Maybe strikes are why they have paid-vacations. Ryanair pilots are presently on strike in my country, I support them (they accepted 20% cuts during covid, but Ryanair refuse to give their salary back). No more 20 euro flight to Marseille, I will have to take the train to Provence next month. :)

My first time in France was a study abroad in college with a big group from my university. Let's just say that the ladies were very happy with the bal des pompiers.
If Americans had been more often on strike, they'd surely have a better health system and more vacations. And don't forget that these two things that you appreciate so much in France have been obtained after many strikes.
I lived in the US for some years. There, showing kids bloody killings in films or series is correct, but showing à little tit, what an horror !! Also, a young guy aged 18 can enroll in the army and get killed, but not drink a single beer can before he is 21...
As a french student in the U.S who has had troubles adjusting the AC that is everywhere here, I understand how it can be disturbing when you're not used to the country's habits with A.C.
But from what I've noticed, most Americans can't get used to no A.C because they don't know how to keep their place cool without it. It might not be easy with American architecture because it was not built for this, but most buildings in the south of france or just in France in general were built to adapt natural climate conditions. So you have to work with the tools you have to prevent heat from getting to you, and I assure you it will make a difference:
-Close the blinds to prevent as many sunlight to enter your room.
-keep windows closed during the day and open everything when the cooling evening arrives, you might wanna sleep with the windows open but you have to close them before the heat arrives in the morning.
-If you can choose your room, try not to pick one that it at the last floor under the roof, these are the worst because they get all the heat from the sun first.
-have fans everywhere
-old stone buildings were built so people could survive the heat, so they are usually better for isolation.

Hello, I disagree. All the shops or post or anything are not closed during summer. Supermarkets are opened, groceries, and if a bakery is closed, the other one not so far is open, and so on. Luckily because how would we leave ?

I totally get vacation in France. My birthday is in July and wanted to celebrate it I France. I expected all to be closed…and pleasant and surprised when things were open. Even the grocery on Sunday morning! I now have spent it in Bordeaux and French Polynesia. Planning next year!
Except in the small villages, as a general rule, traders manage to take turns taking holidays so that there is always one open. In my city of 5000 inhabitants, there are 3 bakeries, 2 pharmacies and 2 tobacconists, they are never closed at the same time during the summer. Of course, you have to adapt and during this period go to the bakery or the pharmacy which is 3 streets away, but it's not very inconvenient.
On the other hand, in places not known to be touristic, there are fewer choices of restaurants open, especially between the end of July and mid-August.
We did take a holiday this summer as it was our 30th anniversary, but since I run a gîte, we take our vacations off season. We also usually drive for our vacations but it’s so we can take back more wine and not pay shipping! My funniest guest memory from my gîte was a French family staying and she emailed me, asking if I had more pool towels. I gathered them and walking them to the bamboo that separates the gîte from our place. She was out on a pool lounger in sun. She got up and she was topless! We had a brief conversation about the pool temp and a reservation for a local restaurant and she took the towels.

I just got back from Paris yesterday. I saw a lot of "fermez" businesses undergoing refurbishment-contractors and carpenters doing their thing, etc.
Hadn’t thought about it before, but it seemed obvious when I saw it: of *course* businesses use the vacation period to make repairs and upgrades.
Especially since insurances FORCE businesses and shops to make upgrade or refurbishment works once every two years at a minimum... Completely stupid imo.

Reading the majority of the comments below makes me wondering why so many tourists come to France ? This country is where I live and I consider that I am very lucky for that. I have lived in different countries and despite all the gripes, I can say that France is great ! I will add that nobody is forced to come here.
funny thing about strikes (in the transportation domain) : I saw in the news that there are some in Germany and the UK right now. I guess they learned from the best :)
I’d say in July you also have the “festival d’Avignon” a must do for theatre and live performance lovers. And for the Tour de France you can actually go on the roads themselves to watch, it’s free

OMG the air conditioning....we have a portable one for the living room and I think my French partner secretly likes that we have it and he can blame it on me. 😝
I told my French partner I was tired of having a south facing apartment in this heatwave this year (south facing, great for winter, disgusting for summer, lol), and I demanded we get a portable AC for next summer, lol, he took one look at the window attachment (that plastic zipup thing that covers the area that's open for the hot air to escape) and he was like, "ugh that looks flimsy", but I was dying, I had all the rolling volets mostly down, I had 3 fans on, I filled the tub with cold water and periodically took a plunge in it like a pool to cool down, lol
@@aeolia80 🤣🤣🤣I can feel your pain! That sounds awful. He's right, the cloth window kit thing is ridiculous, but it's definitely better than nothing. It works well enough to just take the edge off in at least one room, which is enough to survive. And it's not like you need to run it every day.
Your comment about the south-facing apartment is super interesting actually, because my partner and I had that exact conversation. We just bought an apartment that has north and west exposures and at first (with my New England mindset) I was bummed it wasn't south-facing. He was like "Are you crazy?? With your heat intolerance??" And yeah, he was totally right. He's convinced that with global warming, north-facing exposures will start to become the most sought rather than south-facing.
@@Rachel-rs7jn Southern exposures aren't the worst. The sun is high in the sky so the rays do not enter the room. The worst is the western exposure: it is in the evening, when the sun goes down on the horizon that its rays hit the rooms directly and overheat them for the night.
I find it hard to understand the problem Americans have with air conditioning (which consumes a lot of energy and therefore contributes to global warming). We are used in France when it is very hot to close the windows and the shutters during the day. Our old stone houses and buildings offer a certain thermal inertia, so by isolating ourselves from the outside air, we keep a very pleasant temperature differential. When you do things outside and it's over 40°C, you really appreciate coming inside with a temperature of 27°C (the maximum I've had at my house this summer).
@@mfcq4987 We will have to agree to disagree. The previous commenter was complaining about their southern exposure, so clearly the sun does enter the room for some people. I don't mind our west-facing exposure in our apartment in France because we put the awning down in the evening which is when I don't mind having less light anyway. Having a dim room during the daytime because the shades are down is depressing for me. Regarding the homes in the U.S., you said it yourself - the houses in France are stone or concrete. Most of ours are not. We have a 100-year-old house in the U.S. made of wood and the walls definitely don't keep out the heat or the humidity (it is MUCH more humid where I live in the U.S. than where I live in France). I'm glad your situation works for you. But, not everyone is in the same boat.
@@Rachel-rs7jn But with the problem of global warming, you must, in the USA, also try to solve your problem of thermal insulation against heat and humidity in your homes. In France, it is becoming a political priority and the government is going to put a lot of money into it because individuals will not be able to take charge of this issue on their own.
I saw in recent videos of people who build their houses ("tiny-houses") in Canada that there are kinds of foams which are not polluting and which ensure a good thermal seal, it is enough to apply them between the outer wall and an inner wall of plywood or the like.
I hope that your government (or that of your states) takes this issue into account because otherwise the situation will become more and more difficult.
Yes, about mosquitoes, I guess bugs in general we are use to them be part of our life. And sometimes it absolutely sucks! This year however we have installed a kind of "net" for the French window in the living room. And we don't have any flies, wasps, hornets(oh, god I hate them). I think we'll keep it forever! There's no going back 😂

It is such a fun party!! Not only is like a lot of people's hidden fantasy to party with a fireman/firewoman, it also feels a bit "forbidden" because like who considers this a place you would normally party?!

Merci Kate. I love Paris in the springtime, the autumn, the winter. I have spent many months in Paris and France. I do have one goal in my Francophilic life: avoid Paris in August, avoid the French vacation zones in the summer; only the Alps could possibly attract me in the summer.
But basically Alaska or the mountains for the summer. Hot weather is way overrated.
But give me October and France is one of the best places on earth.
I agree. Many touristic destinations in summer are heaven and hell on earth combined. Overpriced, nowhere to park, noisy, and heat does not help with pollution. It turns places into a bland theme park in an endless symphony of touristic buses.
Such a good point! I always tell people if they aren't looking for hot hot weather, come to france at the beginning of October. Best prices on flights, less tourists and really mild nice weather to enjoy places!

Hey, is it true France is energetically independent unlike the UK, Italy, Germany and Japan who are suffering the crunch? Have you noticed and increase in energy bills over the last 6 months?
What about; the baguette porch Pirates, the men public urinating, the military driving their tracked vehicles destroying the roads at top speed, the military horses leaving their droppings, the sardine like Metro after Bastille parade(or walking home when the strike starts right after the parade!), and having one toll booth open throughout your journey on the toll roads(regardless of fast pay.) Oh yes, bring screen netting for windows(with duct tape) for non-air-conditioning residences.
7:53 Actually, this shocked the french locals in the 60s, and the vast majority of women doing this in France are German or from the Netherland. Now tolerance prevail but also it's no longer a trend as it was before. It's no longer used for political reasons. People now have a different opinion about the effect of the sun on their skin.

My culture shock in France: there were no mosquitoes, you could leave your windows open without screen. I started doing that in the PNW too after coming back.

Was in Paris at end of June. Nothing like getting a message from Air France to come really early since the crews at CDG decide to have a strike. Hope when we are back at Christmas time they dont strike. But what better way to have a real French experience. LOL

As a french who learn English in school, for me the method we learn this language is "littéraire" (I don't know how to say it in English), so we don't learn "un anglais pratique", qui serait plus adéquat pour une conversation.
c'était effectivement le cas pour celles et ceux qui ont au-delà de 26-28 ans, depuis les programmes ont bcp changé et aujourd'hui l'anglais appris au collège et au lycée est bcp plus tourné vers des situations pratiques, authentiques etc.
C'est vrai que l'enseignement de l'anglais est pas idéal.
J'ai appris toute la garniture en regardant UA-cam. L'école ne donnant que la forme et certains mots de vocabulaire...
Il faudrait faire une grande progression, du genre base ---> moins base ---> thèmes courants dans les nouvelles (économie, social, politique ect...) ---> thèmes dédiés (domaines parfois utiles comme la technologie, la construction...) ---> vocabulaire dans les métiers (ça c'est plutôt pour les études supérieures, afin de pouvoir parler en anglais de son métier)

I had a Greek ex who was also very reserved with AC use. He didn't have one in his bedroom just a fan. It was difficult to sleep at first . We Asians love the AC too being in tropical weather all the time 😆

I am curious, of those who live or have travelled in France, did you encounter mosquitoes? We live in Bourgogne and can count the number of mosquitoes each summer heard or seen on one hand. (And that's two different locations in Bourgogne.) It's too dry come summer for them to breed - unless we stupidly leave some stagnant water out for them to do so. And yes we did this once and paid the price. Having a lack of mosquitoes is definitely one of the reasons we love living (where we do) in France.
Mind you we have pet ducks, so if people tell me mosquitoes is an issue in France, then I will have to attribute our lack of to our ducks eating them.
It really depends on the area! You have a lot or barely any (for example Camargue is well-known for mosquitos)
I live near Avignon and usually mosquitoes are everywhere during the Summer, especially Asian tiger mosquitoes (= "moustiques tigres") but this year, the temperatures have been so high (above 30° since mid May and above 35-36° since mid-june) that there are hardly any mosquitoes compared to the years before!
I was in Paris for a month, until yesterday, doing the tourist bit.
I encountered exactly one mosquito, in the Sewer Museum.

Pour les grèves, normal de les faire en plein été : les saucisses grillées sur le parking c'est quand même plus sympa quand il fait beau !! 😂 Et pour le tour de France c'est un peu le passage obligé pour tous les petits français d'aller les voir au moins une fois dans leur vie. Par contre, à la télé, beaucoup regarde car c'est un bon moyen de faire la sieste !!
The only place in France where I saw mosquito nets on all the houses was when I went to see my nephew in Cayenne in French Guyana... but there I was in South America😂😂😂😂

I officially bought a netting for my daughter's bed this summer. I can manage, but seeing her little legs all eaten up was enough to try to improve it for her!

This is due to the COVID 19 pandemic. Air traffic had decreased significantly during this period and many airport ground staff (who usually have short contracts) had to look for other work. With the economic recovery, they found better paying jobs with long contracts, so when air traffic resumed, the airports failed to recruit as many trained people as before. They just have to pay them better and offer them better conditions!

As a Frenchie who loves topless on the beach, I felt much more confortable to do so during my holiday in Spain (Mallorca) then where I live in France where I barely see anyone doing it except older women who have done so their whole life, funny how perspectives can be!

OMG out of fashion the fireman's ball! It's such a rager in Paris and I still get nostalgic about not going anymore! For the topless women, a couple of people have said the same thing. I agree that it's not like everywhere, but even seeing older women topless on a beach just does not happen in the US. Like ever. So even three people can be shocking for people not used to it at all, you know?

Yeah I get it for the topless topic, is it the same regarding women who do not wear bras? I feel like it is more and more common, and I was positively surprised to see a lot of young woman without bras in Paris on my last trip, more than in the "countryside" I think. For the older generation in France it is quite shocking, so I am interesting in the American point of view as well!
I live in Spain and I feel like there are quire many young women doing so, even when they are with friends! I could never do that^^

I had a lifelong dream to live in France, and after retirement, I spent one year in different French cities. After that one year, I realized that it will be VERY difficult.
I have a love-hate relationship with France, but it is the bureaucracy, the very bad work ethics(probably the worst in western Europe), in Italy and Greece it is as bad, but they know it, and they apologize for it whereas in France they tell you to go to hell, the omnipresent social animosity and tension, and the lack of police presence unless it is terrorism that made it very hard.
The French culture is not very welcoming by nature, and unless you speak and act just like them, you are labeled étranger.
I still go to France, but I can only take 2 weeks at a time.

Many French people for whom living in the USA is difficult or even impossible. I have a French friend who lived in Louisiana for 2 years as a teacher. In her first year, she taught at a fairly reputable middle school where the majority of students were from the wealthy white community, and she quickly made friends with her colleagues and their families. The second year she taught in a public college where the majority of students and teachers were black, she had a hard time being accepted, but the worst part was that the friends she had made previous year we stopped going to her overnight. It was very hard for her and she decided to return to France.

Ce n'est pas si rare que ça, du moins dans le sud-est. Je vais souvent à la Ciotat ou à Saint-cyr-sur-mer car j'habite à côté et il y a pas mal de topless. Donc effectivement, ça peut surprendre les américains ! A côté, le nipplegate c'est de la gnognotte 🤣

Worst time to go to France… always go November to February… cold rainy and fabulous and no tourists!!! And in Australia we get 4 weeks paid vacation per year … and striking is part of their culture… also nudity is only shocking to Americans !!!!

It's not shocking anymore, but my first time in France in 2007, you could still smoke in bars! So it was a bit weird, even now, when I arrive to a place where you can still smoke indoors. And some of my friends even say "it feels cozier" ... o.O ew.

I just returned to California after a 6-month trip around the world, the last 7 weeks of which were in France, so I know what you're talking about! My French cousin & I were going from Lille to Quimper and the Lille-Paris train was of course canceled due to strikes, so we pushed onto the next train and sat on the luggage rack so we wouldn't miss our Paris-Quimper train! He had to explain why they struck on a busy June travel day: because it would cause the most problems.🤨Every time I took a train or a flight, I held my breath. And the air conditioning! The French act like you're a terrible person for wanting a/c. My friends in Nice had a small one in their living room & fans in the bedrooms, thank goodness, but my cousins have nothing like that and the heat was awful. Every time I'm there and it's 95F (which has been often) and they say they don't need a/c or fans, I call "b.s."! 🥵
je garde le souvenir de ce texan me disant ; pourquoi ce fatiguer pour apprendre une langue étrangère , alors que l'anglais est parlé dans le monde entier ? erreur fatale sauf des exceptions dans les capitales et zones touristiques des commerçants et guides et employer d'hôtel vous répondrons en anglais et encore , mais quelques soit la parti du monde sauf les pays du Commonwealth , l'anglais n'est pas compris , ce n'est pas une raison que les Etats unis sont une grande puissance que nous somme obliger de parler anglais , la supériorité des USA n'a que cents ans . la France a été une grande puissance pendant 1300 ans avec l'Angleterre elle dominait le monde , sans la France les USA n'existaient pas . quand aux grèves ce sont des syndicats d'extrêmes gauches majoritaires dans les entreprises nationales qui font grèves les jours des départs en vacances dons les conducteurs de TGV alors qu'ils travaillent a peine 28 heures par semaine et partent à la retraite à 50 ans . quand aux compagnies aériennes Ryanair c'est une compagnie irlandaise et EasyJet est anglaise avec des contrats anglo-saxons , Air France n'est pas en grève , c'est une filiale à bas coup Transavia . Oui en été , le nudisme est pratiquer dans certain endroits , et pour nous il est normal de voire les femmes sans soutient gorges sur les plages , il n'y a absolument rien de choquant si cela gène personnes , ils vont voire ailleurs Point . @@gerarddaclin542 Oui il est difficile de rencontrer un japonais qui parle anglais a moins d'avoir un interprète (perso il est français) tout comme en Corée au Vietnam , , Cambodge, Laos beaucoup parlent le français bon dans les grande villes autrement personnes . en Afrique c'est simple a l'est c'est l'anglais dans les grande villes ; idem en Afrique de l'ouest et équatoriale c'est le français ,autrement c'est le dialecte local . les langues véritablement parler sont le Mandarin , l'indi, l'espagnol , l'anglais et le français

I generally like your videos, but this one seemed very aggressive. And I do not agree with so many places being closed or on strike. Those are clichés from bygone days. And yes, there have been a number of strikes this year, but they have nothing to do with summer. They are because of getting out of covid, insufficient employees and the need to increase salaries immediately. It's not just in France that this is happening.
You must be French and don't realize how chaotic France is. You get used to poor work ethics, strikes, being told NO every time you try to get business done, the lack of police presence, and the very palpable social tension everywhere.
It is so sad to see this decline.

I hate the tendency of the French to always look for "the providential man" who will take care of the problems that they themselves do not take care of (Napoleon, Charles de Gaulle, Macron...). Our political system (semi-presidential/semi-parliamentary) with an all powerful and irresponsible President is good for children. I am very envious of the parliamentary systems of our European neighbours, which are adult political systems!

Topless sunbathing is common in Australia too. In France we don't consider wrong showing off a fit tanned silhouette, as long as it's passive sun bathing and not exhibition. Of course it's not suitable in crowded places and city beaches.
One need to understand, in France we may find disrespectful displaying an overweight body, even covered, or parading not well dressed.
For example, I used to be amused how Americans or English wearing skirt women displaying their legs and arms even if they were not fit. The french way to dress is more like showing off what you are proud of. Just like on an interview, resumee or portfolio or advert : show only what is right or it does disservice. In a nutshell, "Show off or cover it" philosophy :)

@@christianc9894 Malheureusement pour moi j'ai pas pu interagir avec des touristes américains même en étant à Paris (ce qui ne veut pas dire que je ne les ai pas vus bien sur). Mais je suis convaincu qu'il est très risqué (ou simplement faux) de généraliser. Et quand elle dit ce qu'elle dit, elle parle effectivement aux américains qui pourraient croire qu'en France on parle anglais, mais ça ne veut pas dire que tous (ou la majorité) des américains le croient, même s'il y en a beaucoup.
