BMW M1 Procar BASF - The ultimate flamethrower ?

Whenever I go to the "Oldtimer GP" at the Nürburgring I'm always excited to see this specific car.
That's because it is the one which makes the biggest and longest flames everytime the driver gets his foot off the gas pedal.
On top of that it sounds great too with its open exhaust. :D

i think the big flames are because it has a mechanical fuel injection system and when the driver lets off at high RPM the pump is driven too fast for the amount fuel the engine needs.

Other than discouraging cars from following it into a turn, what is the point of the flames?

tquinn2 It is the tune, it runs rich in the high RPMs to prevent engine damage over the course of a race. When they let off throttle excess gas goes into the exhaust and ignites.

Its more of a fuel setting i guess. Coz not all m1 is throwing fire ball as large as that.

I think the rest of the unburnt fuel in the cylinder comes alive when the pressure in the exhaust decreases and gets oxygen to flame up
