Whenever I go through a big life change, I get the urge to paint (my living room, bedroom, etc.). I know a lot of people can't do that and it's a privilege, but it's helped me feel like I'm making a fresh start and reinventing myself!
I knew I would want to create new memories in my home with my old friends (and some new ones). And I stayed absolutely true to my very favorite things that brought happiness to my heart, which in 1994, was birdhouses, apple decor in the kitchen, warm jewel tones for my couch, and a lovely vine design in my wallpaper. It was country warmth that brought a smile to my face. Gave me a fresh start on my life after the suicide loss.
I haven't yet reached the decorating phase. Left an abusive marriage with just the clothes I was wearing and have been staying with friends for almost 3 years. Hopefully around this time next year I will be in my own space and I will use some of your ideas.
Hello Steffi, I decorate my home/apartment like I dress myself, I love a little bit of everything, I'm a fan of moody jewel tones and black. I live alone so it's amazing to do what I want how I want. I so happy for you, you have that glow you had in your studio apartment. I wish you the very best on your healing and happiness. Thank you for sharing 🌲🌿
Well good for you. Recognized your strength. You left. I’m sure it wasn’t easy. Now even if you’re living with someone else, decorate your space. Trust me I’m an older woman and decor and design is my profession. Also, mentoring women for almost 2 decades. Decor has a huge effect on how you feel in that environment. So do whatever you can to make your space pretty. Flowers in particular which are inexpensive. Candles for soothing smells and relaxing. This Stephanie chick absolutely knows what she’s talking about.❤️🙏🏼
My now-deceased husband was not a particularly neat man. I tried to keep our place neat and tidy, but it was really impossible. When he died, I went into a very deep depression which actually turned into physical and emotional illnesses. It took about three years to pull myself together with the help of my doctors and my psychiatrist. As I regained physical and emotional health, I realized that I could now clean and decorate in my cozy-minimalist style, and it really helped me emotionally.. I began watching minimalist You Tube channels (you are my one and only maximalist channel, and I love you to pieces!) Now, although I still miss my husband every single day, I have made a comfortable small home for myself using only my idea of what it should look like. Although I have spent more money than I would have liked, because I made a lot of mistakes trying to find what worked for me, it has all been worth it. I know you have been hurting for awhile, and I just want to say that eventually you will reach the end of that particular experience. I am loving watching you work through the pain with your decorating. Know that you are admired and appreciated, Steffi. I anxiously wait for your Sunday videos to drop, and your never disappoint. I love your channel so much. Keep moving forward, knowing that there are a bunch of us rooting for you! BTW, I don't know what I would do without my (two) cats. They are the loves of my life, and Boot is the part of my heart that got me through those tough three years. Helo is lucky to have you and you him!
I'm so sorry for your loss, but I bet your late husband would be proud of you to see the healing, recovery + progress you have made in your life + in your space 💓I'm glad you have your two kitties by your side!
When my husband died many years back, redecorating my home took on a life of its own. It was so important that I could make the space just my own. I had been living in Bob's shadow for most of our 14-year marriage, so it was quite freeing to rediscover who I was and create spaces that felt warm and cozy. I felt it was a gift to focus on all the details, and it did help to pull me out of my intense pain.
My new Sunday ritual is curling up with a cup of coffee and watching your videos :) Totally know what you mean about romance! My old washcloths were getting literally threadbare so I just bought some new plush dark purple ones and they make me SO happy. It sounds silly, but little stuff like that matters!
God's and Goddess Steffi thank You, so so much. Really. I cannot tell You how healing your videos are to me. To really not feel alone in how I feel, and watching You decorate has actually helped me move forward through my trauma. My whole world collapsed around me when my apartment was burned down. When I moved in this place I hated it. I actually broke a hole in the wall putting something up. Watching your videos made me feel confident enough to take a breath, fix the problems and start decorating, myself and my place! Shitty before pretty. I tell myself that now every day, everytime there is something to overcome. Thank you thank you Our amazing Misfit!!!
Hello Steffi, love you vlogs. You have come so far since you started this new journey and made a beautiful, cozy home for you and Helio. I love the way he sits in your lap and cuddles up to you. Looking forward to the next vlog.
The sparkle comment speaks volumes to me and put into words how I’ve been feeling about my home currently and after I’ve done a project. Sending healing vibes your way 💓
Your apartment is looking so beautiful and dramatic Steffi ! I agree it so helpful to focus on beautifying your home....it takes a person’s focus off your “issues” 😅. You are doing so well....Take care ❤❤❤
I completely agree, I find making a space reflect my personality and surrounding myself with beauty helps me center myself and makes me feel calm in my space. Also the act of creating it is very therapeutic!!
Decorating is very comforting to me. I love it's therapeutic effects, how it increases my joy. I love your videos and you. Please keep creating even if you are just sitting there talking to us. 💓
You're so right with the points you share. Making a place a haven for yourself is important. Our version of nesting. Especially as years go on and we spend more time at home and socialize less, what surrounds us would best be things we love to look at and use. When you can afford higher quality items, choose well so they suit you and satisfy your style preferences for the long run.
Healing and Thriving. We need both to sustain us in life. I can relate to decorating as a means of communication as my decor tells who I am, what I like without me telling you. Love your vlogs Steffi! ❤
I love this explanation of what decorating does for self-healing. I often feel guilty for wanting my space to look a certain way, for wanting things -- feeling that it is too materialistic and I should just forget about it. Hearing you talk about this makes me feel a little less guilty for wanting certain things 🙏
@@Ivyana5 thank you so much! And yes, reframing decor as valuable creative expression rather than just a superficial materialistic act is very helpful. 😊
I am so glad that you are finding healing, Steffi. Your place looks stunning. I wish you all the love, joy, and healing that you deserve. BTW...I have NEVER owned a home. I have lived in an apartment for 30 years now (not the same one, of course...) and there is nothing wrong with that!! You do you. My VERY best wishes to you!
Thank you so much for your transparency. I’m just ended my first long-term adult relationship & moved into my first studio apartment (first time living alone). I discovered your channel while looking for studio apartment layout inspo, but it has become so much more to me. I’m also rediscovering myself. Thank you for making me feel normal ❤
Thank you so much for sharing this! It really means so much to me. Other peoples' transparency has helped me feel normal, so I'm happy to pay it forward in a small way. 🥰
It is so great to see you creating your home in your apartment. It is your soft place to relax, your comforting place to come home to, your space where you can be your most authentic self. It is truly an extension of you. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. I know many who watch your videos are inspired by you. Know that your efforts are so appreciated. Wishes for continued healing and fulfillment!
aw girl it's so nice to see your healing journey, even tho there are still tough days, you are doing great! your space looks incredible, it's nice to see your old studio influences/ artwork being displayed again with new finds. i hope it brings you comfort, joy + peace to start feeling "at home" again. thanks for being honest + vulnerable. you're one of my biggest inspirations in finally growing out of my "free/ passed down/ cheap furniture" era + slowly starting to collect quality pieces that speak to me!
Thank you for being so real. I appreciate your candor. Also, sharing your mini meltdown resonated so much with me. The number of times my anxiety has tried to kick my butt, and I've had to coach myself into motivation, is ridiculous. On a final note, I love your view on romance. I've been drawn to decor that I was previously never drawn to, but I find myself wanting more of that style in my space because I'm looking for more comfort, whimsy, and touches of romance. Honestly, this whole video resonated with me. Thank you.
So glad to hear that you are healing, thank you for sharing your journey, I could see you closing in before and today I see you brighter and more confident ❤ love your channel❤
I have just added some faux plants and lamps to my home. When I turn off the big light and put those lamps on I feel that my home is giving me a big hug. Loving this new series of videos. Take care of yourself xx
Decluttering and decorating helped me so much, and discovering what I like, love, and my limiting beliefs. Threw away so much stuff when I started decluttering, and when I moved into my own apartment for the first time, I painted all of the walls and chose a new color pattern, that felt more like me. Painting the walls was so empowering, I never knew it could be. There's POWER in our homes! ❤❤
There are times in life that just stinks. Taking one day at a time is not always enough. Sometimes we just have to take it hour by hour. This time will pass and you will heal. I just left a marriage of 28 yrs. I thought I’d be with this man forever but when I left, I found myself! Love yourself. Sending you good vibes from NC.
I found your channel when I was doing exactly this- having moved into my own apartment after several years in a live-in relationship. Having the freedom to decorate how ever I wanted was almost overwhelming at first, but it was also so affirming and empowering. Thank you for helping me with this journey and sharing yours with us
Well your words are so honest i struggle to just put food on the table but my home lets me know i will keep moving forward fighting you could say and when its overwhelming i begin to change my environment around and this simple act is extremely rewarding and i keep moving on in this thing we all call life Thank you so much!
Hello Steffi, I enjoy your content and you are so genuine compared to other UA-camrs. Thank you so much for pushing yourself but if being on UA-cam creates too much pressure, have you considered becoming a full time house designer or consultant?
I shared your video with this note: A lot of human dramas can be watched or shown. Here is one of them, given from the heart to others in need of support.
I have those exact same wall prints as the black and white ones above your sofa. I received them about a week ago...still looking for frames for them, though. Seeing how wonderful yours look makes me excited to get mine up on the wall. Love your beautiful space.
I’m seeing this video a couple weeks after leaving a 6 year relationship. I can’t express how helpful this is. Also, your space is beautiful and I love the color palette SO much
New subscriber and love hearing everything you have to say!! 💜✨ You just have a really great way of putting your words together that makes me want to keep watching your videos. It feels like spending time with a very good friend! Thanks so much for all your encouraging ideas and for sharing your real life and your genuine self with us! I'm enjoying your channel very much!! 🌿🌧️
The thing is, most of us don’t live alone. So our styling decisions inevitably involve a certain degree of compromise. That said, my husband and I pretty much have the same taste re colours and decor. Restyling my living room and bedroom got me through the pandemic. I had to stay indoors for four months, due to respiratory problems, and I’d have gone crazy without a project. Spent a lot of money though!
When you find the right partner you are able to be who you are. Your partner will celebrate who you are. I am sorry your experience was so hurtful but believe me from experience I know a good relationship helps you bloom not die on the vine. I have been married 40 happy years and have become more of who I am. You need to have hope for the future. None of us stand still.❤❤❤😊
Were you feeling empty because maybe you weren't able to decorate and be happy with conpromising your space?! Being with a partner definitely comes with compromises, and you have to be okay with it. I want to give my husband AND kids a beautiful space we can ALL enjoy and that also makes me happy, even though I can't just get EVERYTHING I'd imagined for the space. A family or couple space is going to be very different than just your own space.
Thank you for watching! How has decorating helped you through the tough times?
