Go to a forum where people sharpen and you will witness groups of people doing that. Or about natural whetstones. Or any aspect of blades and sharpening.
The bit of advice that really helped me here was the amount of pressure to use. I’ve tried so many times to sharpen my Wusthof chef’s knife, and even though I’ve had decent results with the cheap Mercer I bought to practice on, I could never get the edge to take on the Wusthof. Turns out what I thought was decent pressure was just two or three pounds once I checked with a scale! Gave it another go and now it’s back in service. Thanks Brad!

As an European it is really surprising how many people in USA can't drive stick shift... I mean... it is not that hard to be honest. I drove a stick shift car on my first day ever driving within just a few minutes practise.

@@HurrikanEagle It probably is the Boy Scouts thing, they do teach that. But a lot of people who sharpen on the one side do it with the edge coming towards them.
been cut while sharpening before, it's usually better you to edge trailing sharpening so you're less likely to gouge your stone. sharpening towards yourself isn't a huge risk so long as you have the proper grip. and don't have any digits where they can be cut.

the easiest way to know that ur angle doesnt change when sharpening is to listen. if the sound pitch doesnt change, that usually means that ur angle is the same. sorry for bad english

Very informative. I get intimidated even thinking about having to sharpen my knives. Brad describing the angle to hold the knife against the stone was great.
