Standard Oil didn't seize the oil trade, it created it. It did not have a monopoly. It was not immune from competition. Only the government can create genuine monopolies through the use of special protections.
Standard Oil was found guilty in the Sherman Antitrust Act. Which prohibits 1) anticompetitive agreements and 2) unilateral conduct that monopolizes or attempts to monopolize the relevant market. Rockefeller would go to a region, sell oil for the fraction of the market price, outcompete and buy the competition, and close them afterwards. That's predatory pricing, and at least an attempt to create a monopoly. Also, saying that a monopoly is impossible without protections has no basis. If a company controls most of the industry, which Standard Oil had, it is by definition a monopoly.
Except when they had declining revenue. Exxon is about to be one of the most profitable companies in the world. Investment is down and they are established. They will run the assets till they are useless all while making massive profits. Natural gas is up 400 percent ytd. I have a client that made money in 2020, now prices are high and things are good.
I don’t understand the hate for oil companies. We are the ones who use the oil! It’s still a very important energy source and I think has a net positive impact on people’s lives
So true. And lets not forget the immense benefit oil has given all of us. These companies go to the ends of the world to find and deliver it and if they stopped tomorrow billions of people would die within months. We need cleaner energy but nothing is 100% clean. Even renewables involve enormous amounts of mining and chemicals for manufacture. Instead of hating the oil companies we should accept that they provide a very important service to society.
One-third of the CO2 in our atmosphere is due to human activity, meaning we've increased natural CO2 levels by 50%. Half of our emissions happened in just the past 3 decades. We’ve fundamentally changed the composition of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. There is no option other than stopping emissions, unless people just don’t care about the next generation at all. We are a lot better off shifting now than waiting. It’s far cheaper and less damaging to deal with it today.
Republicans have proven again and again that they would rather try and fix something later than to do it sooner. Even if it costs less, both financially and in human lives.
Great insight it’s definitely going to be a challenge as we are addicted to fossil fuels. We need legitimate replacement that can match demand while allowing room for growth.
What we should be doing is investing in Synthetic fuels, If done right and using renewable resources to create synthetic fuels will be clean. Getting rid of all the current ICE vehicles isn't the answer, think about how much resources it would take to rid of all these current vehicles on the road It's going to hurt the planet at the same time. Synthetic fuel is a clean option if done right.
We still use plastics. Farming and actual high torque / energy intensive machinery still use diesel (and EVs are unlikely to replace them). Gas is an important source of electricity and heating. My money is on Exxon. I dont think oil and gas is going anywhere.
When their margins shrink most of the rats will jump ship. As a company it might survive, you'll be looking at GE in the 10s instead of the 70s as an example.
There's a vast difference between "still using" something, and the profitability of a company. 1. Plastics are a high margin, low volume business. They are not a key driver in the profitability of integrated oil and gas companies. 2. Farming vehicles constitute only a minority of vehicles. A collapse in gasoline demand will have a disastrous impact on oil margins, made worse by the fact that oil demand and supply is inherently inelastic. 3. Gas is a high volume, low margin business. Natural gas use for power generation is on the rise, but increasing electrification (even if powered by NG) is eroding the much more profitable petroleum business. Most of the big bucks aren't coming from the high volume, low margin developing countries. They come from selling gasoline in rich countries, which are now rapidly decarbonising. A $61 exxon stock may not go to zero, but I'd be pretty bummed if I was holding one and it dropped to $20.
I honestly think that these politicians and even the ones that i vote for are clueless on how to tackle fossil fuels. The solutions they come up with are either expensive or cause a lot more problems than its worth.
Oil companies should stop pretending to be green and embrace their role as needed companies that provide products that improve our lives. Producing affordable energy that keeps us comfortable, mobile, and keeps businesses running and their products moving is a good thing.
Why not talk about how China produces more CO2 emissions than the top four countries in the world combined? Then correlate that to Americans consumption of Chinese made goods?
Now now, is CO2 emission in China from manufacturing a certain product higher than emission from manufacturing it elsewhere? If the answer is no then it’s not China’s fault, people need to reduce their consumptions regardless of who makes the product
Any 'carbon tax' will need to be properly calculated & appropriated. Otherwise, most companies simply PAID THE FINES for illegal dumping, environmental penalties, spills, lawsuits, etc. Why? Because: if it costs $1,000,000 to actually FIX an issue, but the fines are $100k... it's an obvious no-brainer to just call it 'business as usual', and ignore the real problem! lol 🤣😂🤣 This isn't about the Earth. NO ONE CARES. It's about money. That's all that matters to businesses: money. 😎
That doesn’t fix anything except making people poorer. If you increase the cost of doing business, you increase the cost of the product. And since almost all companies charge a margin increase; more expensive commodities means more profit for the same amount of volume. If you want to fix something you have to create a more economical option. Otherwise you’re just playing into the game and hurting the people who you’re claiming to advocate for.
It's not clear oil will continue to be the cheaper alternative as renewables gain traction and become dominant. It costs a lot of money developing oil reserves and maintaining the infrastructure.
Oil companies aren’t the ones driving the vehicles that create these emissions. Simply part of where we are in technology. We don’t have better options at the moment. And shouldn’t make gas more expensive to virtue signal. Innovation is key.
The majority of the lifetime emmisions from a car will come from gasoline, there is already alternatives, battery cars have seriously started to improve every year and soon gas will lose the range advantage.
There is a cost to everything. One doesn't consider the carbon foot print to build a tesla car, to cut down forests to clear them for solar panels, the carbon footprint to produce the solar panels, and the carbon footprint to power these EVs, and the carbon footprint to dig up the lithium required to produce the batteries.
Have you factored in the carbon footprint to build an ice car? Thought not Have you factored in lithium recycling? Thought not Have you factored in the cost of green electric being half the cost of fossil without the waste? Thought not Or the fact that an electric car will do 400k miles without needing a whole array of new parts from exhausts to engines the comparisons are mind numbingly junk don't you feel embarrassed at spewing fossil propaganda?

To help reduce cost for impacted company vs other unregulated competition selling cheap product in rest of the world without any backlash... so competitiveness in US doesn't reduce... if only we can make entire world follow same strict environmental laws.. but doing that now, we will strifle growth of other developing countries.. end of the day its all about general population paying more price for the same product vs developing/under developed countries while making ourselves less competitive globally which can in future be detrimental to us.. so all these initiatives are just band aids.. we cannot truly improve the environment unless we unite the world to ONE currency, ONE law, ONE world like in sci fi movies/shows

This carbon emission stuff really penalize companies which produce carbon related products, to an extent that they are not willing to invest in new capital of extracting more oil from oil field. Now as the gas price goes higher, then people starts to complain about it, and President Biden urged OPEC+ to pump more oil in order to reduce the price of gasoline....You see the problem here? Why people complain about the price of gas, if they want green energy? Why government penalizes oil producers and also asks them to produce more oil ? Oxymoron behavior? you bet. Let's face it, we can not live without carbon resources. How about solar, battery, or wind energy? Nope, they are indirectly carbon based as well. Only after one realize this, can one start to act sensibly and rationally. In Australia, coal is one of the major export goods and profit generator. But it appears that coal is not counted as carbon emission in Australia because they do not use it. Go figure. Unless we are willing to reduce our own carbon footprint, and pay for the higher user fees, it will be hard to achieve the green house effect goal by 2050. Pointing fingers to others will not work.
No they can't because they don't contribute enough of the problem. 95% of our co2 comes from natural factors such as volcanic activity. ExxonMobil is a small percentage of the remaining 5%. The ocean and forest balance that natural problem. From the time civilization began, particularly since the industrial revolution, we've removed 50% of the planets forest. Even if all the oil companies disappeared permanently our problem will still continue growing at an alarming rate because they're just a small part of a natural occurrence with natural solutions being removed yearly.

Standard Oil didn't seize the oil trade, it created it. It did not have a monopoly. It was not immune from competition. Only the government can create genuine monopolies through the use of special protections.
Standard Oil was found guilty in the Sherman Antitrust Act.
Which prohibits
1) anticompetitive agreements and
2) unilateral conduct that monopolizes or attempts to monopolize the relevant market.
Exxon is headed the same way as Sears and Roebuck.
Except when they had declining revenue. Exxon is about to be one of the most profitable companies in the world. Investment is down and they are established.

Why restate the obvious? Everyone knows

Solution: Exxon is welcome to buy Petroteq with a unique oil sands production. By the way, Dr. Bailey (CEO Petroteq) is a former Exxon manager😉.

Why not talk about how China produces more CO2 emissions than the top four countries in the world combined? Then correlate that to Americans consumption of Chinese made goods?
If it says made in China I don’t buy it unless I absolutely need it
Now now, is CO2 emission in China from manufacturing a certain product higher than emission from manufacturing it elsewhere? If the answer is no then it’s not China’s fault, people need to reduce their consumptions regardless of who makes the product

Any 'carbon tax' will need to be properly calculated & appropriated. Otherwise, most companies simply PAID THE FINES for illegal dumping, environmental penalties, spills, lawsuits, etc.
Why? Because: if it costs $1,000,000 to actually FIX an issue, but the fines are $100k... it's an obvious no-brainer to just call it 'business as usual', and ignore the real problem! lol 🤣😂🤣
This isn't about the Earth.
Otherwise you’re just playing into the game and hurting the people who you’re claiming to advocate for.
the carbon tax is being chanpioned by exxon cause they know its just a talking point that wont be enacted in America
The world continues to use more oil. The reason why is China, India and many others elsewhere are developing.
It's not clear oil will continue to be the cheaper alternative as renewables gain traction and become dominant. It costs a lot of money developing oil reserves and maintaining the infrastructure.
Good joke.
China and India both are still pushing heavily on coal while cancelling solar projects to get even cheaper rates in next tender round.
Let's not forget that china is the industry of the world and they actually needs way more energy.
Thought not
Have you factored in lithium recycling? Thought not
Have you factored in the cost of green electric being half the cost of fossil without the waste? Thought not
Or the fact that an electric car will do 400k miles without needing a whole array of new parts from exhausts to engines the comparisons are mind numbingly junk don't you feel embarrassed at spewing fossil propaganda?

Off the subject, but not off the subject, shortly after a three year pandemic, the above statement was encouraged except for e- bike, but used a racing bike or your standard one- two speed bicycle for transportation.
The 55 speed on the interstate high way (yes, some state in sections it's still have that speed limited, they actually found the car accident rate went down in that section) was put in place along with turn right on red unless posted, with no one coming, along limited your car warming up time was put in place during the 70s due to the gas shortage. And yes the price of fuel went up, the cost food double, food and house hold supplies shortage, lay offs, cut work hrs, business closed. The difference today is, people wages were far less, depending on the state/ job or company you worked for, one state minimum wage 1. 40 - 1.80 an hour went up to 2.40 dollars an hour. Depending on your company/ your work, some based on union or who still had a union. Benifits or no to little Benifit. Their cuts did not Benifit the citizens. If anything it more if a hard ship on them.
