Again one perfect performance with perfect harmony, and yet a song highlighting Judith beautiful voice and his nice deep voice. Nothing to say but absolute perfect.
Sadly I saw on Nina Samone's ver that alot of kids these days think the song is about turning away from god 🤦♂️I pray for them and I'm glad that I as a young guy understand this song and repent everytime I sin and pray so that I will be with the LORD one day
This is their one song I remember most from my childhood. I didn't realize how many of their other songs I knew untill much later. I would love to have seen the in concert

When I was a toddler (circa 1971), I my uncle handed down his old Dansette record player to me, along with a stack of 7" singles, mostly 60s pop - Beach Boys, Cliff Richard, The Seekers. This was amongst them and got plenty of play at all four speeds. (I would pretend 16 rpm playback was the sound of a giant. Fee Fie Fohhhhhh Sssssinnnnnnermmannnn etc.). Thus I learned to read from looking at record labels, since the song title printed on the label was repeated in most songs, and this is no exception. Also "Look and Read - Cloudburst" was on the telly at the time, which helped. I still love the 'mysterious' chromatic vocal during the fade out at the end of this track.
Thankyou so much for this beautiful recording. So wonderful and clear.Isn,t Judiths voice so beutiful. What a natural talent.Seems so effortless, just flows.Very entertaining and uplifting.Thankyou again.Cheers, John.
Bruce´s voice is at its best in this recording but Judith can make the black-white scene shine as only a true star can do. A woman that makes everything around shine with her presence on stage.
I always preferred Bruce Woodly as lead singer in The Seekers songs than Judith... ‘cause is a Folk group, I know they are also Pop, but they are a Folk-oriented group. For being Folk Music, for me he do it way better, Judith voice is more like Pop voice or other genres, but for what it is Folk genre, I don’t think her voice fits so well in these songs. Bruce captures the essence of Folk so great. Just see what he does in Red Rubber Ball, or I Wish You Could Be Here, or Rattler, and others, everything he do is so great, you feel the flows of Folk magic in those tracks. Judith also do it well but she don’t reach those great levels Bruce reaches, in terms of Folk magic. My thought.
wow... just great.... thank you so much for posting... never thot that I will see them singing this on video as I only got to hear the song when my brother brought their phonograph 30 odd years ago.
@@elliothansen7635 Your point is very interesting because foreigners like me usually think native-English speakers can understand all words other people say or sing in English!
Actually, although it's the version I like best, it's far from being the original. There are recordings dating back to the fifties, and the song is older than that.
Compared to Nina Simone's version of this song, this particular interpretation sounds sort of similar to "The Drunken Sailor", a traditional Irish song.
The melody comes from a much older Irish tune, 'Óró, sé do bheatha 'bhaile'. It's been borrowed for several other tunes, including the shanty you mention.
Funny that - when I was little I thought the lyrics were 'oats in a man, where you going to run to', so I guessed it was encouraging us to eat our porridge and get lots of energy to run about.
smsheil I thought that they were singing “Oh cinnamon, where you gonna run to?” I thought the devil was after the cinnamon, and it made no sense. Why would the devil pick on the cinnamon? Why not some a more suitable spice, like, say, Cayenne pepper?
When I was young I thought the lyrics were "Oh cinnamon, whey Yagonna rum two". I pictured a stick of said spice (with little legs) sitting on a bar stool, the barman offering him a double measure of some weird drink made of cheese and rum. My whole adult life until the age of 34 was based on this. Therefore when I finally understood "sinner man" I was devastated. Is there any therapy out there for this sort of post-delusional stress disorder?

I was confused by these lyrics for years right from when I was a child. I later found out that these spirituals are not what we white people thought they were. Slaves were usually prevented from talking to each other, and the songs were a coded way of communicating escape plans. When you find that out, the words make a lot more sense.
@@society86 Yes, recordings date back to the fifties, but the song goes back much further. It's worth remembering we will only have inherited a small part of the song. Also, the lyrics would have been fluid according to need. It is difficult to know exactly what the words would have originally meant as they are now out of context. 'Dig in the ground, the devil won't catch you' is quite likely to have been describing how to hide for example. The words 'Sinner Man' and 'Devil' were almost certainly code words for whoever the song was talking about, whilst making it sound innocent and religious.
Sort of creepy how cheerful they all are. Like they're all so sure they're free of sin and will happily look upon the subject of the song running on judgment day. If it's a character they're putting on for the song, it's very effective.
Why are so many religious songs so repetitive? This goes directly against the truth which is infinite and always changing, never static, never repetitive. Repetition is one of the thing that holds humans back from the truth.
Because a lot of gospel songs originated with the Black slave of the Caribbean & Southern USA... they couldn't read or write (music or prose) and so had to create something that was easy to pass around... The repetitive nature made it easy for one singer to lead the group, he (or she) would sing a line, those near would repeat it, & then those further away would also repeat it... and then the next line is introduced.
Well, quite apart from anything else, whatever there is to learn or contemplate, humans can only take a limited bit of information at any one time. Repetition is reinforcement of one aspect. In any case, most truths DON'T change. There may be circumstances where you have to be flexible with them, but the basics don't change. For the most part murder, telling lies, stealing and rape is wrong, that's a truth and they always will be wrong. Repetition is a basic human need, if you practise any skill, repetition is vital. As long as we do other things too, we should use it as an asset. By the way, Religious Studies was my degree so I do know something about this.
It doesn't mean what it sounds like for a start. It is not moralistic in any way, and as it was originally an African American spiritualist song, it can hardly be considered bigoted. These songs were originally sang to appear like the slaves were singing religious songs. However, they were actually a way of talking about the details of escaping, when it was forbidden to talk to each other.
Everything this fantastic group does is qualty , and this is no exception.

A staple in catholicschool also
One of the very few groups that sounded just as good live as on the studio recordings.

Before I knew about the seekers, I knew this song,
Georgie girl and I’ll never find another you. Without knowing who the seekers were.
Great song love the seekers judith is. Such a great women
You are about right on with the song title. None of us can claim more than that. BUT you MIGHT say:'Only a sinner SAVED BY GRACE.'
Wonderful version xxx
Love this song
OK, my brother gave me this 45 back in the day. I always sang along," Oats in a man . . ." Silly boy!🤣
Judith's voice just soars.
Happy Birthday to Bruce Woodley.
Yes! (When it is his birthday) 😄
I like the original but this and the one by the Spanish group are incredible.

I prefer how he sounds in "The Sad Cloud", "Rattler" and"The Water is Wide".

Perfect! As always

so different in kind to the Simone rendition, but also deep and holy

This song co-written by Cory Wells of Three Dog Night. His version also on youtube.
He might have updated it, but it was in existence long before he was.

Yes, the New Seekers were set up by Keith Potger, who was one of the original group.
