Mulan's original motive was based upon filial piety, but then evolved to seeking personal growth. This is why I will always see Mulan as a stronger female-protagonist than Elsa from Frozen. While Elsa was independent from men in the sense that she didn't have a romantic connection nor did the typical 'prince save the princess' arc happen, Elsa spent most of her time *running away* from everything. She didn't know how to undo her spell, nor did she try to undo it. She just decided 'fuck it, I'm gonna hide from the problem and push anybody trying to hold me responsible away'. Anna's tenacity did win out in the end, but she was a hopeless romantic, almost a parody of the typical Disney princess, and quite frankly they lucked out when it came to the 'Love is the cure' bit; Elsa's grief over Anna's 'death' was genuine, but she didn't know it would be fixed through that kind of embrace. Honestly, a good chunk of the female empowerment was accidental due to a last second swap of antagonist roles between Elsa and Hans [Disney had realized Elsa hadn't done anything wrong and simply made her the protagonist]. While many feminists love to praise Elsa, Mulan is in my honest opinion the best example of a feminist character; one who grows as a result of her own personal desire and effort, rather than simply evading the problems that came with her life.
