When my PC gaming adventure started a 5 year old graphics card would have been completely unusable.
Undervolting is more than recommended, you can bring the temps down a lot and it gives headroom for overclocking.
I have a 290X with Nimez drivers on my 2nd PC and I'm as well surprised how well it holds.

Nice a of us making a Hardware Retro Review i like it.
I bought this card in reference design at launch day 2013 and absolutely loved it.
As I Remember Ive played everything maxed at 1080p til around 2016. And also remeber noticing the heat for real😂 But the constant hitting of 95°C always bothered me so I decided once to install an Arctic 3fan aftermarket cooler. The construction was ugly af xD but noise and gpu temp got much better. Vram got a little on the hotter side so i put extra fin blocks with thermally conductive but also resistant adhesive on. Months after in the same year I somehow wanted to roll it back to OG. Cant remember why. But by trying to take the glued finblocks off the vram, I accidentaly rip off 2 vram ICs aswell as some traces from the pcb. That was the end of my beloved r9 290 😢 but the beginning for a new gtx 1060 6g, first nvidia since gtx 460 for me.
But still have the broken card standing in my shelf for the good memories. It costed 320€ at launch day in Austria, if I remember correctly and it's performance has beaten nvidias... gtx 780 i guess? For around 800€? That blew me away back then.
Time flies.
Ah yeah I wanted one of those artic coolers but unfortunately it's not easy to find an aftermarket cooler for it now lol, and this card compared the the 780 honestly aged way better and costing less.

The real strength of the Nimez drivers, is that they often allow you to use a later driver version than AMD allows for your older video card. This can open up a lot of games to you, that you wouldn't be able to run with the official drivers, because they are too old.
I have a Sapphire R9 290 Tri X Cooler and it has been working for me for more than 7 years now. I need to get a new one in 2024, Just don't have the money now so I am still using this card. I even use it to play all my retro games and they play perfectly up to the PS3 emulator.
Still does really well
If you want a new modern card that basically does everything RX 6600 for $200 new if you can go that high. Tho the 290 is still kicking, won't go down without a fight.
These were crazy long lasting GPU's. The only issues I every had was that every 1-2 years the thermal paste cooked itself and needed to be replace. Great to see moded divers avaliable, rather than "legacy drivers".
I'm confident my RTX3070 won't last as long.
Nah, I think that will last for a while, the 1070 was still fine till the 3000 series, my 3060 on the hand basically if the 1080ti becomes shit, then so is mine.

Nice vídeo, i have a r9 290x saved because i dont use it, i use a gtx 1060 3gb instead, but i think what this AMD card still can do a good job because only 3gb VRAM of 1060 cause many texture problema in some games

very nice. solid old cards they are. maybe try them in chimera os and compare the open source linux drivers to nimez?
They are absolutely solid, the higher end GCN cards, planning to test out the 280x, 290x and the Fury down the line since they're in my inventory lol.
By default they tend to be very power hungry but undervolting them mitigates a tiny bit, as well as making them a bit more stable. I also should try out Chimera OS eventually
@@AnnHiroCh in your videos with the fury please try Linux as well. I've heard it does better in Linux than with nimez with the still supported open source drivers. Staying tuned.
i just have achieved yesterday a ASUS Direct CU II OC R9 290, it´s weird, all components on my pc were put to better use with respect to my previous GPU, a NVidia GTX 970 , but, fortnite was run much worst a comparison with the last mentioned, i don't understand why fortnite crash when trying to start on DX12 Mode and COD Warzone 2.0 opens without any problem
All I can say is, Fortnite is weird

Well AM4 is pretty easy to get into now. Or any of the last 3 Intel gens with an i3 is also a good option
