I just realized that goon was the guy holding the boom box in the museum scene earlier in the movie.
@@icecsm16 yeah lAwrence is in more than one scene
I really don't get the hate some people have for this scene. The reason why Batman gets beat up in this scene is because he's wounded and bleeding. He literally just survived the Batwing crashing and exploding with him inside it, and he just spent the past ten minutes or so climbing nearly an endless feet of stairs. There's a reason we see blood on his face and walking all slowly. He's not in the proper condition to fight. At the end of the day he's only human, he's not perfect. Earlier in the movie when he took on the Joker's gang in the alley he owned them like a badass.
@Luke Grace the other guy explained it perfectly. He just survived a plane crash and walked up a tall flight of stairs. He has blood on his face, so he isn't at 100% percent.
Fang Gangsta Coyote I personally love this sort of stuff, like when Spider-Man is battle worn and he’s almost killed by the Green Goblin at the end.
Luke Grace Whilst that is true, Burton etc had to incorporate a proper final fight/ showdown scene as it’s part of the structure of all films. And since Joker’s not really up to Batman’s level of strength etc it wouldn’t be much of a challenge to Batman in a fight so giving him a proper challenge w the henchman in the final fight for Batman to overcome makes more sense from the writers’ point of view.
@Luke Grace sure but it's also possible that some of his weapons could be damaged from the crash. Plus he didn't really have much time to react considering the bad guy took him by surprise and how close they are while fighting.

The moment Batman tells Joker his own line, Joker snaps out of his insanity for a moment and becomes Jack N. again
The bit in Vicki's flat where Joker says the dance with the devil line to Bruce he sounds like his serious old Jack Napier self for a few seconds.

I like how he tries to pass the double murder off as "Hey, I was a kid..."
It's Jack Nicholson being himself in this film like so many others before he did Batman.

Fun fact: The black strongman who beats up Batman in this scene is actually inspired by/based off the Joker thug who beats up Commissioner Gordon in Batman: The Killing Joke before Gordon was kidnapped. That was one of the inspirations Burton took from that novel and he tried to make a character/fight scene resembling him.
Because the killing joke is one of his favorites
I remember he was a boss in the Gotham Cathedral as well in the Batman game back in the day. I think most of the known goons were.
Okkkkk... that makes sense since i always felt weird that this random joker thug could just take on THE BATMAN so easy... i wish burton could hyped him up earlier in the movie... like have the joker say out loud that he needs some heavy duty hitters for this bat fella then have this black dude breaking brick with his bare hands or some shit to show how much of a bad muddafukka he is... What I love about Tim Burton and co's approach to this version of Batman is that the climax drags on a little longer with an additional action scene that takes an unconventional route of being both hard core and dark, and yet whimsical. The uniqueness and unconventionality of it all is all done to such an astounding effect. And that Danny Elfman tune is awesome!!!

I haven’t seen this film in a long time, and 1:22 threw me off. It’s so smooth and seamless, but I always assumed the batsuit is very restrictive and doesn’t allow for much agility, but seeing him duck and dodge 4 times in a row really wowed me more than it should.
How about the somersault later on?
were those punches hurting Batman? because Joker punched Batman's body armor and almost broke his hand. I always assumed Batman was wounded and exhausted and just let this guy exhaust himself and it would make it much easier to take him down.
Joker is not a physical threath at all in this movie. And he punched the batsuit where it's the strongest (bulletproof as you can see twice before).
The big black goon was not only a stronger boxer but also smart. He started hitting Batman in the abs, but then changed the punching to the cowl and below the belt. Batman is probably less protected there so he felt those for sure

"Did you ever dance with the devil in the pale moonlight" being one line that set up an interesting and well-done take on the batman narrative of his family's killer, the "reminder moment" and this scene with weakened batman after the crash taking some time to get to the joker whose dancing with girlfriend (total joker moment) was brilliant.
I know there's matches malone and whatever and in "Gotham" the tv show I liked that narrative a lot as well. However, the handling of it was actually pretty weak in Batman Begins, even if "accurate to the comics" way more to me (and batman begins is honestly my favorite nolan batman film, even if all heath ledger joker moments are my favorite scenes from that series).
0:18 I like the original version of that shot of Batman where it was just a black silhouette with only his eyes visible like in the comics. So creepy!
And epic at the same time
One thing I never understood about this scene was is the orchestra music we hear playing actually playing in the movies universe while Joker and Vicki Vale dance? And if so then where is the music even coming from?
No its not. Its like a soundtrack you know
The same boom box joker used to play prince music while trashing the art gallery
Then you realize when he shoots the girl, Prince's Dance With The Devil should've played instead.
I guess there is a henchman in charge of the music for every Joker´s crime.
I know this from one year ago but whatever thats not true because how can Batman here the music play when he defeat the acrobatic henchman with the knives on his feet
For years, I thought this music piece was borrowed from a classical waltz. I was college years old when I found out Elfman composed it himself....of course he got some more cool points for that
Is it just me but does Keaton's Batman never seems to feel pain? I mean we see him get shot, beaten and stabbed a few times in these movies, but he always brushes it off likes it's nothing and continues on. Here he's wearing the Batman suit, so you could say it's the armor that's protecting him. But I also recall that there's one scene in this film where he gets shot in the arm as Bruce Wayne without even wearing the batman suit, and yet he doesn't even react to it. And before this scene, we even saw him survive the Batwing crashing and exploding with him in it. And yet here he is still pressing on despite being hurt and fighting a guy twice his size and strength after climbing how many feet of stairs. In the sequel he even gets stabbed by Catwoman, and when asked by Alfred if he's in pain he goes ''No''. I guess this version of Batman must be really strong and mastered how to avoid the feeling of pain for his act of being a entity.
I think that this version of Batman is trying to portray himself as a non-human entity, therefore blocking out pain and showing very little to no signs of distress or exertion. It would make him appear unaffected in order for him to intimidate criminals such as the goon who make a considerable effort to eliminate the Batman.
For sure he feels pain. You can see it in his body language and face against the final brute in church
"It's as though we were made for each other. Beauty And The Beast! Course if anyone else calls you "Beast", I'll rip their lungs out."
I think the reason the last goon wasn't able to pull Batman's legs off his neck was because he hurt his hands too much punching that hard bulletproof armor. I imagine it was like punching solid steel. I don't know how he was able to withstand that. He kept beating Batman relentlessly into submission.
Some punches landed in the hardened part of body-armor, but the goon also fought dirty by punching the cowl and below the belt. He wanted a part of Batman's mask and the belt as a souvenir for disposing the Dark knight
