Nintendo is great because you grow up playing their games, then you buy the new console to your kids and this keep hapenning over and over again, because the firsty party games of Nintendo they really do put a lot of effort to be fun and that's why i like Nintendo just to have fun for more serious games i use my Playstation 5 for Resident Evil 4, God Of War etc...

To be clear, patents are THE ONLY WAY to protect game mechanics and it's really difficult and expensive to get one. What you can't do is copyright or trademark mechanics. And to further clarify, patents, copyrights, and trademarks are all very different things that have their own laws governing them.
Imo, game mechanics shouldn't be protected, but code strings should be. Reverse engineering shouldn't be clear to do as well, unless confirmed to be stolen.

And I want to start this off by saying that patent law and copyright law are broken. They just are. This is not a new thing, and it's not specific to the US. International copyright/patent law is even more of an issue. That said, I wonder if people know that if you fail to defend your copyrights, they can be taken away from you? Those copyright strikes aren't just Nintendo being malicious, they have a legal obligation to protect their copyrights if they want to keep them. And they are a corporation, of course they want to maintain the copyright to multi-million dollar franchises. I mean, copyright law has been rewritten multiple times just so Disney can keep hold of Mickey Mouse. You think Nintendo wants to lose their cash cow any more than Disney does? At the end of the day, Nintendo needs to make money to continue to exist, and their franchises are a large part of that. Patents are a whole other issue, and have to do with making things and have nothing to do with Intellectual Property. I can kind of see why you can be allowed to patent game mechanics, even though at times I think it's very dumb (look at Wizards of the Coast's patent on the "Tap" mechanic), but at least patents have a shorter lifespan than copyrights. At least in the US. I don't know Japanese patent law, which is where Nintendo is suing Palworld. Even if they win the case, it won't affect Palworld in other regions. But also, as it is a patent case, Palworld can literally just change the offending mechanics with an update.
I like how people who clearly have not been engaged in high level business to this day criticize Nintendo for the exclusivity contracts of the 1980's. Be honest if you had a opportunity to tap into an underutilized market you are going to want to clear the way for yourself to operate unimpeded for as long a period of time as you could muster. No one is going to invite uncertainty into their business ventures if they can help it. No one honestly wants competition in business, most of us just deal with it because we have to. How does this make Nintendo bad?
Have you seen Nintendo's patents? One is for encouraging healthy sleep from game mechanics. Such as, a reason to play in the mornings and a reason to stop playing at Nintendo's bed time for you. Like only certain pokemon shoeing up in the morning and not including certain pokemon passed your designated bed time.
Because monopolies are bad. Just because Nintendo wanted to own an entire market doesn't mean it's ethical for them to do so. Plus it negatively affects the end user, i.e. us, so we should not tolerate such behavior.

The difference is that when they patent something it’s pretty straightforward but this is something that so broad that it spands the monster catching genre all together. You have temtem, digimon, monster hunter etc, it’s going into competition and that’s what’s going on

@@FNGalcatraz I do think the lawsuit is kind of dumb, but Nintendo, in my opinion, was going to sue with whatever their strongest option was, and in this case, it was (in their opinion) this patent. Also, it’s really hard not to look at Palworld and not see some similarities that kind of cross the line. Maybe suing isn’t the right action, but something probably is. Other monster/creature based games can thrive. While certainly not that overtly similar to something like Pokémon, a series like Monster Hunter can and has done wonderfully (and is actively supported on Nintendo platforms).
Nintendo is the video game company that invented quality control. When it comes to quality control you can't just pick and choose what games you are going to strike down and leave be.

At least I don't play Palworld. Digimon is more my game. It started as a Virtual Pet of the Battle Class. I never owned one of them Digivices, but I DO have fond memories of watching Digimon on Fox Kids.

Do you think that PocketPair tried to patent something that Nintendo already owned and use it to extort money from Nintendo? I personally see that game studios and developers should start avoiding more game mechanics for which Nintendo has patents, which could give birth to new and creative ways to realize video games in different ways that have not been seen before. For example, if Nintendo owns the patent for jumping and walking in virtual space, then every video game doesn't need a character that can jump and walk and instead studios and developers could do something original and creative that doesn't infringe on Nintendo's intellectual properties.

In fact, if my memory serves me well, Sony put something in the contract with Nintendo (without telling them) for the N-PSX that they would get the royalties for the games published on the CD-ROM. Nintendo couldn't reach an agreement with Sony, so they surprised them with the Philipps announcement out of the blue.
I find them striking fangames funny since a lot of fanmade Mario level creators existed on the internet prior to them doing it officially with Super Mario Maker.
Oh no, Nintendo acts like a business? We all like to think Nintendo is some kind of bastion of player goodwill, but at the end of the day they are a business, and a shrewd one at that. You don't survive as long as they have, through several failed devices, having lost millions (possibly billions) multiple times and doing battle against the likes of Sony and Microsoft without being aggressive in some respects. I do think Nintendo loves its players and fans, but they are not going to stop being a business or doing what they thing is the best balance of "good for the players but good for us". Let your guard down too much and for too long and Nintendo goes into the dustbin of history.

With all the copyright things, most people fail to realize this is a Japan thing not a Nintendo thing. Just look at anime. Those companies go nuts over protecting their shows.
The N64 didn’t do great in the states, it did great in Canada most of all. It also actually did well in Japan in its own right, good enough for them to believe they could release the DD attachment.
Games being built from the ground up for a specific piece of hardware are often better than multi-platform games. Some of the best games ever made were built specifically for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Playstation, and N64 when exclusivity deals were at their strongest. It is so easy for people to whine and complain about exclusivity deals and bemoan how bad they are. The reality is that it often resulted in better games, though. Sometimes it would leave a vacuum on one piece of hardware or another for a creative imitator to get noticed. There are all types of positives that no one talks about because that takes effort and more than a surface level of knowledge about past game systems.

While Nintendo has problems (such as the copyright strike and the fan game takedown, especially with the PalWorld situation for a example), thank God the games that Nintendo makes is nowhere near hot garbage as Disney, EA, Activision, and the other triple AAA companies. their rationale for attacking homebrews is 2 things. 1) it's competition for their stuff. If you're playing a homebrew you're not playing on Nintendo. 2) it affects how the character is received and associated in the overall culture. If there's a game of Link slicing heads off then that affects his image in the overall gaming space. People will be more likely to associate Link to the unofficial version rather than Nintendo's official version.

Nintendo certainly does have it's aspects I'm not at all happy with, but they also have never asked me for $700 to buy their console with a garbage overall library (yes I think Astro Bot is good, but there's only a handful of games at best that make me interested at all in a PS5) and they've never EVER had a time where they weren't focused on the long term of video gaming. While Xbox and SONY both feel like they're making short term decisions, Nintendo is thinking 10 years down the road at all times. That's what makes them stable and reliable even if they are unsuccessful for a generation. Activision and EA have been blood sucking leaches on the industry for a loooong time. I'm pretty sure EA went 13 years without updating the graphics on madden and reselling it every year for $60 bucks because of a roster change. And Activision's treatment of their staff alone makes them the biggest @$$holes in all of gaming in my opinion.
You can't import 3D assets in Dreams. Firstly it doesn't use traditional polys and vertices to make 3D, it uses Signed Distance Fields.... so basically any artwork on dreams has been made by a Dream user.

I've actually worked for Nintendo Germany in Frankfurt for almost 10 years and when I started I was like "This must be the land of milk and honey; I'm gonna have breakfast with Mario every morning and earn tons of money!" Reality check: Nope. Bad pay (except for the managers and executives; they earned a fortune) and toxic work environments in many departments (bullying, body shaming, sexism etc.). Yes. They make fun games and have awesome IPs, but Nintendo is just a typical multi-billion-$ business that's just as ruthless, aggressive and toxic as most of the other ones. On the mario, zelda, pokemon one, I disagree. Pokemon makes the most money but runs the worst out of any Nintendo franchise. They haven't really improved since the first one. Still not happy about Nintendo going after Palworld. They can't just let something good exist.

I can kind of see why you can be allowed to patent game mechanics, even though at times I think it's very dumb (look at Wizards of the Coast's patent on the "Tap" mechanic), but at least patents have a shorter lifespan than copyrights. At least in the US. I don't know Japanese patent law, which is where Nintendo is suing Palworld. Even if they win the case, it won't affect Palworld in other regions. But also, as it is a patent case, Palworld can literally just change the offending mechanics with an update.

I like how people who clearly have not been engaged in high level business to this day criticize Nintendo for the exclusivity contracts of the 1980's. Not defending Nintendo but, patenting game mechanics isn’t new. WB did the same with the “nemesis system” in Shadows of War, about a decade ago.
And Namco patented having games to play during a loading screen (yes this actually existed). It’s not uncommon.
The difference is that when they patent something it’s pretty straightforward but this is something that so broad that it spands the monster catching genre all together. You have temtem, digimon, monster hunter etc, it’s going into competition and that’s what’s going on

Also, it’s really hard not to look at Palworld and not see some similarities that kind of cross the line. Maybe suing isn’t the right action, but something probably is.
Other monster/creature based games can thrive. While certainly not that overtly similar to something like Pokémon, a series like Monster Hunter can and has done wonderfully (and is actively supported on Nintendo platforms).
Nintendo is the video game company that invented quality control. When it comes to quality control you can't just pick and choose what games you are going to strike down and leave be.

An ex dev of Palworld said he wanted to do something original for the game but was forced by the CEO to copy other games so they can make more money.
The backstabbing thing is half true. In fact, if my memory serves me well, Sony put something in the contract with Nintendo (without telling them) for the N-PSX that they would get the royalties for the games published on the CD-ROM. Nintendo couldn't reach an agreement with Sony, so they surprised them with the Philipps announcement out of the blue.

We all like to think Nintendo is some kind of bastion of player goodwill, but at the end of the day they are a business, and a shrewd one at that. You don't survive as long as they have, through several failed devices, having lost millions (possibly billions) multiple times and doing battle against the likes of Sony and Microsoft without being aggressive in some respects. I do think Nintendo loves its players and fans, but they are not going to stop being a business or doing what they thing is the best balance of "good for the players but good for us". Let your guard down too much and for too long and Nintendo goes into the dustbin of history.
Nintendo do not love there fans if they keep NES/SNES/N64/Gameboy/Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advence behind a Nintendo online subscription paywall for 1 year aleast on Playstation 5 I can buy PS1/PS2 games without being force on a online subscription.

The N64 didn’t do great in the states, it did great in Canada most of all. It also actually did well in Japan in its own right, good enough for them to believe they could release the DD attachment.
The n64 was in third in console race in Japan, it was second in the states, a distant second mind you but it was second in The states.

Games being built from the ground up for a specific piece of hardware are often better than multi-platform games. Some of the best games ever made were built specifically for the NES, SNES, Genesis, Turbo Grafx 16, Playstation, and N64 when exclusivity deals were at their strongest.
It is so easy for people to whine and complain about exclusivity deals and bemoan how bad they are. The reality is that it often resulted in better games, though. Sometimes it would leave a vacuum on one piece of hardware or another for a creative imitator to get noticed. There are all types of positives that no one talks about because that takes effort and more than a surface level of knowledge about past game systems.

their rationale for attacking homebrews is 2 things. 1) it's competition for their stuff. If you're playing a homebrew you're not playing on Nintendo. 2) it affects how the character is received and associated in the overall culture. If there's a game of Link slicing heads off then that affects his image in the overall gaming space. People will be more likely to associate Link to the unofficial version rather than Nintendo's official version.
They waited to see if palworld was going to be successful before suing them was very dirty of nintendo. They have known about palworld for years so they had plenty of opertuity to stop it before it launched.

Nintendo certainly does have it's aspects I'm not at all happy with, but they also have never asked me for $700 to buy their console with a garbage overall library (yes I think Astro Bot is good, but there's only a handful of games at best that make me interested at all in a PS5) and they've never EVER had a time where they weren't focused on the long term of video gaming. While Xbox and SONY both feel like they're making short term decisions, Nintendo is thinking 10 years down the road at all times. That's what makes them stable and reliable even if they are unsuccessful for a generation. Activision and EA have been blood sucking leaches on the industry for a loooong time. I'm pretty sure EA went 13 years without updating the graphics on madden and reselling it every year for $60 bucks because of a roster change. And Activision's treatment of their staff alone makes them the biggest @$$holes in all of gaming in my opinion.
Aleast i can buy PS1 and PS2 games on my ps5 without a online subscription paywall for 1 year like nintendo is doing.

I mean why would the 30th anniversary ps5 pros change people’s minds from what I read there’s only going to be 12k pro models available for pre order and probably 5 or 6 k of that will be scalpers.

Notice how fans only want to make Nintendo games. Sonic is the only other series that gets modded, but they love the attention.
Yeah true nintendo makes quality games but their business practice leads a lot to be desired.
It may just be me (I hope it's not), but I value workers/developers lifes over my ability to play games.
Nintendo is really anti consumer and anti fan. Though the comparison I would make is Disney.
