Etruscan era
The ancient city (urbs vetus in Latin, whence "Orvieto"), populated since Etruscan times, has usually been associated with Etruscan Velzna, but some modern scholars differ. Orvieto was certainly a major centre of Etruscan civilization.
Roman and post-Roman eras
Orvieto was annexed by Rome in the 3rdcentury BC. After the collapse of the Roman Empire its defensible site gained new importance: the episcopal seat was transferred from Bolsena, and the city was held by Goths and by Lombards before its self-governing commune was established in the 10th century, in which consuls governed under a feudal oath of fealty to the bishop. Orvieto's relationship to the papacy has been a close one; By the 13th century, three papal palaces had been built.
Middle Ages
Orvieto, sitting on its impregnable rock controlling the road between Florence and Rome where it crossed the Chiana, was a large town: its population numbered about 30,000 at the end of the 13th century. In the 13th century bitter feuds divided the city, which was at the apogée of its wealth but found itself often at odds with the papacy, even under interdict.
The city became one of the major cultural centers of its time when Thomas Aquinas taught at the studium there.
Papal rule
The territory of Orvieto was under papal control long before it was officially added to the Papal States; it remained a papal possession until 1860, when it was annexed to unified Italy.

Orvieto seems like a fascinating place to visit and full of history too. Stunning buildings and very attractive shops, stores and restaurants. The Duomo's architecture is quite amazing and very unique. Wow, that building is indeed visually stunning. I really enjoyed this tour and hope to know more of its history.
It really is Lang, thank you as always. This is a "shorter tour", while a much longer tour inside the Duomo and in other areas of the city will follow, maybe in Autumn,. I'll also of course add more historical information as well. Glad you liked it , and , as always, thank you my dear friend
Hermoso lugar, gracias por estos videos🤌🏻🤌🏻
Gracias Blues!
I was in Orvieto a week and a half ago, it's a wonderful town!
I filmed in the same period Issey! I'll make a more extensive tour maybe in September
Orvieto is so beautiful!
Agreed!
Can't wait to see your next tour!
:) thanks
Refreshing to see that the enormous heritage of Italy is so well cared and appreciated by its inhabitants!
Dear Andrei, so nice to see you again. Love Orvieto, and a longer tour will follow... it was a nice day... life is returning to normality luckily. I'll show also some unusual towns nearby very soon. Wish you a nice weekend my friend
@@StillWanderer Thank you for the kind words and I can't wait to see those towns through your images and descriptions! I love Umbria and Molise for their unspoiled countryside and tranquil hilltop towns.
@@andreistirbu2733 love Molise too Andrei...so harsh and untouched by tourism...I'll maybe go there in September
What a clean and beautiful city! ❤️❤️I love the video and thank you for taking me on along on this visit. I enjoy all the videos. Excellent job!!
Thank you Lourdes! I'll film another one in Orvieto also showing the churches and many backstreets too!
wonderful city visited. thanks for this video. a trip through your eyes :)
Thanks!
Awesome! I've watched 15 seconds and I know I'll love it. Can't wait to see your longer one. We will be in Civita di Bagnoregio and I see this is only a half hour drive away. Keep up the terrific work.
Dear Ken, I was wondering how you were! Indeed, this is a "preview" of a longer tour with churches and different alleys. I tested this time to shoot a walking tour but.... by bike, with a "steady-cam" effect. It's indeed close to Civita. All that area is stunning..
Thanks, I have been always watching. Earlier it gave me an impression that I am walking along the streets myself, sometimes looking on the sides into the yards, interesting corners, narrow streets, climbing down and up narrow stairs. Now I suppose it is been used a vehicle which runs only straight and quite quickly. I have lost the pleasure of walking I had had before. Anyway it is nice.
Ciao Audrone, thank you so much for your words! Yes.. this time in Orvieto was a little "experiment"... as I placed the camera on the bycicle and that's why the impression was like that. I tried to make a kind of "steady cam" effect.
But 90% of the time I just walk. Usually in Rome I use the bike for the distance, but not much.
I should go back to Orvieto a film it more extensively in the future... maybe in December!
Hello! Thank you for the beautiful and relaxing tour. Enjoyed the city walk 😊 Have a great weekend 😄👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Thank you! You too!
Beautiful tour, beautiful city 😊
And beautiful video, as usual 👌
Thank you very much Ioana! This is the "small tour" of Orvieto, but will upload a longer one in the future. Glad you enjoyed it and glad yo see you again) Wish you a nice weekend!
Beautiful place in the fine weather ! I enjoyed the virtual tour ! I'd like to travel there sometime😊💕
Thank you!
amazing tour, its so beautiful there!
It really is!
A lovely town, Riccardo thanks for the tour 👍❤️🇮🇹
Glad you enjoyed also this new tour Angela..I will definitely walk there soon...in the cathedral especially.. this was a kind of "experiment" as you can see... the camera is super stable.. I tried to make a "steady-cam" footage by using the bike... will see if I'll do it the same..in Rome perhaps... !
Orvieto is my favorite place in all of Italy. For such a tiny hilltop town there’s so much to see, it’s just a short train ride to Rome and Tuscan towns just over the border in Tuscany plus the food is to die for. It’s my idea of heaven in Italy.
Ciao Monica, agreed with you on this as I love Orvieto very much myself. It's a shame I couldn't film properly there ...but I'm planning a long walking tour soon.
Great atmosphere!!
Thank you dear Sam
Stunning location! Well filmed, big like from me 👌
Great vibe to this adventure :)
New sub.
Thanks for the sub!
👌👌👌👌, Orvieto is amazing , very interesting , magnificent buildings and well kept city. People are enjoying summer days . 34 degree's must be hot . Greetings for a great weekend .
So nice Rajyashree, agreed! this is a "smal tour", but I will upload a more extensive tour inside the Duomo and in churches too.. it will be very long though. Glad you enjoyed this small one.
I wish you a nice weekend my dear friend
Bellissima città abitò da quasi 20 ani bello😮❤❤
Bellissima davvero Orvieto Elena, beata te che ci abiti
Querida Jussara, Obrigado!!
😍🌷 very nice 4K walked tour! Beautiful places! Great sharing my friend! 👍
Thank you very much!
Your channel is very creative, excellent, awesome, energetic, colorful and interesting! thanks for sharing! good luck!

What a pristine gem of a town! It’s got a stunning church! Never been but love it so much, I watch a livecam facing the church! Lovely restaurants as well👌
Agreed ! This was a short tour...a more extensive one will follow!
Bravo! Molto piacevole.
Grazie Flip, felice sia piaciuto

We visited in november 2019.Beautiful city!!
Agreed Claudio, stunning. I'll make a more extensive walking tour in Orvieto soon... with churches etc!
Great Job.....
Thank You Kat!
Forse a novembre riesco
I have been to Viterbo, but never to Orvieto. your walk and good video inspiring me to visit it Thank you
Margarita thank you. Truly s stunning town. This is a short tour but I'll make a much longer one inside the Duomo and other churches soon. Glad you enjoyed it though and to see you again) wish you a pleasant weekend
Meraviglioso
Grazie Loretta!
We were supposed to visit Orvieto, but..... covid arrived 🥺so hopefully we'll get there eventually. So thank you for sharing your walk. Looking forward to the longer version. Stay cool, Riccardo. I hear it's very hot there in the northern hemisphere at the moment. 🤗
A pleasure as always Dear Geraldine; it's indeed a stunning place .. in the long walk I'll visit inside the Duomo and more.. I highly recommend to visit once nearby, it's truly worth it. Indeed... heatwave here.. quite unbearable.. these days I won't move for sure. Wish you a nice weekend and take care too!
@@StillWanderer will you show the pozzo too?
@@geraldinehadiwidjaja7421 I would like to Geraldine!

Orvieto, a prestigious site with an unique Duomo and being part of the so called volcanic tuff fascinating cities like Sovana, Sorano, Pitigliano and the lost city of Vitozza. Very nice vid, Riccardo, please longer introduction.
Thank you so much Romanes, it's a short version, but I'll upload a second very extensive video of Orvieto with all the churches and more soon. Indeed... Pitigliano and Sovana should be next!
@@StillWanderer very fine, you made vid not only at the peak of the sun in the day like other famous channel on UA-cam but at the end of the day or the beginning when the beauty of light is bigger like via Appia Antica
@@romanes2794 love the different lighting indeed Romanes.. I'll upload a new video of a town in Puglia maybe Tuesday...at dusk. It was so stunning at that time...

Are you planning to visit Pitigliano?
Looking forward to seeing it with you. Enjoy your weekend! 🌄

🇮🇹ORVIETO THE LAST ETRUSCAN CITY.
Orvieto was the last of the Etruscan cities to fall, in 264 BC. by the Consul Quinto Fabio Massimo (who died in battle) and by the Consul Marco Furio Flacco, under the hegemony of Rome.
The fall of Orvieto marked the end of the Etruscan federal state and sanctioned the power of Rome, shortly thereafter, it would become the capital of the Mediterranean and of the whole known world.
Thank you Alessio for the additional history of Orvieto. Didn't know it was the last Etruscan city to fall to the Romans
Another great vlog to make us all very jealous Riccardo. Working on vlog number three now wishing I was there instead of here my friend. Seriously wanting some gelato now. Thanks so much for sharing your well done vlogs of all the Italian towns you bring us👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾
Dear Lawsonartzy, thank you so much. A much longer video of Orvieto will be, but in autumn, as I love it more there compared to summertime. Always beautiful Orvieto though... Beautiful area as well!

I didn't have the subtitle options, so right now as I am watching its just the walk :)
Some of those alley ways look like just like they were just plucked from medievil times!
Jess hi! Yup, this is a "short" version of a much longer walk I'll upload in the next months, with all history and much more, also the Duomo and unknown churches.
🙏 Barbara
There is also an underground tour avaiable and the Saint Patrick's weel
Yup Paolo... this is a very "short" tour... a new extensive tour will follow in October!
@@StillWanderer I'm preatty confident about that 😀, i just wrote the 2 suggestions ( one of which i don't know how much could be "walkable" , the underground ) as wishes. Thank a lot for your videos and reply.
@@gvisir Grazie Paolo! I'll maybe modify the thumbnail and add "short tour" or something too!

Too bad you did not provide historical information. You said a more extensive one will follow. This is still very beautiful presentation for this hillside town in central Italy. The Duomo is magnificent. It resemble the Cathedral of Florence with its Gothic architecture. Also nice to see people around. We appreciate all these great videos, Riccardo. Italy is such a vast country, picturesque with scenic places.
Ciao Ester! Nice to see you again. Indeed, this is a kind of "preview" of a next walking tour, an extensive one, in Orvieto, also inside the Duomo and the other little churches. Maybe soon... The Duomo is astonishing...
I'll show more also around that area, some unknown or "forgotten" towns nearby... Wish you a nice weekend and thank you as always!
@@StillWanderer Riccardo, I thought I should just mention this. You don't have to go there in your next videos on Orvieto. I don't think it's crucial. I was only curious and watched another walking tour on Orvieto by a very reputable tour you know, I'm sure. His tour was exactly like yours but he added the two famous "wells", one ancient and a more modern one called "St Patrick's well. I'm looking forward to seeing your extensive tour of Orvieto. Have a blessed day.
Hi Esther, don't worry, I understand this! I was thinking of going during fall, not in summer and of course show the pit of st. Patrick and the main churches. Usually I visit the main churches but this is the only video where it's a "preview" of the longer video. I hope I'm September I'll finalize it , also showing minor churches. I hope you'll enjoy it. This tour was a kind of experiment with the bike )
@@StillWanderer Thanks for your feedback. I always enjoy all your videos. I just realized I have a lot of catching up to do with your videos. You published a lot last month that I just discovered in your channel and I will try to watch all of them. I watched Cisterino (Puglia) and Vieste (Puglia). Both were fantastic but I was in a hurry and did not leave comments.
@@estherkisob9919 thank you dear Esther! It's almost 2 years by now with this hobby) I started with unusual towns and cities, and with time I've also expanded to more familiar oned, but the passion is still always there. I'll try to post around 2 videos a week by now. Lots to discover though still!
This was a little walking, a little riding wasn't it? That's not a bad idea.
90% walking Sharon, as I thought it would be a new "test" of a steady-cam experiment.Walking but camera attached to a steady support on the bike!
@@StillWanderer Oh the challenges that you must conquer. That's part of the fun, I suppose.
They are Sharon, now I see them as that
see allot of refs, again, bhutto is not some obscure housewife suburban la, she is very high profile, of course there is the uk canada , australia new zeland thing, then there is the mary mother of jesus narrative, not only one billion catholics, but also protestants esp driven by german protestant relevance, rel german activities and sax coburg stuff, then south asia,
pakistan and india (now less sectarian , more unity among muslims and hindus), therefore she will be seen as indian by all indians, due to historical links, thats around two billion or so, then central asia, which is sunni muslim, so add another hundred million or so, and there is sunni muslim southeast asia , malaysia , indonesia, another two hundred miilon,
latin america of course incl catholics, sunni muslim arab world, add another three hundred million ppl, and for reasons already said, she will be seen as "white" by american middle class , and not seen in context of stereotypes assoc with muslims, and then there is the romeo and juliet narrative descending into some tragic dark nightmare, and women around the world, will be enamored with this assoc, and will be upset with those who ruined this romantic and brave leap these kids took, fortyyears ago, this would be a strong driver in terms of pop opinion, but given now tech, it will be more driven and multipolar in terms of coverrage, china, has cultural budhist ties to india, that is marginal, but chinese public will find it disturbing as a whole, i dont apply a number to this, since it is not soid enuf to guess how this would roll, it of course will have to at least make some kind of consdieration in terms of its newly important ties to central asia and of courses pakistan has been a close ally in the post war years , historically a bloc against india, wtih pakistan and india being less tense, more friendly, has transformed into a commercial relationship, with the construction of harbor and increased econ ties, , so i see the only areas of non conflict being russia and sub saharan africa , china to an extent, given the visceral nature of refs, it will certainly be emotive n nature,
all you do is post old videos,
It's the first video in Orvieto )
My father was born there and grew up there during WW2 different place back then no tourist lol
indeed Jeff... I remember hearing similiar story from my granddad when he lived near Rome during ww2... so much different back then
@@StillWanderer yes seems more made for tourism now
@@jeffgoodbar7682 indeed, though the Orvieto Cathedral .... it's just stunning since the 13th century - I should actually go back and film inside the next time...it's not even too far. Orvieto is truly beautiful
