To this day I still throw old wood Devils Horse's that are as old as me and I'm old...
One of the best lures ever made.
Haha, your much better than me. My first amd only devils horse is hanging from a tree 🌳branch. Hahah. Lucky.for me the Cabelas a mile from my house has more. Hehe
Jack was an incredible man, and I was lucky enough to call him "Uncle" :) My daddy was his brother-in-law and worked with him in Shreveport (it's also how he met my mama - her and some other gals painted lots of lures in the 80s!)
We still have a good deal of Smithwick lures in my parents' garage; I recognize lots of the ones you showed & remember my daddy using them on Tablerock Lake where I grew up.
Anyway, thanks for the nostalgia! With both Daddy and Uncle Jack gone now, it's the little things like a box of lures that touch the heart & stir up good memories. ❤
Thank you so much for the comment! I would LOVE to film that collection.. .
so many treasures inside the box
Hey brother I turned a friend on to your Channel we both love it he got me a shirt hat sticker lure pack and I can't tell you how nice it is to have found somebody that Embraces the old school
RetroBassin' time!!🍻 💥Happy Independence day!!💥
Thanks, JT…hope you have been enjoying the retro roadshow!
So... im down for a few days with a summer cold 😑. So I have some free time, I grew up in the 80s and 90s pond hopping and watching TNN Outdoors, I looked up the 94 and 95 bass masters classics to watch, one of your videos popped up while I was watching. Currently trying to watch all your videos. I have enjoyed every one !!!
Killer find!! I will be in slidell LA for 2 weeks in August... maybe I will find some gems in some old bait shops
Bacon's is in Schreveport, LA. Just sayin'...
@@RetroBassin 😁🥳
Thanks Chris for the Saturday morning goodness!!!
Thanks for tuning in, Paul!
Stop it! Stop it stop it stop it Retrobassin! You're gonna make me hop on the next flight to LA!!! Lol. Awesome video brother. Damn, such an amazing place. Keep up the awesome work and thanks for the great content!
Wait till I get to Jack K. Smithwick's tackle box...
@@RetroBassin didn't you just go through his tackle box in this video?????
I used my only devils horse two days ago, its hanging on a tree at my favorite pond. Dammit, need to buy another, this time its a chrome one.
Thanks for sharing👍🏻
And thanks for tuning in, Bayou Burner!
Your channel is great, I love the flashbacks to days of long past. I like it so much I have been going back to some of the old gear including boxes. So here is an idea for a video. Tackle boxes. Like Fenwick, Old Pal and Flambou Origins, mergers, buyouts...covering the 50s-90's
Still one of my fav channels on UA-cam ! I knew it was just matter of time before your channel popped off!
Really cool thank you !!!
Thanks for stopping by, Robert!
Another great video. I have a couple old baits I wanna give to you when you come down South. Keep after it my friend.
The Roland Martin Diamond Jim is coming with…I actually already have a Florida box packed.
@@RetroBassin love me some Roland
Email me when you can. Need an idea of dates as soon as you can. Keep books open for you like a 1987 Bass Pro Catalog
Come join us in our live Friday night. 8 pm
A local thrift store has an old Bomber saltwater 1/2oz Jig. (white hair skirt, not rubber) old packaging, but date on the back is 2007. Did I make a mistake not getting it for $1.49??
I'm looking for rebel crawfish in a rootbeer color
Any luck?
Love the eyes on the Smithwick lures
Makes them immediately identifiable, Mike!
The bait shop that I work at just got some Uncle Josh pork frogs in from an old-timer and the first thing I thought of was your channel. Love the videos and I hope more people find your content
Thanks Ryan! We are getting there, on lure at a time!
Love this channel , sever nostalgia kicks in everytime which keeps my attention locked. I have a very old jointed lure that my poppa gave me years ago. It’s definitely made before the newer jointed lures. It has one treble under the belly ,clear see thru with red painted on top. I’ve cleaned it up for duty tmrw , I will comment and see if it’s still working even now. Tight lines bud
Thanks, good buddy!
@@RetroBassin I had a good day ! The lure (swim bait) caught me 3 nice fish this morning , I also got snapped off while using 50 lb braid on a Muskie rod. It was a largemouth bass , but it happened so quickly as soon as my Choppo hit the water just as I had been talking to another fella and his friends that had come from the city to fish , I pulled it and it swam down into the rapids from the calmer water and for some reason my line felt snagged. I pulled too hard and it snapped , but we all had seen the break water moment and then shortly afterwards we had seen the Bass swimming with my Choppo in its mouth right in front of us. I felt bad for the fish more so than losing my Choppo. But im on my 3rd Berkley Choppo already this summer. Just a totally weird encounter , but I still enjoyed myself and I’m less than 100 yards from my cottage. Burleigh Falls Ontario Canada 🇨🇦
Alot of those baits look as if they would still find fish these days, and wow at some of those colors. I would love to be able to just go out and spend a week on the water with those. Im a TVA guy and seriously I promise some of those colors would smash here. Also can I say one word without sounding too pretentious, PATINA, the patina on that whole box was just so awesome and authentic. Loved this one.
Devil Horse = Legend!
Yes, Olaf!
i was read ex-founder of Smithwick gonna trade a lot of unfinished lure blanks and rigs to local fishing shop, for him new tackle.
that reasons so unique and sad, he gonna survive their legacy.
Found your channel a few weeks ago and you have inspired me to start fishing again after about a 15 year hiatus. Keep up the awesome work
Those are some beauty's!! So remember when I said I sent you some soft plastics? Well they're in the mail but I've stumbled across something very very old but in need of a little tlc and figured you should have it Aswell so it's going in the mail Monday 😉 Cheers fella!
Yeah buddy! As Jimmy Buffett said, if the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me.
@@RetroBassin I'm more on the "if we didn't laugh we would all go insane" train lol Cheers fella
I caught a 4lb rainbow trout at a local quarry lake this year throwing a smithwick rogue on my buddy's crappy walmart spinning combo. Hell of a fight, no net.
I would have thought there would be more Devils Horse in that box. My favorite Devils Horse is green with a yellow spot and a black spiral
Me too! I am sure Jack had many boxes, and from what Michael Bacon told me, his favorite may have been a cardboard box. I am sure he’d have more than a single Devils Horse most days!
@@RetroBassin the Devils horse is the first lure i remember catching a big bass on. It was in a farm pond and my Dad hooked it and new it was a big bass and he then handed me the reel. It was a green ambassador 5000 on a Shakespeare wonder rod and the bass was about 6lbs. That same day we had a stringer of bass and when we went to leave for home i pulled up the stringer and all we had was a bunch of Bass heads left. About 5 big snapping turtles ate all of our fish, boy was my dad freaking pissed.
Rouge's are my go to walleye hard bait here in Michigan . Chrome and blue has produced many a double digits fish for me.
Suspending or floating?
@@RetroBassin both depending .... I like to troll the floaters over weedbeds . I think they troll better slow than say Rapala .
Another great video!!!
Thanks for tuning in, good buddy!
Vintage goodies!
Thanks, Alex! Next stop is the tackle box of Jack K. Smithwick, founder of Smithwick.
I was literally walking out the door to one of my favorite farm ponds. It can wait a few minutes...
Maybe inspired you to throw a prop bait!
Maaan. Some of those clear cranks baits do actually work. I was skeptical at first. I have a clear shadrap and husky jerk I use in a muddy farm pond. They catch fish for me!
My grandma used a 737 tackle box for her make up kit lol!
Grandma must have been one heck of a basser!
So retro let’s say the year is 1979 and you can take only one rod and reel and 3 lures and your fishing lake Okeechobee. What ya taking?
Absolutely love this channel. Have a great weekend man
Well. We live on Okeechobee. Imagine you stop by after your fishing day and we hang out.
Have never heard anyone saying anything about no no spinnerbaits.
I use to buy them at H‑E‑B grocery in the seventies when I was in high school
Honestly, I need to get more info on those from Michael Bacon. He used to make the skirts for all the No-Nos!
@@RetroBassin so if you have
No nos in you tackle box would tell people "DON'T TOUCH MY NO NOS"
That blade that looks like an elongated Colorado blade is an Indiana blade. I once read that those two type blades were named for the states where they first appeared or were designed or whatever. I believe the Indiana blade was designed by one John J. Hildebrandt of Logansport, Indiana. Indiana used to have lots of tackle manufacturers but sadly most of them have moved out of the state after being bought up or have disappeared altogether.
Also, Indiana once had many boat manufacturers. Most of these seem to have been centered in the northern part of the state. Goshen is a town that seems to be mentioned a lot. The boat manufacturers that remain that I am aware of are Starcraft, Starweld, and Smoker Craft but there may be others that do not come to mind. Some that I believe are defunct that come to mind would be Steury and Spectrum. Many of the old Indiana boat makers were still around in the 1980's but were gone by the beginning 21st century.
Oh, and Johnson Outboards were first made in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Great story! And I think you’re right…
Hey great vid ! I just picked up a shimano cursor bantam tomatoe casting reel . It's red in color. Would you ever do a show on vintage reels . I'd love to know more about this reel !
I really need to do a rod and reel walk through…
Awesome channel! What’s your favorite discontinued/retro soft plastic bait?
The Ol’ Ben Goober…
Guy in background sounds like Billy Bob Thorton
That’s the man himself, Michael Bacon. He’s a walking lure encyclopedia!
These clear lures are just as old as me
I found some of those clear lures I forgot what brand they were back in the day (the 80's) and of course I put my mom's nail polish all over them to paint. That was pretty dumb.
Hahah same
Indiana blade?
Think you’re right.
@@RetroBassin I'm surprised very little vintage wood baits in that box. Was expecting to see more.
@@DavidSmith-hh3cc Wait till I get to Jack K. Smithwick’s box…that’s Jack A.’s dad.
I had that tackle box! It's made of football helmet plastic.
No wonder they had so many concussions back then!
You didn't go through the whole bottom drawer.
I’ve never seen a Smithwick crank in my life
Honestly, I hadn’t either!
That is a indiana blade
I was looking at the smithwick jerk baits and I thought it looked fermiler and turns out I have one
Fish it old school!
Chrome is great. Black and chrome HJ-6 Husky Jerks have caught me more bass over the last couple decades than just about anything else. Not many giants, but def big numbers of fish. I fish em really hard and fast most of the time. I swear bass will hit it out of instinct, whether they want to or not. They're just programmed to crush em.
How come you didn't finish showing us what was in the bottom drawer
There’s a reason, Carl, oh there’s a reason. LOL
Yesssss.... Im first!!!!!
Same time, same place good buddy!
