Now this is a Brightline station. It's amazing how this future evolved. Passengers being picked up at the Ft. Lauderdale station once again after 60 years with no passenger service.
History will repeat itself on 19 May 2018 when the inaugural Brightline service over the same [albeit completely rebuilt] FEC tracks from MiamiCentral station to Fort Lauderdale commences.
I grew up near the North Miami station as well. By the way, it appears in an 'I Love Lucy' episode (not a set piece---the actual station) when they did a few episodes set in Miami in the late 50s.
The Observation car shown in this video; "Saint Lucie Sound" was preserved and is kept in fine shape for tourists on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad in Ohio.
FECR's ALL ABOARD FLORIDA will be a private passenger train service which will run between Miami and Orlando starting in 2014. It will have only 2 stops, one in Fort Lauderdale and one in West Palm Beach and in some portions will develop speeds up to 100 miles per hour and up to 125 miles per hour......It will also have WIFI internet service and a choice of dining options.....The full trip from Miami to Orlando will be just 3 hours...The project is PRIVATE, unlike AMTRAK. ZERO TAX MONEY.
Quite a bit has evolved since your post some 5-years ago. Brightline, as the service was renamed, commenced service between Ft Lauderdale and West Palm Beach in January 2018; service to Miami will commence this Saturday, 19 May 2018. Orlando is some 3-years into the future.
Where were all of the passengers for this little train. Were you the only one riding? I remember after the strike they ran this for a few years. I guess people were scared of getting blown up by riding on the FEC back in the 1960's. Thank you for posting.
I don't know why it's taking them so long through. 14 years mate? Just to go from Orlando to Miami? Come on man. The continental rail road didn't take that long. And they where using picks and hammers.
North Miami station opened in 1955 and Fort Lauderdale in 1956. Don't know when they were torn down but I am guessing sometime in the 70s. If anyone knows please post!
No, Tri-Rail runs on the former Seaboard line now used by Amtrak. FEC has not had regular passenger service since 1968 when permission was obtained to discontinue this train.
Took FEC from Titusville to Miami in 1952 - 1/2 grapefruit cost me 1.50 Food was much higher then compared to AMTRAK today. I used to stand about 30ft from tracks when southbound would come thru Titusville the suction mad me feel safer sitting on the ground.
I do understand there are talks of Amtrak running their trains on the FEC from Jacksonville to West Palm Beach, for the rest of the way to Miami the train will go over to the CSX/Tri-rail tracks. The FEC passenger station when was it built and torn down?
I think you got it right. There were no other passengers that day, and I think it was largely because of sabotage during the strike. But also because the through service beyond Jacksonville to key cities in the East and Midwest on the East Coast Champion, City of Miami and the others was rerouted. Permanently as it turned out.
@binzoclone there were never many passengers during this time. what i remember for sure is for the entire period of passenger service in the 60's the train averaged about 16 riders a day

Right in the midst of the FEC’s strike years too! Loved the video!
Thanks so much for posting this as it's so difficult to find videos of past Florida passenger rail service.
Boy, do I remember those days. My favorite locos, E's and F's.

@jslasher1 Service to Orlando just started last week. Looking at these posts from years ago seems like going back in a time machine.

The North Miami station was still standing in 1982ish when I saw it, It was a DMV office.
