  • (I do not own the rights to this video. The rights either belong to Columbia Pictures or Faces Music, Inc.)
Written and Directed by John Cassavetes
Starring John Cassavetes, Peter Falk and Ben Gazzara
Another trailer inexplicably missing from UA-cam. And one for a film I often consider my favorite from my favorite director.
Obviously, Columbia might have had a bit of a problem advertising a film so exhausting on multiple levels from the non-ending cracks to the terror of the three stars facing their adulthood that they try to advertise it as goofball shtick. The film does have a lot of humor (and apparently an early cut was pure comedy), but that would only be barely scratching the surface of such an amazing film. Even Cassavetes own label of the film being a comedy seems to be done with a touch of irony (which is odd considering how irony free his films are). Still a fun trailer and a product of its time and interesting for historical purposes.

The thing about Cassavetes is he's a filmmaker you will not understand until you are a certain age. If you watch his films as a teenager you are gonna hate him. When you hit your early 20's you can see the genius of the work but not quite understand it. By the time your close to or are in your 30's you understand it completely and it infuriates you cause you can relate to the emotions, the awkwardness of the characters you are watching people as they are in real life.

Just wait until you retire...you may find most of it, if not humorous, amusing. The scene in Gazarra's house with his wife, m-in-law and then his buddies enter is totally nuts, raw and oh so human.

G I've seen Cassavettes in some films as an actor. The first film I watched that Cassavettes directed was The Killing of a Chinese Bookie, and I had just turned 40. Critics HATED it, but I loved it because to me it was more of a character study. I now put that film in my top 5.

People always say death and funerals just make you more afraid of your mortality,. For me, no, It makes me profoundly sad I'll never see my friend again, and will think of them for the rest of my days. Yes, the profundity of death is a real eye opener as you get older, but it is that consciousness of a person that you can't ever reach again. That makes me sad and I can't ever get my head around it.

I disagree, I first saw his films when I was a teenager and it changed my life and I have loved his films ever since. Sure, as I get older I'll have a different perspective and appreciate them for different reasons, but did not hate seeing them for the first time as a teenager.

@@frankjamesbonarrigo7162 Omg, I feel the same exact way. I lost my brother a year and a half ago and I still can't get my head around it. It's so heartbreaking and maddening at the same time, there's no understanding death.

Agree it's really good, have you seen the Buffalo 66 trailer that uses Heart of the Sunrise and only still frames from the film? Still ranks at the very top to me for trailers.

In a world of many easy things the cinema of John Cassavetes is not "easy". Nevertheless, at its best it gets closer to how human beings actually are, and interact with each other, then almost anything else on screen. It always remains fresh because it represents a direction that mainstream cinema and TV is still largely to take. The "reality" presented, even in a so called realistic movie, is highly constructed and artificial. Cassavetes goes beyond that into something both much odder and closer to everyday experience, as might be caught by a CCTV camera. I find it endlessly interesting to return to.

The preview audience loved his OPENING NIGHT, so he re-edited it to make it more challenging!

This looks good! I love to watch really old films I never heard of like this. I found it by accident. I watch in the background, the stores, the cars, and I see a record of what the world looked like before I was even born. Nice upload!

I just watched the movie so I could stare at Peter Falk. The movie was a bit obnoxious for my liking. The little moment where Peter Falk takes his shirt off was a teaser (the scene before this dragged out forever and bored me to tears) alright and unexpected since I am used to his more modest Columbo character. Gosh the guy was gorgeous (we all know he was talented). I wonder if he knew?

An veritable actors's movie. So, if you are an actor -- you get it. Otherwise -- not so much. This film was considered "with it" in 1970. By 1975, it was old news. It just does not hold, let alone pass the test of time.
