I had two of this exact card. Gave one away, still have the other. At one time I ran them in Crossfire with an FX-8350, in a PC a actually named "Spaceheater." I haven't used my remaining R9-290 in years other than to check it's still working. In a pinch, it's a spare. Or it's an overkill GPU for an office/browsing PC that otherwise has none.
Crossfire con dos r9 290? Pero que fuente de poder tienes?
People acting like they never seen a 275w gpu before lol. It was normal and today that's normal lol. Its not a 2023 gpu its a 2013 gpu. The rx 6900xt pulls over that at stock power, i can pull over 400w from my 6900xt lol.
I agree. I think it was more down to the fact that most people had a blower-style card. Which isn't ideal for this sort of GPU package😂
Still running this in my rig. I7 4790k with a R9 290 Sapphire triX
I also had i7 4790 with R9 290 but since then i had 2070S R5 3600 and now 7800XT R7 5800x3d
Same lol. i7 4790K here with a Sapphire Tri X R9 290X.
I only play League of Legends and Fortnite, and it's impossible for me to justify upgrading from this setup even to this day.
@@twokindsoflove 4790k 2x 290 trix OC here. I'm running 4790k at 5.0 ghz with 32 gb 2400 mhz ddr3. 10 year old build still destroying whatever i throw at it.
Crazy that we live in an era radeon 780M igpu plays more or less like this
Expecting next yr igpu can do Rx580😂
I’m still on the r9 270 lol this decade old gpu has double the vram as mine 😂
Well, still?
@@takehirolol5962 sadly, yes
I have one but its been in my closet for like 8 years lol
Great video, very interesting and informative. I have been PC gaming since early august and love watching PC build, repairs, and seeing if old tech can be as good as old tech. I thought you might have given Destiny 2 a run in that GPU. I have hit the subscribe button as we yam yams need to stick together. 👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I’m glad you liked the video mate! I’m always testing older hardware here on the channel🙌
Thank you for the sub too!
@@ProYamYamPC if you like old hardware I still have a Commodore C16, C64, Amiga 500+, 1200. 😂🤣😂 I need to get a life. 🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
I was gaming on a R9 280X until the End of 2020. It broke. Market was pure hell. Got the cheapest GPU available at this time. 540 Euro RX 6600 lel. What a Time. I was also impressed with the 280X but the 3GB Vram were a Problem. 4 is so much better.
Also used the DirectCU II Coolerdesign on the 280X. A Coolershroud out of Metal. What a Time. The 280X Model just did not have an Backplate, but a black PCP and two green LEDs where the Power Plugs get in. Kind of a nice Design when inside the Case. A LOT of PCP Warp over the Years. I guess VRAM or Mosfets died because of the Bending. Could not bring her back to life a 3rd time in the Oven.
Ooof. I was in a similar position. My 290(with a bios that modded it to 290X) - broke in march of 2021. I decided to quit gaming. Then a week after I saw 3070 on hotukdeals for msrp and luckily it didn't sell out before I put my credit card details :D It was a great budget friendly card if you didn't mind the power consumption and noise :D
I have the MSI R9 290 unopened. Been thinking about selling it.
This video is on par with UA-camrs with 100k+ subscribers. Good job 👍
Thank you! I always try to produce the highest quality content🙌
Basically a RX 470 space heater, at 275 watts? Wow
It's fallen way behind in some games, if the driver support and/or optimization is behind the newer Polaris architecture. Also, obviously the 8GB version of the 470 can be a lot better in games where 4GB of vram is an issue. Of course, this card is so old that I wouldn't really complain about the vram capacity. It was more than enough for a very long time, and there were actually some models of the 290 which had 8GB (though they were fairly rare). I think the 8GB versions of the R9 290 were the first consumer graphics cards to ever come with 8GB.
@@syncmonism This is one of the reasons I did not have a PC at the time with a Plasma TV and a Home Theater...more than 1000 watts...
@@syncmonism Yep. I have the MSI reference design with 8gb still unopened in the box. I think sapphire was the only AIB to release a non reference 8gb
Nice work bro
Thanks bro🫡
I built a new PC at the very end of last year, but due to budget ended up recycling the R9 290x Twin Frozr into my new rig while waiting for funds for a new video card. Bought the A770 last night to replace it. During the 4 months of R9 it did rather well, it doesn't like that I upgraded to a 4k monitor and gets a wee bit hot, however for its age I should have honestly checked the paste before putting it in there. (I hit 94 running minecraft and got scared) I've been running it on Linux (Kernel 6.8) specifically. Once I swap later today I'm going to take it apart, re-paste it and see if I can give it to a good cause!
I have this in my Win 7 machine, and when my graphics card in my Win 10 ryzen machine died I used it as a stop-gap, it worked a treat! 90% of my games ran, some a little slower but still ran!
How you got small temperatures
Can it run Helldivers 2?
Donde las coseguistes por 25?
My first gpu was an R9 390x
That's a decent first GPU mate!
I paid 80$ nzd for my windforce r9 290 worth it for what I play lol mainly c&c but paired with a i5 6500 (the cpu this q.c should have used with this card) I get solid 60fps most games, I had to set my fps cap at 150 cause of insurgency sandstorm lol
The last time AMD compited properly, this thing was better than the 780 and the 290 x was better than the 780 ti, in fact it was called the titan killer.... i think this is the reason why Nvidia didnt sleep by Pascal era, reason why pascal was that good especially the 1080 ti... little we knew that was gonna be the last time we had real competition in the high end for a long time.
275w is crazy
We'll, compared to new tech, yes. But it was fine back then, it was higher power usage vs the competition but its nothing really, and like now no one really cared how much power it used. The stock blower noise was the issue.
It's not the worst but it's certainly up there lol. I think the biggest issue was AMD thought it was a good idea to make the reference card a blower-style cooler😂
Test it on TLOU and Hogwarts just for shits and giggles.
I haven't got them. However, I am planning on adding some games to my benchmarking list soon. Stay tuned🫡
