This is why I would tweak the current format to a combination of the old Chase and the current Playoff system. Keep the same regular season points and race formats but with 25 races(instead of 26) plus a 9 race Playoff for a total of 34 races(instead of 36).
12 drivers will make the Playoffs, the Top 10 in points make the Playoffs(with the same bonus points for finishing in the Top 10 as now). Plus two wild cards which can be either drivers with wins that are within the Top 25 in points or the 11th and 12th place drivers in points if there are no other winners.
      Playoffs are as follows...
      Round of 12
      3 races
      Round of 8
      3 races
      Championship 4
      3 races
Win and advance remains in the Playoffs, Playoff Points are carried into each round, but in the Championship 4 round Stage wins are worth an extra 5 points and race wins are worth an extra 15 points. Whoever has the most points at the end is the Champion 🏆

The absurd part isn't that he didn't win, it's that he's scored as 5th in points.
With the original Chase format and no resets, he would've been around 3rd in points and Elliott still wins the title. The format helped him by giving him like a +30 points lead at the start of each round no matter how well he was actually racing, but it also hurt him by punishing him too harshly for like two bad races.

You hit the nail right on the head Darian.
The direction in which NASCAR is headed in is absolutely frightening.
Add the points system to the list of reasons, and you have one of the numerous reasons as to why the Bill France Cup is not as sought after of an automobile racing championship prize as it once was. Scott Dixon said it best in a comparison and contrast video with Jimmie Johnson on CGR's UA-cam Channel. The playoff system was his biggest turn-off.
The playoff system has looked good on paper and it is fun to go back through history to see what would have happened if the playoff system were implemented in the years leading up to 2004 and beyond, but it has gone to showcase why the best drivers in North America are in IndyCar this year, and why the Astor Cup and the World Driver's Championship are more prestigious championship prizes in the sport of automobile racing.
NASCAR doesn't need playoffs for the sake of entertainment. That factor will come into play, just look at the battle between Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen right now in the current fight for the World Driver's Championship.

Kevin Harvick is a top 10 all timer who was thrown into the most pressured situation any rookie in probably any sports division has ever been. He was thrown into the water and told to swim. Not only did he swim but he saved the sinking ship by winning at Atlanta. Went on to have a great career with RCR, which we later find was clearly overachieving. Went on to become the dominant driver since his move to SHR. The fact that year 20 was as good as it was says everything about him. I dont care about the outcome last year, we remember 9 wins in year 20. And every now and then I cant help but think of how proud the Intimidator has to be that Richard's pick for his replacement, has had this kind of career.

It's really sad and pathetic from Nascar to let 10 months of hard work from the teams come down to ONE race where you could be taken out, caught up in somebody else's mess or have a tire go down, whatever. One way that might fix the system:
    1. Eliminate the 'Win and you advance' policy
    2. Let season wins determine tiebreaker between points (if both tied in points then let it be whoever beats who)
    3. Just award more points for race wins
Boom now you need to have a combination of both winning and consistency.

Thats season puts a nail to a coffin of stewart haas racing. The harvick incident made them irrevelant and inconsistent most of the weekends. After losing major sponsor and harvick, its clear that Gene and Tony have decided to shut its doors and end the SHR as we know it…😢

Last year both Harvick and briscoe had their championships runs sacrificed for the better of nascar and its dumb playoff system. They both won the most races last season and still lost the championships.

I got tired of NASCAR around 2003 and as soon as Rusty Wallace retired I more or less quit caring, I cheered for Jeff Burton for a little while and eventually just quit watching races by 2012. It sucks, NASCAR was the first sport I ever followed or cared about. It's changed so much that it's unrecognizable to me now

Dam do I miss the Winston cup points system..I'd settle for the system when it was the Nextel cup with he old chase format but this stuff today isn't half as good.

If take the Nextel Cup system back for sure even. The final 4 format is stupid

@@packisbetter90 it's like people have said.... You can win the first 35 races and if you come in 2nd in the last one, you loose the championship. That's insane. The odds of that are astronomical but still....

@@DNSV-ex8of Also can happen in the old Winston Cup Format. Fans have to make a choice. As a fan I don't really care how a champion is crown as long as is fair across the board for all teams. But if fans want the old system they have to live that most years the championship will be mathematical over by race 35 and Realistically over by race 26.

i have an alternative solution: instead of the elimination, do the 10 race Chase from 2011-2012, BUT offer a 30 point bonus to the winner of the season finale to keep it interesting.
