It's weird that a driver in the Cup Series could win every pole, every stage, win 35 races and lead every lap except the last lap and finish 4th in the standings
Kvapil Nation That’s what I’ve been saying. Would actually be funny to see that happen just to watch NASCAR sweat trying to justify it.
Or any of the top 3 series
NASCAR: Sounds about right to us.
@@horsecrazyviking7121 maybe they should make it so that you can make the top 16 without a win, but not the final 4. So if you are winless to that point you better hury up and get a win. Problem with that solved
@@racegrubb2152 that's stupid. What if there isn't 16 race winners? Then you get in by points.
This whole format is the dumbest championship format ever. It's over the top gimmicky.
Crafton has a combined 3 wins in his 3 titles, yet a 6 win season wasn’t enough to win the title.
Crafton is the man that can wreck any points format..
That just proves it's not the format, but the driver that matters
@@natedoan5070 Or that NASCAR's format changes have the opposite effect from what was intended...
@@imapopo2924 but the other 2 worked beautifully. Especially the Xfinity, which is ideally what Nascar (and fans) want see with *this format.*
Crafton was the joker card to Nascar's playoff format this year. Also in the end, he finished higher than the other 3.
@@jamesdb7115 To make it even funnier his stat line from 2019 was almost identical to that of his 2013 championship season:
2019:
0 wins, 7 top 5s, 18 top 10s, 3 poles, 3291 laps completed, 44 laps led, 7.3 avg. start, 8.8 avg. finish, 1 DNF, 20 LLF
2013:
1 win, 7 top 5s, 19 top 10s, 0 poles, 3391 laps completed, 87 laps led, 10 avg. start, 7.9 avg. finish, 0 DNF, 22 LLF
His 2014 championship stats are slightly better, but he earned 2 fewer top 10s, had a worse average starting spot and had 1 more DNF in comparison to 2019.
to me its just a bit ridiculous, the champion of a series/competition should be considered the best in that series. im from england so really into my f1 where they have the traditional points system lewis hamilton won the title before the last race this season, yet people still watched that race n had a big attendance.......oh n who won that race........the guy who was best that season.....
Nascar: "you gotta win to be a champion"
Matt Crafton: "you gotta be consistent to be a champion..."
Agustin Cesar he broke the playoff format ;)
Playoffs don’t belong in Motorsports
I believe in consistency myself
Benny Parsons: I like this guy
They did say, at the Championship 4 highest positioning car to win the championship…but they didn’t say it has to be a win. A non playoff driver can win the race and one the Playoffs drivers will finish runner up to win the championship. That’s the highest they can go.
Matt Kenseth liked this
>looks up the official upload of the Truck Series finale race

lmao, they know
@Rocky2689 Because the same arguments were happening over there.
@Rocky2689 so whats your point!?
They were all like, SHUT, IT, DOWN!
McJohnson because they’re going to comment that Crafton should retire
@@MegaMr46 The truck series champion should retire. He's clearly washed up
Also he only led 44 laps in 2019 lol
Jim France needs to start undoing more of Brian France's blunders!
Mr Awesome are you mad or something? It’s just funny
It's great because most people don't realize that he was a serious contender with 0 wins. he had a solid amount of top 10s and top 5s, and an incredible average finish.
@@SeanCampbell_iRacing 44 more than you too funny boi
Mr Awesome lol k
Fact: The playoff system is outdated and has been altered more than any other points system in NASCAR’s history, making the champion each season almost unpredictable in recent years. Basically, the playoffs need to go. We need a fresh new points system that can balance wins and consistency.
I guess? But making a whole new one would make more sense, in my opinion
I like the old points system. If they want to have the playoffs they have now just make the last 8 cars of the Chase race the last 4 races and the most points wins the championship. It wouldn't be a whole lot different than doing the old points cause the best is going to come to the top like normal.
You wanna reward wins and consistency?have the champ be the guy with the most points across the whole season, no fucking playoffs needed
Fact: ball sports gimmicks like the elimination chase and stages do not belong in Motorsports
BlazeMasterGaming preach, bud
I've always been a huge Matt Crafton fan But I too was in shock when he won the Championship And it proves that NASCAR's playoff system needs to be abolished
Why you people whining Matt Crafton won deal with
I never said I had a problem with Crafton winning the championship, I was happy he won the Championship But it felt surreal
Larry Jellison because playoffs don’t belong in Motorsports. And I’m a Crafton fan
@@IanTheMotorsportsMan_YT I was just as surprised as you Ian, and I was happy for Crafton too. Tbh, I didn't think he would be in the championship 4.
@@kjprodouctions9050 I'm a Crafton fan, but I felt more disgusted than happy because of the broken format
Correction on why Crafton left KHI:
In an interview Harvick said he was happy with how Crafton performed, but said him and Matt were good friends off of the track until he drove for Kevin. They both agreed to part ways because they didn’t get along on the business side of things, but became buds again after Matt rejoined ThorSport.
Makes you wonder if the KHI deal worked out if Crafton then would have drove for RCR.
@@KR_Diecasts He actually drove for RCR in xfinity in 2013 and 2014 for a total of 4 races, but this is most likely because of his relationship with Menards. He was also on standby for RCR in 2014 in cup when Paul Menard’s wife was getting ready to give birth.
@@cashkenterprises5584 I knew that I meant like for example if he took over the 07 instead of Dave Blaney
I wish it was "Exposing The System: The Ryan Newman Story" back in 2014. He's both my favorite driver, and would have saved us 5 years.
Newman would have won the race, so it wouldn't have been a winless champion.
SinikkaL yes but he didn’t necessarily
have to win
He didn’t have to win he just had to finish 2nd that race without one of the other playoff drivers winning
Would have been impossible since Harvick was ahead of him and won.
@@DerrickRG exactly that would be conquered the system
Can we all agree that stage racing and the playoffs are absolutely horrendous?
I'll jump on that boat.
I like stage racing because of the extra points but I think that the cautions after the stages should be taken out
n o
The playoffs are great and stage racing needs to be tweaked by taking out the cautions.
@@Bodhes something like "leading at the halfway point nets you x amount of points" would probably be better.
This proves 2 things...
There was NOTHING wrong with the Winston Cup Points format in the first place & This current format is so FUBAR that should not exist in NASCAR.
Winston Cup format was a points sink that was gradually becoming more and more irrelevant as reliability increased. With that said, it's still a metric f* ton better then the current format.
@@FallingPicturesProductions Irrelevant...are you serious!!! I disagree 100% with this statement. Last time I checked, the Winston Cup points format required 3 things:
1. Consistency
2. No DNF's
3. ...and WINNING!!!!
@@SIMCOMotorsportsTV The 1999, 2000, and 2003 championships showed that times were changing. In all of those years the championship was decided before the season was over, often by drivers who didn't make alot of noise but just ran silently Top 15 week in and out. By 2003 a massive hole was blown in by Kenseth utterly collapsing in the final third of the season and it not changing a single thing.
Falling Pictures Productions...umm no. If you finished 15th every week you'd never win a championship w/the old system b/c what others drivers do/don't do, plays a major role with who ends up winning at the end. Btw, 2 things are certain; too many ppl make the playoffs, and winless drivers shouldn't make the playoffs b/c the Crafton issue, and Newman [almost in 2014] shouldn't ever happen.
@@FallingPicturesProductions Kenseth won the title in 03' because he met the 3 criteria I mentioned...he won 1 race, he was most consistent, and had less DNF's while a guy like Ryan Newman that year had 7 or 8 wins; but, guess what...he kept blowing engines and kept wrecking. That is why he never won the championship at the end because he didnt meet the consistency criteria
NASCAR really be striking Darian for exposing them too hard
They don't want you to know
they deserve to be exposed hard
What In Carnation? They can't take being wrong, I guess. Keselowski was right, they are clowns.
Nasscar needs to shove it up their ass. They suck now
Nice Kevin Harvick quote Rob Fowler but there is just one s in NASCAR FYI
Awesome as usual, Darian!
This is proof that the playoff system is completely flawed. Hats off to Crafton for exposing the system.
He gave one of the biggest f yous to the system ever
@@jackietang3789 Indeed!
This is why playoffs have no place in racing.
@@bhumiriady it's a shame Allgaier even though he had one win but still, couldn't do the same the day after Crafton won it. It would've nice to see back to back f yous to the system lol
@@jackietang3789 I know right?
I would love to see Allgaier pull off the same thing as Crafton.
what about kyle busch
Crafton essentially did what Ryan Newman *ALMOST* did in the Cup Series in 2014.
#AbolishThePlayoffs
#GoBackTo2011ChaseFormat
@Zachary Rugar
That format relies too much on consistency, wins aren't valued as much under that format.
The championship format needs to be a 50/50 balance of winning and consistency, which for me, the 2011 format is the closest that accomplishes this.
Also in a buisness perspective, the format also needs to be legitimate (as in title battles occurring naturally) and entertaining (which manages to keep fans invested even when the points battle is sizeable).
@Zachary Rugar But those series have good point structures, in which NASCAR cannot seem to produce..
NASCAR: Thats too hard to do
@@Michael29Shell So double the amount of points given for a win, or something. There's no need to have bogus point resets at some arbitrary part of the season.
Anyone who played nascar 99 and played the season mode in the first cut scene in the game benny parsons said it best “consistency consistency consistency”
He shouldn't have won the championship, but I'm glad he did, because he gave NASCAR's shitty points system a huge middle finger.
Yeah, but I don't think NASCAR will budge.
yeah, fuck the playoffs lol
@@lorddrac_dontaskmetodance It wouldn't surprise me, they've fallen so far at this point.
Why not? Every single team raced the same races by the same rules. There was no hanky panky, just good strategy and a lot of luck.
@@willyjimmy8881 I'm just saying, under the 2003 points format, he wouldn't have won, so yeah.
My Nephew is a huge Matt Crafton fan. Definitely fun to see him pull this off.
Imagine if Newman would have won the 2014 championship still without winning a race
Kevin Harvick could do it this year
This format would’ve never made it more then another year or two
Marco Evens he would’ve had a non playoff driving Leading and him finish in second
It would be terribly undeserving, but at the same time, it’s a good thing to see a broke format get damaged even more
In the first season of the playoff format, no less.
Just saying, the 1971-2003 Championship format never had a winless champion.
They had two one win Champions, who were no slouch, Matt Kenseth and Benny Parsons, and underdog, Alan Kulwicki, now we can have a winless champion, that is not right
Actually there was with Austin Dillon
@@Ob1tuber Alan Kulwicki had 2 wins in 1992, just saying

and why would it be bad if it did
Good video. While this may prove go some that the current playoff system is flawed, it simultaneously proves that the playoff system can be done over by the right driver in the right situation, a dash of luck and pure circumstance.
Crafton earned this victory. He just played by the rules given to him and won fair and square.
That music towards the end was very triumphant sounding. Great video!

Heres why crafton deserved the championship
He had 18 top 10s the 2nd most top 10s
Had an 8.8 average finish
Had the least amount of dnfs in the season as a full time driver with one
His consitency helped him make the final 4
Here's why Crafton did not deserve the championship
7 top 5's
His last top 5 before Homestead was when Greg Biffle won in his first appearance in the Trucks in 15 years
Grant Enfinger had a better winless season than him this year
I'm not trying to criticize you, it's just an opinion.
@@nachoalvarez7171 I see more reasons why he deserved it than why he didn't. Crafton did everything right to win the championship.

Why does everyone seem to forget that Austin Dillon won the 2013 Xfinity title without a win? This has happened before.

i mean but that's on all sports, if we take into account only the teams that have been winning there's a small chance a team that didn't perform at all during the year could win the championship
@@dark3rthanshadows No, you have to actually win in other sports to even be in the championship to begin with.
NASCAR wants to be right in everything... and if they aren’t, they be like: hahahaha nope....we gonna block you
NASCAR has been trying to recreate the 92 cup series final race for 27 years and counting and still cant do it even with manufactured chaos. Its sad honestly
The ONLY finales that looked almost the same to the 92 finale was the 2004 and 2011 finale. Even with the playoff system, this year's race didn't even feel like a championship race, it felt artificial, with trash racing.

Great video. Always entertaining and knowledgable. And it is a great story to tell. Some of us fans remember the constants in the sport and Crafton is one of the favorites to me.
He’s still the 2nd driver to win a title without a win. Austin Dillon did it in 2013 even though it wasn’t the playoff format, still counts as a winless champion
Hornish should have won that but NASCAR kept the caution out for Dillon
I really hope you have your tin foil hat on, douche bag.
For those talking about Dillon's championship in 2013, only 3 regulars actually won a race that season, and there were only 4 wins between them (Regan Smith, Trevor Bayne, and Sam Hornish Jr.). I wouldn't blame the format for that one.

Thank you for such an excellent and well explained video! I wasn't following Truck Series this year, so I learned a lot from this. Thank you Black Flags Matter for making such a great video!
Matt Crafton has always been my favorite because he was sponsored by Menards, and my favorite cup series driver was Paul Menard so my tiny brain at the time connected the two and he was the only truck driver I supported
Everybody thought he would move to Xfinity Series and Cup Series full time for long time ago.

I fully expect some changes to the playoff format within the next couple of years now that this has happened
Jake Owens the chase was better. But I rather not have a postseason format in Motorsports
Yeah but knowing NASCAR it will probably make it worse.
HorseCrazyViking I don’t know, since Brian France left, NASCAR has been in a fix. They’re still fixing NASCAR, but it’s still taking time

Matt crafton is so underrated probably the most consistent driver in all of trucks he deserved the 2019 championship in 23 races he finished in the top 10 18 times and would only have 1 DNF and it was an engine failure at martinsville that’s it.he may not have won races but he was a 5th to 7th place driver pretty much all year long I think if Matt crafton gets a fourth championship I think he could be considered one of the greats if he already is I’m a Matt crafton fan for life
How is that for your 'game 7 moment' Nascar haha
The Original CONSISTENCY BOI
6:23 he spun out Frieza..
Good bye Earth..😭
Looking back on this now, it’s still pretty crazy that it happened. But it’s nothing compared to Daniel Hemric being in the final 4 in Xfinity. Because of that, there’s a chance that he could become, to my knowledge, the only driver ever to win a championship in a top 3 series without winning a race in his entire career. That’s another level of insanity.
I've said this from day 1, took a few years for it to happen. Nonetheless, he found a way to do it.
Ryan Newman also disproved it a few years back... never won a race and finished second (and was running Harvick down)at Homestead putting him 2nd in points after he made the Chase.
Didn’t deserve it, the format is garbage and it doesn’t belong in racing
7:23 I got confused and thought I was watching Summoning Salt for a moment, lol
Brain was like, "Wait, is he about to set a world record?"
This chase format is another reason why NASCAR has gone down the toilet
NASCAR:
2003: Total bullshit no way Kenseth should've won the championship, new points format
2019: Fuck
That's so cool, I always liked the truck series; great racing. Sweet video, I appreciate it.
I love it!! Break the system!
I remember when Nicky Hayden won the AMA Superbike championship without winning a race that season, all the other contenders that year threw a huge stink. It wasn't even some weird playoff system, just a regular points championship; Hayden was more consistent and it paid off.
The problem is second still gives way too many points relative to first, there needs to be at least a 25% jump from 2nd to 1st in the finishing order
I have a ton of respect for Crafton he's definitely one of the greatest Truck Series drivers ever. I also have a huge amount of respect for what Nascar has done with the playoffs even if I'm not the biggest fan of it but the fact that a driver can win a championship without winning a race that season scares the crap out of me.
Let’s all hope 2020 is the final year for this nonsense
Sadly not
Shades of Alan Kulwicki in '92 with his calculated climb
Alan had two wins
Matt pulled a 2014 Ryan Newman but won the championship
Not really. If Newman won the championship that year it would have been because he passes Harvick for the lead and the win.
That is of course in that situation if Harvick was eliminated in the previous round, and he still finished second. Then Ryan would had been an winless champion.
Matt Crafton: Did you hear that Tyler?
Tyler Johnson: Hear about what?
Matt Crafton: I heard that Hailie Deegan is gonna be with DGR Crosley.

Tyler Johnson: What type of car?
Matt Crafton: She's gonna be racing a Ford.
Tyler Johnson: Are you kidding me?
Tyler Johnson: That is my Favorite car manufacturer.
Normal races, normal stock cars (I'm talking about the 90's and early 00's), normal tracks, and a normal points system. Boom, fixed your problem NASCAR...
Stockcars weren't normal in the late 90s and 00s. Gen 3 was the last of a stock era. Bubble car Taurus and bubble MCs. the Dodge Charger was crazy weird too.
Look for next-gen to be as close to stock since the early Monte Carlo and Thunderbirds of the 80s.
@@jamesdb7115 Good point, let's hope they go back to the basics of the whole series as well.
I WAS AT THE VEGAS TRUCK RACE! I went with my dad, mom, and brother. I remember we were joking about how Sauter kept going out over and over again, and how we joked Jo Cobb would be DSQ'd because she kept going out and into pit road and going so slow. Honestly, THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN THE YEAR THE SYSTEM WAS IMPLEMENTED IN THE CUP SERIES! 2014 Ryan Newman did not win ONCE and came 2nd.
Matt proved that the "Play-offs" is absolutely artificial garbage. Get rid of this (and those stupid stages disguised as caution clocks) and do what EVERY OTHER closed circuit series does: no play-offs, regular season is from 1st to last race decides the true champion.
This is your best video ever!!!
