The reason Home Fries don't like reactors to do Mayday too early is because if you don't know the "role" each member "normally" holds in the group, the performance is underappreciated. Why Home Free singing this song should be impressive: It is sung in the same key as the original (Cam is female), the basso profundo of the group (along with the tenor 1 and tenor 2) spends the entire song singing tenor 1, the baritone sings the bass part, the percussion is amazing consisting of not only beatboxing but foot stomps and hand claps. It is a tour du force for the group. That is why afficionados want people to wait until they are very familiar with the group before watching this video, it's not as impressive if one doesn't instantly recognize what is going on.

Cam’s version is ok but because Home Free has 4 vocalists to sing it I love HF’s version. Tim decided to show off his 5 octave range and sing tenor and Chance showed off his bass. Loved it. Can’t believe Tim can sing that high. Chance was a bass for his other group before he joined HF. Good reaction and it’s one of my favorites of theirs.
Yep. 5 guys. 5 who can sing Tenor. 2 certified bass singers. 1 Basso Profundo. 5 who can beatbox to some degree. 1 who is affectionately called a 'Freak of Nature', and is a World Class beatboxer. They do Covers, Collaborations with Original Artists, and Original songs. NOW you know why they're so GOOD at whatever they choose to do!!

Chance is considered a baritone in Home Free but he was the bass in his former group (Street Corner Symphone). His range isn't quite as wide as Tim's but it's still pretty impressive. And with him in the group, Tim can play around with singing tenor, etc., because Chase can handle the bass. They do an excellent job of swapping the bass back & forth when both take a turn at the lead. Sorry for your loss.
"The guy in the middle" you say? Yeah, that guy opened high and stayed there, even adding the high harmony to the ending refrain that "the beard and glasses guy" was doing. Meanwhile, the "guy in the back" landed ALL of the low notes. Of course, "the guy on the right" and "the other guy in the back" were freakishly good too. Seriously, I kid. Always fun when new people do this song. It is the first introduction into the world of basses can have a pretty huge vocal range. Tim's is the largest but Geoff Castelluci and Avi Kaplan are not slackers either and can get up into low tenor range. And then that the baritones can all sing down to bass if they practice. In Pentatonix both baritones Matt and Scott can do it but Matt's job is to cover bass since Avi left. In Homefree's case Tim just wanted to make sure he wasn't always just stuck doing the bass line so they specifically got a baritone who could sing bass. I would definitely check out Cam's video as well. I had never heard of her or the song prior to falling in love with this version by HF. They actually sing it in the same key, which is pretty impressive. This is by far my favorite by them, their "holy grail". You didn't mention anything about Tim starting out the video, and hitting his tenor range, but I'm assuming you noticed. He doesn't sing any bass in this one, they let Chance show off his bass range instead. He was actually the bass in his last group.

Chance hitting that low note caught me off guard the first time too (I heard it on CD before I saw the video and assumed it was Tim). Your interpretation was pretty close - the original is from a woman who knows she's in a toxic relationship but feels trapped. HF's take on it doesn't quite cover the desperation, but it's a gorgeous blend of harmonies and showcases their individual abilities. I noticed you smile when Rob, the bearded chubby guy started singing. He really has a great vocal device with warbles & wobbly runs. I'm a big fan and Yes, Tim can sing tenor all the way down to the sub-basement just like his friend Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay can. Tim doesn't sound at all like Austin. His tenor has a totally different sound. Could be the recording was off a bit, overlap, not a sound tech.

Your interpretation was pretty close - the original is from a woman who knows she's in a toxic relationship but feels trapped. HF's take on it doesn't quite cover the desperation, but it's a gorgeous blend of harmonies and showcases their individual abilities. I noticed you smile when Rob, the bearded chubby guy started singing. He really has a great vocal device with warbles & wobbly runs. @@Mikki44 Sorry to hurt your little feelings, but I have watched every one of their live videos on UA-cam, Instagram, Tik-Tok in all of those places. I'm a big fan and Yes, Tim can sing tenor all the way down to the sub-basement just like his friend Geoff Castellucci of VoicePlay can. Tim doesn't sound at all like Austin. His tenor has a totally different sound. Could be the recording was off a bit, overlap, not a sound tech.
