During the sequence when Mulan gets ready to take her father's armor and disguise herself as a man, you can see dragon imagery throughout the entire thing, to symbolize the great dragon that watches over the family. Conclusion: Mushu was unable to awaken the Great Dragon because it had already left, signifying that Mulan is the Great Dragon that protects her family.
Yeah, I always figured that the spirit of the Great Dragon went into her when she was sitting there on the statue, coming up with the plan at last to disguise herself and take her father's place. That courage alone is the courage of a fierce dragon.

That moment, during "I'll make a man out of you", when Shang allows her to go home, not needing for her father to take her place, and she STAYS, because she wants to prove to herself and everybody else that she can be good at something, that moment gives me goosebumps and make me proud of being a woman. Also, I love the irony on that song. "Make man", but your best soldier is a woman. Just bravo!
I agree but it also brings shame to the family if the family member gets rejected and send back without fighting to defend their country. Which is something that Mulan didn't want to bring to her family either. So she had no choice but to try better
@@alej1778 it surely is one of the factors. But later, when she is alone at the snow and looks at her helmet, she says that maybe she has done all that because she wanted to see someone worthwhile in her reflection. There are other ways to 'be a man' than being male. She lived up to the ideal. Which is why when the time came that he SHOULD have executed her by law, he let her go instead. But for an example of that, look at Kirishima in My Hero Academia, who has on several occasions referred to women as being 'Manly' without having it be some remark about a lack of femininity.
Also, note that Shang gives her horse back, instead of keeping it for the war effort. He may not have thought of Ping as a capable soldier, but he respected him enough to not send him home walking, and was genuinely glad to see him on top of that pole.
Mushu not only is played by the legendary Eddie Murphy but among my favourite dragons ever. *I am the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu* 😂😂😂
I can recite this movie word for word. It’s one of my faves. Fun fact: the voice actor for Mulan is Ming Na Wen and she’s the only actor to complete the “Disney hat trick”. She’s a Disney Princess, in the Star Wars universe and the MCU.
I always loved that they said the way up the pole required discipline and strength. Arguably all of those men had that, but what they truly needed was determination and ingenuity, both of which Mulan embodies
Mulan kind of cheated because every one tried to hold on to the weights with them on the side. She wrapped them around each other and used them as leverage making it much easier. It’s a very good method
@@MoveConsistently I wouldn't call that cheating. They were all given the same tools and instructions. If the correct way to get up pole were from the sides, then surely one of the other men who were all stronger and with more experience would have made it up.

Mulan is my fav Disney movie. Unlike many movies of the same theme, this one goes deeper. The first song is about unreasonable societal expectations of women (good breeding, tiny waste, calm, obedient, fast paced, etc.). Her aunts/matchmaker are trying to make her conform. The second is about the struggles of Mulan with those expectations. The third song flips the script and addresses the society’s unreasonable expectations for the men (swift as rivers, strong as a fire, mysterious as the moon, etc.) and the struggles the 3 men have fulfilling those roles. The army/general is trying to mold them into a specific type of man. The song about a girl worth fighting for shows the combination of those expectations and really what the guys are looking for (a girl who loves them - their scars, their humor, their weight). In the end, what sets the 4 main soldiers (mulan, ling, Yao, Chien Po) apart and wins the day IS they don’t conform. Love it.
Which is why I was upset with the live action Mulan NOT having any of the songs in the movie because each song has a crucial part to the plot, how the characters feel in that moment, and what their goals are. You feel more empathy with these characters because of the songs!! In the Live action Mulan you can't tell how their feeling!!
Technically the symbolism of her cutting her hair it’s more of a western thing to be “masculine”….long hair for Chinese men was actually a sign of masculinity and honor… why do you think Jackie Chan in Shanghai Noon was protecting his hair during fights, and felt crushed when it was cut?
When I was a kid, I was convinced Mushu was my spirit animal and he is still one of my favorite animated characters of all time . My sister and I memorized most of the this movie. 🤣🤣🤣 “I am Yau King of the rock, and there’s nuttin you girls can do about it!” “Ugly concubines!”! 😂😂😂

FYI, Mulan is the dragon that was sent to protect her family, if anyone didnt notice, thats why Mushu couldnt wake the stone dragon up because it was already awake.
4:10 that line is how I felt growing up. This movie was a godsend for young girls in the nineties it was the first time disney actually gave a female character a story of heroism instead of the damsel in distress nonsense.
5:39 - I work in sound design. I can trace my fascination with sound and music to hearing this exact track in the movie. I didn't fully understand story wise the choice that she was making, but I could tell that something important was happening because the music was so powerful and impactful. It still makes me feel some sort of way all these years later.
the emperor is played by mr miyagi ( the karate kid ) just as awesome once I learned that it was so noticeable and obvious just made the movie a little more awesome than it already is!
The voice actor for Mulan was Ming-Na Wen, who was Melinda May on Agents of SHIELD. She gets a cameo in the live action, which is my favorite part about it. I love every role I've ever seen/heard her in.
19:15 everytime I hear "The greatest gift and honor, is having you for a daughter." I start crying uncontrollably because I lost my dad a while back and I always thought I was his biggest disappointment but my family says he was always proud of me and its so hard to believe or accept because I did fail him so much. I really really hope this was how he felt instead but my mind keeps telling me I didn't deserve that for all my shortcomings.
You need to look up Jackie Chan singing Man Out Of You. He voices Shang in the Chinese dub and has a wonderful singing voice from his youth in a Hong Kong acting/martial arts school.
"I saw there's a Mulan 2" I don't normally say this to people, but *DO NOT* watch that movie. It's almost certain to make you hate just about everyone the first movie made you love, especially Mushu. It's literally "Character Assassination: the Movie."
I never hated Mulan 2. Sure, its not as good at Mulan. No disney sequel really ever is. But I did love the princesses and the relationship between them and Mulan's friends. =P
I loved your reactions. This movie is so deep... even the fighting scene on the roof when Milan was cornered, she didn’t need a sword that represents strength or manliness, what she needed was intelligence. She used her fan, which is representative of her femininity, to overcome the challenges and this symbolises that she as a woman was equally as capable as when she was Ping, a man
Honestly, Mulan 2 isn’t fantastic, but it’s definitely worth reacting to! You get to watch the existing characters evolve in their relationships, and at the end of the day, it’s one of the better Disney sequels.

This movie came out during a pivotal time in my life. There's a reason why Mulan is my fav Disney female char and it's because I am like her in many ways. I was 16 when this movie came out and still trying to find my place. Reflection really hit home for me. The music when Mulan puts on her father's armor, it's called Short Hair. That moment is my fav Disney musical moment because of how epic it is. You should have seen this scene in the theater with that surround sound, wow!
I actually thought that although the song was good, it was perfected when the soldiers dressed like women to help save the king. Being a man was not just about brute strength, as Mulan clearly showed them, it was about going beyond the stereotype.
“Dishonor on You! Dishonor on your Cow!” May be one of my favorite Disney lines of all time! It’s definitely one of the ones that comes into my life the most. Lol

This will probably be completely unrelated to Disney, but as a request - please consider "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (2002)! Even in my mid 20's, still find it a classic DreamWorks film. I need Mulan on Broadway--not just for the stellar action, but because I always wanted more songs. I just hope it goes closer to Disney's animated version than their live-action version.
If you want to watch a live-action Mulan I highly recommend Mulan: the Rise of a Warrior rather than the Disney one. It is a bit of a lengthy movie, but so well done. I don't think I've ever seen such a beautiful and loving betrayal. There was a lot of great acting, drama, and action scenes. And unlike the Disney version takes place over the course of nearly a decade (I think it was and minus the childhood scenes), after all, they are fighting a war/campaign.
I hear mixed reviews about the live action how ever. Mulan is such a great story because while no one seems to agree what time frame she is supposed to be placed in history, the fact that the story always sums up with her going home after all that adventure it shows that any woman is capable of greatness even those who live an ordinary life 🙂
#bingers George of the Jungle, Ever After. If you’re going on a Disney animated train highly highly recommend Treasure Planet, Dinosaur, and Atlantis each are Disney criminally underrated films.
Love your reactions! Mulan is a family favorite 😊! As other commenters mentioned, Ming Na-Wen (Mulan) does have a cameo in the film “re-make”, but she also has an extensive list of TV and film performances. (Most recently as Fennec Shand in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and (just released) The Bad Batch.)
If you didn't notice, when they were waking the dragon family guardian, the relection of the dragon statue lines up with mulans reflection. The dragon had already awoken in the form of Mulan, she was her own guardian
Binge watching your videos, new subs here! This is a masterpiece and the live action version doesn't make justice to this! If the second part hurt this badly, I think the live action killed it! Oh and xiran jay Zhou did a fantastic video duo dissecting the cultural aspects in both Mulan 1998 and 2020, and highlights just how badly the 2020 version fucked up in the most fantastic roast, she’s so god damned funny

5:25 its stupid though like i get its a rule for one man from every family to fight in the war but what if they aren't able like if sick, injured or old like they won't be of much help in the war its basically a suicide mission they just sacrificing themselves stupidly for no reason
SUCH a good movie, SUCH a good protagonist. One of my very favourites growing up because of the humour (we don't get Eddie Murphy in my language's dub of course, but the VA and jokes are still on point, and the songs still hit hard af), the art, and Mulan herself. Possibly my favourite as an adult, having learnt more about myself and understood more about why it had always been so meaningful to me. The pacing is good, the montages don't feel forced in, some of the transition scenes are **chef's kiss**, the emotional payoff in some scenes is SO well deserved, the subtle things I didn't get as a kid are handled so nicely (I didn't quite understand the little doll as a symbol for the harrowing death of an innocent child back then, it didn't even cross my mind that war meant children would die as well, and funnily enough, I never even noticed the bodies in the burnt village scene until I got older xD thought they were just clothes/armour on the snow), I love how powerful they can be when you finally get them as you get older, and how it doesn't feel like they have to spell everything out for you just because it's a kids' movie. "Reflection" is BREATHTAKING. "I'll make a man out of you" is SO much fun, and when the reprise comes in with all of them dressed as women, it's effective every. damn. time. I always cry when Mulan's dad tosses aside the sword and the crest and just embraces her. I always choke up when she looks at the helmet and talks about just wanting to prove to herself she had any value. I love the conflict in this movie. It's not perfect but... I just love this movie so goddamn much. Whether it's in my native language or english, the VA in both versions feels so comforting and nostalgic to me, and it's absolutely wonderful. Loved watching the reaction too, probably should have said that first, or at least sooner xD the reaction to all the burns and sass in this movie was priceless 👌
I like the cartoon Mulan a lot more because it shows Mulan actually working to get stronger while the other one is like "oh she didn't work at all she was just born with qi, this is what makes her a good fighter", basically discrediting all the hard work she put in to become a warrior, she struggled for that shit , she didn't just get some magical powers from birth.
@@rachelwarner3745 I heard it was even less accurate than the animated one, because there was no magic or chosen one trope at all in the original Ballad.
That courage alone is the courage of a fierce dragon.
yess this! this was one of the coolest things I never realized as a kid but came to understand much later when I was older. was totally blown away by the dragon symbolism and how well it was weaved into that scene where she makes the decision to leave.
@@mariakal605 Even when she pulls the blade from the sheith, and we go from seeing its draconic face in the sword's hilt to her face reflected in the blade...
Dang. Never noticed that. I absolutely love that !
Oh my gosh I never noticed this...
In the end, we all want to be worthy and good at something, so I'm more inclined to believe that was the dominant factor 💓
@@aquatus1 At that point, there WAS no war effort. The Huns were dead, buried in the avalanche. Hence the parade at the Palace.
Mushu not only is played by the legendary Eddie Murphy but among my favourite dragons ever. *I am the powerful, the pleasurable, the indestructible Mushu* 😂😂😂
i know soo funny
As a kid I never really notice what he was saying. This movie is so enjoyable as an adult, I just love it lol
LOL! I'm with you. The "Artist" formerly known as "Mushu."
Or my favorite of his quotes: Dishonor on you! Dishonor on your cow! xD
As soon I seen a smoke/fog machine as a kid. I would lay on the ground, wait for the mist just to yell out "I LIVE!!!!"
I can recite this movie word for word. It’s one of my faves.
Fun fact: the voice actor for Mulan is Ming Na Wen and she’s the only actor to complete the “Disney hat trick”. She’s a Disney Princess, in the Star Wars universe and the MCU.
@@JazzStation95 And thankfully NOT in that...disaster of a prequel...
the moment when the entire crowd of people in the palace bow to Mulan always gave me chills
Yes! Same with the bow to the hobbits in Return of the King.
I always loved that they said the way up the pole required discipline and strength. Arguably all of those men had that, but what they truly needed was determination and ingenuity, both of which Mulan embodies
Julia!!! You are sooo right!!
ABSOLUTELY agree...very insightful
Mulan kind of cheated because every one tried to hold on to the weights with them on the side. She wrapped them around each other and used them as leverage making it much easier. It’s a very good method
@@MoveConsistently I wouldn't call that cheating. They were all given the same tools and instructions. If the correct way to get up pole were from the sides, then surely one of the other men who were all stronger and with more experience would have made it up.

I immediately thought boobs. Like. She has two. They’d notice that and that’s how I interpreted it lol I was half right 😂
Mulan is my fav Disney movie.
Eddie doesn’t miss 😂 Mushu and the donkey, two of my favorites ever
When I was a kid, I was convinced Mushu was my spirit animal and he is still one of my favorite animated characters of all time . My sister and I memorized most of the this movie. 🤣🤣🤣 “I am Yau King of the rock, and there’s nuttin you girls can do about it!” “Ugly concubines!”! 😂😂😂

@@blackkatt777 right lmao? Ever try those Disney "try not to sing" challenges? I do fine until I hear that first note of this song...then it's all over
The Huns were probably the scariest Disney villains to me growing up. The village scene with the doll gave me nightmares.
Bruh Mulan was such a violent movie compared to a lot of the other Disney Princess movies. XD
Frollo was creepy too
Seeing them running down the mountain always gave me anxiety as a kid
The sudden tonal whiplash as "Girl Worth Fighting For," crashes headfirst into a burnt down village, juxtaposing the romanticized ideals of glory with the harsh realities of war is just... *chefs kiss*
Fun fact: Shangs Mandarin singing voice is Jackie Chan. I highly recommend finding the Chinese dub of Ill Make a Man Out of You its great
Donny Osmond was the original English voice.

Mulan has to be one of the most rewatchable Disney movies ever, never get tired of it. Also love the Bills gear in the background.

The voice actor for Mulan was Ming-Na Wen, who was Melinda May on Agents of SHIELD. She gets a cameo in the live action, which is my favorite part about it. I love every role I've ever seen/heard her in.
19:15 everytime I hear "The greatest gift and honor, is having you for a daughter." You need to look up Jackie Chan singing Man Out Of You. He voices Shang in the Chinese dub and has a wonderful singing voice from his youth in a Hong Kong acting/martial arts school.
"I saw there's a Mulan 2"
I don't normally say this to people, but *DO NOT* watch that movie. It's almost certain to make you hate just about everyone the first movie made you love, especially Mushu. It's literally "Character Assassination: the Movie."
I love Mulan 2 though :(
Out of all the direct to DVD sequels, it's one of the better one but if you want to watch a good movie he should follow ur advise
I actually like Mulan 2. It was nice to see the relationship between Mulan and Shang develop more
I never hated Mulan 2. Sure, its not as good at Mulan. No disney sequel really ever is. But I did love the princesses and the relationship between them and Mulan's friends. =P
It is the worst
I loved your reactions. This movie is so deep... even the fighting scene on the roof when Milan was cornered, she didn’t need a sword that represents strength or manliness, what she needed was intelligence. She used her fan, which is representative of her femininity, to overcome the challenges and this symbolises that she as a woman was equally as capable as when she was Ping, a man
Well said! well said!
Honestly, Mulan 2 isn’t fantastic, but it’s definitely worth reacting to! You get to watch the existing characters evolve in their relationships, and at the end of the day, it’s one of the better Disney sequels.
This is my favorite Disney movie of all time.
This is my second fave after Aladdin 💖🤍

This movie came out during a pivotal time in my life. There's a reason why Mulan is my fav Disney female char and it's because I am like her in many ways. I was 16 when this movie came out and still trying to find my place. Reflection really hit home for me. The music when Mulan puts on her father's armor, it's called Short Hair. That moment is my fav Disney musical moment because of how epic it is. You should have seen this scene in the theater with that surround sound, wow!

“How is he in somebody’s war he only got one eye”

This will probably be completely unrelated to Disney, but as a request - please consider "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" (2002)! Even in my mid 20's, still find it a classic DreamWorks film. I need Mulan on Broadway--not just for the stellar action, but because I always wanted more songs. I just hope it goes closer to Disney's animated version than their live-action version.
OMG yes Mulan and Hercules are both so so good. Get ready to bring out them vocals in Hercules too
5:40 I was 8. When that music came on...I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD WHY MY PARENTS LOVED ACTION.
Baby's first action music!

"That's a psychopath, ma'am" 🤣
There's a really good UA-camr called Xiran Jay Zhao who did a whole breakdown and analysis of this movie and the live action one from a Chinese historian perspective
5:25 its stupid though like i get its a rule for one man from every family to fight in the war but what if they aren't able like if sick, injured or old like they won't be of much help in the war its basically a suicide mission they just sacrificing themselves stupidly for no reason
Fun fact: Mulan is the few real historical films that had been true, but in the movie it is a bit more kid friendly.
I watched mulan everyday for like a year straight as a little girl. My dad still jokes about it but she was such a good character to look up to ☺️
#BillyBinges Lilo & Stitch (2002)

I like the cartoon Mulan a lot more because it shows Mulan actually working to get stronger while the other one is like "oh she didn't work at all she was just born with qi, this is what makes her a good fighter", basically discrediting all the hard work she put in to become a warrior, she struggled for that shit , she didn't just get some magical powers from birth.
Bruh your joy is so palpable man, you hype while singing makes me wanna sing too 💃🏽
"Did you guys watch the LIVE ACTION MULAN? _Was it good_ ?"
😫😫😫😫
It was okay. Different, possibly more accurate to the legend of Mulan. But the animated version still beats it 😊
Right? I couldn’t even finish it. Horrible adaptation. So boring.
@@rachelwarner3745 I heard it was even less accurate than the animated one, because there was no magic or chosen one trope at all in the original Ballad. She was just a normal girl who enlisted in place of her father and served for 12 years until she returns home and reveals herself to be a woman. (At least that's what the wikipedia says)
It depends, if you're hoping for something accurate to the animation, don't watch it. As a different movie, it's good. (Forget about the animation)
