I truly appreciate you showcasing gardening books because it seems that most people flock to online for gardening references. Nothing beats a really good book and I now have some awesome selections added to my list. Thanks!
Thats a great video there. Light & cheerful. 😀 I loved it & I also see that like myself, you literally have plants everywhere! Although that storm Barra made a fair mess outside, my indoor plants are all safe & sound! 😌
Great recommendations, luckily found the last book Christopher Lloyd book on Amazon at a great price. I'm overhauling my borders this year so hoping it will help me with flower choices.
Niall sorry I never commented, just realized. Great recommendation, ah Alan, the days of gardening before UA-cam and he was my only go too. I really like him. There are so many go too books. I am giving one set of books to my greatest friend, she really started growing last year, and caught the bug of gardening and wants to know more. I have got so many books, that I put a ban on any for Xmas this year. Hope you enjoy the lead up to Christmas Niall. Have both a peaceful and wonderful time, thank you for all the great videos.
Glade to see your pushing books, the internet is very helpful but not the same as a cold day with a good gardening book and a hot cup of tea. Although content is very important, I will say I do gravitate towards gardening books with lots of pictures. I find there are words in the pictures that can't be written,
Absolutely! I completely agree - sometimes online just doesn't cut it, and what's needed is a great book. They also carry a sentimental attachment that's important to me. There's also the work, time, effort, love, that goes into writing and creating a book.
Nice. My sister-in-law got me a blank journal that I have been using as a gardening journal. I'd like more gardening books. My mom got me my first gardening books for Christmas.
Gosh, that gardening diary looks perfect. Keeping good records is so vital, and it feels right to keep that information in a bound book--gardening is that important. 💕
Thank you, Niall. Cannot have too many books, or gardening books. Most of mine are more science-focused so I am tempted to expand my collection ! I have already ordered Colour and have Piet and Liz on my Christmas / birthday wish list. I did not think I liked garden design until I saw Piet’s work (esp in person); we watched a film about him and his style just ticks all the boxes for me. Thank you!
Don't forget you can get most of these at your local library. I have been checking out books at the library and making a list of ones I'd like to own. 💗
Dear Niall, I've been watching your channel for some time now and really liked this episode. I have a very special book "Monet's Garden: Through the Seasons at Giverny". There is a lovely story behind it. My dear ex-husband and now deceased Johnny ( a cray fisherman) gave me a copy of it, and then I lent it to a colleague, whose house sadly burnt down. On our wedding day in 1998, he interrupted me at the reception, and I said "Not now, Johnny, I'm talking to someone" - and then he gave me another copy. I still love it, though he's been dead for nine years now. We were very good friends both before and after the marriage. Cheers from the Tasman Peninsula, Kerry.
Hi Kerry! That's such a lovely story, and fantastic that you were able to get another copy of the book. It's not one that I know, but will definitely check it out. Hopefully one day I'll get to visit Giverny and see it for myself!
@@niallgardens I'm so glad you liked the story. I've become addicted to UK allotment and gardening UA-cam channels. Thanks to you I now follow Eli and Kate as well. I'm so envious of you possibly going to Giverny. I went round Europe and the UK when I was 19 in 1979. Such an amazing experience for someone from Tasmania. Now I'm in my '60s I understand my parents' concern about a teenager traveling alone! Keep up the good work, my dear.
Just managed to get the Christopher Lloyd book second hand on Amazon for less that £10! Would love to see your house plants they look so healthy. Show us sometime please.
Brilliant! That's so good that you got hold of the book! Actually, until I show off my own houseplants in a video, you might enjoy this channel that I also present! ua-cam.com/users/Clayplants
🌧 I’m learning that as I like being outdoors in Summer and indoors during Winter, I’m less motivated towards the gardening jobs at the moment. But I adore books! So more 📚 episodes would be welcomed by this viewer. I have a copy of “Grounded” and an RHS book by Lucy Chamberlain much like your Titchmarsh book. One of my favourites is “How to Grow Winter Vegetables” by Charles Dowding as it lets me plan the slower growing stuff to make use of the ground through winter. What cookery books do you like? I cook from what’s growing in my garden - I made an amazing curry this weekend, using homegrown 🧅🧄🍆🫑🌶, so I can recommend Anna Jones and her latest “One Pot, Pan, Planet”.
I'm actually the same as yourself, I err toward being a fairweather gardener but I'm working at being more year-round. I like your suggestion of 'How to Grow Winter Vegetables' - I have it, and enjoy it very much. That's really cool about the curry-making. We're big fans of asian cuisine and cook that at least 3 times a week. Funny, we don't have many cookbooks even though I have tons of gardening books!!
Niall, I'm a new viewer to your channel. I do enjoy your presentations. FYI - I went to Amazon and typed in Colour for Adventurous Gardeners. Up popped a few listings for Llyod's book. Though it is used (previously owned), I look forward to receiving it in March. Cheers....
Niall, great video…. After watching I went to check my shelf - I actually have the Piet Oudolf book! I must go and take a closer look. I also tried the look ages ago on a long border 24 meters by 3 meters. Its always in flux, and made a lot of tweaks to it recently. I found both the Alan T book and last one, Adventurous Gardening… on EBay for under £4 each and I’m really looking forward to making a Veg plot this year . Thanks
After watching this vid I had a look on eBay...must have been my lucky day...Christopher Lloyd, Colour for Adventurous Gardeners....for less than a fiver....including postage....Merry Xmas to me....beautiful book, you were right!
Awesome choices!!! The only one i have out of storage at the moment is Liz's. One of my favourite books is by Bob Flowerdew - Grow Your Own, Eat Your Own I used to get it out of the library so often that I ended up getting my own copy lol. The Christopher Lloyd book looks incredible :D I have found a copy on Amazon but I think I will have to save my pennies cos I think Santa will choke on his coffee when he sees how much it is going for lol
Good call on the Bob Flowered book - he's so knowledgeable and everything he creates is superb! I saw the same book (and the insane price!) and that was one of the reasons I didn't link to it! 😂 Eeek!
Do buy Claus Dalby's gorgeous book 'Containers in the Garden''. (It's a good companion toan older book, Malcolm Hillier is 'Container Gardening through the Year, 1995.)
Great videos niall . Thanks for the tips..... but ....this was really just an excuse to show off your house plants , wasn't it ?....they look great. (Heard you on newstalk last week btw, well done.)
It's a Niwaki hori hori so you can either order direct from them, or I think they have a list of retailers so you could find someone local to you hopefully :)

Hope you like my book recommendations everyone. Let me know what you think! 💬
Loved loved it! Just purchased Color by Christopher Lloyd. I found it on Amazon and got the hardcover. Thanks again!

I completely agree - online is brilliant, but there's also something special about the tactile nature of a book. And the time taken in its creation.
Christopher Lloyd is one of my gardening heroes. His colour book is sublime!
I immediately purchased Christopher Lloyd's book after watching!
It's just stunning isn't it!
Ah super! You won't regret it!
Bought liz’s book and i loved it too great choice of suggestions for Christmas. Bought Alans book for me off ebay for a few pounds. Result.
Oh brill, that is a bargain! Great! Yeah I can't recommend Liz's book enough 😃
Thank you for the information on your book suggestion. I love your plants in the background.
You're welcome! Glad you liked my little makeshift studio!
Thats a great video there. Light & cheerful. 😀 I loved it & I also see that like myself, you literally have plants everywhere! Although that storm Barra made a fair mess outside, my indoor plants are all safe & sound! 😌
Hi Eilish! Yeah I'd say Barra did quite a bit of messing things around alright, it certainly did here!
Great recommendations, luckily found the last book Christopher Lloyd book on Amazon at a great price. I'm overhauling my borders this year so hoping it will help me with flower choices.
Wahey! That’s super that you found a copy - I really love the book

Btw, I find AbeBooks UK a very good online source of secondhand books, and th they even deliver to me here in Tasmania.
It's by Vivian Russell.

Glad you like them! Thanks so much!
My local library has two of the books he recommends! I'm going to be hiding some place quiet, looking at pictures of flowers.
Watching from a very wet and windy Donegal in May. ☺️
