure that it even exists in G-scale. I see it in HO, S, and O scale... but I'm not seeing it in G-scale at all. If you know of one, perhaps you can point me to it. I'm open to the possibility, if anyone actually makes one for G-scale.

OMG... you're right, Benjamin. It looks kind of cheaply built, but what the heck... the price for the set is less than what I've paid for one LGB freight car. So, I've ordered one! After it arrives, I'll make a video showing how it compares to a "real" G-scale model train. It is, to be honest, just a toy designed for young kids... doesn't run on track power at all, runs on four C batteries! Worst case scenario, my video can be an expose on what a piece of garbage it is compared to the normal G-scale stuff from other manufacturers. And if it turns out that it's not actually a piece of garbage... that's even better! Maybe some parents with limited budgets can be inspired to get a Polar Express Train Set to run around the Christmas tree this year. Check my channel around August 19th... I'll probably have a Polar Express video up by then.
