MEGA Vintage Locomotives Mail Unboxing - Will Any Run?

- It's been a while since I've done one of these mail unboxings and since the last one many parcels have shown up.
Quite a few different things arrived including locomotives new and old, a rotary snow plow, building kits, spare parts and a bunch of different letters.
Most of these locomotives are projects however some were brand new. Notably a couple Bowser and Atlas engines along with a Scale Trains H3 BNSF GE product. - Розваги
it is a solder sucker so you can desolder stuff, you melt the solder and it sucks it in to the vacuum. You press on the back to "load" it and press on the button to suck it up.
That's smart, I could see it being very helpful.
It looks like there was a stand to put the heated iron on, too, so it won't roll around.
The sucker will unscrew... you will eventually need to clean the old nasty solder out of it.

I’m glad someone sent you a real soldering iron!
He had on sent to him before. He just refuses to use it
@@bigwoz78 I have used it in several videos but I prefer the 100 watt for the reasons I mentioned.
@@bigwoz78you know I don't know what it is with people they make a big deal out of a damn soldering iron... Just like the ones that say everything has to be nmra standards. Most annoying people I've ever seen online...
I prefer to use a gas soldering iron
@@adamswindells1 yeah that's real smart use a gasoline on trains right.... I never seen people so goddamn nitpicky over a damn soldering iron. If it was me I would have told everyone to mind their own friggin business if the guy wants to use a soldering iron that is what he likes then let him use it. Same goes for the ones that go and parade around and say nmra standards this and that. F them
It’s always Christmas morning at SMT! A clear sign of how much people appreciate your channel.
Yes!! I'm so happy you got my package!! I was starting to think it got lost.
Thanks again!
Will you ever sell any trains? I’ve been looking for model trains but I never find deals like you and since you have so much do you ever plan to sell some? I’d buy them
Glad you like the Alaska Rotary Snowplow, Harrison. I thought about choosing the BNSF plow, but don't recall you having much in the way of Alaska on the layout, plus it would really pop riding the rails. So many considerate subscribers sending awesome gifts to a very deserving model railroader -- thanks to all of you.
Thanks for sharing. 👍🐾👍
Thanks again David, I really like the set!
@@SMTMainline when I saw the Harrison's Hardware truck, It had to be yours.
Always nice to wake up on. Saturday morning and start it off right with a fresh SMT video.
The Scale Trains would have been the showstopper, but there were many other things that caught my eye.
The Delta Lines box car may have more significance than you think. This was the railroad of the late Frank Ellison who was an early pioneer in model railroading. His two rail O scale model railroad was featured in the Model Railroader in the early years of the magazine. He would rank up in the notable names of model railroading of people like John Allen of the Gorre and Daphetid fame.
I did notice the Southern Crescent Limited Pacific from Tyco/Mantua. This locomotive was paired with matching Southern passenger cars which are some of the hardest to find.
As for the soldering iron, the strange tool to with a plunger is a vacuum desolder tool for removing solder. Just push in the plunger, heat the solder joint, and push the button. The older solder should be removed. If not, just repeat the process. Also, I was of many that was pleased to see this soldering iron as someone who works on electronics. I save the "Big Guns" such as the current tool that you use for big jobs only that need extreme heat. Also, for using soldering irons, the best way to keep them in place is to use an iron holder. I have an old Radio Shack iron holder with a sponge to keep the iron from moving around. Hopefully, this was included in the package.
There are many other cool things, but I need to start to wrap this up. I did see some items with Mehano motors. Have you ever thought about doing a motor replacement based on the videos from Scott Rails using the AliExpress motor? I have a couple locomotives that I plan to do the replacement. This may make a good video on the channel showing the "Proof of Concept" idea.
Well, I could mention more, but this post is long enough. So, this is a great video, and congratulations on the mail call items. Hopefully, they will lead to more content.
Thank you so much for all this information. I haven't seen the video on the Ali Baba motors however years ago I upgraded some Mehano locomotives with skew-wound 5 poles I found super cheap on eBay.
I agree about Bowser. They don't get talked about very much, but everything they make is great quality and a lot of the trains they produce are oddball offerings that make for interesting modeling.
They seem to be the brand that everyone kinda likes but rarely buys.
Un known tool is a solder sucker. It's helpful for removing and desoldering components from circuit boards
You need a desk top spring holder for that pencil soldering iron, its a must have - lets you sit your iron in while hot and works much like an old fountain pen holder, you might like the iron better with a proper holder
I've seen those but space is of the essence which is why I never bought one.
the end running session was like an outro for a documentary. Add some text and you have a cinematic masterpiece.
I'm amazed at how you know the classifications of all of the different types of locos that you have. I used to have an old HO scale Burlington Northern set where the headlight was in the center.
I'm better with knowing brands than types of locomotives but I try.
@@SMTMainline well, you do it well..... I couldn't tell you one type from another.....lol
Great video as usual. I enjoy these unboxings and testing of equipment. It is the reason I sent you a small box so long ago that I can't remember exactly what was in it. I think it was five older locomotives. Hope it didn't get lost. I'm jealous that you have that working snowplow and power unit. I remember the video you did with the train outside in the snow and it may need a revisit next winter. The running of the trains at the end with all those locomotives was new and I LIKE IT! Best train videos on the internet.
There are a few smaller boxes that still haven't been opened so hopefully its one of them. I think I will make another snow plow video but I'm not so sure I would wanna use something this nice lol
@@SMTMainline Wouldn't be great if the thing worked like the real ones. You have to see for my sake. lol
Your Videos Made Me Get Into Model Trains And Helped Me Get Better At Modeling
That's awesome, it means a lot to hear folks like yourself have gotten into the hobby through these videos.
Haha! 33:54 is probably my favorite part of this video. It appears you have a ghost haunting your model N trains!
Yeah, that was funny.
wow for a tone of stuff. some of it will keep you busy on the work bench. that snow plow.. dam, OVR has one in Conrail.. it is going to be hard not to get that now.
It is DCC ready with a 21 pin plug, Dave.
Lots of cool stuff! The glitter perpetually stuck on the hands after opening the one package made me chuckle for whatever reason.
What a joy to see. The train running towards the end is just beautiful. Good one mate.
back again for the amazing content! still the best model train hobbyist and ive learnt alot from watching. keep being amazing bro! (edit my names also patrick so i found that funny lol)
Hello Harrison, I'm a new youtuber and I've posted 2 videos! Love yours videos and I've been watching since 2023 (not very long) but you've helped me through tough times by taking my mind off the hard things and more on my Railroad!
Congrats on your first ScaleTrains locomotive. As an owner of many, I can say you’re in for a treat. They’re also very tidy to work on compared to Genesis and other high-end brands, especially the shell removal process, very well engineered stuff
My first ScaleTrains was their Hiawatha but this is my first RivetCounter. I'm surprised to hear they are easier to work on, it seems impressive considering the detail.
@@SMTMainline the shell removal is easy compared to a Rapido or Genesis I have found. No hanging wires to accidentally break
2:31 Because the Delta Lines is a model railroad. Starting about 30 years ago the NMRA had a series of freight cars made up to commemorate some of the legendary model railroaders of the past. What you have the 1994 car: Frank Ellison's "Delta Lines"
Glad to see all these goodies are finding a new home! The gods are smiling on you🙂
I love the Rotary Snowplow Some of those are still in Service Today
Took me forever to remove the old brushes from the flooded engine, you got a lot of awesome looking model trains! The moment I get the old screws out, the engine will get done quickly, love your layout as well!
Flood locomotives are their own breed of trouble. Getting them working is satisfying though.
@@SMTMainline True, this is basically only the engine of it, looks decent though! Gotta get the old rotten screws out, somehow.
I’m looking forward to the DCC tutorials. Great show, from Australia.
Serenity, we have runners! Cheers from eastern TN
Nice unboxing. I definitely think getting used locos is better cause it’s more cheaper than getting it brand new.
Very nice haul you got Harrison!
The runaway train consist is Alaska railroad units. Technically.
They were rented from ARR to film and were painted dark brown or black to contrast the snowy backgrounds, and the director wanted a black and white feel. ARR didn't want any of its logos shown, but eastbound 12 that gets the caboose run through had the old school black with yellow striped paint scheme on the lead switcher.
Good evening Harrison, another fantastic video. The parade of trains at the end with everything running at the same time was beautiful. Take care, Jeff.
Thank you very much!
Very nice haul Harrison. Looks like that Bowser Soo Line is a patched Duluth South Shore & Atlantic locomotive. Soo Line borged DSS&A and since those Baldwins were fairly new they kept their original paint and Soo just put Soo on the long hood.
Possibly that U25C can be modded to run on an Athearn chassis and the side frames modded to fit.
Finally take a look at your local hardware store as they sell stands for soldering irons. The one I have came with it's stand but they're effectively a weighted plastic base with a funnel shaped spring thing and a depression with a sponge you can dampen to clear solder/flux build up from. Very handy to have and minimizes catching a hot iron with your gentleman's bits.
That PRR sharknose was doing a Carolina squat (when the front is high up and the rear is low to the ground. Great video SMT!!
Just what the railroading industry wants lol
@@SMTMainline I was laghing so hard when I saw the Sharknose squating!
Yes, that Mehano Chattanooga 917 is the last Tyco Chattanooga locomotive ever made, manufactured by Mehano for Tyco, and only produced in 1991-92.
It's too bad it didn't continue. I think most people would have liked TYCO products with higher quality drives.
@@SMTMainline I think Tyco's reputation had been destroyed by that point - if only they had tried that earlier!
@@SMTMainline There were a few diesels made for Tyco by Mehano though - they were basically rebranded AHM/IHC locomotives, but some had graphics unique to Tyco - I could give you some tips on how to spot them, if you like.
i love the rivet counter locomotive. it looks amazing on your layout.
I like that supertanker. Wild car.
28:26 The prototype locomotive for that model is the ALCO C-628 where C stood for Century, 6 for the number of axles, and 28 referrering to the horsepower in hundreds (2800 though the prototype was shy of that by 50 due to limitations of onboard DC generator technology)
29:35 The Rivarossi Burlington unit is based off the GE U-25C which was a contemporary prototype when the model was first introduced in the 60s. There might be a gearbox issue as the motor inside the cab drives a shaft which goes to a gearbox that then has output shafts on either end to drive the respective truck (also the body screws can break the mounting posts in the body if over tightened unfortunately)
Wow! That BNSF was a beauty. Glad you enjoyed your early Christmas Harrison! 😂😂
Your videos are more creative than before. Nice.
The last scene on this video with 6 or 8 trains running was well done.
Thanks for the good entertainment.
Thanks, I've been trying to up the quality over the last couple years so I appreciate hearing that.
Great choice of music and can´t wait to see the super long super chief with the dakota pipeline tank car
Thanks. I need to do an overhaul on that locomotive.
Lots of nice stuff. Another Midnight special video.
Great video this time! Lots of cool stuff along with great laughs. (Live long and prosper steam engine, the super tank car pulled by the rotary snowplow and the traffic jam run session!). Take care up there and enjoy spring.
You finally got a Scaletrains locomotive, Harrison, and a Rivet Counter at that! A little history on the prototype, its known as an ES44C4, which is a variant of the ES44AC that uses 4 traction motors as opposed to 6 on the standard model. Only BNSF and Florida East Coast rosters these locomotives (although BNSF by far rosters most of those built). The locomotive has extra cylinders on the truck side frames, which allows it to lift the center axle of each truck to put all of the locomotive's weight on the powered axles. According to GE, the locomotives were supposed to meet or exceed the pulling power of a C44-9W or ES44DC. Unfortunately, the design was alot better on paper than it turned out in real world situations as the locomotives suffer from excessive wheel slipping, especially on wet rail! It also doesn't help that BNSF puts these things on trains they were never designed to haul. As for the Scaletrains model of this locomotive, I can say from experience this locomotive is exceptionally powerful, able to handle between 50 and 60 cars on level track. Nice haul overall, Harrison!
I've had a ScaleTrains locomotive since 2013 - my Fox Valley Hiawatha was made by them but this is my first Rivet Counter. Thanks for the info on its real world counter part, I had no idea they were prone to wheel slipping issues.
Thank you SMT for the amazing content like usual!
Thank you!
@@SMTMainline omg you responded! (I'm so happy RN)
Amazing haul 👍👍
That orange and black BNSF is AMAZING! I want one of those so bad! Soo cool amazing video
Yeah, its a beauty.
For Christmas this past year I was gifted that rebadged Mehano Chattanooga loco. No surprise, it runs very well.
They are great locomotives. They don't have the most details or pulling capacity but they are super reliable.
The new Rock Island opened up in 2017.
They currently operate in Mississippi, Kansas ( via Subsidiary Ottawa Northern) and Oklahoma.
SMT - As Gary Sprandel said, the Soo Line Railroad bought the Duluth, South Shore, & Atlantic Railroad in 1961. In 1962 the Soo Line Railroad started painting its diesels red with a very light gray (looks white) and black lettering. A friend of mine had the TYCO Cresent Limited 4-6-2 Pacific and could pull very long trains with it! The cylindrical device that came with the soldering iron is a vacuum desoldering pump and is used with the iron to remove solder. The " hunting tower " is actually part of the Revell sand house and that boxcar converted to a building was also made by Revell. The Baltimore & Ohio GP7 is a dual service locomotive - the "torpedo tube" air brake tanks on the roof made room between the trucks for the fuel tank and a water tank for generating steam to heat passenger cars. The REA car is actually an Express Refrigerator car and was commonly used in passenger trains and mail & express trains (The "Pullman Green" color) usually after the locomotives, or sometimes at the rear end of a train to be dropped off enroute. This car's use was to transport sea food across the country from the Gulf Coast.
Thanks for all the history.
What an amazing new collection that you have, Harrison! You are beyond lucky to have as many locomotives as you do. Where do you keep them all? 😂 You’re going to have an amazing time repairing and cleaning all of them, but I know that won’t be an issue for you! This was certainly a very interesting video to watch, and I am amazed by everything that you received! Keep up the great work, Harrison!
- Storm
I have a brand new storage area which I think will be perfect for them :)
These unboxing videos are great SMT I especially liked that bnsf scaletrains locomotive
It sure is a beauty!
Amazing video cant wait to see you repair the ones that don't work!
Thanks Harrison for another great video, enjoy watching them run.!!!
So cool to see the other trains running at the same time, I too had two trains with cars running a day before watching your video....Thanks
Geneseo, IL is like a hours drive from me, so I may have to find that store.
3:08 Roco has a crane very very similar to this one, I hope you have some matching flat cars to rest the crane arm on, I love service trains.
21:38 yes SMT that's exactly what that is! Those are the best TYCO locos that you can get (reliability wise) other than mantuas of course
Also, don't forget to set up the stand that came with your new soldering Iron. It will hold it in place securely so you don't have to worry about it rolling off the table and burring you.
That's a great feature. I like how it uses less space than regular soldering stations.
Rock island has a few power units in the blue and white that they retitled "reborn blue" in reference to it being called "bankruptcy blue" when they closed up. They always had the best looking units
Most of the Aristo Craft HO trains were Rivarossi back in the day. Aristo Craft is/was a house brand of Paul’s Hobbies of NYC
Locomotives from scale trains has realistic sounds and more scale trains produce is really well made I like it I know I don't have a set but still it's cool a lot of trains can't wait for another unboxing
That's good to know.
You could use the motor out of that Rivarossi GE to fix the Blue Goose!
The motor and linkage were not the failure point with the Blue goose this time. The oil pan had a loose bolt which allowed the driving gear to fall out of place.
What a nice Suprise Harrison, you never know what you might find useful. The Chino Backshops custom
decals of Arizona copper mines are very interesting to me. I've been to _all_ those locations with my interest
in the copper industry and it's railroads. May have to get me some. So thanks to that follower.
This is one of those times I wish I lived next door so I could come over and raid your new arrivals. I got one of
those Revell building kits when I was a kid for my then layout. They still hold up.
The Soo Line Baldwin DRS 6--6 1500 is pretty sweet. I have a few in SP and a brass one in Trona. Bowser is good
stuff, have done quite a few locos important to me. The upcoming Alco C415 units are a favorite.
Rotary plow pulling the giant tank car, only in the mind of SMT management. I need a nap after that epic unbox.
PS there was a shop you visited that had a huge selection of Locos, like more than I'd ever seen in one
place. Can you refresh me on the name? I want to see if they have something odd I'm looking for. Thanks.
Thanks for the comment. I think the shop you're referring to is Van Horne hobbies ua-cam.com/video/3xXqqFhdR1c/v-deo.html&t= if not it might be the Red Caboose
@@SMTMainline I think that is it Harrison! As I suspected they have no web page, are just on
facebook. (I don't do facebook) and I don't see an email. So I think I'm going to call them with
the item I'm looking for. Question, since I'm calling into Quebec should I ask for an English speaker right when they answer? Or should I just ask in english and see what happens? What is the polite protocol eh? And thanks! 🙂
I've been watching your channel for several months and I am fascinated by the skill you possess in repairing the items that are sent your way. I was wondering why people so generously send these items to you? Perhaps as a relatively new viewer of your channel I missed an earlier explanation you might have given as to why people send these items to you. To help quench my curiosity, can you please explain the seemingly unending generosity of your channel watchers? Perhaps you give them away after you repair them. Thank you for your reply.
I've been told by many folks who have sent things in its because my videos got them back in or into the hobby. It seems to me like quite a big thank you - a comment explaining this would already be more than enough to me but I appreciate the generosity. I've already done some giveaways but I intent to do more in the future as a way to pay it forward.
I have that exact same n scale dummy f unit! I believe it came with a warehouse kit of some sort, although I don’t remember what brand.
Hi Harrison i was wondering is it alright to us you layout videos to help create my n scale l am building this summer. I was also wondering if you had any advice on how to get stuff for it.
in my opinion the best place to get trains for n scale is kato, they make some of the best trains. They run incredibly smooth 10/10 recommend. If you are looking for track you can pick up some pretty good Buddles of track at train shows for a good buck and you can also find locomotives and rolling stock pretty cheap there if you're on a budget. Ebay is also a good resource for cheaper n scale stuff. I hope this helps 👍
Mega lot of locomotives in N and HO scale.
You 🐱 is nice.
My dog Scooby Doo is good with you 🐱.
Love your ❤❤ SMT videos ! You do a great job rebuilding and work on theses locomotives and diesels ! And I love that you get the trains working again and put it on your train layout ! what do u prefer dcc or old school dc? also any idea y sooline f units and gp7's in the classic red and white cost so much even for dummys

I prefer DC for the simplicity. It's not to say DCC is bad though, for club layouts its an excellent system.
WAW!! Christmas!!! Nice score!
I really liked this video!
Great packaging
What is the name of that pen you use to clean commutators? I need to try and clean the commutator on my Ohio 4-4-0 steam engine. its in a bit of a rough shape. had to replace the rive shaft from the tender to the engine because it snapped when it fell off the table. It runs, but the motor stalls out from time to time, and despite cleaning the contacts on the tender(which is where it gets its power) it stalls out pretty quickly, and takes a high amount of voltage to even keep going after I get it to go again. Tracks are cleaned pretty decently. But aren't perfect.
It's a fibreglass pencil, you can find them online or at hardware stores.
Yeah, the Mississippi delta railroad! I’m in Jackson, so I’m not in the delta area, but my dad knows the guy who owns it because they were in the national guard together. And I believe Atlas made a replica of it.
I love the BNSF engine, it is beautiful!
BTW PA stands for Pennsylvania
Yep
Have you ever wanted to travel to the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay, Wisconsin and do a video tour on the locomotives they have on display there?
To be fair with you, the BNSF es44ac was what I liked the most.
You should try the snow plow on real snow
I dunno if I wanna do that on something this nice lol
Hi SMT, what are your thoughts on some well made dcc locomotives. I finally got a Bachmann Thunder Chief set and now I have Dcc on my layout. I think it's pretty cool but I would like to get some more Dcc loco's. P.S. Would you be willing to get red of any Dcc loco's? Thank you
Most modern DCC brands are pretty good, a bit on the pricy side though.
How many locos can you run on your layout and how did you get the locos to not run into each other when they where on the same track?
Around 9. I did a short where I did that test.
@@SMTMainlineok thanks
24:56 Nice Soo Line AS 616 (ex Duluth South Shore & Atlantic DSSA)... I believe it's DC/DCC Sound. John
Be ware of that 1st gen Bachmann spectrum f40! in addition to its split chassis, it has a rear truck that is shorter then the front one due to mounting points. I know this as I had a few of them back in the day and never had a good one!
I'll keep that in mind.
CRIP 4305 GP38-2 - later MP 2243 then UP 2243/743 and GMTX 2115
Harrison what in the prison heck is that a razor on your soldering iron 😂
I dunno, it was a free extension included with the iron.
FINALLY HE HAS A GEVO!!!!
I think my AC44i is also a Gevo
Not sure if you're open to the idea, but if you have no use for that semaphore Would you consider passing it on? I could make use of it.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Love the parade of equipment at the end. Very nice.
Wheres you got the SP 4449 american frendoom???
Its in the freight yard on the other side of my layout.
That N-scale Bachman Southern Pacific A + B set? They are in what was called the "Black Widow" paint scheme, and usually used for overnight freight service. Just thought you might want to know. Otherwise, just tell me to shut the heck up.... 😝
Whoo hoo
Yes sir we early for this one boys
This is a moment in history… SMT has a SXT product
I have a Hiawatha made by Scaletrains but this is my first Rivet counter.
@@SMTMainline fantastic. Amazing video, I have that exact BNSF ES44, but with sound. It’s a lot of fun to have a good detailed model once In a while
Don't know if it helps, but at 11:20, the F unit is made by Del Prado as one of their "Locomotives of the World." I have one myself. Cheers!
I haven't heard of that brand before. Thanks for sharing.
Nice haul. I have the same Chattanooga locomotive with the top head light.
What an awesome lot you got. Some of those locomotives I haven't seen myself. Such as the later Clementine loco that basically Tyco rebadged a mehano. You know as much as people bash you for that big soldering iron.. wherever it was made it last a lot longer and has better quality metal then the junk that they make today. I had it where I spent some extra money on a soldering iron and the tip started to warp... My mom used to have a wells brand and that was something from the 70s and worked great. Sometimes certain people like that need to get a life.. enjoyed the video
PRR FOREVER BABYYYYY
Pretty sure that little box on stilts us a side line sanding tower.
You should do a reaction video of fans layouts
