One of the low key impressive things in this episode is how Matt continued his normal dm tasks but still managed to accurately recall who said what so he could mimic it as Kiri the entire time.
@@meph2473 He's also mentioned in his DM Tips series that he uses a check mark system when they do something either very in-character or meta-gamey to add or subtract essentially social exp. It seems this campaign is more milestone instead of exp, but he may be also notating those things
People can do that by improving their memory recall skills, by learning a couple new things daily, and typically reading books is good food for thought. 😆😋 Seriously though, Matt writes the campaign, he's written books, and he's read thousands more. And that's probably not all of the factors contributing to his impressive recall skills. My point is---and really---I think you guys knew this, but Matt is incredible at this DM/GM thing. I'd be really impressed if he could recall exact damage for almost every encounter, but there are limits to being human. @@nite012 That's... actually disappointing. What benefit is there of them knowing if their characters don't? None, except for metagaming. Why agree to clear the table to just backtrack on it later? Does he also encourage them all to watch their solo encounters with him?
@@Ailieorz i think it was only for caleb's backstory. liam said in talks that it'll be quite redundant to relay the entire story in-game to the other characters (esp if it'll happen with one or two characters at a time again) and would disrupt the flow of the game. that's why he encouraged the others to watch it. he also kinda regretted not seeing the other cast members' reactions at the table but was grateful that matt agreed with the experiment.
Yeah, I gotta agree with some of the other comments; I feel like Caleb being apprehensive in returning this Godly item to a complete stranger was the right thing to do. Beau and Jester flaming him left me a bit salty.
Matt about Mark: "He is like my brother from another mother". Me: "He is probably exaggerating because the guy is also a DM. They may be just good friends." Mark describing a Fireball: "this green flame magic COALESCES" Me: "Definitely his brother from another mother!"
I believe the actual quote was "Brother from another Motherland", your point is still valid, not trying to say anything other, just felt an urge to clarify.
Mark's Levitate clutch attempt at 2:06:10 is so smart. I love how excited Matt gets at it. Like an old master getting surprised by some young person's new trick. d&d is so cool
Why are people acting so agressively to Caleb? Checking that an absolute stranger with a very strong desire for a very powerful object is to be trusted sounds exactly the right thing to do. I cant. this episode is just.... why? like, even Cali was on Calebs Side. I hope that look of frustration on Liams face was more Caleb but it looked like real frustration.
eh its both, though due to them being experienced actors, they are able to separate their frustration with the frustration of the character after the fact. It was an argument, and when you are in the argument you get heated, the important part is to be able to let that go once you step out of the character.
Definitely would have been real frustration for me :P Making a logical deduction and having everyone tell you it was stupid and wrong and inconsiderate, and then have someone unload an entire insulting rant as they talk down to the character you made. Gracious, group conflicts are one thing but I'd be pretty sour for the rest of the session after that. Props to the whole group for being able to separate in-character and out-of-character during stuff like that.
@@aetherwise2159 As someone who loves VTM, being capable of separating yourself from in-character conflict is essential for a good session. So you've got a character who is descended from a specifically evil kind of dragon. And they have a tendency to be overwhelmed by that draconic nature. And they admit to having done some seriously evil shit as part of a cult dedicated to one of the great forces of evil in the world who is also draconic. Sure let's give them the bowl without checking their intentions. You know the bowl. The one that lets you commune with said evil draconic god when you fill it with blood. The evil bowl. The bowl specifically for evil. That bowl.
@@naturalone6529 I had to stop the video and take a breather. I got so mad at them for railing him about this. He didn't even say she couldn't have it. He literally just wanted them to take some time to check her intentions. Then on top of that, Beau gives him some bizarre and seemingly unrelated rant about his trauma? Jester annoyed me, but at least her comments made sense thematically. Idk, I just had to step away for a bit. Yikes.
Quite frankly, I don't think Beau had any right to throw Caleb under the bus like that. Caleb told her what he did in secret with the trust that she wouldn't speak of it again, but she used his lows against him all because he was being cautious about the safety of the group. He doesn't really owe any trust to a stranger, especially in the situations they get into, and the danger of this item honestly is fully deserving of careful treatment. Relying on the words of a stranger isn't safe at all, so I think the team's hostility towards Caleb is completely uncalled for.
It also shows that he shouldn't have put his trust in Beau to begin with. If I were in Caleb's position, I would never tell Beau anything personal ever again because she's the kind of person who uses it against you.
I know! I was like this is crazy - Beau is saying well if we make mistake we learn from it. Caleb is trying to explain this bowl might be the medieval fantasy equivalent of the nuclear launch codes so maybe let's not hand them over to the suspiciously helpful stranger that popped in 10 hours ago

Like, the lesson to not blindly trust someone and that there is nor harm in being cautious especially that you have a Zone of truth spell? (Which costs you nothing) That same lesson you don't need to learn because you are already applying the moral of the lesson right now by double checking Cali?
No, see, Caleb was "trying to control the situation" which is completely unimaginable so instead Beau took the bowl from him and controlled the situation. It doesn't matter that they could take 12 hours to make sure it wasn't going to cause evil, mayhem, and deaths across Exandria as the Scaled Tyrant who's bent on the destruction of most mortal races is empowered, Caleb can't "take control of situations." Only Beau can do that. And why not just take a gigantic risk with an unknown person who has evil dragon blood running through their veins that literally moments before lost control and snarled and threatened Beau? When someone snaps at me, like a rapid dog for instance, I immediately trust them. We can always just run around Exandria trying to stop the Cult of the Caustic Heart AFTER their evil plans came to fruition and they killed potentially hundreds of people and destroyed civilization... why bother taking 12 whole hours. Aint nobody got time for that! Easily the dumbest and most cringe worthy moment of the series and it's all based off of Marisha using out of character influences to dictate Beau's actions... or Beau is just completely oblivious to literally everything that led up to that point.
I totally agree. She's talking about learning a lesson about something he's informing her about. I'ts like a teenager beeing told by their parents that something clearly could go wrong based on their knowledge and reason and still choosing to go on with it. It's immature behaviour that I do not think meets the description of who her character should be. Poor character playing, I think. I loved Cali for actually being the only smart person there beside Caleb and Nott, and agreeing with Caleb's choice and even defending him.
Yeah that whole interaction was absolutely stupid. I was kinda frustrated but humored with Nott for hiding the Bowl but then realized why he did it when I realized that Caleb would inspect it. It was the only wise thing to do. And as an ex-cultist/brainwashed person Caleb has some really hard earned wariness and wisdom about evil stuff and liars. As someone whose been a vagrant and has seen the hard sides of the streets he would naturally be untrusting. M9’s knee jerk over the top hatred of Caleb’s obviously wise decision was so hard to sit through. I do like how eventually in C3 Matt uses this collective naïveté to eff them over. Besides that Beau’s use of platitudes and false wisdom bombs is so annoying. The “we’ll learn from that if it happens” line was infuriating. Tbh if I was playing Caleb I would have blown up on her and said “I DID learn from it. When I trusted a man who convinced me to murder my family”. Like shit, Beau, way to take Caleb’s trust in confiding in you and shit on it. Beau is trash. Still love M9 so far but they are hella dumb at times.

Yep. Beau is my least liked character this campaign so far. Just an asshole for assholes sake. Keyleth was my least liked last campaign. Terrible decision after terrible decision and was always pissed every time something did not go her way. Her reaction, distrust and treatment of Kema, a paladin of a good and highly regarded god in the world and a friend of one of their most trusted friends and allies, Allura Visoren, in favor of an outcast denizen of the underdark nearly made me stop watching as it was just so out of place. It made me hate the character a lot and she continues to treat a lot of characters poorly over the campaign. To be honest I wish Marisha and Ashley (she is gone too much and to be honest does not add much of anything to the show when she is there) would be replaced by Will Friedle and Ashly Burch. Would have a vastly improved game and show as both of them are just better. I however know this will never happen but I can dream.
@Fallstar they will never replace her for the fact that she deals with a lot of the behind the scenes stuff for the company as well as her being one of the few players who actually takes diligent notes.
wow this comment thread is harsh, but it's worth remembering that this is a group of best friends who had been playing dnd together and suddenly got the opportunity to live stream it and its accelerated since then. they would never replace anyone, just like you would never kick someone out of your party for not being entertaining enough. i'm also assuming that those of you insulting Marisha haven't gotten very far in the series, as Beau's character develops immensely in upcoming episodes and her asshole-ish actions are in-character. yeah, not sure if that was just lost on Marisha, or its just that she's acting that beau is just kind of like that in general. It does make sense for her character to act like that, creating a bit of drama and what not, makes sense, its not like they have deep rooted connections like the first campaign, they are a bunch of misfits who have only known each other for like a month at this point.
@@lobear3074 I suspect its acting :D She pretty much immediately admits to Fjord she was in the wrong. It's possible she got lost in the character, but that is still acting in its own way I suppose.
God I hope Matt really plays into the party's blind trust for "friendly" characters in future episodes to teach them a lesson. Calebs idea was solidly reasonable. Their argument against it was... feels before reals for someone they don't even know? C'mon. I was desperately hoping that Cali was secretly evil... lol
This isn't a situation of blind trust in NPCs based naivety like Clarota, or blind trust like the Trickfoots. This is a guest PC with no reason to be distrusted, other than her seeking a magical object; something Caleb is guilty of himself. That doesn't automatically presume she wants it for nefarious purposes. Not everyone on a personal quest outside the objectives of the main party is secretly evil, or placed in the world just to be a "gotcha" trap for the party. Caleb projecting his own obsession over magic to distrust someone else is pretty harmful, especially if that behavior cuts off diplomatic solutions in future encounters against actual NPCs, who would probably consider the mere suggestion of magical coercion an act of aggression. That could just as easily be used as a lesson teaching opportunity by the DM. Her mentioning being raised by Tiamat's cult was probably an intentional Red Herring made by Mark to remind the players of the betrayal at the end of the last campaign. So who knows if that just put Liam off or what. Either way, it's not up Caleb to be the magic police. Being suspicious of everyone and approaching every situation with "let's cast magic on them and force them to tell us the truth" is pretty shitty. He could have just asked Matt if he could roll insight to determine if Caleb believed if Calianna was telling the truth or not. That's a 10-20 second question to the DM that would yield the same results as dramatically coercing the party to take a rest, just so he can have his healer waste a spell unnecessarily. There is a difference between blindly trusting someone just because they are nice, and not being a dick to somebody just because they are going about their own business that you are inserting yourself into. Beau and Jester have a right as their own characters to tell Caleb it isn't his business. Beau herself said the hypothetical "then she fucking lied to us, and we take that and we learn that as a lessen for later on." No need for the DM to concoct some punishment for an "unlearned lessen" when there was no lessen to learn from. My point is this, there are two kinds of people: Those who communicate with others and only distrust them with probable cause; and beholders who think everyone is trying to rob them or kill them. Caleb was being a beholder here, and Beau recognized that it was unlikely Calianna was lying. Even with role playing, someones takeaway shouldn't be "boy, we shouldn't have trusted that person who did us no wrong. Now we are going to get back stabbed in the future as punishment for not blindly distrusting everyone."
@@ninboy01 even though it is indeed a shitty, that's what having caution is about. He have already miss read people before, so if he have the option to magic verify someone intention over a device used to talk to an evil ancient entity aka a betrayer god, mother of dragons, that's the actual most cautious play. Cali herself agreeded with it still. "Mr Caleb seems to be the only one that understands how powerful this device is"
@@ninboy01 "This is a guest PC with no reason to bs distrusted" Yeah, the metagaming is part of the problem. "other than wanting a magical item" And being half evil dragon, and being part of a death cult, and admitting to being naive and easily manipulated, and acting aggressive and yelling at a M9 member who didn't even do anything... Definitely sounds to me like someone who should have sole possession of a relic used to commune with evil gods. "Caleb projecting his own obsession over magic to distrust someone else is pretty harmful" I haven't seen a single instance of Caleb projecting his issues on others despite Beau's repeated insistence otherwise. "[NPCs] would probably find the mere suggestion of magical coercion aggressive" I feel like you need proper in-game perspective. This isn't "but if I lend them my pen, they might steal it!" Yes, it's harmful to be that paranoid over petty things. This isn't petty. It's potentially apocalyptic. I feel like most people would practically beg for magic to be used if it could ensure they were trusted (as Cali herself does). A zone of truth (I believe that's what Caleb is referring to. He never got the chance to detail his plan) is not the same as a charm person spell, and I've never seen any negative consequences for using it the way Caleb was suggesting. "it's not up to Caleb to be the magic police" This has such "why do you want to save the galaxy?" "Because I'm one of the idiots who lives in it!" energy. Again, we're not arguing over a ham sandwich. We're arguing over nuclear launch codes. Handing over nuclear launch codes to someone you met half a day ago because "you have no reason to distrust them" is imbecilic. And he didn't say "let's never give this to her ever" he said "we have ways to make sure we can *trust* her. Not merely not distrust her." It's interesting you're at all defensive of Beau's "then she fucking lied to us and we'll take that as a lesson for later on" given the fact that it horrifyingly undermines her entire point. What lesson would they take except to do exactly what Caleb suggests doing? And if they do have to learn that lesson they'd also have to stop an evil dragon god that is only a problem because of actions they took. It really feels like you're ignoring the obvious context and focusing on minute subtext to justify Beau's actions and attack Caleb's.
Gonna join the club in the comments about the annoyance towards the team's reaction to Caleb/Nott's cautious behavior towards Cali. Lorewise it's almost like the lessons Beau learns from her training never stick and she just decides that acting only on emotion is the best way to go 90% of the time, but the clear metagaming others have pointed out that the players instantly trust guests (which has hurt them in the past) and are extremely skeptical of NPC's really makes it hard to work around to fit the characters every time something like this happens.
That's kinda my big issue with Beau and, to a lesser extent, Molly. Caleb and Nott have to constantly bend over backwards to ingratiate themselves and prove that they're trustworthy and they still are met with distrust, but Beau and Molly never even try to do anything like that and they're the first ones to start throwing accusations around. The whole "you shouldn't trust me because I'm always gonna do whats best for me" argument is fine, but it needs to cut both ways. You can't say that your'e untrustworthy, but then turn around and get on somebody else for being untrustworthy, especially when that person has done nothing but try to earn your trust.
Danny Dolan Every criticism towards her character this campaign have had a bit of vitriol attached to it imo but this one I actually think is legit annoying. It truly makes no sense and I don’t think a real person could legitimately act like this if this was a real situation. I’m not saying She’s a bad role player because she’s better than any player I’ve ever shared a table with and almost certainly better than me. I think this was just her either misunderstanding the intention and reason of Caleb or Marisha jumping the gun on a character moment she wanted for her character. I like guests as they add to the dynamic of the party in interesting ways but the meta gaming associated with them is usually not this bad.
@@setlerking I feel you need to hit up your local game store and get out a bit if you've never shared a table with someone who can role play better than marisha ray. She is by no means a bad roleplayer but she is metagamey as all hell and makes out of character decisions that screw the party often and looks to her husband the dm to give her bonuses and let her do tons of extra all the time. If you go out to your local game store I guarantee you every dm girlfriend acts the exact same as her.
@@setlerking you're deluded, Marisha was like this all throughout campaign 1. She hasn't changed, she's just playing a less morally 'superior' character.
Gnadlaf teh Gary My issue is more with Talesin, he seems to focused on doing what is “right” than actually roleplaying. The Metagaming always seems to overtake him. Which sucks because I love him as a person.
I really dont like how beau and jester didnt hear anything that Caleb had to say, he has been with them for weeks even longer than a stranger that they Just met, I am really salty especially with beau.
Agreed. She was just upset she wasnt consulted about it. But consulting the group would have been a giveaway to the half dragon that not too long prior, was rampaging....
Her logic just made zero sense, her plan was to trust her and if she was lying learn that lesson for the future. How about you just have no need for learning that lesson by not making the mistake of trusting her in the first place like Caleb did? Just 0 sense made.
@@a.garcha199 Well Beau as a character is just pretty dense and unreasonable most of the time, and act's as a know-it-all. She's useful in fighting situations, but outside of that not the most helpful, sometimes she makes it even harder for the group to succeed in social encounters.
Beau's made of 92.3% cringe. There's plenty of other things that are amazing in this show, so I'm just the happiest whenever Beau doesn't do much outside of combat.
Caleb: "What if she had been lying to us?" Beau: "Then she lied to us and we learn our lesson for the future." What is the benefit of learning that lesson, Beau? Would you say it's.... PRACTICING FORETHOUGHT AND CAUTION LIKE CALEB IS DOING RIGHT NOW??????
Yeah, this is Marisha when there's a guest. Regardless of what they do or say or what conflict the guest causes, she is 100% their best friend for the entire time, she implicitly trusts them with her life and completely disregards how she built her character. Also, I haven't personally been able to sit through this session because Marisha starts off early with her bullshit, but I'm sure she drank quite heavily in this episode, as she usually does when guests show up.

At the beginning of the Campaign Caleb & Nott: are constantly fighting alongside & helping the group Group: not trusting them and calling them out every other day Cali: is part of the group for like 10 hours Caleb: maybe we should wait to give her this powerful thing until we're 100% sure of her intentions Group: HOW FUCKING DARE YOU
This part stressed me out so badly. Caleb is trying to do everything the group asks, he didn't keep the bowl, he showed his friends, and they trust a stranger over him. Beau just find things to criticize him for and i think if it was real, and not players having to stay in a game, that Caleb and Nott would have left long ago.
@@laynasnow8550 Man I'm so glad other people are thinking what I'm thinking. Caleb has such a good plan for knowing this random person's true intentions and it'd take them 12 hours longer than just giving a super powerful, evil artifact to a random, possibly untrustworthy half-dragon lady. And the group (Beauregard mostly) just treat him as if he's being a horrible dirtbag... Idk what they were thinking when they sided with Calianna over Caleb there. Also, props to Liam for playing it as he did. He responded as if he'd had undue dirt thrown at him for so long he was used to it and to the world disregarding him. I love how he plays Caleb. Also props to Calianna (sorry cant remember actor name) for standing up for him too.
@@laynasnow8550 yeaaa it was pretty clear to me that in one of the earlier episodes that caleb and knott stayted ONLY for the sake of the game. Liam knew that caleb wouldnt actually have stayed but since he is such a great player, made it work.
THANK YOU like holy shit caleb and knott really havent done a single thing to deserve so much distrust. They are the only ones being singled out and being forced to constantly prove themselves. i mean shit, fjord has unexplained dark powers and an oblivious mystery with his powers, same for molly. Yasha just up and leaves for days on end and also has a foggy past and is some sort of divine creature, beau hides literally everything about herself, including joining some secret organization that very clearly are influencing the choices she makes. But no, lets not trust the only two people who keep doing what they can to prove themselves. and for baeu to even admit that being lied to would have to be a lesson to learn in the same breath of chastising caleb for trying to apply that lesson already is just mind numbingly aggravating.
Everyone: "Lets do something different with the next Campaign" Liam and Sam: "Ok, We made characters that wouldn't have fallen for Arkhans Betrayal that easily" Everyone Else: "HOW DARE YOU"
IKR "how dare you make the characters with backgrounds of being betrayed untrusting! "but i guess that goes for beau being untrusting with people she cares about too

@@Albatross0913 YES!! thank you. It was very hard to listen to when the entire time I was like Beau is an ass to literally every single person she encounters but Caleb is "cautious" and they jump all over him....
@@Albatross0913 Y'all. if two characters in a tv show, didn't get along would you blame the actors? just because a character interaction isn't nice and feel good doesn't make it bad.
I was listening and thinking "they're gunna need a stealth check for whispering in the cavern for so long." A minute later: "Everyone make a stealth check."
The second day started bickering I was already annoyed, knowing that they were about to lose their ambush. They deserved everything they got. Since they haven’t learned in the last 135+ episodes, it’s not like they’re going to learn from this either. Maybe my biggest grip, next to just Mariya herself, with this group, is that they argue over a single plan instead of coming up with other plans and it just turns into a shitting-on-others-ideas fest.
Also, the troll that was stalking them throughout the swamp/bog eventually resulting in their paid guide dying. I'm not sure why they chose to ignore the troll that was following them, especially after the DM even said, "it's waiting for a straggler to snag." Like, at least have Nott shoot a few arrows at it to scare it off. The troll knew it couldn't fight a group of 9 people, something else Matt mentioned. It wasn't going to suddenly get aggressive and charge them. I know it was just a generic NPC that Matt planned to have targeted, but still. No intelligence with this lot of roleplayers. They stopped to chat with a dead person when they had a guide and were right near their location.
Caleb’s expression when Nott says his name is Bren. Either Liam told Sam (which I doubt) or it’s just a crazy coincidence. Either way, it was a really great exchange between characters
I believe it was stated in a later Talks Machina that it was pure coincidence, and Liam for a moment thought Matt had told Sam some stuff about Caleb's past for whatever reason. [Spoilers below] Purely coincidence that their names were similar I mean. I know Sam was teasing us with part of Nott's halfling surname.
Idk why everyone attacked Liam like that, like they didnt listen to what he was saying and they weren't thinking logically. Even yelled at him for thinking logically... like wtf I'd be pissed.
This is a prime example of why I really don't like guests in the main campaign. Everyone but Liam, and to a lesser extent Sam, was basically using metagaming as a way to welcome her into the group, and treating her differently than they would if she were an NPC. 'Mark is playing her, so she must be trustworthy'; nevermind these normally untrusting characters met her less than 12 hours earlier and have no reason to automatically trust her with such an evil object.
@@emdm2220 The players know that, the characters don't. The same characters who question anyone and everything they encounter just blithely trust someone they just met, who has chromatic dragon ancestry, and who moments before displayed that heritage by turning on one of their own, with an artifact that allows someone to commune with one of the most evil of the betrayer gods (who also happens to be the mother of chromatic dragons), no questions asked.
If only this was just a funney joke, and not the fate of Exandria resting on the choices of people who continue to be wilfully ignorant about how the gods and the world actually work 😭
I feel really bad for Taliesin, the only thing that he gets to do consistently as a Blood Hunter seems to be reducing his Max HP with his Rites and using the disadvantage sight thing. The enemies keep beating his Save and he hasn't really gotten the ability to use his tracking stuff very often, it feels like he's really being punished. Molly is definitely one of those characters that is way more enjoyable outside of combat.
@@KrisDey-BestGPaccount If I only had what Molly did in the campaign to go on as an indicator of that class' features I would say that it's totally useless.
@@SmoothGuyTO absolutely. I subscribe to the conspiracy theory that a circumstance in the near future was planned by Matt and Tal. SPOILER: I would get my character killed too if I had to be a low level blood hunter, and as it happened, it was BEING a blood hunter that killed him. Love Molly for RP, but he was a waste of time in combat, and you can see it frustrating Taleisin.
I feel like the blood hunter class really weighs heavily on the Lycan subclass in being the only real useful subclass. All the others are subpar especially in the low levels.
Probably shouldn't only be casting Vicious Mockery which is a Tiefling feature that relies on his 11 charisma. He's a martial class playing like he's a caster. Taliesin is a top tier role-player. He's just not a "gamer" in the sense of optimizing his decisions.
It absolutely blew my fucking mind how being CAREFUL with a potential fucking doomsday relic was somehow cause for a completely overblown fucking character attack from Bo. Good god, I disliked her character up to this point because of her abrasiveness but honestly I think this pushed her into genuine dislike territory, which feels very odd to me considering I'm just relaxing and killing time watching people play DnD O.o I mean yea, sure, fuck it. Let's just unleash armageddon instead of just simply casting a spell and maybe NOT unleashing armageddon lol
@@itzplant3196 what part of what he suggested would have been altered by an increased amount of sympathy? The point was a confirmation of motivation. Beau was supporting blind trust and faith in absolute ignorance.
I love how Beau and Fjord' avatars both look bloody and dirty and bruised when their hitpoints are almost down to zero, and then Caleb's looks dirty and messy even when his hit points are at his maximum.
Exactly what I was thinking. I’m watching Campaign 2 for the first time. I keep thinking, “Hey! The fucking Hand of Vecna is out there, on a necromancer barbarian, canonically, in their timeline currently, in their world.” The actors know that, and they try not to metagame, but come on! They know better than to trust guests with powerful, evil artifacts.
Caleb is also the guy who killed his parents, became crazy, and now wants to control time. Even if he was right, him keeping powerful magic shit is a complete cancel. It feels kinda like projection on the character part. He thinks no one with magic should attain powerful objects, cuz if it was him, he would fuck up for sure. Tbh, it's kinda of annoying, I hope he gets better at later episodes
Not for nuttin but Joe was easily one of the all time best guests and a SOLID player with a real understanding of of the game and the mechanics. Love to see him back at the table!
@@ladyhella7560 He's not projecting... he's literally just making sure a dangerous item doesn't get in the wrong hands. He knows people aren't inherently worthy of trust. That's what the whole group has been repeating since the beginning... that nobody is trustworthy, not even M9. But apparently a stranger who's a (former, as far as they know) cult member walking away with a magical nuke is fine?
1) They have made their insight check. They have no reason to overly suspect Cali. 2) They are not a heroic figures. Not their job - not their buisness. 3) Imagine being a guest player in someones campaign. You have literally one purpose for being here. A freaking goal of your life at this points. And then players start doing sh*t like this. Hiding the object of your search from you, stalling time (realistically you are not going to just take a long reast in that area without combat, and you are there for one session only). I would be totally pissed. Props for Cali's player for being as great as he as he was tho. 4)Zone of thruth is not even something you can do. It's something that Jester can do - and she was again that. So that's it, at this point you have even more reasons to stop. Enough.
It makes sense, putting aside Caleb’s personal experiences, Cali admitted to doing evil shit before, admitted that this bowl is used for an evil ritual, admitted that the draconic part of her sometimes takes over. Caleb wasn’t even saying “hey fuck this girl let’s kill her” or anything, he was just like “let’s take a second to evaluate all our options here and explore all our possibilities” and everyone got mad because of it. There was probably a bit of meta gaming (not wanting to spoil the fun of the guest or whatever)
probably because he knows he's untrustable if people get in the way of his ambitions to bend reality to his will. (at this point at least) i know when i watch or read stuff, i have a harder time liking characters that reflect myself back at me too much. so i get his suspicion.
Just hoping they eventually house rule that cats have darkvision, because that's ridiculous. It's not a balance thing either, since owl familiars have darkvision and a special flyby ability, so it would just make cats almost as good as owls... I'm sure this is a whole argument in the community, but mostly when I looked at familiars for my characters, I saw people house ruling to fix stuff like that.
Haha, I'm so glad you pointed that out: thanks! I love glimpses of this side of Ashley. Though I'm not sure anything can match her antics in Liam's Quest 3: Full Circle.

She is the definition of a supporting role. First campaign she was a spotty healer who was really only great for bringing Vax back to life every other session. Now she is just "me hit things hard". Ashly Johnson could play a rock and people would still be ecstatic for some reason.
Going to start my first d&d campaign soon and I hope I can work my way from Ashley level to Sam, Liam or Laura level as time goes on. On that note with 7 people in a party odds are slim that they are all RP rockstars.

People can do that by improving their memory recall skills, by learning a couple new things daily, and typically reading books is good food for thought. 😆😋

Sam's "Caleb also likes to burn his friends"-joke went totally under-appreciated because only he and Marisha were there for the backstory. XD
Actually, on talks machina it's revealed that he encouraged everyone to watch that part of the episode later that week, so all the players know what happened in his backstory, only the characters don't know the info.
@@nite012 LMFAO it makes sense why travis and marisha highfived this episode when beau asked caleb to say fire one more time and kiri kept repeating the word over and over
@@nite012 That's... actually disappointing.

Marisha "Then she lied to us, and we learned lesson for the future"

That same lesson you don't need to learn because you are already applying the moral of the lesson right now by double checking Cali?
She seems to kind of be inconsistent in many moments, such as annoying Caleb at the libraty to leave ASAP because she is bored (after hearing his back story!).

@@chrisg8989 in Campaign 1 Marisha's character was indeed the least likeable for me. Beauregard in the beginning also didn't do it for me, but she became one of my favourites over time.
Beu is great on her own, but her antagonistic side about Caleb is getting really annoying, cause she goes really far with it, even if it means going against something she otherwise would probably do (like using the truth spell with someone they just met, just to be sure of their intentions).

@@adarian If we are talking about replacing, Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Joe Manganiello are also excellent choices.

God I hope Matt really plays into the party's blind trust for "friendly" characters in future episodes to teach them a lesson. Calebs idea was solidly reasonable. Their argument against it was... feels before reals for someone they don't even know? C'mon. I was desperately hoping that Cali was secretly evil... lol
This aged well...

Definitely sounds to me like someone who should have sole possession of a relic used to commune with evil gods.
"Caleb projecting his own obsession over magic to distrust someone else is pretty harmful"
I haven't seen a single instance of Caleb projecting his issues on others despite Beau's repeated insistence otherwise.
"[NPCs] would probably find the mere suggestion of magical coercion aggressive"
I feel like you need proper in-game perspective.
"it's not up to Caleb to be the magic police"
This has such "why do you want to save the galaxy?" "Because I'm one of the idiots who lives in it!" energy. Not merely not distrust her."
It's interesting you're at all defensive of Beau's "then she fucking lied to us and we'll take that as a lesson for later on" given the fact that it horrifyingly undermines her entire point.
Enough.
This might have been said already but it's interesting how so far Cali's backstory reflects Caleb's the most and he's the least trusting of her
That's probably exactly why he doesn't trust her
It makes sense, putting aside Caleb’s personal experiences, Cali admitted to doing evil shit before, admitted that this bowl is used for an evil ritual, admitted that the draconic part of her sometimes takes over.
@@corinnebloom7005 my exact thoughts
Caleb thinks he's a piece of garbage, so would certainly be very cautious of anyone who has a similar background to his.
probably because he knows he's untrustable if people get in the way of his ambitions to bend reality to his will. (at this point at least) i know when i watch or read stuff, i have a harder time liking characters that reflect myself back at me too much. so i get his suspicion.
Part elf, part human, part dragon
Sounds like it was a fun party
For the Dragon, at least
Definitely a bard in the family.
@@bretsheeley4034 i hope I have a bard at my table one day.
I *really* wanna give this a Like but there are 333 and I just can't, I'm sorry ...
The look of terror on Matt's face as he explains how they almost killed his wife's character banishing him to the couch.
Just Yasha, low-key saving the world from Tiamat.
Well, she couldnt save us from the cordecps fungus...but a ancient divine pissed off dragon goddess? No problem.

Matt: The material of the chime isn't wood, it's bones. And the twine is dried sinew.
M9, disgusted: oh god
Ashley smiling and nodding: cool!!
and many episodes later, that smile makes even more sense xD
That legit gave me blair witch vibes, just what the hell.
Haha, I'm so glad you pointed that out: thanks! I love glimpses of this side of Ashley. Though I'm not sure anything can match her antics in Liam's Quest 3: Full Circle.
Just gonna say I watched high rollers before critical role, and you can really tell that Mark has been a dungeon master before because he describes everything so vividly lol
4:04:00 Poor Caleb, he was totally right on wanting to be cautious before giving the bowl to Cali.
i hate how beau trys to control caleb and tries to use big quotes and tries to act so high and mighty like only she can determine what is good, idk why marishas characters try to act like everything is so high and mighty but dont ever figure anything out
I like Marisha but her charactwrs are always so unhinged. Beauregard is the worst so far. Its fine i guess, playing an unlikabke character is part of the story. Every team needs one@natescott1840
Clear through-line to Keyleth's self-unaware self-righteous indignity. Just throwing big clueless haymakers. I don't think it's "just acting".
she fixes herself the very next episode but she had a whole week to think about it. This is like 3rd time she treats Caleb like shit. Caleb was really unfortunate to share his sevret with her of all people. I know some spoilers and BE CAREFUL HERE:
I have no idea how she ends up being with Yasha who is this sweet giant emo angel. I hope it ends up being just sex and Yashafinds someone better.
And I like Marisha, her Keyleth was okay, aside from still sucking at the leader thing after so much shit. Beauregard is who i hate, not Marisha. RP with bits of annoying parts of Marisha just created this monster, i really hope it gets better, for campagin 3 too@@csn583
@@csn583 That's called being parasocial.
So many comments about the bowl but let's talk about the real MVP in the scene ... Yasha. She put an end to the situation with one blow. Bad ass!
She is the definition of a supporting role. First campaign she was a spotty healer who was really only great for bringing Vax back to life every other session. Now she is just "me hit things hard". Ashly Johnson could play a rock and people would still be ecstatic for some reason.
@@thewastedwanderer5787 Not for some reason. It’s because she would be the best rock.
@@doov3537 she is the shiny rock you find while walking so you want to take it home
Going to start my first d&d campaign soon and I hope I can work my way from Ashley level to Sam, Liam or Laura level as time goes on. On that note with 7 people in a party odds are slim that they are all RP rockstars.
@@thorinhannahs4614 just be yourself, don't try to make the game exactly like the show. It won't necessarily will be. Just make it a game with friends, that's all that matters
I’m about mid way though and I just realized... Cali comes from a dragon cult... is looking for a set of 6 bowls... the numbers are slightly off but would you say that this is essentially “Dragon Bowl Z” 😂😂😂
This comment needs more likes.
As Sam would say, I just failed two death saves from that pun.
1:26:52 Calli: "I'm going to stand closer to "Bren".."
Caleb: Visibly flinches
Caleb: We should be extremely cautious handing over this instrument of world ending destruction
Everyone else: You're being unreasonable just hand the thing over
That exchange made me absurdly upset
Beaus response was literally so fucking stupid, it infuriated me
Absurd and frustrating, but probably it was as they were pressed for time since the episode was already 4h
100% agreed
The characters mostly aren't interested in saving the world. They don't want that burden.
Yeah.. also, the guest seemed really nice but I didn’t like Cali.
Cali: Please don’t blame him.
Beau: I don’t blame him.
Caleb: Press X to doubt.
"i dont blame him"
" i do think he means well"
then why tf are you blowing up and belittling him?????
@@Gimbii because Caleb unintentionally smashed her trigger button
@@Direwolf181 And she responds to that by yelling at him for responding to his own trigger button getting smashed - which I would argue he wasn't actually doing at all. Sigh. I like Marisha, but why does she always have to play annoying hypocrites?
@@NoriMori1992 it's kind of the point? Beau was in the wrong they both were. Caleb shouldn't have tried to force Calianna to stay against her will and inadvertently pushed Beau's trauma button and Beau was also in the wrong for how she reacted.
Neither of them are particularly good people at this point (Keep in mind Liam himself fully expected Caleb to go full evil eventually before Character development ht and Beau was stil extremely selfish)i but they do work things out. Plus Beau does grow out of her more selfish bratty nature
Plus I mean Liam and Marisha were clearly having a blast the entire time they were loving the drama
It did piss me the fuck off about how she was treating him, he was just taking precautions, and beau exploded on him, and belittled his history, and his intentions. He essentially understands that the bowl is relative to a nuke to a degree in it dangerous ability, and to be safe for the group and general existence, he wanted to verify Cali, but beau just decided fuck you, youre being shitty because youre projecting. When literally Cali herself then says no i fully understand why he did that, and hes pretty much rightfor doing it.

Mark: “can I have like a d6, anyone?”
Everyone: *here is my entire collection*
Isn’t beau a part of the Cobalt Soul, don’t they specialize in making sure dangerous shit doesn’t get into the wrong hands.
Yeah, but shes a "rebel"~~~~.....
Ikr
Yeah but she seemed calli to be the right hands
So the brotherhood of steel of d&d and beau is Veronica in a sense
Wait...its Cobalt? All this time I have been wondering what a Kobold did to have a series of libraries named after it.
Why do I get the feeling that at least a part of Beu’s baggage is what’s causing her to lash out at Caleb about his baggage
WHAT!?! No way! (sarcasm)
I cant believe they missed the chance to say ”as you look for knots on the tree, you spot one, green somewhat dirty and anxious”
39:25 beau: "say fire one more time"
cali: "fire"
beau: [highfives fjord]
caleb: [slowly turns around to glare at beau as kiri starts to repeat "fire" over and over again]
