      I'm going to dismiss the Titanic II proposal as a billionaire's dream, and nothing more.

      I have suggested this many times - there is only one place to build it , and that is at Harland and Wolff in Belfast , in the still existing graving dock where the originals were built .
      The new ship , the 4th Olympic Class liner , should be named Gigantic , so that she is not a recreation of any of the other three , but a new sister - and apt since Gigantic was the name originally intended for Britannic .
      This would create employment in an area of massive unemployment , and then running it as a museum and hotel ship would provide an ongoing revenue stream . With discrete upgrades to meet modern safety standards , she could be made functional , to occasionally go on tour along with Nomadic ; and having the second ship always in convoy , there would be an additional safety factor should the worst ever happen .

    • @derekheeps1244
      @derekheeps1244 Рік тому +1

      @@jdslyman The main problem with Queen Mary , being 87 years old , and counting , is that she is slowly rusting away , and I believe now sitting on the bottom where she is docked ; she is now well beyond her original projected lifespan , and without the sort of continuous preventative maintenance that the Forth Bridge enjoys , it just isn't going to get any better . A new Olympic Class ship , constructed using more modern metallurgy , paint protection , and welding instead of rivets , would have a head start , but of course all such things will inevitably have a finite life . Still a new museum ship could last perhaps 100 years with proper care and attention .

    The 1980 film "Raise the Titanic" (5 years before the discovery) was based on the common belief of the time that it sank whole and because of the depth and cold it would be almost perfectly preserved. The devised an ingenious way to raise it using "airbags"and explosives to release it from the mud. If nothing else, the special effects are well worth the watch, especially as the ship breaks the surface.

    • @AngryCatMan1982

      It's rather difficult to view this movie from a pre-discovery prospective isn't it? We've gained so much knowledge post-discovery that it's become nearly impossible not to criticize the many flaws with the movie.

    My idea for raising ship was styrofoam. Styrofoam is made by mixing two chemical. You pump them into the ship and then they turn into a foam which would force the water out and make the ship float. Never thought that it was practical for something as deep in the water as the Titanic. Plus'n, think of the environmental lawsuits.

    The real question should be how we can preserve the wreck for future generations. The new photogrammetry model is a huge step toward this end. With unlimited money one could use more wavelengths of light and more powerful equipment to see inside the ship, but there is a possible solution to physically preserve it without raising it. We can now get down there to the wreck site, so we could build a massive tank to encompass the entire site. The water is then slowly exchanged for distilled water. If that didn't stop the bacteria you could pump all kinds of nasty chemicals into the tank. No bacteria and no ocean current would go a long way toward preserving it, and RVs can install whatever support members may be necessary to stop currently in progress collapse. Is it silly? Yes. But it would work.
    With the lessons learned from the Big Piece salvaging, it would be possible to cut the wreck into small chunks and raise those. The conservation work required to be able to put the ship back together without it crumbling would be in the hundreds of billions of dollars. So much would also be irrevocably destroyed in the process.

      Titanic is really too deep , but with Britannic lying in relatively shallow water , at a depth of only 400 ft , it could be possible to build a sort of coffer dam around her , not to drain the water , but to provide access with viewpoints for people to see the wreck . Because she is in relatively shallow water , they could even build transparent pedestrian tunnels like the ones in Deep Sea World , so that people could walk around and above the wreck to view it .
      Simpler still , would just be to organise a couple of tourist submarines , such as already exist elsewhere , with powerful floodlights and viewing windows which would take people down to view the wreck from a safe distance , and use part of the fares to aid conservation of the wreck .

    • @derekheeps1244
      @derekheeps1244 Рік тому

      While not generally in favour of looting Titanic , I suppose if people really were thinking of raising more artefacts , one of the most desirable , given that the stern section is already disintegrating so badly , would be to try to bring up just one of her massive reciprocating engines , the two of which were previously visible sticking out of the break in the stern section . With all of the disintegration that has taken place , it might not take all that much to haul one of them out now , and would just need a couple of long winch cables dropped down from a surface ship , then attached by submersibles .
      My main concern is that , while the engines were visible in older photos and videos of the wreck , I haven't seen them in the latest scans , and wonder whether parts of the stern section have collapsed over them ?

    My idea to preserve the Titanic is one I've had for a while now. If we could construct a dome (or domes) that is/are powerful enough to withstand the intense pressures of those depths, then maybe a rig could be constructed, have the domes placed over the two sections of the Titanic, and fill them with fresh/chlorinated water in order to kill all the bacteria eating the metal and that should hopefully help to preserve it? If the domes could have an equally sturdy underwater elevator that starts at the rig, then maybe through pressure control, divers could make it to the wreck without the need of a sub.

  • @MaxmadV8
    @MaxmadV8 Рік тому +1

    Ever since I was a kid I was thinking. Instead of raise it. Why not build a dome or enclosure around it and the debris field. Have it as a museum/preservation. Maybe kill off the iron bacteria to slow the decay. But it is unique so that might be a loss. Idk maybe it's best to allow it to return to the earth. Bit part of me is sad that the captions quarters are now destroyed. And the Marconi wireless system hasn't been recovered due to Covid. That actually really upset me. I hope it is one day recoverd before it's gone forever. People on the future should be able to see and remember. Have it stand as a memorial not a mess of unidentifiable rubble..the fact that you can still identify it over 110 years later Is amazing honestly.

    the titanic, at this point, is so fragile, taking it out of water would probably cause it to collapse on itself, also, to lift it off the bottom of the ocean you'd need to basically wrap it up in something so it doesn't just crumble to bits as the water moving around it tears it apart... and really only the front of the ship, since the back is basically like a split banana peel

    You know, a completely inappropriately sarcastic part of my brain went "Well if you BLOW THE WRECK UP hard enough you can launch all the debris to the surface! That raises it, right?"
    Mindboggling that that was an actual suggestion.
    In seriousness though, aside from the grave considerations, and the issues with how you'd raise the ship so that it doesn't break up further from the attempt (hypothetical timeline where everyone got off safe or something and we have some sort of amazing ocean salvaging tech) - what do you do with the wreck after you've gotten it to the surface? Stuff that's been in salt water that long doesn't like being exposed to air and it breaks apart pretty quickly. There'd have to be a lot of preservation work done, but the ship wouldn't be safe to enter in order to do that preservation work.
    Honestly it'd be cheaper and easier to just actually build a replica of the wreck on the surface if you really wanted to show it off; and leave the actual wreck at the bottom of the sea where, although it is deteriorating, is doing so much more slowly than it would at the surface. We can then use that to inform any replicas or 3D models or whatever, without nearly the risk to both the wreck and existing human life that attempting to raise the ship would cause.

    the best "compromise" in this scenario would be to try to build 3 domes down at the wreck, one for the bow, the stern and the debris field perhaps. all 3 domes could be connected and all 3 have an airlock so that subs can attach to it and drop of passengers.
    also, we can tell that raising the titanic is almost impossible (i would say a portal gun could work better) but what about her sister brittanic in agäis see? she is in one piece, she is in better shape, but she is laying on her side, which means we would have to raise her on an even bottem and then try to lift her up, a similiar method that was used on the costa concordia

    I would just like to see Cunard recognize the amount of interest there is in these old ships and make a new ship or couple of ships that would essentially be cruise ships but designed to be the same size and in a similar style to these historic ships. They could even name them something like “Historic” or similar, as a nod to the White Star Line’s old naming scheme. It would be so much smaller than the ships they use today so they would likely be cheaper, and the appeal of experiencing that type of cruise would generate lots of interest and sales, at least for a while. Maybe they could do a line of historic ships, one that looks like an Olympic class ship, one that looks like the Lusitania/Mauritania, and maybe one or two other notable old ocean liners. The underside of the ships could be all modern with pod mounted motors and all the modern safety equipment installed, but everything the passengers would experience would be vintage or at least appear period correct, even if it has modern internal workings. Then again, those old ships didn’t exactly have all the amenities people expect from a cruise ship today

    1) The book-tremendous, majestic, extremely entertaining, although it is also extremely misogynist.
    2) The movie-one of the worst ever made. Disregarding much of the book's plot as well as key characters. Back then, part of the "studio system" was still intact, meaning that, instead of casting who was best for the part, it was "Who's not on a project this month?" I didn't see it when it came out in theaters because the one local theater that had it wanted 15.00 for a ticket at 2 PM (In that time, movies after 6 PM were 5.50 to get in). I didn't see it until more than a decade later when I saw it at blockbuster (paid 3.50 for the rental).
