- DEI - Divide et Impera - is one of the best Total War mods I've ever played, and perhaps the most essential. It essentially makes Rome 2 into what it could've been if we assume that the core remains, but if we had so much more complexity, depth and choice included. I've covered DEI before, but since it's been so long, I thought it was time to jump back in, and give a new and improved overview over the entirety of this amazing Rome 2 mod.
The incredible thing is that DEI has essentially been in development since Rome 2 released almost 10 years ago, and it really shows. With a population system, wonders, and even entirely new campaigns, it's one of the most comprehensive mods ever made. And so, is DEI worth playing in 2023? My favorite recent change is the removal of expert charge defense. They improved spear units' bonus vs cavalry to compensate and it has made using cavalry so much more reliable and I still get plenty of use out of light spear units vs cavalry
My only issue with this mod is, the fact that the AI is not affected by population. They keep churning out Stack After Stack
Really? I didn't know that. Do you know when the DEI dev team will add population effects to AI?
I don't have the same experience.
When, as Rome, I sack or liberate Carthaginian cities and towns in Africa they take a long time to recover from that.
Every now and then Carthages throws in large armies trying to recapture Sicily, but when I defeat them I don't see new stacks any time soon.
If the AI would use that systems it would just drain its population in the first 20 turns and cripple itself since it literally can't know about the script even existing.
That would make the game easy and boring. You could wipe out the AI's 1st population in 1 battle then steamroll them.

Nomadic factions overhaul
Probably the only thing that's not explained in this mod is the faction leader's trait. If you have the "disdained faction leader" malus, your campaign will be heavily affected and there's nothing you can do about it, other than killing him. That might be the only thing with no tooltip in the mod tho

People who I wouldn’t expect to be into it like shane Gillis, Duncan trussel, and others have mentioned playing total war warhammer on Joe rogan a few times. A lot of people would be into it I think especially if they came up with a console port, stellaris did really good with a console port.

DEI looks so good, I mean it's always been one of the gold standards for TW mods, but it's great to see they're still smashing it out of the park 😁 I think it's really cool that they get they have expanded their mod to the other campaigns as well with some little changes there. Awesome indeed! I'll have to play through as Egypt and see if it matches the time frame 😅 It's a faction that is often misrepresented in media, having chariots and old kingdom looking dudes during the Macedonian successor kingdom period hahaha. @@AndysTake Yeah vanilla Egypt in Rome 1 was damn.... Good thing there were mods. I still remember playing rome total war with the Europa barbarorum mod which was awesome and historically accurate. Damn time flies. I become 34 in december.

Sorry but the AI is still Rome 2 Ai and cannot be modded as it is hard coded.
Ppl who are 30 an up love to hype games because they cane from Tetris and mf pong bouncing mario around for an hour lmao , ive grown up with next gen games my whole life , rome 2 is buggy , unfulfilling, boring the economy system is dreadful the tech trees are wack , yet its still one if the best total war games because the others are so garbage u rlly only enjoy them for like a year thats why they make so many overhauls and mods the games are just not fun unless you still believe that modern games are unbelievable because your generation had 8 bit graphics an were satisfied with the ability to have alot of troops on one screen lmfao

They should increase the length of campaing movements. It's rediculouse that it takes a whole year to march through Italy.
You can always have an increased turns per year submod for something more realistic
Actually quite fitting historically.
Armies had far less logistic, leaning they needed to scavenge on the road and winter was usually no movements.
Taking a year for an army to go on foot from sicilia to po valley seems legit.
@@etienne8110 it looks like you never really walked for long distance. Even roman army could make up to 40 km in one day. So it should take no more then 2 month to march Italy

Of course you could force march them for a day or two.
But then not only are people tired, but the convoy can t follow. Nor does the food stocks.
If I can run a 100m in 20sec, doesn t mean i can run a marathon in 7min...
@@etienne8110 Hannibal left Cartagena in southeast spain around june 218 and was at lake trasimene a year later in 217. Thats more than the length of italy and also a lot of battles along the way and the alps.

Jumping into Rome 2 with DEI and the other recommended MODs you listed. This will be my first jump into a Total War game and I have mostly been a CK3/EU4 player, but I'm looking for a bit more in terms of the tactical side that you just simply don't get from PDX.

What was the final reshade mod this vato recommended?
At this point CA needs to hire these guys, if they did maybe they wouldn't have 2 disastrous releases in a row (Troy & Pharaoh) (only reason Troy had a strong start is because it was free Day 1)
In Lybia, I lose 10% tax income for every region(4 in total) because of subjugation (I conquered this province).
HOw do I get rid of that? My culture is at the majority, the public order is green, what else?

New player here. Bought it when it was on sale. Really enjoy Dei game mechanic. But I have to lower my graphic setting to "High" in order to prevent fps drop. (On my non-gaming laptop)
Can't play without this mod
I love DEI, it has reinvigorated my interest in Rome 2. The added complexity is great, and amount of additional units is astonishing. The fleshing out of factions beyond Rome&Carthage is great too. My only gripe with the mod is how much the AI cheats, it kinda breaks my immersion. I know base game Rome 2 AI already cheats a ton, and all the added systems are basically impossible for it. Always max public order, sanitation, supply, some random barbarian village will have more pop than Rome etc. It's great fun, but still brought down by Rome 2 issues
Yeah, and I noticed that the population system is kinda screwy and very historically innaccurate. Like, its cool that there IS a population system, but it feels like there's very little variation between cities. Titan of antiquites like Carthage, Alexandria, and Rome are all basically the size of most other urban centers around the map. And of course the AI generally have bigger cities than you due to extreme AI cheating. I'd love to actually see the significant differences between regions that existed historically. I want to see Syracuse tower over its neighbors, Rome put the other urban centers of Italy to shame, etc. But for that they'd need a more fleshed out pop system. And as someone who's modded and modeled much more complex population systems, it should be doable.
I think the mod is overrated tbh. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic mod, but AI cheating with stacks upon stacks of enemies, with the possibility of garrisoning them whilist you can't do so, without causing a rebellion within few turns is just stupid. The game is way too easy without the mod, the battles are easy as always, but the cheating AI just does not feel good. You can field a stack of army while your several enemies can field 3 each.
where do I get the reshade preset?
I dont think dei is what rome 2 “should’ve been” its far too complex and slow. CA wouldn’t make it. Its a great mod but its still a mod for a niche of people.
All you have to do to make it feel vanilla is have kams dynamic battle submod, lower upkeep and recruitment costs and use English names for factions and units.
agree somewhat, they had population mechanics in Rome I and I really missed that feature. Im not sure everybody loved it, that dash of more strat in the campaign was good but the tediousness of all DEI idk you might be right

i have only one complaint about this overhaul, it feels like the collision with enemy units when playing with cav has gone back to the rubbish collision that Rome 2 launched with. Not really smashing into units. And are easier getting tied down if like 2 cav gets caught when moving past an enemy unit
Been playing this for 4 years now and love it. The only criticism I have is the ambiguity in unit stats. For example, some elite swordsmen, such as the Pergamese royal thorax swordsmen, have amazing stats, yet the 'bonus vs. infantry' is missing.
DEI is even better with QSertoriusCampaignModifiers, plus Building effects and Diplomacy added just above the DEI mods.
What is QSertoriusCampaignModifiers? I’ve never heard of it
It's a great mod I really do enjoy it and how ity present. However i dislike how the AI doesn't use all of the restrictions or features that the player has to deal with, makes it a bit unfair in my opinion.
It's manageable tho. I was able to beat multiple campaigns
The AI doesn't know those systems exist and would just break itself. The population system for example would just cause the AI to drain all its regions and then stop recruiting almost completely.
@@gesuntight I understand that but that's the issue, the AI doesn't know how to use these new features and that doesn't make the experience entirely fair. Take for example i was preparing for an attack in north Africa and noticed this army with transport ships in the area, they never took losses and were sailing around the area for at least 10 turns.
@@KingZealotTactics It is not fair sure-but it would break the campaign if the ai has the same restrictions. Only CA can implement these features without some compromises.
@@KingZealotTactics you have to remember that that's just how the AI is. Even in Vanilla TW games the AI gets massive amounts of free cash for example. It's just not good enough to pose a challenge to everyone. For DeI specifically you can just start on a lower campaign difficulty until you get the hang of all the new systems and what you need to watch out for.
TY for the content and the visual mod suggestions - new gaming laptop and time for my yearly campaign. I think for the first time in history i can play full graphics no lag.
Last year was Avernii, this year is Rome. Never since launch / DEI have i got far into a Rome factioned campaign, so this a first as well. What can I say, I'm a slut for Barbarian [factions]

Big battles lag so much its not enjoyable for me, even if i drastically reduce the graphics. I dont understand it, i can run warhammer without any problems on highest graphic settings

i put in DEI - Divide et Impera in the steam work shop it comes up with lots of different mods its confusing me to know which one to have the same experience your talking about i got all the graphical up grades there easy to find but this DEI - Divide et Impera i have no idea which mods or mod i have to get ??
Just google the mod, they have a webpage. In steam it's the best rated mod so isn't even need to search for. You just dowload part 1-3 and any submods you want/ other minor mods that are compatible :)
DEI comes in three parts. You need to subscribe to all three for the mod to work.

what i realy want is more citys, it feels wrong to hold north africa by 5 citys. And i dont like what you can attack a city in first round of siege

DEI took me awhile to get into, but now that I’m initiated I love it. Def a few painful/frustrating campaigns to get the hang of it

Yeah forts in total war in general needs to be improved and return to the medieval 2/Empire way of setting down permanent forts!

I played alot out of New World and War of the Gods mod, just recently gave DEI a try and after 100 turns I still cant put final nail to Carthage. I captured Sicily,Corsica and Sardinia,Carthage itself and part of Africe and Mauretania and those fuckers still wont surrrender, and send atleast 2 stacks and 1 and a half navy to attack. With the threath of barbarians in the Cisalpine gaul whic changes owners every few turns (mostly Aridraei,Raeti or Averni battling for it) Im getting frustrated already.

First campaign in DEI that i tried was Alexander. Bad.. bad idea.
But seriously though, what are you supposed to do agaisnt like 12 doomstacks against 2 or 3 of yours when youre supposed to be on the offensive.

Am I the only one who actually isn't big on the whole pop system? I mean, don't get me wrong though, I **LOVE** DEI as a mod!
I like it. And if the AI spams too many army's because population doesn't affect them, well then install a mod with an army cap..
However I never have this problem because I play on normal. DEI is balanced for normal. Why don't you like the pop system?
There's a submod which delets it. There are other submods aswell

Same. It's DEI Rome. I hope every campaign eventually gets overhauled by DEI. I think they will. Except Empire divided I heard from one off the modders (Summary?) because it would take like 4 years ... Then again I can see them still do it.
I downloaded mods recently for Rome 2 (emperor edition) and none of them work nor display them selves in-game what do I do?
I’m here to propose DEI fans “unionize” and drive the fundraising for a new game. DEI developers have done so much with very little, and CA doesn’t have what it takes to make the game we all desire. This should be done!
One modder, not sure if it's one guy or a team, is doing it actually for a new Medieval 3. Not with this name but similar.
ROME 2 DEI is a great mod where more in depth for politics, population, supplies for army, weather factor etc where wish was more indepth for these factors. however for me doesn't address two of the most fundamental issues. this being the lack of towns and cities in the grand campaign map. there are keys towns and cities that need to be added. they are in certain campaigns like caser and gaul, republic italy and greece but this those campaigns only deal with a small part of the known world. i know what the response going to be that the game only allows a certain amount of town and cities but still it needs to be sorted. the other factors that ties into the amount of town and cities is the deck of units in each army. where can only recruit 20 units in a pack. with the pack being in effect a legion and we all know how big a legion was. the standard thing is to increase the amount in each unit but with that you lose maneuver, there is a mod i used a while ago where you could increase the units from 20 to 70 units or more in a pack but with that due to the lack of cities and towns you cant support multiple legions that size.
I love d.e.i but hate how the A.I jus spams armies of hoplites and then stacks em on top of each other on the field and just pushes its way through your lines no matter what.

Honestly, DeI is a completely new game. I tried playing vanilla and it's unplayable to me after playing DeI

@@jasonargos110 Am I glad I bought it in 2020, and last year I finally bought a great gaming 💻 First I used like 30 mods. Now only dei and submods and also some graphical mods.
And honestly on my I9 12900H 💻 with an rtx 3080 2x16gb ddr5 ram, it looks great. The load times are also short, because I have SSD.
Now about the game again. I love the new Mithradetic wars campaign. Also the Macedonian wars are fun. And CIG stays one off my favorites too especially with DEI. When there ROTR campaign is fully done I will play it too.
I've tried so many times to get into DEI but I get hammered at the start as rome no matter what I do. I always get bum rushed by Epiros with significantly better units amd no mattre how tactically sound I plan at best I can get a phyiric defeat and then from that point it's basically a slow downfall as I try to hold on with what I have and balancing it qith an increasingly hostile public order. I'm no spring chicken to tw or even overhaul mods that make tw titles more challenging but for whatever reason starting as Rome in DEI is just beyond me but all I want to do is play as rome.
Hey mate. I’ve done it like 50 times on vh/vh. Here’s what I do. One legio build troops and rush Taras in the south held by Epirus.
Other legio fight those Etruscan’s to make your first complete province. Keep Syracuse friendly. It’s annoying but you can keep one of the northern Gauls as an ally if you help them kill the other. Buys you time if carthage gets brave. Keep Syracuse friendly unless you are strong enough to rush it.
If all that fails then use an easy diplomacy mod for a single turn to cheat non aggressions with carthage and Syracuse to buy you time to fight Epirus fairly. Hope that helps. I hated the idea of a gamer not leading his DEI legios in a 400 turn campaign. All the best Imperator
you pretty much have to save scum on your first plathrough. I must have restarted averni 20 times and at farther times (which pissed me off) because i would get backed into a corner, until i learned to somewhat protect enemy moves

Very late to the party Andy but I just bought the game and no matter what I try, I don't get the "gore" and blood look the way like in your videos. I have the respective DLC and tried several mods. What mod are you using for that?
As a former Total War: Rome player (I haven't played it in like 10 years). Should I go with Rome remastered or Rome 2 (never played). Medieval 2 was the last one I played.

@@haha-on5fd But Ancient Empires vanilla is very unfinished. Ancient Empires with Garviels revamp Mod or even classical Empires on the other hand are 12TPY

Undoubtedly DeI has already become the new vanilla R2TW💯. Though it's a bit sad that it's almost become an accepted fact that the modding community has to correct each and every problem the developers are not supposed to make in the first place.

Playing on normal and it evens out. I crushed Carthage.
I dont like in Rome 2, that cities have lack of space for buildings. Only few slot which you can choce. In reality it works like paper, stone scisors. You need to balance between 3 factors: food, happines, profits. I withs that CA could give a little bit of more access to main mechanics of the game, which are cruicial. I dont care about new Warhammer games. Rome 2 and Attila were my 2 last Total War which I bought.
Same men although I bought the rome remastered too for Imperium surrectum and nostalgia.
