I was once a LEO that had to deploy a CAR-15 from a car window. I was riding shotgun and had to turn around in the seat to get the rifle out of the window and pointed to the rear. I’m completely sold on these things as a truck gun. I went with a pistol lower, the high end 10.5 upper, a BTR brace and 3 MOA mini green dot. My goal is a 25 yard defensive tool.
    Edit: 06/08/24
The qualities that make the CAR-15/GAU a great weapon are its size and weight. I recently bought a TNTE 11.5” pencil barrel to replace my significantly heavier weight barrel. From 1 to 100 yard/meters it’s all I need. I have no desire to run 500 rounds through it during a day at the range. What I may need are 5 rounds in 3 to 5 seconds. Accuracy? Minute of chest cavity out to a hundred whatever.

Recently bought a PSA AR15 SBA3 lower and married it to a DD MK18 upper. Aside from a slight difference in the coloring it is a match made in Heaven. The lower was tight at first but is smoothing out in the break-in period. High quality lower (equal to any of my Colt company guns I've run in the past or currently) at just over two bills you can't complain. And there shipping, which historically has been a complaint, was fast. You can take your savings one step further and look out for their blemished uppers and lowers. Even better deals.
There are snobs in every segment of the market...gun buyers included...hell I bought a DD upper (but at a good price). I guess that's why a fool and his money are easily separated.

PSA does have an occasional QC problem but if you go over a PSA product and inspect it with a fine tooth comb and fix any minor issues, it will perform as good as the upper tier brands, especially if you get a kit with the FN CHF barrels, which are be coming somewhat scarce at PSA.

Enough velocity and gas dwell time to make get the needed reliability (out of the gun and the 5.56 round) and yet handles well in and out of vehicles and in and out of rooms.
      If a 12. 5” isn’t possible I too would prefer a 11.5” over this 10.5”. YMMV

I recently did a PSA 16" kit build with the Magpul furniture. 600 rounds to test it, including a class, and it runs great. Using it as a truck gun and I'm very happy for sub $400. I also helped my buddy build one of their 10.5" pistols with the KAK Brace. Same kit as this with the MLOK rail and a different grip. He has 1500 or so rounds through it without a hiccup. LOUD and snappy gun, but it came out nice for the money. I like premium builds, but the two PSA builds I've done have convinced me that if you need a cheap spare or a truck gun, these are a great option.

I got the pistol kit with the Magpul furniture and SBA3 brace. I'm really glad I spent the extra money for that. The staking on the gas key sucks but for the price it's not a huge deal. I bought a staking tool from Brownelles. Only put 80 rounds through mine but it seems fine so far. I mainly bought it to satisfy my want for an AR pistol and with the SBA3 collapsed all the way it fits in an M60 barrel bag so it's a little more discreet and easier to transport to the range than my carbines.

Brownells to the best of my knowledge sell the retro upper and lowers separately. They are not cheap however they are new production and every reviewer I have seen says they are accurate as they can be. Some small parts, like the dial on the hand guard and the dust cover, are not correct because those parts have not been manufactured in decades. Brownells has said they are trying to get correct versions of those kind of parts made but it takes time.

Ben Reid I’m in no way suggesting that PSA is better quality than DD. I’m just suggesting Ski’s test was legit/unbiased and had results. This says that any rifle can fail, maybe if you took all productions PSA fails 5% more than DD (just throwing a number out there) but do you know it would for certain, 100% are you sure?? No one does nor can we be. However, in Ski’s test his DD failed catastrophically, there just no getting around it. By you bringing up the temperature/season says you probably have some biased towards DD (no offense intended, we all do). Moderate/slight variations in temperature should have no effect on the complete failure of a top end rifle, I’d imagine you know that though. I’ve worked for BMW in the past and their owners expect no issues in their cars because they are expensive, most find out quickly they are waaay more likely to have issues than a Toyota Camry. I think the same logic applies with top end rifles. Times have changed PSA is making quality stuff in the past few years. That’s all I’m saying.

Just bought a PSA 10.5 upper, pistol lower and a complete 16in AR from them! Cant wait to get it! You cant beat their deals, plus they make a great quality gun. This guy did a 5000 round "torture" test on SEVERAL AR-15s and the PSA rifle beat all of the "high valued" ARs Ie. Daniel Defense. Ill take this gun any day of the week.

Pierce Foss yep. I saw one article saying they would be around $800. Seems expensive to me relatively speaking for PSA. They are selling their AK for $500. But MP5 could be worth it. Everything I've gotten from them has been super reliable and well made.

PSA is awesome. They price their AR’s so every American can own one, even on a tight budget. I went with the Kel-tec rdb they had on sale for $749 though because it’s the same length but has a full length 17.4” barrel. Happy shooting.

  • @65stang98

finally got my 10.5 running good. Was so overgassed not even an h3 buffer with a super 42 spring could slow it down enough to where ti would shoot 55 grain without bolt bounce. 62 grain itd eat up no problem but 55 wouldnt even function. So got an adjustable gas block and sadly had to ditch the a2 front sight as i really wanted that on my build. Settled by ordering some DD irons to go on the quad rail. All in all im pretty please with the build.

I had trouble with the old psa stuff as far as fit and finish I have it one more try a year ago with a 16” nitride build kit, I have been incredibly impressed I zeroed it and broke it in with a 1-4x scope and shot a coyote at 100 yards the following weekend. My results are right on par with yours about 1.5 MOA at 100 yards from a rest. But you can’t help but smile and look at a budget rifle when you’re hitting at 400 yards when you only have $400 into it. I believe psa had a learning curve for a little bit and got on top of everything. I’d trust my life and my hunt to my rifle now, and at $400 for the thing I don’t feel bad about scratches and scrapes

Thought I'd post an update. I shot 100 rounds through mine today. It was a joy to shoot. It ate tula, federal, winchester and wolf without a single hiccup. I dont know how palmetto can put kits like this out there and turn any kind of profit with these prices, but I'm sure glad they do. I'm looking forward to giving it a proper workout soon.

I got a Hardened Arms 10.5" upper on a PSA lower & color me very impressed so far within the first 500+ round of brass & steel case ammo. I would really like to do this on this pistol, but don't want to remove my Primary Arms 1X6 Acss scope from my PSA Premium AR 15 build, with all of their higher end parts. Love it. I will admit that I am a PSA fan.

The cool factor is off the charts for these. The benefit to such a small cartridge is that you can run a super short barrel with no issues and no crazy recoil. However, I think a 16" is still the best overall AR build. A 16" barrel AR built to be light and versatile is the best all around rifle in my opinion. These are awesome. But I wouldn't use a pistol AR as a replacement for a carbine. I just think the carbine is the best all around choice and is unmatched in versatility.

For a truck gun you might as well run a full 16” upper. It’s still has plenty of maneuverability, and the barrel velocity is much faster than a 10”. If your car can’t fit a full length barrel then my next choice would be an 11.5”, kind of like GarandThumbs setup
