Ya, I’m not sure I would have ever wanted to hear anyone sing that but Glen Campbell because it’s always been very partial to my heart. I lived in Wichita when I was a kid and was missing someone very much who just couldn’t be around. And Glen Campbell was so special. You know that even after he could no longer speak that he could still sing??? He was still on the line. BUT I HIGHLY APPROVE MICHAEL! LOL. Excellent job; I don’t want to hear anyone else try it though now; I’m good.
*Quick note on the song “Brandy”; I’ve had to really think this song out for over four decades, because my grandfather wanted me to be named Brandy and then he died right before I was born. He told my parents, “If it’s a girl, you have to name her Brandy. It’s the most beautiful name in the world.”
SO, my name is Brandy. I finally got it and understood what my grandfather meant.
Forget the obvious stuff. It might not be as misogynistic as it sounds. Yes, the world is full of that but the song isn’t actually about anything but HER. Not her tragedy or even her choices.
It’s about her passion, and her character, integrity, and her distinctly unique BEAUTY that was obvious to everyone around her. She was the one you want to be around. (I mean, come on. Haven’t you ever met a beautiful, intelligent bartender and thought, ‘What the he11 are you doing here??’?)
Her eyes could steal a sailor from the sea.
She could have had just about anything she wanted, but she is honest, and RESPECTS honesty. She didn’t want anything but him, but accepted that she never would.
He was honest with her. The heart wants what it wants. At least he didn’t lie to her. Right?
Thank you. I just had to say that because I dig and respect Michael Stipe so much, I just wanted to point out a different perspective.

William Nelson I remember the song Galveston when I was 9 years old . I always loved that song but it was sad . Later I learned it was about someone fighting in Viet Nam . Someone who was in a situation they didn't want to be in . " As I watch the cannons flashing . I just clean my gun, then I dream of Galveston ."

REM covers Roger Miller, The Velvet Underground, that garage band that originally did "Superman." And they do a boatload of country-ish tunes.

Eventually Stipe stopped being such an uber-annoying 'alt-rocker' type who looked down his nose on a lot of brilliant music from before R.E.M. cuz it was too commercial and not odd or underground enough like stuff the band considered 'cool' (Wire, Big Star, Patti Smith Group).
